what to do with phone now? - Sprint Samsung Galaxy S III

Hey guys I dropped my phone pretty hard yesterday, it doesnt appear that the outter glass cracked, but the screen stays completly black now, but if you look at it right you can see cracks that appear to be under the outter glass. I have seen the digitizer kits to fix lcd screens for about $150 so if i bought one of those would that fix my issue? im asking cause most the time i see that it fixes cracked lcds and like i said mine isnt cracked on the outter glass its cracked inside and the screen stays black, but i know its on because the bottom buttons light up and i get sound and vibration just fine. so would lcd digitizer replacement fix this?

If you have insurance, I'd utilize that.

I'm sure all phone insurances with sprint don't cover severe physical damaged caused by you..

If you have the insurance, replacing the entire device would cost $150 and save you the time and trouble of fixing it. By far the easiest option if you have it.
If not, it depends on your level of expertise with electronic repair. The LED screen and digitizer (touchscreen) are glued together on this phone, meaning you wuld have to have a good deal of patience and skill with a heat gun in order to pull the two apart. Your best bet might be searching for a digitizer and LED screen in one piece. I've seen them for $260-270 on eBay.
I'm a Sprint technician, so feel free to ask any other questions and I'll help if I can. Sorry about your luck with the phone, bud!

[Q] Broken Screen

I recently replaced just the broken glass screen on my evo. When I turned it on now, the screen is all black now. I hear it still working, I hear SMS and phone calls, but cant see anything. I didnt replace the entire LCD just the clear part. When I was prying the clear screen off, it was sticking to the lcd, which also was cracked. So I got the screen off but the other part came with it. I dont know if it was connected to the LCD and it was broken off or if its ok seperated. Its just the dark looks like tinted glass that goes directly over the LCD and under the clear screen (digitizer). So, can anyone tell me if maybe I damaged the LCD screen.
Thanks in advance.
So before replacing the glass/digitizer, the lcd still worked fine? Based on your description it sounds like the lcd. You may just have a loose ribbon connection...have you tried redoing the ribbons?
I'm about to dive into the same mission. Thinking twice about it now.....
Yes the glass was broken for about 1 month but it still worked fine the LCD was working. I've tried reconnecting the ribbons various times also tried connecting the old glass digitizer, but still the same result. I'm not sure if that tinted screen was part of the LCD and is now broken or if I somehow damaged something else when I was connecting it.

to tell the truth changing just the glass is definitely the cheapest route, but from what I've read is more difficult than buying the whole replacement LCD. I paid $25 on eBay but the whole LCD is closer to like $75.

So you mean it is easier to purchase a digitizer and LCD that still connected as one piece (http://www.globaldirectparts.com/Sprint-HTC-Evo-4G-LCD-p/htc736815.htm) as opposed to doing the digitizer or LCD individually? If I went that route I would just pay a 3rd party cell phone repair shop to do the work for 100 bucks...then you can hold someone else accountable.
I found the LCD here for cheap: http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=250782149841&ssPageName=STRK:MEWNX:IT
Supposed to arrive tomorrow so I will find out if the lcd is indeed the problem
thanks for that link, I may have to try that.

[Q] Good place to go if broken screen?

I've searched around a bit, anyone got some good recommendations for buying a replacement screen and a guide on how to do it?
Is this all you need for a cracked screen?
http://cgi.ebay.com/NEW-HTC-EVO-4G-...702690?pt=PDA_Accessories&hash=item230a0125a2
That's the digitizer only (the glass on top of your screen), if that is what you need then this should help:
http://www.ifixit.com/Teardown/HTC-Evo-4G-Teardown/2979/1
I found it really hard to remove, even after heating the glue holding the digitizer down, I replaced mine with a full housing with screen and digitizer already assembled. It's more expensive but much easier.
Or you could go to your local Sprint Repair Center and see what they can do for you.

