Micro HDMI + USB-OTG simultaneously? - Sony Xperia S, Acro S, Ion

I recently upgraded from an x10 to my shiny new ion and just ordered a micro hdmi cable to output pictures/video to my hdtv. I was wondering if it would be possible to also connect a USB OTG cable to the phone so that i could use a mouse or game controller through the USB port for playing games while outputting the video/audio to my hdtv?
Thanks,
Fantus

I would like to know this as well, and it would be nice to have some recommendations for apps that can run different usb devices.

This info is from here
http://www.xperiablog.net/2012/01/15/smartdock-for-xperia-ion-hdmi-multimedia-docking-station/
"The SmartDock is broadly similar to the LiveDock docking station, although it has one main difference – the inclusion of an HDMI port. This means that you can dock the Xperia ion into the SmartDock station, connect it via HDMI to your TV and look at photos, watch videos, listen to music or even connect a keyboard/mouse using the two onboard USB ports. It also, obviously, will charge your phone too."
If the dock can do it, should be good to go.

I got the DK20 dock for my ion. The only gripe I have is that it doesn't draw enough power from a PC's USB port to charge the phone. You need to use the plug that comes with the dock or the ion. (I use the ion's charger at work and the plug for my x10 at home.)
A neat upshot is that the USB ports on the back can also be used to charge other devices or host a Flash drive for more storage. ES File Explorer handled the additional storage flawlessly.
I haven't tried a controller by USB yet, but I got the Sixaxis app from the Android Market. Maybe this will make it easier to pair...

I tried it out yesterday.
It really works well. Was able to play "The World Of Goo", using the mouse and viewing it on my samsung 21" monitor which has an hdmi option.
The mouse works pretty well. If you have a usb hub you could even connect a usb keyboard, which works well too.

G - NEXUS Micro USB Y Cable - Exists??

Anyone know if a MICRO USB to FEMALE USB cables are available? I posted a link below of what Im talking about but it is a MINI USB to female (example)
I'm trying to hook up a keyboard and a mouse to my galaxy nexus so im looking for a splitter that has 2 FEMALE usb ends
http://www.staples.com/Staples-4-Po...:Cables_Hubs_Adapters_&_Switches:715440:36302
I was wondering the same thing. I was thinking of making my own dock and having this apart of it would be pretty sweet.
i know im trying to find something like that. I was able to use an OTG Host Cable and i plugged my logitech wireless transmitter to it for my mouse and it worked on my Nexus it was sweet so i started thinking what if I can find a cable with 2 female ends so I can hook up a transmitter for a keyboard and one for the mouse.
Very interesting!!!
Motorola makes a micro USB to female USB. They sell it as an accessory to the Zoom. Use that with a USB hub.

You can find micro usb to mini usb adapters on ebay. ($0.99)
They are mini usb (female) to micro usb (male).
Connect them to your mini usb cables/devices and make them

Look for OTG (on the go) cables, like these:

I am typing this on my Logitech DiNovo Edge keyboard. It is a bluetooth keyboard and trackpad. I use it for my theater PC/seedbox/home server.
I paired it to my GNex and everything works great, mouse and keyboard!
It is a little expensive, but no wires, and its a gorgeous piece of hardware.
http://mobile.logitech.com/keyboards/keyboard/devices/192
Also it will leave the port open on the phone, so you can connect to your
TV. Really looking forward to Ubuntu's news today!

Thanks for that it looks really good and you're right I would still have an open port so i'll probably use an MHL adaptor that can charge at the same time.

Thats looks good. now I just gotta find a mini usb to full usb in a Y cable with two full usb ends so I can hook up usb devices to it.
or a Y cable that has two mini usb female ends and the other one would be male mini usb
I'd second the USB hub idea. I've got a small 4-port hub with a memory card reader built in that I connect via an OTG cable. The side benefit is that it's a powered hub so I can connect an external battery or AC adapter to it so USB devices will pull power from it instead of the phone. It's really not much bulkier than some weird multi-headed cable solution and when I only need one device (which is most of the time) the compact OTG cable works fine.
FYI, I don't think you can split the USB to support HDMI on one side and USB on the other, to my knowledge the chip in the phone only supports one at a time. Once HDMI is enabled you need to look at Bluetooth devices.
yea makes sense for the hub. I was just trying to avoid using bluetooth because Im sure the HDMI would draw power to push to screen but then again it would be plugged into the side for AC. I think that bluetooth keyboard mentioned earlier sounds like a good idea. It's got a mouse pad and keyboard all in one.

It actually works really well. I highly recommend it.
Also like someone said I don't think it would be possible to push HD video a keyboard and a mouse all through a hub.

Has anyone attached two USB devices?

I want to attach two usb devices to my Note.
One will be the MHL adapter and one will be the 2.4ghz wireless unit for a keyboard like this http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/250996855143.
I need a Micro USB male to 1x Micro USB female and 1x USB female adapter.
These for some strange reason don't exist
I was just wondering if anyone has done anything similar.
I know I could get a Bluetooth keyboard, but I don't have one. I do however have the above keyboard
Oh wow! I'm interested into this keyboard! Does Lenovo Mini Wireless keyboard work perfectly with the Note? All buttons are recognized and trackball mouse is usable?
Its really good, i use it on my Note and my Libretto W100. The mouse and keyboard work perfectly.

