Samsung over HTC - Galaxy Note II Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I know some of you guys choose Samsung over HTC. My question is why? I've always been a Sense person, but have been thinking about getting a Note II when released. I'm wondering what are the pros and cons of touchwiz as opposed to Sense.
P.S I'm hoping that there are a lot of custom ROM's developed for this beast because I am a flashoholic

Usually quicker updates, removable batteries, sd cards, not having sense , generally easier to hack....

HTC updates way quicker than Samsung ...any only until the one x did we have removable batteries, and sd card...
I will give Samsung one thing that it is easier to hack ...but that's cause there is nothing to hack...just a simple ui
But I'm also thinking of getting a note 2 ..because imo, it's going to be one hell of a phone

Really? Samsung leaks firmware almost on a weekly basis. Don't have to worry about locked bootloaders. Just a much easier experience with Samsung.

I liked HTC before they started locking bootloaders. Never will I support a device with a locked bootloader.

Samsung updates their international phones much quicker than anyone else. It's only when the US carriers get involved that Samsung phones don't get updated quickly.
We'll see how much better the updates are in the US now that Samsung is in a better position to dictate the handling of their phones on US carriers.

Samsung has unlocked bootloaders?

Yes (Except for Verizon's Galaxy SIII).
There is a flash counter that increments whenever you flash non official rom with PC Odin but:
You can use other flashing methods that won't increment the counter (mobile odin, CWM ...)
Since ICS, there is an app (Triangle Away) that resets the counter (so you get your warranty back). You can also use a USB jig to reset it even on older Android versions.
So yeah, unless other OEMs change their bootloader's policy, I'll stick with Samsung.

On the Samsung phones can you talk on the phone from the back side, opposite the screen like htc? And does touch wiz use a swipe style keyboard ?
Sent from seti alpha 6

The root process is much easier on a Samsung. Plus you have the added benefit of Odin. Other than that, its all personal preference.

Why on earth would you do that?
There is no earpiece on the back. The mouthpiece is on the bottom i think, so for speaker phone you could.

Never had a problem with Sprint returning my EVO 4G, on my 5th one now. 3 bad screens, one bad usb connector, 1more forgot whatever.
Swap out was easy but I should not have had that many bad phones. The screens were not a dead or stuck pixel but major problems like half of it going blank, super pixelated for some reason, and just noise over the whole screen. Time to try Samsung here.

With HTC the sensor knows what side of the phone your on and turns on the appropriate speaker, thus no face on the screen

I think he's trying to mention the flip to speaker feature with sense. If you are in the middle of a voice call, you can sit your phone face down on a table and it will automatically switch to speaker phone mode.

Ah, thank you for explaining it that way. The way he was explaining, it sounded like it was for people to talk on their phone backwards on their face.

It is, all HTC phones do that.. not just place it on the counter for speaker phone but talk on the back side of the phone.. what I think is odd is that anyone actually likes having there greasy face against there screen.. so to answer my question which would have been pretty simple is no, the Samsung phone will not do that, ok thank you for the answer, still want a note 2 but now I won't be surprised when it doesn't do something I have become very used to

Im thinking of getting the galaxy note 2..

But I hate that home button, and looks like a bigger s3. I have grown a soft spot for soft navigation buttons, all the customizations you can do to it. I dont want to leave the galaxy nexus but with upcoming rumors, no one knows what it will be or who will manufacture it or when it will be released or how many?
This galaxy nexus needs the specs bumped up quite a bit, including a better camera etc. Are any of you guys jumping ship and going for the note?

I'm in the same boat as you. My only complaint with the Gnex is the sub par camera and the weak battery (yes i got the 2100 mAh too). There are rumors of another nexus to drop in November, also a 5.5" HTC phone. Too bad I can't have them all. #Firstworldproblems.
Or what about the HTC one X+?
Did they ever fix their multi tasking issue? I know the build quality of htc is much better than samsungs.

Aside from the hardware home button I like the form factor of the Note 2... then I look at the original Note, see that it's still on Gingerbread and suddenly realize that if it isn't branded as a "Nexus" device, it'll probably be stuck on whatever version of Android it ships with forever.
No thanks.
go ahead and leave. they all come back, they always do :cyclops:
I hate the fact that the note 2 just looks like a bigger gs3, the physical home button is basically the deal breaker for me. The htc one x+ also has those permanent navigation buttons, and for at&t they wont even be that cool red color but white. at least thats what I see from the at&t one x+ pics.
I'm worried the new nexus wont be made by samsung and will lose the led notifications and soft nav buttons, which to me visually keeps me hooked with its customizations..

