Gaming & $$$ - Samsung Galaxy Nexus

For as long as most android users, most have been with android since the beginning. We now have gaming, interactive apps and all sorts of cooky apps. Some to most of which are priced.
Here's an article I found trying to find Indie PC games for android "I failed".
http://www.webpronews.com/android-users-dont-want-to-pay-for-anything-2012-07 it talks about android users don't pay for apps, mostly because of root/no trial-free version.
This struck me as interesting because honestly I'd figure devs to be happy to share there work with the world for free. I honestly myself believe devs who charge just want money.
I do unfortunately buy some of these terrible products, but do give props and respect to those who do manage to make a fantastic app.
If its priced at least make it a good app, give a trial or free version.
This is where gaming comes in, obviously we know if not most games are marked with prices with no free trials and are half assed.
So I can see where piracy comes in, no one wants to pay 5.99$ for a half assed game. I've bought some games I regret and I proudly say if they release another I will pirate it. Sometimes its better to stay free, if its a great app or a dev who has done previous great work I would support them.
Yes I do pirate and I don't. Its where I stand with the devs and apps.
I'm shocked we don't pay for ROMs honestly.. these devs are fantastic at what they do and yes its for free, so props to them "unless it would be illegal which I don't believe it is" :sly:
Anyway.. I'm curious what you guys think?
Feel the same, do you support every dev in the play store?

This is not meant to be offensive, but I might rant a bit.
Devs sharing their work for free? Have you ever programmed, taken a programming course, or had to pay 80k for a bachelors in Computer Science? It is time consuming to think of a good idea, implement it well, and then squash bugs. It takes HOURS, days, if not months.
Yes, there are devs who charge for crappy apps and I agree, some devs are greedy. However, isn't paying for an app the same logic as paying for a pizza? Yes, you can make one yourself, but its not like you can make a quality pizza without spending a lot in ingredients or machines (ovens, etc)--you're paying for the convenience of it being done already for you.
This applies to apps as well. You may be able to program something similar given enough time, but you are paying for the convenience and their time for making the app for you to use. Just because it is digital and not tangible doesn't make it any less work.
Now I agree that there should be some sort of trial for an app to see whether or not its good or that you like it. Unfortunately, the world doesnt run on this type of honesty and nobody would pay if it were offered for free. Thats why devs have to charge and thats why some people pirate. However, if you do pirate, please throw the developer some money if you really enjoy their app or use it frequently, otherwise if they go broke, how will they keep developing your favorite app?
/rant

You are right.
No argument* I want it to be a clean talk amongst android users.

I don't see this thread going anywhere but down hill and fast
Sent from my Galaxy Nexus using Tapatalk 2

Same goes for PC games. PC gamers can't rent games so they pirate. If you buy a PC game , guess what, you're stuck with it.
But, as for android apps at least we can get a refund which eleviates the need for a trial in some circumstances
Sent from my Galaxy Nexus using xda app-developers app

Piracy is a huge issue on Android, but like any thing you just have to put a little effort into making it more difficult to crack. Although a lot of people say that leaving it free with ads actually makes them more money then charging for it.
http://techcrunch.com/2012/08/26/how-free-apps-can-make-more-money-than-paid-apps/
edit: if you like indie games you should check out the humble bundle

OP, your logic is horrible. I do applaud your honesty, no matter how awful I believe it to be. Devs create content have a free will choice to make, and those who charge are well within their rights to do so. NOBODY HAS THE RIGHT TO STEAL, EVER. Now, having said that, some devs create content as their job. How can they buy food and pay rent if people steal their stuff. This thread is a failure, other than highlighting the challenge Google has in locking down Android to prevent piracy but still allow side loading and customizing.

You're basically asking for a carpenter to build a house and give it away for free. Development costs time and money, and they have every right to ask back so that they can continue.

I think everyone likes free stuff, this is normal

When i was new to android, i swore i would never pay for an app or game, and was happy that way. Then i got titanium backup and loved it, but hated that i couldn't batch restore, so i broke down and bought premium. Then i started frequenting these forums, seeing how much effort some of these devs out into their apps, games, etc. Now i pay for them, gladly, an i look for paid apps by respected devs first. Mostly i do it for functionality, but also to support. Titanium Backup, Franco kernel, CWM touch recovery, root explorer and many more I've bought and will gladly continue to do so. I get better apps and i support further development. Win/win in my book.

