[Q] How to rebind search key with another app? - G2 and Desire Z Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I am using Mimicry and I stumbled up on this really nice app called Maluuba. If you haven't tried it out, check it out. It's an amazing Google Now substitute. Anyway, I would like it to be the app that comes up when I either long press(currently voice search) or press the search key(currently Google search). How do I go about doing that?

Removing Vlingo Voice Talk

Man, this thing is so annoying. I have a habit of double-tapping the home button to get to my desktop and I suppose the new function goes to Voice Talk. I don't want it to go there and I can't remove/remap it. Any clue on how to get rid of it?
yah thats in settings, go to motions in settings and uncheck double tap! that should fix it
You'll have to wait till our phones get rooted to completely remove any stock apps.

That does not fix it for me, I have all motion turned off, and still get the vlingo terms of service when I double tap home. Which I then decline every time. Very Annoying.
Same issue here. I want it to behave like Sense and display all of my homescreens (zoomed out). What does the 'home' key have to do with Voice Talk and Vlingo anyway?!
What would u like to do ???
Lol cant get it off either
Tmo Galaxy S2
Damn near a deal breaker
I like the plain voice commands from android and I'd like to do what I've been doing for the last couple of years - push the headset button, say what I want and have it just happen. I'm going to play with this a while longer but I'm going to give the phone back if it doesn't work exactly like I want. It's too much money to live with like I did the Vibrant - till the guys here made it work.
I don't mind something being no removable if there's an option to use something else. If any of you know how to change the settings so the original vlingo by Samsung isn't the automatic choice, that would be greatly appreciated.
Yep checked off double tap and it still goes into voice talk

UNinstall voice command-voice talk- voice search using titanium backup if rooted. if not rooted- see previous posts.
I prefer the vlingo app from market(which needs voice search app, also available in market).

It's been gone since the first update from when the phone was released... I don't know exactly which update, but I noticed it being gone after an OTA.
One easy way if your running ICS is to install go Launcher, open app drawer, long press voice command icon, un install, Vlingo gone! Un install go Launcher. No rooting required.
HOLY SHII
This solution that GDF01 is talking about, is not only very easy, but also very awesome! I removed Voice talk and Chat and other stuff, and i ICS-froze Readers Hub and all that stuff, so now I have a fully functional and great phone, without rooting or anything! Thanks!!

Google Now working on T Mobile GS3

Full credit goes to author of the below thread. Got Google Now working 99% on my stock rooted Tmobile GS3. What is the 1% not working? Once you launch the app if you dont perform any search, back button does not exit the app. So need to close it from task manager. Also sometimes after you enter the search text, enter key does not initaite the search, so hit menu -> refresh. Other than that the cards, talk back, quick and accurate response, voice search etc works just fine.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1747224
Try to reinstall it beacuse on my device I am able to exit Google Now with the back button. I am rooted running FreeGSM R5, Faux Kernel and High Def In Color theme.
i'm guessing we're ARMv7? and which of the 5 apk's did you use?

so even if we already have an older version of Google Now, same steps? it'll overwrite the old one, right?

y sir, atleast with me it did.
Do the cards take a while to show up because I've had it installed for a few hours but still don't get the weather card. I'm using the mikey m6. Everything else works.
t-mobile sgs3 stock rom/rooted
Stupid question but have you asked for the weather ? Because that was the first thing I asked and started getting cards. Also when in the app hit menu and go into settings I beleive that there are more options.
I have been using it for the last 2 days and it's such a gimmick. It doesn't give me the cards that I am expecting and need and most of the time I do a voice search instead of a card I get thrown to Google even tho I have a card set up for let's say my favorite sport team. Kind of wack.

How do I remove it? Google Now is one of those products that's probably gonna follow Google listen etc after a few years...
See u guys are getting the wrong impression of google now it does not work right with stock roms and has a phony voice. It was awesome on my gnex and was super quick and cards showed up when i needed. It finally is working great on cm 10 ....p.s. the inverted google now looks sick
Google Now will keep me from flashing to JB if the only thing that I can do with the double tap home function brings up Voice Dialer instead of Voice Search. Only fix is deleting the entire Google Search apk, which nullifies any benefit Google Now brought to the table. Sad, I actually liked the app...
Anyone having issues?
Hey guys. I was able to put Google now on my rooted SGH-T999 and it works wonderfully. I'm running CM9 and I can't wait to see what this can do. I was experiencing one issue though. Sometimes, after I search, I will click on one of the websites it shows me and the link won't open. Is anyone else experiencing this problem? Or any other issues with Google Now? Thanks guys!
The only issue i have is that if your launch Google now and don't search anything, pressing the back button won't exit the app. Need to use menu > refresh. Not a big annoyance since most times the app is used to search something. I wish location services would work just using gps, but you need to enable cellular triangulation too for that. I feel like triangulation will drain battery unnecessarily.

They have fixed that issue, I am using reekotub's v3 of Google now, and it works almost perfectly. They have also made a fix where voice search can be mapped to double tapping the home key!

Any luck with Google Now?