This is true, but probably a smart move with the note 2 or htc one x+. With the google nexus usually software is available immediately. I'm going to stay nexus, I'd just like them to hurry it up already and release some info lol.
Smart move...your gonna spend 600+ on a phone that does nothing new I came from a galaxy S1 that's a big jump the only thing that would make me jump is a sd card slot or a large amount of storage my nexus got 500mb left and a better display galaxy nexus display look great

[Q] Getting Google Nexus phone for family member - any issues I need to be aware of?

Just a background info: I have a young family member that needs phone and I have bought her at first a "cheap" Android phone from Virgin Mobile and that was a disaster (slow, froze all the time, etc.). I replaced that with a supposedly powerful phone - Virgin Mobile Motorola Triumph. That is another disaster, as the phone was launched half-baked. If you Google this phone, there are issues from the phone ringing only once to running out of storage because the phone keep generating large alogxx files.
Anyways, she is getting tired with these issues (and so am I!!) and I want to get her a pure Google phone - the Nexus. But before I jump in and buy this, is there any issues with this phone that I need to be aware of? Keep in mind the issues I mentioned above, which made the using an Android phone really painful for her.
Thanks!
Pure Google =No Issues. It's kind of understood around here, not that I expect everyone who posts here to know that.
I would venture to say it's as good as it gets, the Galaxy S III has better specs, but a few issues and hey, you can't beat Pure Google, we'll be first to Android 4.2, whatever it's called.

nah, just don't go anal on the screen.
AMOLED screens get burn in from images that don't change over long periods of time (nav bar), but that's... eh no big deal otherwise Samsung wouldn't use AMOLED, also found in S III BTW...
You'll see a lot of threads about weird charging behavior, that's this phone's main issue. Every phone has its issues and this one is rather menial, not like a power button that tends to break...
I haven't updated my profile for the new GalNex....

The screen is an issue look at the sticky on the top of the Q&A section.
After updating to JB, the sound is ridiculously low. Volume+ is the solution for ICS but not working on JB. That is the main issue of this phone.
Don't want to put you off but I have had issues with the hardware. The USB port is dodgy and known to fail, with lots of strange charging behavior as already mentioned in this thread. Also they are prone to dieing and you have to plug it into a USB port with no battery to revive it. Maybe I was unlucky with early versions, or have they still not fixed it?

Not us...people who want to get one, they should hold off. It cant be worse than the current one...that would suck. (not saying its a bad phone...just saying that they new one shouldn't be worse than the old one) :fingers-crossed:
Aside from the screen burn-ins and discoloration in low brightness, the phone is actually fantastic.
Even the relatively outdated 5MP camera is actually pretty good. Although it has less MP, the quality of the sensor is actually great.
Also, just give your daughter the pure Google experience. It's almost flawless in terms of software (IMO), so it'll be a welcome change from her previous two phones. Just treat her well with the G'nex before she gets iPoisoned and we lose another poor soul to the dark side:crying:

EXACTLY!! She has been eyeing the iPhone 5!
But honestly, she was getting tired with the Android "experience", especially with the last 2 phones. The Motorola Triumph was $299 and it was piece of crap! This gives Android a bad name. This 3rd phone, the Nexus, HAVE to be the right one... seeing it's Google who sells them, not Virgin Mobile or some other carrier.

Uh oh... not nit-picking here but its must be pretty bad that flashing a custom ROM is needed to increase the volume size... Hmmm.. I wish the Nexus is sold in a retail store so I can try it out! I believe Google charges 15% restocking fee for returning a phone?
One person complains about volume, no need to call off the bets.
I admit I have to turn it up more than my Thunderbolt, but it's always loud enough without closing in on the right side of the volume bar.

Bad build quality?

I just replaced my HTC One for a S4, because my HTC had a bad camera, and not wanting to deal with it again i replaced it with a trusty galaxy.
Now, unfortunately, the build quality is a lot worse than my S2 T989.
The first week, i got scratches on everything that is chrome, and it's very visible on the camera chrome sidings, and the speaker for calling infront.
Today, i removed my case, to find that my back cover has a CRACK! I've never seen this anywhere. It's basically a crack like if this was a glass back. Anybody have this?
Also, the lag is killing me! I wish i had kept the HTC and just got a replacement ! I'm rooted and tried all roms btw.