Right, because 5.99 is such an exorbitant price... so many other things that I could do with that money that would have lasting value... wait. No, not really.
If you don't want to spend the money on the app then you don't really want it. Don't steal.

Because of this thinking and abuse Android is full of crap adware/push adware games, and you don't see most quality games released for Android. That is so sad.
I just have one question: do you work for free? Or do your poor employer have to shell out some bucks to have you working there? Yes, I wonder why those bastard devs charge for they hard work, or use those ad craps to try to get some money out of their hard work...
And also, you say, there is a lot of sh1tware, yes, there are, as there are a lot of sh1temployees.... You hire them, they do not do their work, they get fired... You buy sh1tware, you realize it is sh1t, then you won't ever buy anything from those bastards again... I really loved when you had an entire day to get a refund in Android Market, but them, a lot of smartass3s had to abuse it, and just use the game/app for the entire day and ask for a refund, doing that for several games/apps....
So, if Android market for games is like it is today, is just because most people think like you, either don't buy anything at all, they prefer to stick to a free ad game than paying 5-7-10 bucks for a quality game like Infinity Blade, or, worse, they just pirate it, and yes, installous and jailbreak exist for iOS, but this is not as easy as just ticking a box in settings menu and then downloading APK's from anywhere...
Don't get me wrong, I love the way Android is open, but, unfortunately, most people suck and doesn't know how to use freedom, instead, they abuse and try to get advantages out of it...

Unfortunately Google will probably end up walling their garden because of these issues, or at least surrounding it with thorn bushes

Yup. Jail broke my brother's iPhone and the first thing he ask is, "OK load it up with apps for free."
I stared at him and made him learn it himself. He did, but still, $1 doesnt kill.
I just bought COD: BOZ, a $7 app. The closest I am to pirating is "Game Sharing".
Me and my friends put each other's Gmail account(requires a lot of trust Cuz we can tamper with each other's mail & stuff) on each other's phone and share our purchased apps. Done.
I do admit I pirate once in a while(Nova 3 being one, so laggy that it wasn't worth the price.)
But there is one punishment I love about Jailbreakers, if you pirate your apps, u can't put em back in when you unjailbreak to upgrade to the next iOS.

If I have helped you.... hit that sexy thanks button. ^_^

Pretty much all the people I know who own an iPhone or iPod touch and have it jail broken mainly did it for installous...

i never thoght i would pay money for apps or anything. but later on as i used android, and looked at forums, i realized that devs really do alot of work. put urself in their shoes, and first thing i thought was "why the fk should i bother making this crap if all its gonna do is go to some ungrateful persons phone and im not even gonna get a thanks". so i regularly buy apps. not only does that make the android market that much closer to being as good and as diverse as the ios market, but u also get the LEGIT app without any risks of having some weird ass **** go wrong with ur phone in a very subtle way.....

[Q] Soooooo... what are the chances of wm7 coming to our android devices?

The final devices just got announced, devs will probably take a swing at it, AND ive seen some wm7 dumps going around the forum. sooooo... what do you all think? i'd love to have a play with this, just like every other ZOMG-NEW-UI-I-GOTS-TO-HAVE! guy here haha
is there already some work going on?
Zero chance, It would be illegal to do so as the license is sold with the device,

First of all, I believe the phone manufacturers still pay a fee to Google for the GApps.
Secondly, it's all about profit margins - Android is attractive to companies like HTC because they likely make more money per unit than they would if they use WP7.

Maybe they just remove the feature from the phones in stores. After you buy it, you'll get an OTA and everything's back to normal. ;-)

Never used that feature to be honest, so it's a price I'm personally willing to pay to prevent a ban. I'm sure some people use it frequently, but I'd think even they'd agree that it's better than getting the phone banned. Ensuring the continual growth of this phone's user base is only beneficial for current owners.
I hope it gets reversed. Universal search is something Android does so nicely. Being able to go in the settings and decide which apps can be included for example IMDB or foursquare so you can initiate search/check-in without first going into the app itself.
I really hope that pending patent for Google in regards to notification drawer eventually goes through. Before iOS implemented that feature I heard quite a fair share of complaints from friends with iphones primarily about how annoying a bunch of pop up notifications can be.