Look at the link I gave with the the tear down. That should explain it.
ETA: Basically, there is an LCD screen that displays the graphics, and overlaid on top of it is the digitizer that lets you interact with the LCD screen.
If you have insurance just take it to sprint and they will replace it for freeeee! If you don't sorry for taking up space.

No insurance!
insurance or not they could fix it for about $80, get your own digitizer and they might do it for labor only.
if a sprint store wont do it those other "cellphone" stores usually can but youre looking at $150-200
i bought 2 digitizers for $45 (1 wide cable 1 small cable) at a sprint store they changed it for me and took the other digitizer as payment.

Sprint store fixed mine for $35, no insurance. I was also rooted and they were like, we arent supposed to work on it if its rooted, so next time bring it in not rooted.
In addition, they replaced the whole front of my phone. Light leakage I had from below the buttons? Gone. Volume rocker a little creaky? Gone. Power button wear on the graphic? Gone. Small signs of wear on the side of the bezel? Gone. Hotspot on my LCD? Gone. It was worth the $35 for all that jazz, not to mention fixing my glass.
The replacement front they put on had a bad ear speaker, so I brought it back the next day, stock as can be. And they fixed that for free.
10 min later I was re-rooted and nandroid-backed-up back and rolling.
Definitely check with a sprint store first. I actually had to talk to two different people at different times to get them to admit that they could look at it (possibly first one was uninformed? Not sure).
I've taken my evo apart before. Removing the glass is a pain in the ass. I don't recommend it.
What you need is to just replace the LCD. It comes as a unit. If you look at your Evo, you will see a line completely around the sides. Dividing the "top" and "bottom". Popping off the battery cover and a few screws in the back and you will have the whole screen off in a minute. I personally haven't checked for replacement parts or the price of this LCD unit.
But IMO this will be the easiest and quickest way for you to do it.
Awesome, thanks a ton! It's for my brother. I will relay the message and post back with results.

Shattered Glass

Well, today was a say day for me, for I dropped my HOX on some concrete and shattered the glass, phone still works and lcd isn't damaged... but I was wondering if theres anyone here who knows a decent repair centers in the UK, i've seen this http://compare.ebay.co.uk/like/2511...ixedPriceItemTypes&var=sbar&adtype=pla&crdt=0 and i'm pretty sure thats all I need... I could even try myself
Perhsps HTC can sell us an original part, we could also ask for s one x+ battery. I don't know how much the one x digitisee and glass replacement would cost. The whole svren inc LCD is 160 IIRC so probably less than 100?
I also.have a damaged screen. My concern is whether the. Parts are really originals as claimed, be cause I'd like a real gorilla glass panel. Also, how do I reconnect the connectors I have to unplug to get the screen . Presumably it's obvious otherwise it would have been mentioned in repair guides.
HTC may repair and sell originals, how much for I don't know.
My LCD appears fine usually, but sometimes there is a yellow tint to some of the screen, presumably related to epoxy glue. Also I was pressing down on the Screen and now one of the cracks appear slightly blue Around the edges, not sure if this will change if I replace.
Finally I saw a story on xdA I think of a guy who Bricked his while trying to replace the screen.

From what I have seen in One X screen replacement videos and read in this and other forums the digitizer is not easily separable from the LCD. So most probably you'll have to replace the whole display assembly (i.e digitizer + LCD screen).
Nope
None of the replacement parts in this thread so far are close to genuine, and will be cheap crap.
http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/320929331645?ssPageName=STRK:MEWAX:IT&_trksid=p3984.m1423.l2649
This is what a genuine replacement looks like, and costs. If it's under £100, forget it; it's crap. If it comes as separate parts, it's crap. The One X screen is bonded at the factory across the entire area of the screen - you will never get a good screen if you assemble it yourself, or even if a repair centre does it. You'll get an air gap between the LCD and digitizer, and therefore it will look awful in daylight.