Has anyone had any luck installing Google Now via these instructions? Or a similar way? I've got the stock ROM and rooted. I installed the Online/Offline ReekoTubbs version via recovery mode and set the proper permissions. I'm just not seeing Google Now at all. No idea how to start it or whether it's even installed. My SGS3 looks just like it did prior to installing GN.
Thanks.
I've not installed it this way as I am running a JB rom, but try opening your Google App. There is no special icon, etc. for it. Your Google app should become Google Now (but icon, name, etc. remain just Google).

Has anyone else figured out a way to get Google now to work with double tapping the home button like with S-Voice?

Not sure how'd this would work on the stock ROM. You'd have to find a mod that allowed it, if such a thing exists.
I'm running CM10 and I've set long-press on the menu button to app switcher and long-press on the home button to be Google Now. Quite liking the setup.
The Google app kinda works like Google Now but it is like a stripped down version of it. Google Now is way better..

I am using stock ICS, so I don't know if this will apply, but I hated svoice, and used this as a solution...
I installed apex launcher, and assigned the home button to launch google voice search/actions.
In svoice: settings>launch s voice(uncheck)
In apex: settings>behavior settings>homekey action>launch shortcut this i directed to a shortcut to launch google voice search.
Next, in apex: settings>behavior settings> homekey to default screen(checked)
The behavior that this causes is: when on home screen, and I press home button, h google voice search loads. If I am not on home screen, home button brings me there. So, from any where on phone, google voice search is accessible by two presses of home button. First takes me home, second loads voice search.

I'm a leach
I am using CM10 KANK (8/25). I can start Google now search but when I tried to use the same test sentences i.e. "what´s the weather?" my Google now search shows me a google result instead of showing me the weather pop-up as shown in those many video. What do I make wrong?

Search Press and Hold Menu

Hey everyone I tried doing some searching but these words are pretty common so I couldn't find much.
The problem is that I know that by pressing and holding the menu button I get to the search function but the problem is that it doesn't give me the launch menu like it did on my S2 t989 for example when I held the search key on my S2 t989 a "which app would you like to do this in" menu would come up that would give me direct access to apps like shazam, soundhound, and screencast. Is that feature completely gone or do I have to enable a setting or something for this? I really loved having that menu there.
Also another question about the search function that does come up. It does not seem to be the same full search function from before but only for the web. I used to be able to search the apps that are actually on my phone and launch them through that menu as well. Is that possible anymore or has that been disabled too?
Don't get me wrong I LOVE this phone so much I just miss those couple little things. Thanks!
Thank crapple for the change in search function. If you are rooted go to /system/app and find GoogleQuickSearchBox_USA.apk. renameto remove the __USA part.
Dont know bout the other. Sorry.

Thanks for the quick reply and help. I am rooted and I am actually running FreeGS3 and in my /system/app folder there is only "GoogleQuickSearchBox.apk" there isn't one with "_USA" on it.

At some point whatever action you're trying to do you probably checked the "use as default" box and now you don't get the choice. I still get to choose which app I use for most things, not sure how to go back and remove the default though.

you can do it throught Google Gow. just go into Google Now>settings>phone search> and select what you want it to search.
I just loaded a custom ROM but when it asked what app to use it gave me this popup.
Clear default app settings by going to Settings>Applications manager>All

[Q] Any way to "OK, Google" from any screen but Google Now?

I don't get the point of having the "OK, Google" if I can't use it on any screen except when I actually open Google Now. I was hugely let down by the lack of "always listening" but what is the point of having this if I need to open up a specific program just to set an alarm with my voice?
How do I "OK, Google. Set an alarm for 30 minutes" without actually opening up the god damn Google Now?
I am so disappointed in this lack of feature or my lack of knowledge.

Anyway see my thanks meter compared to yours before you bash for not helping the XDA community. Bye now....
Anyways, I had to put that guy above on the ignore list for both wasting this threads time and just being rude.
If you hold the home button, then swipe up it launches Google Now, so that will be how I access it until active listening from the home screen when the phone is on is one day enable or someone does an extension.
Thanks to anyone but the guy I had to block.

Do a google search for the apk. You should be able to side load it.
You can then use ok google on the home screens, but still nowhere else.
You can download the Google now Launcher (googlehome.apk) from numerous threads here on xda, any gapps zip download for aosp, and many places on the internet. That's the only way to do it and you won't get BlinkFeed either :/ otherwise gotta deal with the home buttoness

As far as I'm aware, it could only be done with certain apps (like the mic+ app linked in the above post) or from installing the Google Now launcher. That means you won't be able to run Sense though so if you really want to carry on using Sense you'll need to use one of the aforementioned apps instead.
It's a shame that HTC didn't implement such a feature to be honest, especially considering they made it possible to use Ok Google commands once on the Google Now app. I guess it's officially limited to certain Nexus devices though.

Thank you for this. I tried installing it and messing with it in many ways, but it only recognizes my "Okay, Google" about 10% of the time (I tried both engines) and even when it does recognize my "Okay, Google" from a home screen it takes about 5-10 seconds for it to launch, thus by the time it launches I have either thought it failed since it took so long or I said "Okay, Google" 3 times already by the time it launches.
Thank you anyways, it just doesn’t work well with this phone maybe. Pretty disappointing since the processor it has is able to do always listening or at least home screen listening.