I personally use the search-all feature a lot, both for quick contact access (have a couple hundrets of people in my People app) as well as for quick app launch (well, being an app junkie, swiping through all the launcher pages eats hell lotta time) and for web search as well.
As far as I remember, search-all feature was available in old Symbian phones as well, and some implementations were also available in WinMo. How could this be patented by the fruit-company? Getting more and more tired of not-so-brilliant judges granting dumb bans. Judges should cancel dumb patents instead!
(like rectangular shape patent!! how come one can patent a RECTANGULAR SHAPE?! Slide to unlock - ok, nice feature, but how come anyone could grant as generic patent as "unlocking by dragging one object along path to a specific position"?!)
I can't wait for the day Apple looses its cool with the worlds sheep population. And I hope some big company sues the absolute **** out of apple.

Yeah, honestly, I've never used search to find local content on my phone. However, I did use individual applications own search (like contacts perhaps?). I don't think all of this suing Apple is doing is going to have much harm if any.

I totally agree. I'm not a patent lawyer and I don't know the history completely of mobile devices - but - it does seem that older devices had this search-all-content feature before Apple ever did. Remember, Apple implemented this feature back in the 3G days I beleive which was in 2008. Hell, I think the 8320 Blackberry had this feature if I'm not mistaken and was released in 2007 - I'll dig my old BB 8320 out and look for this.
Now, if Apple ultimately wins this case it WILL set a precedent for future cases and allow them to win more easily if they decide to pursue other handset makers. I personally think Google should just include the web-search only interface/widget and then offer up another Search-All widget in the market which would then overwrite the current one installed.
I wonder if this means that we will no longer be able to do things like initiate a text message or a call by voice. I sure hope not, because I use these features almost daily. It really is a shame that Apple has to have such ridiculous anticompetitive practices. Without competition, everyone will lose in the end.
Sent from my Galaxy Nexus using Tapatalk 2
I occasionally use search and see the results returned from all phone items. While handy and not directly used, I do like this.
My hope is that Samsung does nothing until the trial. If it works the way I have read, any logical design or function can be contested in patent disputes. (E.g. rectangular phone, search means search...not just web search).
This approach protects competitors who are in the same business and work toward logical design. Note that this is my interpretation of what I read and by no means fact.

Game reviews

Hey guys! Just wanted to let you know, I'm going to be starting to make reviews for Android games using my new Nexus 7 soon, most of them are going to be free games of course since I'm not rich, but I will make sure they are some of the semi-popular ones, popular enough that people know of them, but not so popular that everyone knows everything they'd ever need to know about them!
Pretty much what the videos will be is about 5-10 minutes of showing off the start of the game and showing off what's special about it and why you would want it over others, kind of what makes it fun and what makes it unique!
I will be taking requests (starting now) for any games that you may want to see in particular, paid ones would have to be requested A LOT or be one I was already highly considering, but most free ones that are suggested more than a few times I will try to get out! I hope to do about 1-3 videos a week.
If this seems interesting to any of you, let me know! Like I said you can start making requests, and I should start uploading videos next week (Starting with Minecraft, Great little war game, and Defender II) and I'll post the link to the YouTube channel here if people seem interested!
Thanks for your time,

Samsung and the cry baby

Hey guys I want to know your opinion. I'm due for an upgrade on my line. I already have a galaxy S3 and love it. I was holding out for whatever Samsung puts out next like the note. With the piss ants win this could possibly lead to there phones being banned in the U. S. Watching the news they were saying the judge in around 3 weeks from now can possibly stop all sales on galaxy devices in the U.S. Should I run out and use my upgrade or is this highly unlikely and the cry baby's won't get there way again. Maybe I'm being paranoid but the way they made it sound on the news made it seem like it's possible. It's a shame apple wins and we all loose, however this is just going to make them out innovate apple that much faster. As they said on XDA TV they may have awaken the sleeping giant. Long live Google and Samsung. I'm such a fan boy lol.. But at least I'm not a I phone user who lies to themselves. Take care community
How old are you?

