Alright, just got a new used car.
For my current phone (Captivate) and any future phones/tablets I buy (Nexus/7) I just wanted to know which decks that anyone out there has been using that works well for calls and playing music.. My BT Motorola T305 speakerphone is a bit spotty and would like to just integrate everything into the deck.
For reference, the devices will be plugged in while in the car, so power consumption is not an issue. Thanks all.

I have the alpine 136bt and it works great with my phone.

Jabras are usually the best for cars..try them out..
Dension Car Dock(nice design, power usb and audio line or FM) or bluetooth kit for stock radio.
I have only used Kenwood and Alpine decks.
The Kenwood has better noise cancelling external mic for calls. Problem with Kenwoods was the bluetooth features weren't the same across decks, as price went up you got more bluetooth profiles(say like A2DP). i.e low end deck has bluetooth for calls only, higher end had you could call and stream music with car stereo as output speaker without having to hook in a cable.
The Alpine was more of the same, didn't like the external mic as much. For Apple products which you don't have it had integrated Pandora to control the app from the stereo. My next purchase may revolve around how it handles the phone address book.

I can't find a simple friggin BT A2DP reciever for my application.....
I want to be able to listen to music and calls over BT plugged into the auxillary port on my van's stereo head unit. I need a BT reciever with a 3.5mm output: I have found the opposite (a transmitter to plug into your mp3 player). I don't need LCDs and buttons and controls, etc.
And if I buy a A2DP headset (speakers only), how does WM use a mic during a phone call? Does it use the phone's mic, or will it just not let me use it as a handsfree for phone calls?

That was actually on of the units I was looking at.
Will that run plugged into the charger? I know alot of BT stuff disconnects while charging. I would prefer to just leave it plugged into the charger (turns on and off with the ignition).

If its A2DP only, WM will route all aspects of the call back to the phone, so you'll have to either hold your head to the phone, or use speaker phone... but either way no phone call sound will come from your van, except for the initial ringing.

Actually, when I have my DS200 plugged into my 5.1 surround, I can call people AND hear them through the speakers, suggesting that you do hear people. Am I right in thinking your van will be the same concept?
And yes, you can have it plugged in and running simultaneously

All right, I am not the only one who is looking for the solution.
I searched ebay thoroughly and asked sellers the same question about running while plugged into the charger. Got the same answer - 'no'. If it is not a mandatory feature, you may try ebay, DX for cheaper (within $15) solution.
At some point, I was also looking for an MP3 player which turns on-off with ignition and has an audio out. FM transmitter delivers very poor performance, as it is impossible to find an unused frequency for a trip as short as 30min. I was out of luck there. Then I thought about BT solution. Nothing good there. Now I use a used WM Standard phone (bought from, again, ebay for ~$7). Of course, it has to be manually turned on and the unit has scratches all over, but the S/W features and sound quality are awesome.

That's b/c the DS200 is not A2DP only, it also supports the handsfree protocol. Certain receivers are aimed at only transmitting music, and thus they only support A2DP. If he wants calls to go through the speakers on his van, he should avoid those types of receivers.

anyone have any experience using bluetooth to stream audio(music) to a car receiver? how is the qualitly?

I got one for my truck, I THINK it's model: Dual XHD7714.
I've owned mine over 6 months now, run it hard, have had everything connected to it and it works well.
After I got my Evo, I started exclusively using the Bluetooth connectivity for Pandora and local media I had copied to the SD card. Never had any issues. Phone calls come through clear as well. You can even control the basic play functions from the head unit as well (to your phone).... such as skip songs in Pandora, pausing, etc.
I have it hooked up to multiple amps (full speakers, subs, etc)
No issues at all.
My Evo and the radio connect very quickly every time I get in the truck.
Not bad for $100.
I have had three of the Sony Xpload series recievers, and all of them have worked flawlessly using Bluetooth on my Evo. The only issue I have seen is that with the windows down or a loud interior the call clarity is poor, but no worse than using the phones speakerphone.
I use BT exclusively...no more cd's, no more radio, etc. Just make sure your head unit can stream...a lot of them advertise BT, but most will only do BT calling.
Agreed. I just put in a Kenwood DNX6160 with integrated BT. It's an awesome radio. The lower models require a separate BT module... How silly is that... Except that the lower models + the BT modules enable the A2DP, while my higher model with integrated BT can only do phone.

