[Review] Exogear Exomount Universal Car Mount - General Accessories

A car mount is just a car mount, right? How exciting can a car mount get?
I've been using over a dozen car mounts over the years. They all work fine.....initially at least. But all of them have one problem in common. They don't last. Either the flimsy plastic parts start breaking or more likely the suction cup becomes unreliable causing the mount to fall off the windshield at the most inconvenient moments.
I picked the Exomount because I read many good reviews about it but here at last was a car mount with a difference because it claims to do things that other car mounts can only dream about - it can mount on textured surfaces like a grained wood surface or the dimpled surface of a car dash. Many reviewers also claim that it can mount on slightly curved surfaces.
I bit the bullet and got the Exomount. True enough, it is able to do all that it claimed it can do. I had a fun time trying it on all kinds of surfaces. When it comes to actual usage, the Exomount gave me a lot more choices on where to to mount my phone/gps in my car. I no longer have to mount it on my windshield if I don't want to.
The clamping jaws of the Exomount may look a little basic and primitive but it is actually a pretty good feature. It allows me to swap devices easily without the need to make adjustments to the clamping mechanism. It also allows me to mount my phone on it without blocking the camera so I can use my phone as a dash camera if I want to.
Best of all, I have been using it for more than 18 months now and it still works like new. The suction cup has yet to fail me, not even once.
The Exomount is an amazing car mount and I highly recommend it. A more detailed review of the Exomount can be found at Exogear Exomount Universal Car Mount Review.

The Exomount has a limit of up to devices with 5" displays. I have tried it with a few other phones such as a couple of Blackberries, an iPhone 4S as well as my 3.5" Garmin GPS.

Simple $3 DIY snap on vent mount (works with or without case)

I've always liked the simple use of the Garmin GPS clipping system, you just snap the unit in and that's it. When I saw the Kensington mounting system, I was ecstatic but then disappointed to find out that it would not work with my Seidio Innocase. I ended up staying with my MOBI vent mount but the vent clips aren't secure enough and the whole unit slides around when I turn and go over bumps so I went on ebay to purchased a Garmin GPS vent mount to use the coiled spring vent clips so it'll hug the vent. Turns out those spring clips don't attach to my MOBI vent mount. At this time I figured I'd just disassemble the two and get a $60 solution from ProClips. This is when I discovered my perfect solution. I just took a piece of foam from the MOBI unit and taped it to the wider clip of the Garmin GPS clipping unit and now my EVO holds securely with or without my Seidio case. It doesn't have to be a vent mount, as long as you have the Garmin GPS clippping unit and a 17mm ball mount. I've included a video:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ri0AWroEzhQ
So I pretty much just bought this GPS vent mount from ebay user chxee (seems to be the only one selling them for cheap starting at 99cents. I got mine for $2.75, I've seen some going for just 99cent free shipping.)
Garmin air vent mount nuvi 255w
The foam piece can be purchased from a crafts store.
Anyways, here are the pics:
Try heating it up with a hair dryer and see if you can permanently bend it. Should work, and might be the perfect solution.
i thought about that, it was my last resort. but now with this foam workaround i think the foam gives it an extra grip to keep it from sliding.
How does that mount hold in your vent. I see it's similar to this one. http://cgi.ebay.com/Car-Air-Vent-Mo...EVO-4G-Black-/390229156793?pt=PDA_Accessories
I had a vent mount for my iPhone 3G but it was significantly lighter than the EVO, haha.
I ordered one (suction for $4.99 since I like that better), but I'm wondering if there's anything better than foam to use since that looks a bit tacky. I want it to look professional. Might try the hairdryer route, but am afraid of snappage. Let me know if you have any ideas.
Springs = CHINSEY
I had this car mount for my Evo 4G for about 2 weeks, and literally after taking the phone in and out of the cradle (Correctly, I might add. I wasn't tearing it out, rather pressing the release button, and then removing.) about twice a day for not even two weeks, both of the plastic connectors on the arm-end of the spring loaded clamp snapped off. Any suggestions on how we can reinforce this? If it hadn't snapped, I LOVED THIS THING!

Looking for a windshield mount for my truck

I know there a few threads about windshield mounts but none of them have what I'm looking for. I am looking for a windshield mount for my 2000 Ram 1500. I want it to mount on the BOTTOM on the windshield and come to the edge of the dash so it will need to be fairly long. I switch between the Seidio Innocase II surface and the Seidio 3500mah extended battery so I need something that will accommodate both of those. I also need it to switch between portrait and landscape. The Kensington windshield mount for the Iphone looks like it would be great but it doesn't look like it will allow me to use my extended battery.
What have you guys found that might work for what I need?
ive been using this...
Scosche IUHW7 Windshield Vent Mount Kit.