Look man I'm a bitter android enthusiasts who sick of seeing apple trying to sue Samsung in every country for the past couple years. This screws the U.S consumer. Appeals are in the works and they are planning for multiple scenarios. This won't go down easy. There was an article somewhere saying that this was the best exposure for Samsung in terms of advertising because people are able to see that if the Samsung and iPhone products are the same and they can get the Samsung for cheaper, they will opt for cheaper.

What I don't understand is how the Jury was so proud that they did not read the instructions from the judge and went ahead to fill out 700 questions is less than 2.5 days,
I thought the entire point of a jury was to deliberate and come to a conclusion based on the evidence presented. The jury also stated they wanted to set a precedent and make an example of out Samsung, I wonder ho many of the use Ipads and Iphones...a Jury's job isn't to make an example but be fair and unbiased.
Sounds like the jury was pretty damn biased to me, there are a lot of legal experts saying that this will be overturned maybe even in this trial based on the jury's behavior. If not this trial, then most definitely the appeals court should overturn their verdict.
Essentially everything Lucky Koh does, the appeals court overturns.
I think Samsung should sue the US Patent Office, clearly they didn't check anything before granting useless patent after patent.
Probably some idiot working there who just check to see if all the boxes were checked and the paperwork was their, then they granted based on that.
How else can anyone say a rectangle with curved corners is patent-able
Alright enough with the rant.
Long Live Samsung and Android.
I love android and all products associated but I hate to say it, it's pretty obvious Samsung used many elements from ios to skin android with touchwiz. If you can't see the obvious you're delusional at best.
I wish Samsung the best but they made their bed, now they need to sleep in it.

Shut up.. we all know Sammy copied apple first for being the only Android maker to have a physical home button in the same spot as the iPhone & the colorful launcher of the s1 & s2.. they are iPhone replicas.. point blank. I have a galaxy tab 10.1 & people swear it is an iPad when they first see it.

Playing devil's advocate for a moment:
One could argue that the way Apple made their iPhone is really the best way a phone could be made. Therefore, Samsung had no choice but to make it look and sound the best, it just happened to come out looking like the iPhone... but with a totally different operating system, and much more improved IMHO.

Tell that to an iOS user that any Android device is better... after using a iPhone for two days im Impressed with the build quality.. which is one thing Samsung lacks. They even used a fake metal look alike material & plastic... where paying $650 for that build, really?

What does apple need to do beat Andriod?

Before anyone jumps the gun and calls me a fan boy of apple im not! I love my Galaxy.
I Was sitting at work bored and i started thinking about how IPhone is just so hated on as is IOS. So my question to you guys.
What do you think apple needs to do to capture more of the Smartphone Market. In my honest opinion I think iphone is fine hardware wise but i strongly belive that Apples needs to Rebuid IOS from the ground up instead of adding to it every year.

Make themselves open source and being less anal about certain phone features.. and possibly lowering their retarded prices.
My 2 cents..

they can't. They lost to Microsoft. They'll lose again

There's a lot apple would have to do to beat out android. Being open source and price yes just as the two above me have posted. They also need to get adobe flash player added to their devices. This is one of their largest set backs. But the main thing they need to do is stop thinking they are better than android as of now. Just because you own certain patents does not give the right to sue your screen manufacturer. Apple suing Samsung was a huge problem for me and made me sell my iPad and iPod because their using their name as leverage. Just a few opinions that I have and not in any way garbage talking about anyone or thing.

obviously the iPhone is not hated ok because millions of people bought it in the US. they are getting more hate though ever since the lawsuits. wish they didn't start that so there would be good competition and innovation. maybe we'd be further along with tech by now.

They Cant
They cant beat Android because they are left with nowhere to go as far as innovating/adding features to IOS. Android builds and builds on top of what they have often while apple just pushes out the same crap os.
Seriously put the first IOS release next to the newest and the only difference will be folders. LOL. Oh and wallpapers. Other than that they are identical. Android on the other hand is night and day from what it was to what it is now. The features are hundreds of times better and more plentiful. You couldnt pay me to go back to ios (yeah I use to be an iphone user up until the 3gs, but after seeing the 3gs I realized that they were just money gouging and not adding any damn thing) because of their lazy os.
I also love that they are stealing features from Android now and not even trying to cover it up. The iphone 5 dimentions look stupid as hell. I cant wait to see the flop that is the iphone 5 tomorrow. So damn terrible. Android FTW!

