Weirdness when using wifi hotspot tethering - Xperia Play Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi all I'm hoping you can help me.
I have the R800a model of the Xperia Play, running 2.3.4, stock standard and not rooted.
I'm experiencing some very strange behaviour when I turn on wifi hotspot tethering on my phone. When I do, it seems some 3G functionality in the phone is lost. I can still browse the web in Dolphin Browser, but TuneIn radio stops working completely, saying there is no connection. As soon as I turn wifi hotspot off, it picks up the connection again, but if I turn it back on...bang, drops out.
For the record, devices connected to the hotspot, such as my Nexus 7, can access all online functions, including TuneIn radio. It's only the phone itself that seems to lose this functionality.
It seems unlikely there is a bug in TuneIn radio, because I've had a friend verify that it works on his HTC phone when wifi hotspot is on. I haven't verified if it's happening within any other apps but it does look like the inbuilt wifi hotspot functions in this phone are blocking some 3G connectivity while active.
This one is stumping me. It's quite annoying me because I enjoy listening to the radio on the train, but I can't do it on my phone if I'm browsing the web on my Nexus 7.
Does anyone have any clue about what's going on here?

So I've found it's not just wifi hospot tethering, but tethering in general, as USB tethering does the same thing.

So I've gotten around this by setting up Bluetooth tethering instead, which took a bit of fiddling but seems to work much better.
I have a feeling Telstra's software was probably blocking some functionality while tethering via USB or WiFi.

Sprint Wifi Hotspot Not working :(

I went through this process last night Rooting part 1 2 the whole jazz:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=7078116&postcount=145
Everything appeared to go well. I installed Fresh rom. However now when I setup my Phone for Sprint wifi hotspot everything is perfect, until I actually connect to the wireless connection. I am able to connect, but it keeps trying to identify, seems like it never receives an IP address and as a result although I am connected to Sprint Wifi Hotspot (confirmed on the device) the computer is never able to connect to the internet.
Strangely, the Wireless Tether app (free tethering) works fine. I would use this but it seems like it lag spikes more often than the Sprint app.
Appreciate any advice you might have!!! Really miss my internet! haha

[Q] Odd tether problem

Hi,
Since i've had the One X i've had nothing but problems with tethering. I've tried wifi, bluetooth and USB. All seem to suffer from the same problem.
The problem being that the phone will have a working mobile internet connection (I can use the phone to talk to the internet without problem) but my netbook cannot talk to the internet. The problem is definitely not with my netbook or the connectivity between the phone and the netbook as I can ping the phones IP address just fine.
It's almost like when tether is enabled some sort of forwarding or bridging between wifi/bluetooth/usb and mobile internet should be enabled but isn't being.
Then, totally randomly, it will just start working fine.
Sometimes disconnecting mobile internet and reconnecting fixes it. Sometimes enabling airplane mode and then disabling it fixes it. But most of the time I literally have to just wait until the phone decides to start forwarding my packcets to the internet.
I travel by train to/from work and used to tether my HTC Desire using wifi or usb. It would generally be useable for the whole journey except when I lost signal entirely or when the phone switched between Orange and T-Mobile whilst I was in the middle of something.
I guess my main questions are:
Is anyone else having this problem?
Can anyone think of a way I can try to debug what's happening?
Does anyone have a possible solution?
Thanks

Try resetting your APN setting back to default. This should fix the issue. You may have to do this everytime at OTA update is applied.

Problems with wifi tethering

For some reason I am having problems with the wifi Internet supply, if I use the built in hot spot, it cuts in and out, I can actually see the 3G icon disappear and reappear on my phones task bar.
Wifi tether, stops requesting info and does noting.
I tried barnacle and it seems to be working the best.
Has Verizon figured out I when I am tethering.
I'm tethering to my iPad and have had the same issue when my wife connects her iPod, the device fails to load 90% of the time, if I'm listening to music it's like listening at 1X if it plays at all.
I have the same problem. I started having it after I updated the firmware to ICS. Wired tether works great, but hotspot, 3G kicks in and out.
XDA App, DInc II PoWeR!

Barnacle is working for me, the only one that works.
i use barnacle too, aside from it randomly restarting it self it works perfectly.
I liked wifi tether, hopefully the developer comes up with a fix, whoever he is.
I did notice that barnacle running my battery seemed to last longer, this is not fact, I could be wrong.

[Q] Bluetooth Tethering

My SGS3 doesn't have the option "Bluetooth Tethering" under Settings/More/Tethering and portable hotspot. I've seen numerous posts/videos saying to simply check that box to get bluetooth tethering working. I want to tether my Note8 via bluetooth to my SGS3 i747m.
Is this option disabled by my carrier (Bell)? If so, with a rooted phone, is there an easy way, on the stock rom, to re-enable it?
Tethering is allowed on my plan, Wifi tethering works fine, but I want bluetooth for the power savings and ability to leave it on all the time with minimal hit to my battery life.
I tried FoxFi, and got bluetooth tethering working that way. However, I found that many apps check for wifi/cellular connectivity, and when there is none (since I'm on bluetooth), they complain about having no Internet access and refuse to work, while other apps that don't check work fine. Is this the case with the built-in bluetooth too, or a side-effect of the FoxFi/PDANet Tablet apps doing dirty tricks to make things work?

[Q] WiFi tethering works, Bluetooth tethering doesn't (with a Mac)

I had a Galaxy Note 2, and BT tethering always worked fine on that, and it works fine with my old iPhone 4S, however I can't get it working on the Z1C.
In Settings, More, Tethering & portable hotspot, I have Bluetooth tethering ticked, and the Mac is paired with the phone. I can transfer files both ways so I know that's working. The Mac will connect to the phone using the "Connect to network" in the phone's bluetooth properties, and it looks like it's working, until I open any web page in any browser, then it says there's no connection available.
I know WiFi is faster, however the bottleneck doesn't really concern me, it's more for convenience that I can just click connect rather than enabling and disabling the hotspot on the phone.
Anyone have any ideas?
TIA
Still haven't managed to get this working on 2 different Macs, so seems to be something handset related.
Just bumping to see if anyone may be able to help this time around?