You cannot attach 2 or more devices to the same usb port. You need an usb hub for that, but I don't know if the MHL would work with the hub. I will try later today to attach an usb hub and connect more devices, and will report my findings.

Edit:
--------------------------------------------
I have successfully connected a self powered usb hub to the galaxy Note, and connected 2 thumb drives, a combo card reader, and a mouse. The Note mounted both of my thumb drives, as /usbstorage/sda and /usbstorage/sdb respectively. Then I inserted a mikroSD card into the card reader and the phone mounted it as sdc. I then inserted an sony memory stick into the card reader and it was mounted as sdd. All mounts were usable, and I could watch movies from them, and watch pictures, copy files from one to the other, etc... But, when I connected the mouse to the usb hub it didn't recognize it. Whatever combination I tried the Note would not recognize my mouse, when plugged into the usb hub. When plugged directly to the OTG cable it works perfectly, but won't work when connected to the hub (maybe cables are to long).
Using rooted stock xxla6 firmware.
Edit2:
---------------------------------------
Just found out, that usb otg and mhl cannot work simultaneously. When the MHL cable is plugged in, the GNote's microusb port will become an MHL port, and from that point it will not act as an usb host or usb slave. :-(
It's too bad, 'cause I really wanted to connect it to my full hd monitor and use a mouse and keyboard, too.

How about bluetooth mouse+keyboard instead ? That would keep your USB port free for MHL

This is the setup I'm going to do also. But as with topic, it's also very tempting to have everything USB powered. Since it will decrease latency and maybe power consumption as well? (as opposed to bluetooth) Well, MHL to HDMI will still drain our battery even if we connect it to power source
You can also try NZtechfreak's workaround:

sixaxis controller pairing

do you reckon there is any conceivable way that you could pair your controller directly with your phone?
the app is great but if you want to use your controller for your phone and for ps3 it cant be a bit of a ball ache as when you plug it back into your ps3 it pairs back, and then if you wanna use it with your phone again you have to go back and pair it with the pc.
USB OTG host cable
Cool. Does this require any additional software or does it just pair automatically?
Do you think it would make any difference if I got a micro USB to female regular USB (as oppose to mini USB for the controller) as it would then be more versatile and could possibly use with other USB stuff? I could still plug the controller in through the ps3 USB charging cable?

In Sixaxis Controller all you need to do is press the Pair Controller button. If you don't have anything connected "No controller found - please connect it via USB cable" will display in the log.
This is the cable I got. I just plug in the controller to the USB-USB mini cable it came with to the host cable and the host cable to the phone.

Use GN2 as portable gaming system? (setup question)

Here is what I know:
I can use a Samsung USB-to-HDMI adapter to display the screen on a TV while charging the phone. You can hook up a PS3 controller to the GN2 with a USB-OTG cable. I also know that you can connect certain devices to the GN2 via USB-OTG cable and a USB hub to charge the GN2 while using the peripheral.
What I would like to do:
I would like to be able to run an emulated two-player game on my GN2 while displaying on an HDMI connected TV, and having two controllers work at the same time for simultaneous two player action (ex. Street Fighter 2 Turbo for SNES). I already have a couple PS3 controllers as well as two generic USB PC gaming controllers that I would like to use.
Basically, is the USB port on the GN2 capable of being used to simultaneously charge the phone, and run the HDMI adapter and two USB controllers? If not, what about just running the HDMI adapter and charging the phone, then run two controllers via Bluetooth? Also, I see there is a smart dock (EDD-S20JWE) that looks to have all of the functionality I'm interested in, can anyone confirm this?
Thanks all.
I have never thought of that! I am also interested though!

I actually just tried this very setup the other day: HDMI out + PS3 controller. In theory it should be awesome... But I found that the HDMI out is super laggy (both in terms of framerate, and a pretty significant delay between what shows on the phone screen vs. the TV screen). I tried it on both a TV, and a PC monitor, and it was the same. I posted about it here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2098948
It made every game I tried unplayable. I didn't even try a fighting game, but I'd imagine it would be even worse.
It makes the setup pretty unusable in my opinion, which has me pretty bummed out because I was really excited about it.
I'll just stick to GameKlip + PS3 controller for now.

Hdmi Dock

Is there a dock that charges and does hdmi out? Thinking this would be cool to play emulators or GTA on my big screen, paired with a wiimote or ps3 controller
To connect to the a TV you will need an MHL to HDMI adapter like this. I'm not sure if it charges at the same time, but it should, being that it connects via the USB port on the phone. If you search around the web, you'll definitely find much affordable deals. Cheers!

at least, if not charge, it maintains the charge level.
from your link:
The HDTV Smart Adapter supports HD signals up to 1080p. Connects directly to a standard HDMI cable for easy connectivity to home theater or monitor. Requires power from a wall charger. Can connect directly to your MHL-Enabled mobile phone to create an HDMI docking station. Requires wall charger (sold separately) to power the adapter while in use. (HDMI cable not included)”

You cannot connect more than one USB cable to your phone, so unfortunately that is not possible. Which controller exactly do you need to connect to your phone?
If by any chance you are planning to use a PS3 controller, pairing it with your phone through Bluetooth and using the Six Axis Controller app is the best way to go.
Edit: In that way, you will still be able to connect the phone to your TV via the MHL cable
if you hsve a frys electronics in your town, they have this item for $24. WORKS WELL.