I work in graphic art and prepress systems since 1990 and all my life in work we used mainly apple computers and my conclusion is that they cannot do nothing in their attitude. This is their attitude and they think they are better than the others. Many times they was innovative but always this was their dumb because they was always kept the doors closed to others and the free spirit of a user. All their OS systems they was like that was made for stupid users, all the system things was closed and you always if you was using any apple device you needed to accept how the things are supposed to work without giving you the freedom of touching nothing. Isn't obvious that 85% of PC are with windows a big growing percent with linux and 5 or less percent with apple.
For me their last chance was the 1st iphone a phone that was pretty good in that time with fancy loocking etc but after 1 month went to girlfriend simply because again to have what I need I had to hack it or to pay a fortune for apps that a simple symbian or WM was doing out of the box.
As for the main question in this thread well I don't think they can do anything about it, this company has DNA problem and honestly I don't care now. Iphone 5 or iphone11 will be again the same plate in the same table with the same food on it, fancy announcement that will catch the chicks and some guys and that's it(and most of the Americans something that I don't understand honestly). In the era we live we must be happy that exist companies like samsung were they do the great hardware that they do and we have an almost open source software like android.
My 2 cents

And adding a 4" screen& moving a few things around, selling it for hundreds of dollars and saying its a new design. Apple is far behind

My two favourite brands are Samsung and HTC. Thats not to say I wouldn't change to another Android maker. But iOS you've only one maker Apple and, no choice apart from 16GB or 32GB. That would be like only having carrier !
I like choice and Android gives me that.

Exactly. The sad thing is so many of their sheeple will just buy it and act like its something new. Same stupid ass IOS in a slightly bigger case. So damn lame. I hate apple.
They need to give more freedom to the developers to do what they want with their app. Apple is lucky that there are so many developers making jailbreak tweaks to make their iPhone a lot better to use. Without jailbreak, iPhone is complete useless on some of the basic functions. The only advantage that iPhone has is the amount of apps they have in their appstore. Without the amount of apps they have in their appstore, I would not even consider getting an iPhone. Not that I would consider it now because S3 is such a great device.
In my opinion, they're already winning this war. It's us who need to catch up to them. I live in Orlando and the amount of iphone is staggering compared to galaxy s. A lot of people I know are anticipating tomorrow.... As long as this world exists, there will be something for the mainstream
for apple to win, they must copy Android's abilities for customization such as widgets and different keyboards. also, believe it or not, bigger screens. i remember back in the day Apple used to crap on Android saying 4"screen is way too big... oh what fools they look like now..

Apple will never catch up to Android. Ever. The reason being is exactly the reason Taysider mentioned. iOS is designed, maintained, and serviced by one company and one company alone, Apple. It is closed source and offers zero customization options. Apple imposes very strict rules on development and doesn't encourage innovation from outside it's company even if it was developed solely for their device.
Android offers a multitude of different devices to fit the needs of any user, from the beginner smartphone user to the life long developer. Android is open source and Google encourages development of customization and drives innovation actively from it's end users. Android is constantly evolving to better meet the needs and wants of it's users and Google actually listens to it's users rather than dictating what the user will want/need.
Apple will never let go of it's precious iOS. IFand that's a big if, they would let iOS go open source and allow other manufactures to use it while also allowing open development of custom ROMS and MODS they MAY gain some market share back. As it stands, you will see a small increase in market share after the release of a new generation iPhone, but it will decline again shortly after.
Just my opinion.
Android is a disease! it spreads out! and there is no cure!!!
Apple needs to bring back Steve Jobs.
It's a disease alright but a good one.
Noticed eBay and other sites that sell used mobile devices lately?
See the amount of iPhone's being dumped at these sites.
You will get the picture where 'apple is heading.

Apple has been around for a long time it's always been very simple to use, super easy interfaces and they just have a cult following do to those reasons.

Also I've noticed especially here in Las Vegas Apple is huge with the older crowd. Take my mother for example she has an 8gig iPhone 3Gs. AT&T offered her any phone in the store for free even the Galaxy S3. She was trying to get an iPhone 4 not even a 4s for free but they wouldn't do an iPhone for free she refused she turned it down and decided to stick with your old iPhone even though the battery holds only a 2 hlur charge now.
