SmardDock is unique now!!! - Sony Xperia S, Acro S, Ion

as other mobiles are getting docks as well, i wonder why the ion dock is the only one with usb ports (excluding livedock), others have normal hdmi port and charger only, even xperia p smart dock became without the usb ports, weird??!

IMO it's just a gimmick. It's a way for them to justify it selling for $70. Sure, it would be kinda cool to hook up a keyboard and mouse and control it that way on my big screen, but that's why I have a laptop. It is unique, though, and I like the possibilities if the firmware can be hacked for the dock to be able to do other things. With that said, I would still like to get one

other things like what? it has the full capabilities of usb on the go, so i can attach it to externaly powered HDD for example, i guess they removed the usb ports fearing that users may connect high power demanding devices, i even wanna try charging another phone through it

You can game on it, for example. But Sony screwed it up by making it pricey. Including dual usb ports shouldn't make the dock cost more. It's not like usb 2.0 is new, had it been usb 3.0 then maybe the price would have seemed right.

to OP this is nice finding. MobileCity in NYC has had one with same title for along time but no picture, at least now I know this is not for me.
I wish the would design something that you could attach to your phone and use as night stand. something like the one they did to Xperia play stand.
Weak sauce, they could at least release something with a micro USB plug. It's their flagship phone, they should show some love.
Well, there is some hope:

My answer is simple... no!
It "must" be "iphone simple". Just plug it in, not connect this usb first and then this earplug and hey, dont forget the HDMI and so on.
Just a simple cradle to dock and "all is connected".

Unfortunately these little companies producing these product are no professional designer and mostly do some copycat.
You best bet is to wait for SE release of a better product and I am yet to see any good third party company with decent quality/design product for SE stuff.

Lapdock for other phones

I was just reading about the droid bionic and kinda pondered if it will get a lapdock as well n turns out it will. I then looked at my laptop dock and I examined the phone dock area and I realized u can just change the face cover to fit any other phone moto plans. Pulls right off. Just thought id share it.
Sent from my MB860 using XDA Premium App
The atrix and bionic may be able to swap the same lapdock - however, not ANY moto phone will have that capability... only those including the webtop app and have the ports in the right location... Just cuz you may be able to fit a 496 big block in a civic, doesnt mean its gonna work - crude analogy, but the principle is what im getting at. Just cuz it fits, doesnt mean it will work.
Hmm yea that makes sense. I hope they do tho since I purchased it lol. Would love to get a newer model down the line n still keep my laptop dock.
Sent from my MB860 using XDA Premium App
Technicalle, that removable thingie is supposed to allow u to rit the atrix with a case, but I do supposed you may be able to fit other models. The photon may not be the case , since its LONGER, not THICKER... but well know when they get here.
I, for one , would like to see a better lapdock, with better viewing angles , multitouch trackpad , able to tilt the screen further back.
Sent from my MB860 using XDA Premium App
A friend of mine is thinking about the Photon and he seemed to think that it would be able to use the Atrix's lapdock.
Although the ports are in the wrong place so I don't see how that would work.

wont work, already been said by a preview of the phone. the ports are ontop of the phone instead of on bottom like ours. i would much rather have the photon though, even though its on CDMA which i will never been on anytime soon lol

There's no real reason an adapter set could not be made though. Micro USB and Micro HDMI extensions are all thats needed. Maybe not pretty, but should function.
Actually I am right. New pics of the bionic appeared and they look very similar to the atrix. The hdmi n micro port r in the same spot as the atrix not on top like some1 mentioned. Link

they were talking about the photon having ports on top, not the droid bionic.
EDIT: by the way, if you look at the pics in that link, the ports appear to be upside down compared to the atrix, meaning they will NOT fit even if it was the same distance apart.

[Q] Any new phone can become xperia play?

With new android 4.0 coming out next month, it has been mentioned that it will support usb gamepads just like honeycomb. I've seen people connect ps3, xbox360, or any pc usb gamepad to their xoom/transformer.
So does that mean anyone that buys an ice cream sandwich android phone in the future can use a usb gamepad to play all 150+ xperia play games?
This might also mean more gamepad compatible games are coming out in 2012+, although they might not call it xperia play optimized.
The only thing is that its 2011/2012. We have been with wireless controllers for like 5 years now. You would need a stand to make use of plugging in the controller and holding the controller with your phone on the ground or on a stand.
Its helpful but id rather use my play. So no not every phone with be like an xperia play...
Besides, the Play has the playstation controls embedded, which makes it a handheld console. Plugging in an USB controller and playing on a TV is a different thing altogether.
All well and good, but you're hardly going to carry a controller around with you, so you can play on the bus/on a train/in the toilet at work
The new ICS update is better suited to hooking you phone up to the tv via hdmi and playing games that way, Plugging a usb controller into your phone and trying to juggle both the controller and your phone would be pretty inconvenient.
Ice Cream Sandwich is screaming "plug me to an hdmi slot".
How will devices with no usb host use usb gamepads? They don't have the H/W.
Sent from my R800i using Tapatalk
All phones usually have a micro usb port for charging the phone. You can plug the gamepad into the micro usb port via an adapter.
Ice cream sandwich android os will make any phone become a usb host.

That's a better idea, but still even with BT it's not very portable SEXPLAY FTW
The reason I like having my Play is because it goes with me everywhere. Even something like a PSP or a DS are useless to me because I'm not about to carry them with me all the time. So having to bring a controller with me on top of my phone is beyond useless.
It would be nice if it encouraged more developers to add gamepad support though. I just can't see it being a huge encouragement.