I doubt the lag problems are just me. It starts with being fast when in install the rom, and the 2nd day is laggy as f*ck, HECK EVEN MY S2 WAS fASTER OPENING THE CAMERA!
Now for the scratches, it's probably in all S4's as the plasticy chrome is easily scratched, and its already too late, because i got the phone a week and some ago. They said i can't replace it anymore because i already did the HTC One to S4.

My battery plate has the exact same "glass" crack on the back, fortunately I was going to replace it anyways with a i9500 one, still baffled on how it got there as I'm extremely careful with my phone. I also have the Spigen cover you have.
I'm running Wicked V3 with its stock kernel, no lag whatsoever; first rom I've used that's trouble free, I've always had bad experiences with custom roms, even on my ex i9300.
In my T989 the roms are very good. I agree, wicked V3 is the one i use, but it still degrades in performance overtime.

Lmfao, i never had any HTC phone except the HTC One. The s4 isn't superior in anything but software, which is why i traded it. The HTC One has very good software that is lag free compared to the S4. But, it's so much different than what im used to in my S2 and so much extra steps to do stuff so i hated it.

I don't really notice any lag on mine other then going to home screen caused by the s voice but that can be turned off.
But my first s4 had a stiff power button and this one will be going back do to a blue haze coming up about a inch from the bottom of the screen.

My s4 has a weird home button than can ''bend? is that normal?
I didn't want to start a new thread & so I'm posting about a little issue that I noted today.
While cleaning my phone case today I noticed a certain crack/fissure on the 4 corners of the side bezel on my S4. Is this a faulty bezel or is it just part of the normal installation of the bezel?
I've never dropped the phone and it's been in a case since day 1. I haven't even removed the plastic covering on the bezel that comes with it as you can note in the pictures.
Could someone verify that this exists on their devices or not? I'd like to know before I go through the hassle of getting it replaced from Samsung.
The pictures are attached and I've highlighted the problem areas in red. I realize the clarity isn't the greatest but the issue appears clearly.
I also have that, so i think its normal

I came from the One X to here. By "lively" you mean dozens of angry people that HTC does a staggering roll out of updates. A single update can take months.
Daily posts of "is it ready yet" is more annoying than useful.
As a flagship phone it will probably receive updates for a while, just don't expect hourly updates and groundbreaking changes. Samsung is still suoporting the S2 after all.

Yeah its true the discussions on the one x forums where kind of oftopic, and one of the biggest reasons i switched to samsung is the extremelu poor update history of the htc phones.. and in favor for the samsung mobiles their great update history for older phones.. and of course the selection of custom roms, but i actually like the stock rom and the ux (wierd maybe) , but its really working well in my opinion and therefor i hope to see this phone supported by samsung for atleast a year or two ahead

I used to have the One X too and I can tell you, I also miss the active discussions. Not about updates but S-OFF. The other thing I miss is the terrific build quality of the One X.