I have a JVC KW-AVX740 with built-in BT (audio & phone use). The audio is decent to good but the phone use is terrible. I have a Plantronics Voyager Pro for my calls (overall, a great bt device).
At this point, I don't use my phone much to listen to music. It is convenient not to carry another device...but I've been carrying 2 devices for so long, it's habit. Plus I don't want to compromise my battery life & phone usage (for music purposes)...as it is my primary communications device.
I have a hands free bluetooth system in my car. I noticed that while I play music via auxiliary cord, and someone calls me, the Bluetooth isn't working. Anyone else having same issue?

I have the exact same issue in my car, tried everything to get around it. You just have to unplug the auxiliary cable when you get a call incoming.

Get an A2DP cd player and you don't need to worry about auxiliary. It's all done through bluetooth. This is what I got

It has something to do with TTY settings. I also have this issue.
I hope someone could figure out how to fix this. I have to take out the aux cord whenever I get a call in my G35.
*UPDATE* So I did some searching and it looks like the original Epic had the same issue but was fixed via OTA update. Hopefully Samsung/Sprint is aware of this issue.
other forums have mentioned this problem "Received confirmation from Samsung that there will be no fix for this. It was made this way on purpose. I guess the Epic 4g does the same thing. what possible reason would there be to have to unplug the auxillary jack to use bluetooth? it's an incredible inconvenience. and i would rather not use an A2DP adapter to play music, i'm assuming that this would eat up more battery life than using the auxillary 3.5 mm jack

This is some type of design flaw.

This is a design flaw. Bluetooth should be completely independant of the audio jack.
What they want is you to use the dock for use in the car so it can be hands free. Unfortunately if its true they don't intend to fix with an OTA then the only option is to use the functionality they have given you. The headphone jack takes priority over other connections in this instance. Sorry. I am sure you don't want this to be the resolution.

Take the car out of the equation. I am using a Jabra headset to take calls, but have the phone plugged into an external speaker to listen to music at my desk.
Call comes in, I have to unplug the speaker to use bluetooth.
What dock would affect this?

Similar scenario for me. I listen to Sirius/XM through earbuds at work. When the phone rings, I have to unplug the earbuds to hear through my Bluetooth headset. Then I have to tell the caller to wait while I exit the Sirius app because it keeps on playing through my Bluetooth headset.
Wrote about this issue to my local Samsung office.

That's the way device works. Only one source can be used: jack or bluetooth.
Not both together.
I don't have words to describe how this is lame.
Just stupid, audio should be independant of the source.
All my past phones have worked fine. Evo would pause the music, I take the call, when I end the call, the music picks back up and plays.
Terrible design, and while I could live with it if Samsung agreed it should be fixed, them simply saying "thats how it is, live with it" is not acceptable. I will not get another samsung phone because of their poor service.
Let alone the stupid kernel partition they use.

Hmm, reading the other thread got me thinking.
I know there are different AUX cables, some have two bars (looking at the male part that plugs into the jack) and some have 3.
I wonder if there is a different behavior between the two. Maybe the phone is thinking there is a headset plugged into the aux jack.

I can confirm that problem is fixed.
When there is incoming call, it's routed to bluetooth headset, music is shutdown.
Navigation warnings in headset are heard as short beeps.

Does anyone know of such a thing as a Bluetooth audio hub?
I want to connect my GNex to my existing car stereo via bluetooth, I guess plugged in to the stereo via line input.
It needs to route both audio from media files (podcast) and calls. I assume that it would therefore need a mic for calls.
But in addition to this, I have my music collection on a separate mp3 player (also with bluetooth). So ideally, I'd like both devices to be able to connect, to listen to music from one device but have calls interrupt it from another.
Does such a thing even exist?
At the moment I have a line cable from my GNex to the stereo and a crappy bluetooth visor kit. I have to swap the line cable from my phone to my mp3 if I want to change what I'm listening to. It's far from ideal, and the GNex doesn't even fit in it's holder when I'm listening, thanks to the headphone socket being on the bottom of the device.
i have the jabra sp700, it works via BT to the jabra, then FM to stereo. the fm modulations gets a lot of static because i live in a high radio traffic area and the sound seems quieter than via aux input.
i made a custom aux input for my car and i have been using that lately, sound is much better, more clear.
you may get better results if you used something that goes from BT to wired output to plug into your aux input.