Mountek MT5000
I bought this after finding a thread about it on another forum. Best accessory ever. Extremely quick and easy to install, rotates portrait/landscape ... can't complain about anything. It uses your CD slot - you just put it in the opening and clamp it down.
It's actually started to become a problem because I'm constantly distracted while driving by my cellphone now. It's just right there up in my face, gorgeous and begging to be played with.
Can't post the link since I'm new here ... but you can Google it easily.
I like the Clingo mount so much, I am going to mod the Sedio Active Innocase I have to make it work with it (smooth.velvty doesn't stick to Clingo).

I've used Ram Mounts in my Jeep, good stuff!
Sent from my Desire HD using XDA App
I've got a cheap Arkon universal mount I use in my car. Works great with my ballistics case or naked.
Dunno how long it is but I have am ikd z car and its mounted to the bottom of my windshield and comes to the dash edge. Probably 6in or more. It was tricky too cause my car has a high rake angle and I wanted it mounted so it wouldn't show Tue mount at all in videos. It does block half the camera but it clamps hard enough that you can scoot it up and get the camera free.
Sent from my (insert daily ROM name here) Evo 4g
When in its case, mine fits in my Garmin windshield mount

Why not just get the seidio innotraveler? It will fit both the extended battery and innocase power their website. I have it and love it, it actually extends pretty far.
Sent from my hand with XDA Premium installed
Because the seidio one is $50! Thats crazy for a windshield mount. I found one at bestbuy yesterday its by rocketfish and made for the iphone but it works with our phone to. It doesn't come to the edge of the dash but it will work.

Car dock that fits on 17mm ball mount (Garmin size ball mount)

I was wondering if anyone knows if any of the GS3 or universal car docks fit on a 17mm ball mount. This is the same size that some Garmin mounts use, and was also used with the T-Mobile G2X. I have a couple nice car mounts that I can use if I find a corresponding dock.
check out this clip;
youtube.com/watch?v=J0tR65xRld4
I saw that one, but I don't want to use a case. I will check how it works with the Nuvi mount I have just in case it does work.
Just use this adapter w/ the mount of your choice:
http://www.ebay.com/itm/Arkon-SP-SB-AMPS-KIT-AMPS-Conversion-Kit-for-17mm-Arkon-and-Garmin-Ball-Mounts-/360435691483?pt=GPS_Holders_Mounts&hash=item53eba42fdb
You probably could also use this one:
http://www.theaccessoryking.com/arkon-accessories/mounting-solutions/sm511-ipm511/slim-grip-smartphone-sun-visor-mount.html
Now that is an interesting piece. I'll keep it in mind.
What I'm working with is I just recently bought another Pro-Clip set for my G2x and my new car. Since I have a G2x dock that fits on the 17mm ball mount I just bought another Nuvi mount from Pro-Clip. An adapter from the ball mount to something else will mean there's four pieces involved, and that's a bit much. I could return the new ball mount and get a GS3 mount from Pro-Clip but I'll have to eat the shipping on that.

I didn't see that Arkon mount the first time I read your post. I'm ordering one now, thanks. I think it'll work nicely.
I got my Arkon mount yesterday and tried it out. I used one set of the extended legs and it holds the phone quite tightly and it mounts perfectly to my Garmin mounts. Thanks for the recommendation vw671.

So does this part (I guess Arkon SM511 / IPM511) come with a 17mm socket ? which we can use with the garmin ball mounts ?
I understand you bought this part removed the clip and used it with your existing/old 17mm ball mount...

I'll see if I can describe this accurately, you do have to be a bit careful. It seems that Arkon mounts are sold as a combination of 3 main pieces. There's the black back with the grips, the phone dock, that's part of every mount, some come with extended grips and some might not. For the S3 you need at least one pair of extended grips.
The second part is a bracket that slides into slots on back of the phone mount and has a 17mm socket on it. The third part is whatever mount your car needs, suction cup mount, air vent, or various other options. That has a 17mm ball on it.
I have seen some Arkon mounts for sale that appear to not have the socket portion. I bought a full kit with the suction cup mount.
This one shows a good view of the parts. On the suction cup mount is the clip that attaches to the back of the phone dock, that is needed. That one doesn't appear to come with the extended grips, so I wouldn't buy that one, but it does give you an idea of the parts.
I believe some Arkon mounts, which still use the same phone dock, forgo the ball mount and instead use a mount that attaches directly to the back of the phone dock.

Exomount vs GripGo vs iMagnet... which is best?