I switched to Note 2 from, well technically from S3, but that I had for 2 months only. Before that I had an HTC Sensation, and believe me, on the surface the build quality was fabulous. I never used any case or plastic lamination due to the rubberized finish of back cover and even after 5-10 brutal falls on concrete and marble floors, it got only 3 minor scratches. The sense UI was fabulous with its widgets and very clean looking icons.
But there were more bad things than good. The great looking body being made of aluminium and having wrong placement of antenna for wifi and cellular made it worst phone i ever had in terms of reception. Hold it tight enough and it will loose ALL the signals. The touch points in back cover needed to touch the points on the phone body and within every 15 days, there use to be carbon build up making things even worse. Cleaning the points use to resolve the situation.
I don't need to talk about updates, everyone is familiar about that front with HTC. Though i would say the 4.0.3 update they gave was very polished and fast. But that's about it. It received no further updates even with its capable hardware. I believe that was most probably due to the dual sided sword, sense ui. They didn't want to give the newest version of it on old phones and at the same time didn't want to waste their resources on upgrading the old version.
It didn't had 3G video calling, it was slow as hell at times and there were no updates. There were software on play store that were jellybean only and there was no hope of getting it on Sensation. That was the reason for my switch.
Samsung, on the contrary has a build quality that is ok for me. I don't mind the plastic of they just make the back cover and sides more durable maybe with better quality poly carbonate material. Currently, its very prone to scratches and a case is needed if you want to keep the device in good condition, for resale purposes later. Touchwiz is also a dual headed sword in a way. It looks same on all devices and its hard to distinguish an older device from newer and thereby makes the experience a bit boring but that i think is also the reason it is easy for them to upgrade older devices. they have to make comparatively less changes to the touchwiz ui while upgrading. And they never made touchwiz the selling point for their phones in their marketing strategies. This is where HTC failed. Instead of selling hardware they are more focused on selling their software, making them shy of updating their older devices.
Samsung's update pattern is quite good and I am happy with what i am getting as part of the deal. I feel no regrets in spending those INR 31600 odd bucks on this phone. I do regret of doing the same on HTC Sensation. There is no way I am going to switch to HTC for years to come no matter how beautiful phones they create unless they change their marketing fundamentals which I highly doubt they will. I am more of a functionality guy rather than beauty. For me getting the latest android versions and having my video calls over 3g (native, not with skype etc) is important.
I totally agree with krazy_about_technology. From my experience with HTC devices, it never update the Sense UI that came with the phone. The most that is usually done is to upgrade the OS. In the past HTC used this method of marketing to keep people to buy its newer phones because it releases dozen of phones a year.
Samsung on the other hand almost always updates (with new UI and new features) the older phone after the new one comes out. It's a long and dull wait but at least we get it after the wait.

Yeah I don't miss my old sensation at all. I'll miss this phone if I ever part ways with it though.

Why i cant update my note 2 through keis?
Sent from my GT-N7100 using xda app-developers app
I do also have a problem with the upgrade, I have the GT-N7105 with 4.1.2 and when I try to update over the air i get a fault message "Firmware upgrade failed, try using Kies." I have tried via Kies also but when doing that I get a strange behaviour from Kies, the program downloads the software and then the program just close itself on the computer. I waited for about half an hour but nothing more happened and no further information on the phone either, just like nothing happened.
Of course the phone was connected to the computer and identified by Kies, which also informed of the new firmware available for the device.
Any ideas of what to do?

[Q] What you like/don't like about this phone?

All - I searched and didn't find a thread like this. Happy to be redirected.
My wife have a pair of Samsung Galaxy S 4G that are starting to show their age a bit. Considering the HTC One as an upgrade.
This is one of the phones T-Mobile has listed when I filter by Android/4G/Wifi calling.
Curious if some of you can chime in with what you like and don't like about the phone.
Thanks much in advance!
I loved my Galaxy S 4G (aka Galaxy S1). If you like Touchwiz, then you'll like the S4. People say the HTC One is great for it's one-piece metal design, but I think that's a moot point if you're going to put a case on the phone. Plus metal exteriors scratch and dent easier than plastic. You can't swap batteries or use external microSD cards on the HTC One. The microSD isn't a big deal for me, but the phone's battery will start to degrade after 12-18 months. I also think the S4 has more support from the developer community and accessories manufacturers than the HTC One.
The one positive of the HTC is it will get 4.4 KitKat in 3 months, whereas the S4 probably won't see it until 2015 (LOL). I also like the HTC's front facing speakers.

The only thing I don't like about the S4 is the inability to take a screenshot through the phone itself. Other than that, I'd put my CM 10.2-powered S4 against a HTC One X any day of the week.
Oh, and the lack of a physical keyboard. Having been with Android since the days of the G1, that and the trackball/trackpad were the selling points of that old iPhone-killer.

Then you have set up something wrong. That's a standard CM feature for all versions on all phones.
The only thing I don't like about this phone is the weak vibration. That's the only real drawback to it.

Okay, I got it working. I was trying it through a screenshot app, but the native CM screenshot works. Thanks.
I'm torn on the button placements.
The power button
On one hand it's easier to press with the button on the side and not on the top (coming from an LG g2x) but it's too easy to press when i'm gripping the phone or adjusting the volume
Home button.
Still getting used to the non touch home button, I find myself touching it more than pressing it. also with my gloves on i find myself touching the bottom of the screen when i push the button.
But still vs the HTC one (which is a great phone) i still prefer the s4, mainly due to the removable battery and SD card slot. I also found the htc one got a little hotter in my hand then the S4 but i'm pretty sure thats up for lots of debate. The only upside of the HTC is the speakers
Thanks for the replies! Didn't realize the HTC One didn't have a replacable battery!