That's exactly what I'm looking for, though I guess it'd also need a mic built in.
I've used an FM transmitter before, but as you say the need to keep retuning is a problem. Plus, the need to plug it into the bottom of my GNex means it's not an option because of the cradle, which hides the output.
The Belkin thing looks good, but what I don't get is why an FM receiver costs about £20, a basic BT headset or visor set costs about £20 but something in between (i.e. a BT receiver with wired output) costs £80??

I've just ordered one of those Been using a cheap BT -> aux thing i got off ebay a while ago but it doesn't have a mic so decided to get the Belkin.

It works good, sometimes you will find hitting the button twice to resume music does not work. NO biggie either toggle Bluetooth on\off or manually hit play on the GNex. For some reason though, it will re pair but not resume music, calls always work as normal over Bluetooth.
Does it work with two devices? I guess not? (i.e. music from one, calls from another?)

In the thread they stated that the BH-214 supported dual devices, not sure if they got the the 221 to do the same.

The Nokia ones look perfect! Is the mic part of the little clip unit? Guess so...
TomTom MKI9200 here. Two phones synced and supports A2DP. Works well with GNex 4.1. Supports USB mass storage, SD card and regular line in too.
No idea about standalone MP3 player via BT. Does anyone still use them?

I have the Kensington one, works perfect. It adds bluetooth handsfree/streaming to any car that has a aux in. No need for batteries.
In my Nissan Sentra 2012 it has Bluetooth, but for calls only. When I play music it plays from my phone instead of car, and in Bluetooth setting the car has call capabilities only. I have a rooted LG g2, and will be willing to try anything. Is there any tricks to make it think its a call but plays music instead.

I've never heard of anything like that?
There are $25 bluetooth devices out there which plug into your stereo's 3.5mm aux input if it has one. They work very well for calls and music.

are you sure ? all car radios ive seen have bluetooth total audio playback. Make sure its setup on your phone correctly too.. need to check that nissan sentra lol
I found out its something about not supporting one of the Bluetooth modes, if I payed for extra features it probably would have worked but I found a app called btmono, it's on the play store and it makes the car think I'm in a call and plays music like that, but the sound quality is horrible but that because of the trick they used to allow music through fake call. On the car it says I'm in a call with my own phone number
no a2dp that is ... i have an (older) alpine aftermarket unit, BT for calls is just great, but there ist absolutely no streaming going on. i use the front-aux for that matter.
Google has made great advances in supporting non-A2DP cars. My 2010 Chevy Malibu has Bluetooth but not A2DP. I can do Google Now and other voice commands through the phone system.
You do have to change some settings. Specifically in Google Now Settings you have to enable Bluetooth headset support. Once you do that, you can then call up Google Now and it will route audio.
There are a couple of apps out there that will pump stereo audio through the phone profile. But I don't recommend them. You're vastly better off with a 3.5mm to A2DP adapter.
If you want Bluetooth in your car, but you don’t want to spend the money and/or time to install a new head unit, you have three options, depending on your car’s setup and whether your primary interest is in making phone calls or listening to music. If you’re fortunate enough to have an aux-in port (an audio-input jack that fits a plug like the one on your headphones), a Bluetooth kit with an aux-in cable is the easy choice—it’s the most reliable alternative and the one that will produce the best overall sound and call quality. Well, at least I won't be the first one to necro-post on this...
It's more common than you think guys, especially with the older cars, *designed* when BT was available, but smartphones were new. Considering how lengthy the car design process is, I'm not surprised 2012 models are still affected.
On top of solutions posted above (well, if you care about sound quality, there's just one solution basically and TheWirecutter folks have done a lot of research and ruled Himbox HB01/Himbox HB01 Plus the king of them all), you might be in luck if there's an aftermarket unit available for your model which will plug into the back of your entertainment system and have both BT Phone and BT Multimedia profiles. You might need some tools and partial disassembly will be required to install.
There was one of these available for my 2008 Audi and while it was extremely pricey (about US $200) it's definitely cheaper than buying a new car.