Oh, you mean portable consoles... Then I guess it's touchscreen out embedded gamepad here. I don't see any other viable way... then again, I'm not a designer.
I have a wiimote I used to bluetooth to my old phone. Needless to say, it wasn't nearly as nice as having a built in controller as I rarely brought the thing with me.
What if instead of a separate controller, you just had a handheld controller / dock / attachment. It would just slide on the phone and into the usb port and bam..a slab phone becomes a play.

Sony Desk Dock for Ion

Anyone found this in stock anywhere? so far the only place i've seen it listed was ATT's website.. but of course... they are out of stock currently. i've seen plenty of ones for the Play listed on Ebay but i doubt they are compatible with the ION... but idk for sure... mayb Spectre you could check it out and see if the usb matches up enough .... would really like a dock in my life ha!

I am afraid this listing is not quite accurate. As far as I know DK20 is a smartdock for Xperia P which is way smaller than ION.
I just realized that the phone wont fit inside the dock if the phone has a case, of course tho you can remove the case but then it becomes an inconvenience
Docks just got in to the Sony store warehouse so they should be available from the website.

Yeah, I get what you're saying, but there are still ways to create a dock so that a case can still remain on the device (I think Spectre mentioned the Live Dock, which appears to work with a case). Anyhow, I just think that manufacturers should give this more consideration, as a lot of people put cases on their phones and would like to use docks without always having to remove the case every time they want to use the dock.

Yes, but to be compatible with all the different case designs and form factors would be impossible. Unless there was a standard case...which would likely meet no ones taste.

I agree. This 30 pin connector, proprietary charging, no HDMI, coupled with no JB 4.2 so no miracast, this is one disconnected, connected, wired and shackled but supposedly mobile device.

my playbook, and my note 2 use 2 amp chargers. I just lucked or on the 30 pin connector because I had a mini usb to 30 pin connector for my tab 2 7.0, and an extra cable.

I had no idea that this was happening.
It would be awesome if Samsung could come up with a transformer-esque type of keyboard/cover, or even a touch-cover like the Surface.
It makes the idea of a "Note netbook/laptop" a good one, but with two separated accessories i.e. stand + bluetooth keyboard, that idea is gone.
Shame :/
The tablet must be a tablet, not a computer if you want a computer buy it separately. A tablet is made for commands through touchscreen, if you want to have a tablet with dock keyboard buy a tablet-pc ( i own one..)

Eh? I can find the Samsung connector (which is actually a standard called "PDMI") just about anywhere (at least in the States), I've got more charger options now than i had with my Moto Xoom, especially if you buy one of these. HDMI and AllShare Cast work on my device, too.

This. I've been able to travel with only my tablet (on certain business trips even) and have most of what i'd needed to do be accessible that way.
I went to verizon yesterday & saw a Samsung branded Keyboard dock for the Tab10.1. I tried it with the display model Tab 2 10.1 & it fit. I thought that the Tab 210.1 & the Note 10.1 were the same size. I was gutted to find it was not. It works if you pull out the plastic guide/holder, but then it is kind of flimsy in there. Bummer.
Wasnt there a rumor somewhere that one of Samsungs next tablets was going to be transformer-esque? I could have sworn I read something a few months ago about it.

Well, with the GNote 10.1 LTE coming to VZ soon, I'd expect they'd be getting accessories there, too (and likely to be hugely overpriced), so I'd come back again a little while after the GNote's available in VZ stores.

That sounds sort of narrow-minded in my opinion. Why can't a tablet be both or why can't a computer be a tablet? For an artist like me, I would love the opportunity if tablets got powerful enough to rival their notebook counterparts and offered a desktop view as well as for easy access with a keyboard and trackpad.
With the move of ultrabooks , especially the Surface Pro, converging into tablet territory with full features, one must consider that to be a blessing than a curse. Think about it in this way: Would you carry a radio, cd player , portable DVD player with TV, game system and an ereader just to be able to use them, or would you opt for the simpler solution of an all in one deal? That is the number one reason why the iPod took off: portability. Not only can you get a radio, but a music player and now video, games and reading.
It gets roughly cumbersome to carry every single CD, DVD ,game cart/disc in addition to the hardware , let alone the books for brief reading in commutes in comparison to an all out deal.
For the average consumer and artist, such things are so hard to get that it is pushed towards the rich ,but now similar tech now exists that has the potential to allow for maximal power and capability and the ability to change form factors on the fly. Why should people have to be inconvenienced to buying several different products that can be brought under one device when it can be deducted into one singular product that is amazing and does it all , broadly speaking?
If we went by this flawed logic an mp3 player must play music only, but no radio , thus how would iPods and whatnot be popular if they didn't serve multiple functions simply?

What I was trying too say is everything is an add on so my kit ends up being as bulky as my ultrabook and far more prone to losing some piece that makes the whole thing work. my last tablet logged about 100k+/- frequent flyer miles. Using one power brick with one power end, one multi headed usb, one multi headed hdmi, one universal battery charger brick fit neatly in an airplane amenity bag, and served two cameras, one phone and a tablet. Needed no OTG cable to get the CF card reader seen by the tablet. Because I have a GNex, I already have a data/sync switch on my usb cable.
The cameras are the hardest and heaviest to carry.
So far, I've had to add another amenity kit to add the adapters for the Note. And I still don't have a way of using it to run a projector or tv. My phone ends up doing that.

Just bought one, stock is running out everywhere.
Time to think about soldering a split cable data/charging, and if that works hdmi.
Hope it's as nice as said, but returning is always an option in NL.:good:
