Noob Needs help - T-Mobile, Samsung Galaxy SIII

Hey all, I was trying to ask on the related threads in the dev section, but due to my post count, it won't let me.
I have a few questions that hopefully you guys will be able to help me with.
I have a rooted S3, still on T999UVALEM. I can't do the T-mobile OTA updates since it always fails, due to the root I'm assuming. I keep getting the annoying firmware update notifications and simply can't update.
I was considering loading a custom rom, but for some reason, CWM won't work anymore. I know how to flash with odin since it's easy, but I have no idea how to use ADB.
I tried reflashing CWM serveral times, multiple versions, including the latest, and I simply can't boot into recovery mode. I hold volume up + power + home, and I'll see the blue text at the top left, but after that it loads the Samsung Galaxy logo for a few seconds and goes blank. Eventually it will reboot if I keep holding the buttons, or if I let go, it will reboot again, but I can't get into CWM anymore. Anyone have a similar issue, or know how I can fix this?

Have you tried booting into recovery from ROM manager?

Try goomanager in the playstore and install TWRP instead and see if it works. It should if you are rooted.

Just did it that way, it works. Strange how I can't do it with the button combo...

More than likely you aren't doing the button combo right. You have to let off the power button after the phone vibrates when it switches back on, but continue to hold the home key and volume up key. Glad ROM manager worked for you, it's a great tool; I have had it on my last 4 phones haha

The correct way to do it (and yes I knew he was doing it wrong that's why I suggested ROM manager) is to hold all the buttons ONLY until you see that little blue writing appear at the top of your screen then IMMEDIATELY release all three buttons. Works every time, guaranteed.

And just to clarify when the above poster says all the buttons, he means Vol+, Home, and Power.

Thanks for your help guys. I got everything running the way I wanted it to. Only thing now is finding a ROM that has decent battery life.
With the old stock ICS rom, I could get 30 hours with light to moderate use. Now I'm getting 12hrs or so with Frosty, even less with M2, so I reverted back to M1/R7.

Check out Leankernel. It's supposed to be optimized to give maximum battery life.
CM10 based ROMs have pretty decent battery life for me. I get 16-19 hours of battery per day with screen on time between 3-5 hours running a 1.9Ghz overclock. Can't ask for much more. If you keep your CPU clock at 1.5Ghz on Leankernel with CM10, I don't see 24 hours of on time with several hours of screen on being a problem.

Nice. The only thing is that I like TouchWiz and would like to keep it. The Frosty ROM uses it so its a plus. Would I be able to run leankernel on this ROM?

the problem that i am facing is, if i dont let go of the power button only, the blue writing wont show.

Unfortunately not. Leankernel was built specifically for CM10/AOSP ROMs. I'm sure there's a stock based kernel that comes undervolted which will help greatly with battery life.

Sensitive power button

My samsung galaxy s2 has sensitive power button for some reason. I'm not sure if its the roms i have been flashing. But im on IML74K_Ics_Perfection_UCLD2 and if the slightest touch on the power button turn on my phone when it is off. Or it can turn it when the phone is locked. But i can even press it all the way down for even a split second without it rebooting and going into a bootloop and taking me many tries to actually boot up. Is this a hardware problem with my phone should i restore my phone to stock and return back to tmobile or is this a ics problem with the roms?

Have you tried using any different roms? Is the issue still present? I haven't had or read about this issue before, and I've tried my fair share of roms.
I have tried the darkside roms but im starting to think its the phone and i think is should get it replaced then.
Yeah it shouldn't be so sensative.

i just started experiencing this last night. RIGHT after getting my battery replaced after two weeks of dealing with that problem and finally realizing it was my battery and not my phone. then i tried to take a screenshot of my new battery stats (without all of the huge sudden depletions) and my phone reset as if i held the power button down for 5 seconds. i read about a woman in india getting her button repaired for 550 rupees ($10), but i'm wondering if i should just get a whole new unit and be done with it. the problem with that is dealing with setting up all my apps over again. i have titanium backup (root version) but the last time i got a new phone it didn't put all my apps back on my phone. maybe i did something wrong. i'll email them for detailed instructions and see if it's better to get the button or the phone replaced.
Definitely the power button! After I hardbricked and revived it, my phone had an internal short, which made my phone constantly power off my phone, restart my phone over and over, etc. Josh at mobiletechvideos had to try and work around. He disabled my power button and remapped the wake buttons. So now I wake this phone via the volume rockers on roms that support that
I digress. If you can't send it to T-Mobile to get repaired, give mobile tech videos a shot. Just 35$ and they're super swift

I wonder what's actually causing this power button thing??
I was literally just browsing email, clicking around a little fast, back to home screen and FLASH!!! my camera flashes and all this same $hit starts happening...boot loop, sensitive button, booting out of recovery mode even. I just doesn't add up to sudden button failure...does it??? Why would the camera just flash out of nowhere? Some of the boot loops would also get interrupted and start over. Recovery mode is also kind of screwy. I tried to restore to a backup of Beastmade rom and it just reflashed Sith, the same rom I've been on!! And all my other backups/nandroids are missing. Something is fishy here.
I did recently go to TWRP and have been on the Sith Rom (clones & drones).
Yep its the power button ! I had this problem a month ago , but for me it completely went away .. maybe something was just stuck in between and the constant pressing of the button loosened whatever it was

The thing that has me curious is how mine started acting up. I wasn't even touching the power button. I was just clicking around gmail, went to home screen, the camera flashed and it started boot looping. It would sort of zap out in the middle of a reboot like there was a power issue and lot of other stuff was messed up including TWRP recovery! This tells me there is something else going on...more ROM related. Seems like all this started happening when these ICS ROMS dropped...none of them are as stable as Juggernaut, Paradox, etc...NONE of them. My power button does indeed seem defective, but it almost seems like it was a bi product of something else.

ROM related. No. Its a faulty power button. Been many threads describing your situation. Ends up being a faulty power button. Mobiletech offers a power button service. Its reasonably priced.

I was lucky enough to get flashed back to stock and have a warranty replacement on the way. Still has me wondering if something else wasn't up. Just seems like all the ICS based ROMs have been very buggy compared to the very stable Gingerbread builds. I sure enjoyed my rooted phone but this has been a PITA losing my device...it's my work and life! I haven't been stock in so long it will be interesting to click around a bit and see if I'm not better off stock. I'm due for an upgrade next month so I may well be on to an S3 or whatever else is out.
Just got my replacement this afternoon!!! Man...what a couple of days it's been without it! Holy crap, I had no idea.
Anyway the new phone shipped with 4.04. So that's cool. So far THIS is the most stable ICS rom I've used. :silly:
I know this post is ancient, but ....
Two years later, I'm experiencing this power button problem and I'm on KitKat - SlimKat 7.0 stable.

Dah... just went locally to have it serviced... got screwed at 100$...
Should have searched online before...
I had the SAME EXACT issue. I had to literally remove my power button because my device would reboot every few minutes. I use the volume keys to wake the device and sleep shortcut in the notification bar to sleep. If my device turns off, I have to turn it on with a USB, which is a major hassle but I've grown used to it.

[Q] Energy ROM Battery Question

First, I'd like to thank the DEV for the Energy ROM. I've run the last two releases and it is truly spectacular. The latest version with Hashcode's Kernel makes it a completely functional daily user (not that the SOD's in the last one made it any less amazing). I understand the battery issues associated with it, and have read through the workarounds in the DEV forum, but this issue seems to be beyond those. On any given day, I leave the house for work with a full charge and, even if I'm not able to use it during the day, I get home and am hovering around the 50% level. Not a big deal, but the last two days I've taken it a step further and did a hard power off before I left (held power for the 20s). When I got back 10 hours later and tried to power it back on, it was completely dead. First day I thought, just a fluke, maybe the power button got bumped accidentally. But two days in a row, while the KF was secured in a hard case, got me concerned. Is anyone else running into this sort of issue? This is by far the best ROM i've run on the KF, and tomorrow I won't bother to shut it down, but I'm curious as to what could be the cause. I'm running at the standard 1200/600 clock speed, but with it shut down, to my understanding I shouldn't see any significant battery loss, right? I'm definitely a noob when it comes to android, so if this is an issue easily remedied, I apologize up front. Thanks in advance for any help offered, and thanks again to all that made this ROM possible!
It's a known issue for older kernels (not sure about the latest one) that if you force the shutdown, it may sometimes turn on at random a while later - this is probably what happened, it turned on a while after you left it off, and then just ate through the battery during the day until you got back home.
If you have flashed the latest kernel, using the "normal" Shutdown option should work (not sure if the ROM would need to be updated or not) fine, so far I've never had it turn back on after using it, but I'm using Hashcode's ROM instead.
Otherwise, just reboot into TWRP and press "Reboot" - "Power Off", which will make it stay off... hopefully.
Thanks, I'll give it a try through TWRP and see what happens. FYI I'm running release #8 of the 3.0 kernel if that sheds any light on the problem

It'd be for the best if, at the very least, you flash kernel #10, as it allows for "normal" shutdown (ie, no need to go through TWRP or to force the shutdown by holding the power button 10-20s), though I'd recommend switching to Hashcode's ROM (better support, plus a few more ROM only features) instead, at least until everything slows down a bit.
Thanks for the advice. I'll take a look at his ROM as well. I thought about just flashing the #10 kernel, but i understand you lose some of the functionality of the kernel since the ROM isn't designed to take full advantage of it.

[Q] Rooted phone and now wont turn on

I recently Rooted my sealed samsung galaxy s3 without having a clue what i'm doing i downloaded this program called snapdragon to root it along with ODIN. The phone rooted fine everything was working okay, I even downloaded an app to see if the root was successful and indeed it was. I shut the phone down wake up in the morning to turn it back on and I get zero response. Any help/direction would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks!
Might seem obvious, but have you tried leaving it plugged in for ten-fifteen minutes?

Yes of course I've tried leaving it plugged in for several hours and the night before the phone was at 100% charge so I doubt battery is the issue.
Tks though

Ummm seems like u can fix it.... go bak to stock using odin as well and go back to stock and i believe cwm is going to be gone so as your root access so re-do it but this time guide yourself through a turorial(a.k.a google) and since you have to clue i think the best choice for you is to find a video tutorial in case your doubting or getting confused with the steps or sometimes to see what you did wrong that caused the phone to misbehave...

This is why I hate one-click-root kits, you get people doing things to their phones they don't understand, wreck it and come here saying "help, I don't know what do do!" Something like this you really should at least understand the basics. I hope this gets you more involved in researching what's actually happening. It's important to know what's happening to your device as well as why, that way if something goes badly you'll have an idea of how to get out of it.
Sorry, enough lecturing, let's see if we can get something going here. Give a bit more detail about what happens. You're phone is shut down, right? You hit the power button and no response, like the battery is actually out of the phone, or does it turn on and give you a blank screen? If it was a brick, I'd think you'd at least see the boot screen before everything goes wrong.
Ok, I'm going to go ahead and assume you've removed the battery. If you haven't, do so now.
If it still won't turn on, try actually holding the power button down for 30-60 seconds. I had a scary moment with my phone yesterday, rebooted it running Wicked v5 on Trinity and the screen just died. I've been running that rom for a week with just a couple of issues here and there, nothing out of the ordinary. Pulled the battery and tried again, nothing. After holding the power button down for a bit I felt a quick vibrate, then the boot logo came up. No idea why, I'm going to have to look into it.
Beyond that, I'm brand new to this phone and Sammy's Android devices so I'm still learning myself. HTC phones I could help out more with, but I'm still a bit clueless with this thing.

Yes I have taken out the battery replaced it several times. I hit the volume home and power button several times. When I do that I get a zero response nothing shows up I hear no sound its as if the phone is just completely dead. One thing I did realise is when I plug it into the computer and press the power button what would happen is it would connect and automatically disconnect
Can you get into Download mode? Volume down + Home + Power button?

Don't forget to let go of the power button when going into recovery.
Have you done what the other post said?
Hold power for about 10-30 seconds. Does it do anything? Do you feel a verrrry slight vibration?
When you plug it in without doing anything else does the computer see it in device manager? How about if you press power once? Or holding power down?
Does it register that its charging?
This may sound dumb but did you try powering up without the phone plugged into anything?

Ummm. Sorry but maybe im missing something? Your first sentence in your op says you didnt have a clue what you were doing....
And where is it supposed to infer that you've done everything already?
Imo you have been getting 'real' advice but from what I see you haven't 'really' answered anyones suggestions.
No one can help you if you dont tell us what exactly you have tried and what what happened when you did.
For example in your only response you mentioned hitting the volume and home keys a bunch of times....what exactly do you mean by this? Did you hold them while trying to power up? Volume up or down? Did you release any of them during that process, and if so which and when?
Its kinda hard to help someone who doesn't have a clue what they are doing and only responds that hes done everything common sense dictates.
I seriously mean no offence but to me common sense would dictate that you not try rooting or anything if you know you dont know what you're doing.
It would also dictate that if you want further help with this you should go back and respond to what everyone suggested.
Like I said, im not trying to offend, just help.

I am having the same issue
I just tried flashing Android Revolution to my phone. I went through the whole set up process. Went to reboot then it went blank. Nothing. I get nothing when I plug it in. The computer doesn't recognize any device attached to it. I've tried all the ideas listed here and I get nothing. It's as if the phone is completely dead. When I flashed the rom my battery was at 90%. I've used various roms on different phones and this was the first time I did it to my Galaxy s3 and this is the first time it's ever happened. Talk about frustrating.

[Q] dead phone after Jiedi Master 16 ROM flash

Hi All,
I tried to flash Jedi Master 16 ROM http://forum.xda-developers.com/show....php?t=1958230 to my ATT unlocked E980 LGGP for T-Mobile. Now the phone is dead, i.e. not responding to anything. Please please help.
Rooting and installing recovering image, Optimus G Pro How to get ClockworkMod CWM and make a backup | LG Optimus Forums - Android Optimus Forums
were successful. Flashed the stock Jedi Master 16 ROM (no change to the zip) all seemed fine till the installer prompt me to reboot with successful installation message displayed. After confirming rebooting, the phone is no longer responsive. Battery is fully charged before I left it alone over night (~6hrs). Battery still had full voltage in the morning. Battery pulled/reinserted a couple times, volume down+home+power pressed many times. Phone still does not respond at all. Connected to the computer, and the computer said the device driver installation failed.
Searched everywhere and found mentioned "deep sleep" symptom. However, battery was not drained. The so called "bricked" seems to referring to looping in booting. Mine is simple not responding to anything at all with or without battery in, with or without wall charger connected, no matter what key/keys pressed.
I suspect that I should have put the right modem file into the Jedi Master 16 zip file.
Please help and thank you in advance.
I'm not even sure what to say.. Why the hell would you install a Samsung Note 2 ROM on your E980???
Can you at least get into recovery mode?
Pull battery then put back in
Hold vol-up+power+home until it passes the lg logo and goes black then release.
Are you in clockworkmod recovery?
My bad. Thought Jedi X is Note 2 specific and Jedi Master is somewhat generic.
Phone won't even boot. Screen is off, and no LED lights/sign of life anywhere with the battery trick and vol-up/down + power + home trick.
When the battery pulled and USB powered, the back and menu led flashed (white) once. Then no more sign of life no matter what key(s) + power buttons combo press.

The only forum you flash roms out of is this one and it must be for the E980. Your only hope is to try and flash back to stock
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2302660
if that works and you're back on stock then root and after that you have to use FreeGee to install a loki recovery..i suggest the cwm one. just make sure to select unlock security etc
good luck

I understand what I should do after the phone boots up. Thank a lot for the resources.
However, I am stuck with how to make the phone boot. Is there a hardware reset button?
Methods tried so far:
1. Pull and reinsert battery, then press power button.
2. Pull and reinsert battery, then press (vol-up/down) + (camera shutter) + (home) + (power button).
3. Left the phone alone for 6hr (no USB charging). Battery is at full voltage (4.12v). Then following step 1 or 2.

Dude you need to simply do this. Pull battery, put battery back in, hook to computer and while plugging in the cable to your phone, hold volume up and down. If you see the 'download mode' box in the middle of the screen, YOURE SAVED, IF NOT THEN YOURE ****ED!
Never flash anything unless you know what you're doing. I seriously advise you to do a serious amount of reading before ampting any flashing if anything!

Points are well taken! I was in a rush which I definitely did not have to.
Tried the vol-up+down combo tip. No response. I guess I need to resort to some JTAG repair.
Thanks a lot.

It's volume down and power button, hold it simultaneously for about 10-15 seconds.

Methinks the former. The OP took a "parts is parts" approach to Android and made an expensive mistake.
Unbricked
My phone is finally unbricked using JTAG thanks to this man!

Everything is bright and shine except the partition table is screwed up where all apps (like camera app) see there is no space in the internal sd card. Waiting on the external micro sd card to arrive. Hopefully that will make the phone usable (beyond just browsing and installing apps).
In this stage, I can't even root it since the rooter can't write onto the internal memory space. And Android Partition Manager Pro, who requires the phone to be rooted at first, won't help either.
Does any one know how to repartition without rooting? Thanks a lot.

[Q] My TMO S3 (T-999) will not turn on.

I didn't have luck finding an answer to this on the forums so I figured I'd make a new post. I have been running a version (not sure which) of Liquid Smooth for a few months. Yesterday, I noticed my phone was on a boot loop. It would vibrate, show the Samsung Galaxy S3 screen and then turn off. I pulled the battery and memory card and tried again. It still wouldn't come on. I pulled the battery and then rebooted to recovery mode. I went there to wipe and reboot. When I tried to do that it said something like, "what you are looking for can't be found". I pulled the battery again but this time when I tried to turn it back on it did nothing. I have no vibrations, I have nothing on my screen. I'm not sure what could have happened because I haven't made a change to my phone for quite some time. Any ideas?

Battery is going bad or the hardware is going bad.
What recovery and version?
Have you tried booting into recovery or download mode?
Take battery out and put back in:
Recovery: volume up, home button, power
Download mode: volume down, home button and power

I'm not able to get the phone to come on so I don't know the versions of anything I've used. All I know is my phone is the T-999. Sorry, I know that's probably no help at all.
You don't have a spare battery do you? If not, you should see if you can find someone you know that has one. It could be that you battery just went bad.

I tried all of this but did not have any luck. The phone doesn't do anything. It doesn't make any sense how it can just stop working out of nowhere like this. Wouldn't it mess up immediately after I rooted/added a custom ROM if I did something wrong rather than a few months later? I'm afraid that the phone may be done for. : (

I hate to say it, but usually when something like this happens it's most likely to be hardware related. If you don't have access to a spare, go to a T-Mobile store and ask to borrow a battery to see if it'll power up with a known good one. Batteries usually don't just die like that, but it can happen.
So you don't get a short vibe or anything out of it? What about when you hold the power button for about 10seconds? If you remove the battery and plug it in, do you get an led lit up? How about with the battery in?
If the battery turns out to be good, you could attempt the debrick method by KAsp3rd stickies in development. I don't see why it would be a brick, but at this point I'd try anything available just to be positive.
If you have insurance on it, it may be time to consider using it.
Sorry to hear this is happening to you man. These S3's are starting to get a little old though, and no matter how careful we are, they do suffer more abuse than any other electronics we may use. I'm seeing more and more posts like yours recently, I'm sorry to say.
Keep us updated on it, and good luck with it!
