updating a source tree

For developers: Say I have a CM source tree and I want to start building LineageOS instead. To save bandwidth, time, and disk space I don't want to start from a fresh "repo init". What set of commands can I use to convert my CM source tree to LineageOS?
For bonus points, separate instructions for a repo downloaded via a simple "repo init" vs one using the --reference option.

The only thing I had to do different was to use the normal repo init command (not using ssh) on step 1, then the rest worked perfectly.
repo init -u git://github.com/LineageOS/android.git -b cm-14.1

FP3 Source code is released

Just an information for the community.
On the Fairphone code page (code.fairphone) on Dec 7, 2019 the kernel source code for the Fairphone3 was released.
This is significantly quicker than it has been with the FP2, which is great. Fairphone said they were working to setup up a github repository. As this still seems to take a while, a user did set up a github repository with the name "android_kernel_fairphone_sdm632"

I've copied a device tree from apollo (Mi 10T) with minor changes. I've also built a vendor tree from the latest MIUI 12 Firmware release
Please feel free to contribute as I've never done this stuff before