I know this question has been asked many times before, and I've read the threads for answers, but still haven't figured out what will work best. I need a good quality car mount, that's quick/easy to attach/detach, and that will work with a case. I'm currently using an Otterbox Commuter case, so the Infuse 4g mount is definitely out. I will be mounting it to the dash or windshield, so a vent/lighter type is a no-go. So far, the three that have caught my interest are the iMagnet mount, the Exomount 2 and the GripGo mount. they are all quick attach/detach mounts that will work with a case, but I can't decide which will be the most sturdy and durable.
The Exomount looks to be the better built, but what's the difference between the Exomount and Exomount 2 (aside from the different base?) Is the 2 built with better materials or something? How easy/quick is the attach/detach of this mount?
The GripGo mount is very interesting, which seems to be made of the same material that the Exomount's suction cup is made of. It consists of a bunch of tiny suction cups, which (supposedly) grip the phone very tightly. My main concern is dust... although it can be washed, I just don't want to have to wash it all the time to maintain a good grip. A big draw to this mount is the large arm it's attached to, which is much longer than the other two and provides more placement options.
The iMagnet is a brilliant idea, but I'm not sure about the execution. I've heard that the magnet isn't very strong when placed inside a case, and on a very bumpy road it can lose grip of the device. Even though I'm using an Otterbox case, I don't like the idea of my device flying off the mount and bouncing around on my dash/floorboard.
If anyone has used these mounts with their SGS3, what was your experience with them? Are there any better options that I've overlooked? I'm looking for honest opinions, good or bad, so I can make the best choice. Any info/input/advice is greatly appreciated!
i voted others.
im using the mountek car mount and it's been great. don;t have to worry about the suction cup losing suction and it's very stable. also fits my s3 with the trident kraken case, which is a pretty big case lol.
The Mountek mount looks interesting, but I'd like to keep my CD player functional... my buddies and I produce music, and sometimes we have CDs to trade (as they can be used in CD decks for mixing purposes.) I'm fine with suction cup mounts, they've always worked great for me. YMMV.

you can still play CDs with the mount attached.
Whenever these mount threads pop up I suggest my favorite: the Arkon Mobile Grip sticky dash mount. I've used it in several cars with numerous phones, including the GS3 and like it because of it's small footprint and it's versatility; my gf uses it in her Scion with their Mega Grip holder for her GS3.
It's a dash mount that can be put at nearly the level of a vent mount, which is my preferred location. It can also be used as a windshield mount.
And the fact that it's only $18 is pretty solid.

That looks a lot like the Exomount, but the clip part is a bit different. I actually like the Exomount's clip better, as it's low profile and "sticks out" a bit less. I'll definitely add that to my list of options though, and I appreciate the suggestion!

The Exomount is actually a pretty cool mount. What I like about the arkon is that it has an adjustable arm, so I can raise or lower the height of the phone; I also like that I can insert and remove my phone one-handed. I don't think you can do that with the Exomount.

Will it fit a galaxy note 2 in an otterbox commuter case?
I just got an iottie dash mount and love it. It's solid and loprofile and fits the s3 with a case on.
I have the GripGo - it doesn't look like it should work, but it does. I have a Mophie case which I wasn't sure would work well, but it does.
been using the imagnet for a while and love it. best mount ive used. Its definitely the most convenient because there are no parts, clips, or arms. Just stick it on. done.

ProClip + Mountek Snap

I had been using the Mountek nGroove Snap for almost two years, but the thing they don't tell you in the product description is that the Mountek will compress and destroy the foam protector in your CD Player. When you take it out, your CD Player will look like a Hillbilly's smile.
I just bought a new car, and I didn't want that to happen again. I've always been interested in ProClip's offerings, since they are custom molded to fit your car, but the high price always put me off. For my car, I'd have to shell out 30 bucks for the custom mold and another 50 for the adjustable iOauto Pro Magnetic mount. Also, I couldn't find any posting anywhere that said that the iOauto Pro would hold the Nexus 5 securely without adding the included metal plate. I prefer my Nexus 5 naked.
My solution combines the Mountek nGroove and ProClip that more or less works perfectly with my Nexus 5 (I'll get to the drawback in a second)
Since I already had the nGroove, all I needed to buy was the Custom ProClip mount for my car ($30) and an AMPS ball adapter ($9.95), which I found on Amazon (search for iBOLT AMPS Adapter Plate).
The iBOLT comes with screws that are a little too big for the ProClip mount, so what I did was widen the holes on the ProClip with a power drill until they fit. Since both the iBOLT and ProClip use the AMPS standard, the holes lined up perfectly.
I'm happy with the finished product, although the ball on the iBOLT and the ball of the Mountek have a different texture. This made the Mountek piece sit a little too snug against the iBOLT ball. I'm thinking about sanding down the iBOLT ball until it can click into place.
Thanks for reading!
that looks awesome. id love to see some more pictures of it actually in the car. i might have just found my car clip!
Thanks for the setup. I was looking for a solution to this exactly. BTW you can take that yellow sticker off if you didnt know.
Thought that Proclip mount looked familiar. I have an XV Crosstrek and it looks like you either have an XV or impreza.