Call up HTC. I've done some research, seems to agree with what is posted above.
I feel your pain.. I have a small crack on the side of my S3 screen. How bad is it? If its smalland on the side check out an overlay Luke by Spectre. They are about 4mm thick and are cut to cover the whole face of the screen

[Q] Suggestions about screen replacement

Hi everyone,
First, I hope there's not another thread opened about this, I promise I did several searches and couldn't find one that was close enough
I have some question about screen replacement.
My dad just dropped his note 2 and damaged the screen (really unfortunate, it was really a little drop!), so I was looking into buying a screen from eBay and replace it myself. yes, it's tricky, but not all that much imo (big +1 to the guy from the YT channel LE55ONS, his videos about this kind of stuff are amazingly well done).
So, the screen is broken, the display is not, but if I bring the phone to the rapair guy he will almost certainly replace the screen and the display for €200+
If I buy something like this
http://www.ebay.com/sch/i.html?_trks...at=0&_from=R40
and replace it myself I can do the whole thing and spend some €50 tops.
I was thinking about this one
http://www.ebay.com/itm/Gray-Front-O...item3a7dc376c5
Here come the questions. Can anyone point me towards a good screen replacement for something around $20/30? Is the quality good? I asked the seller if it is actually gorilla glass 2 and he said yes.
Also, these don't have any connectors, the original one has 2. I can always use the connectors from the old screen, but if someone knows about a screen with connectors included, can they please let me know? There's nothing like asking to someone who has already done something like what I'm about to do.
Thank you everyone
Mine dropped from two feet and hairline cracked across the whole screen. I bought the full assembly LCD/digitizer. Did the repair per LE55ONS. AOK now. afterwards, i tried to pry apart the digitizer. In my Note II is is bonded with transparent gum covering the entire LCD. No way to replace only the digitizer.

If you buy the digitizer with the screen attached that's sooo much easier to replace, it's almost not even risky. But it costs somewhere around $200, the same as having it repaired by a professionist. Did you find a cheaper replacement?

Messed up screen replacement, is it repairable?

So I dropped my screen a few months back and the glass cracked. It still worked $100 percent and since the glass wasn't shattered it didn't prevent me from using it. It was only annoying me so i decided to order a new glass and replace the glass. During this replacement I completely ****ed the phone up.
From what I understand there are 3 separate pieces, the LCD, the touchscreen digitizer, and the glass itself. I was supposed to pull the glass apart from the digitizer but instead pulled both up leaving only the lcd behind. In the process I completely shattered both glass and digitizer and severed a ribbon cable.
I couldn't link to an imgur album and the images were too large to attach so i put them in a rar file. As you can see in the pictures my new glass is completely transparent and the old broken one has a tint to it, and an extra layer attached. That was how I came to the conclusion it was the digitizer. I have tried to see if I could just replace the digitizer but all the pictures I've seen don't show the cable that I severed. I have no idea what that cable does, only that it was connected to the tinted portion of the glass.
Important to note is that the phone works. I hear it power on and if i get a notification it plays the sound and vibrates no issue. I just can't SEE anything. Does this mean the LCD is broken too? Or will it only power up when it has the digitizer attached? Is this repairable, if so, how? if not, where did I go wrong?
At this moment I am not due for an upgrade til June, and I don't have more than $100 to spend on a replacement so if I can I'd like to fix this one to both save money and not have to downgrade to a lesser phone.

You can buy a replacement screen with a digitizer attached but it will cost over $100 and the way your phone is now it may not be worth doing yourself. You can get a pro install for around $200. You may want to wait for your upgrade then.

Yeah I was hoping there was a cheap fix but I screwed myself. I ended up buying one off eBay that has a bad charging port for $100. I'm just going to swap the mobo and I should be good to go.
Sucks I had to spend the money, it was a gift from my brother for a birthday tattoo, butit's a learning experience. If I ever try to tackle a glass replacement again I know what NOT to do.
