This phone - galaxy nexus - Samsung Galaxy Nexus

I'm looking into getting this phone with VERIZON and just wanted to read some inputs of what you guys & girls think of your Galaxy Nexus 4G?
I'm currently rocking a HTC Evo 4G with Sprint but no 4G due to location (Miami) and I have 4 more days to decide if I should stay with Sprint or go to Verizon due to lack of Internet Services.
So yea, I'm a big fan of GREAT Camera phones. I see the Nexus only have a 5MP sensor. Does it compare or beats the iPhone 4S camera?
But I'm really digging Jelly Bean!
So let me know what ya think?
Should I rock the Galaxy Nexus if I leave Sprint..

It doesn't matter about the megapixel its all about the Lens and the glasses I mean the camera Hardware itself

That's why I said "Sensor" 5MP Sensor could perform better then other 8MP Sensor.
It can all depends on the (Aperture) of the "Glass"
So if the Sensor kicks low performance, the GLASS can make it pop. But not the other way around.
Thanks

The GNex camera is fine, everyone complains about it but unless you're trying to be a camera pro, its just fine.

I left sprint for Verizon just a couple of months ago. Left because of the same reason, my part of Ohio won't have 4g for an unforeseen amount if time. Couldn't be happier now though. the difference between my service is amazing. 3g and 4g is like night and day. Bottom line is I get better data speeds on 3g with Verizon then I ever did on sprints 3g. Unlimited data is great if you can use it, but I couldn't use Pandora, play music, or even watch a 3 min. YouTube video on sprints network with where I am, and there current levels of service.

That's good to know about the service & camera! Thanks...Any good or bad issues with the Galaxy Nexus?

May want to research battery life and screen issues.
Although battery life is very subjective, overall it seems as though people are having issues with it. There are extended batteries that can help with this issue so I would look into that as well.
There are problems with the Nexus screen ranging from banding to yellowish tints. Some people have exchanged phones multiple times and still have had screen issues, so this is one aspect I would definitely research thoroughly before buying.

I just ordered the phone so I can't comment on that, but as for service it seems anything is better than Sprint for data speed. I'm running far away from Sprint (and contracts in general). If I were to sign a contract I'd prob get the GS3... not sure if VZW has it.

Yea my family was in the same boat, and i had the epic 4g slider, the other sprint flagship phone . Speeds are great and i think you EVO is long over due for an upgrade plus, no annoying bootloader during root, ( I rooted my moms Evo)

Had pretty much the same scenario. 2 Evo 4G and ridiculous coverage. We both switched over to Verizon and a GNex. I wouldn't hesitate to call it an upgrade in every way. The camera has a lower mega pixel, but it takes better pictures, especially in low light conditions. The battery life is better in the overall, but that may be related to better signal strength. Nicer display on the Nexus and it's definitely snappier. Verizon LTE is leaps and bounds beyond Sprint's 3G coverage. I would definitely give the Nexus a shot.

Hey, thanks for the info...Do you know of a link that I can see the differences between the two. Galaxy Nexus & Evo 4G?
How much snappier can it be from the EVO. This Evo is pretty bad azz when it comes to performance and picture quality.
I would love to see the difference in photo quality & performance!
HTC Evo 4G has a lens aperture of 2.2.
I wonder what the Galaxy Nexus has?
They both run 1.2 dual-core processors with 1gb of ram?

something about the camera since you asked how it compared to the iphone 4/s camera.
at dave n busters i could take pictures with the flash off and they were fine, and with the flash they weren't washed out or blurry.
the iphone needed the flash otherwise it was all dark, and almost all the photos were blurry or washed in flash.
and then that fast shutter speed on the nexus, i can snap a quick shot faster than the iphone (multiple shots in a row, and a few other things are when this is most useful)

I used an iPhone 4 before I moved to a Gnex. And, I still kind of prefer the image quality from my iPhone 4.
To me, it just seems as though the Gnex isn't quite able to capture all of the detail; its just slightly a bit more blurry. This is when you zoom in in your picture (i.e. after I've taken the picture).
The camera lens was changed with the iPhone 4S so I would think there's an improvement even over the iPhone 4.
That said, the picture quality from a Gnex isn't terrible but it could be a lot better. Hopefully, it's something that's changed with the next gen.

Thanks for the replies! The reason I asked compared to the iPhones is because in fact I came from the iPhone family and know the quality of both the iPhone 4 and 4S. My girl currently owns the 4S. I have done the comparison between my current phone HTC EVO 4G LTE. There is no dought that the EVO 4G LTE takes the leap over the iPhone's.
I wanted the input of the Galaxy Nexus 4G cause I don't know how it stacked up next to the iPhones. I had a feeling one of you was going to say that the details on the iPhone 4 pictures is just peppier more then the Galaxy Nexus 4G LTE .
And knowing this makes me assure that it will not be as crispy as the iPhone 4S.
But yea thanks for the input on the camera of the Galaxy Nexus 4G LTE.

If the question is specifically about comparing cameras, the 4S has a better camera than my GNex, but my GNex takes pretty good pics. It may not be stellar but it's good enough for my purposes.

Cool, Thanks! The moral of my question is how does the Galaxy Nexus 4G LTE stacks up to the Evo 4G LTE in general? Would it be worth to "downgrade" sorta say?

Display compared to galaxy nexus

How does the display on this compare to the galaxy nexus? Can the human eye tell a difference? I'm really tempted by the high pixel density! So will our display be good for future apps or will most of them be made for 720 p displays?
Sent from my SPH-D710 using XDA Premium App
You can tell the pixel density compared to the evo3d from the ET4g, it depends on your preference. Side by side specs the resolution is the only advantage the GNex has over our phones.

As far as Screens go, the differences between the two are:
Galaxy Nexus uses a Super AMOLED HD screen. This is the same technology used in the original Galaxy S line but with a higher resolution. With that said, the stated resolution for the Galaxy S screens were 480x800, however tests have shown that the actual perceived resolution is more like 392x653.
This is because Super AMOLED uses an inferior subpixel arrangement called PenTile. which uses green sub-pixels as a base, and then alternates between blue and red ones, which makes the arrangement RG-BG.
The Galaxy S II uses a Super AMOLED Plus display that has a far superior sub-pixel arrangement. Samsung calls it Real Stripe, but in fact it is basically just a normal RGB arrangement, but results in 50% more sub-pixels per one dot of screen estate. The results are a much more crisp and clear image.
In terms of performance, the Galaxy S II has a superior processor, and graphics processor. Galaxy Nexus uses the same exact GPU as the Nexus S (and the original Galaxy S line.)
I like my E4GT but if I could do it over, I would have waited a few months and seen what came down the pipeline.
I picked up my E4GT in December as a replacement to my HTC EVO 4G and honestly, I can't really see THAT much difference. I mean the screen is nicer, it's faster, but I don't use my Android for mobile media devices. I use them to make calls, texts, as an alarm clock and as a portable hotspot for work or pleasure when I can't get access to WiFi.
Honestly the speeds on my EVO 4G were WAY better then on my Epic 4G Touch when on 3G.
I was would normally see a meg or so down, I'm lucky to see 100kbps on 3G now.
I do not pay for my phone so I've not complained much yet but I'm seriously considering paying the ETF and moving to ATT or something faster. What is the point of unlimited data if I can't use it? I remember thinking oh, I gotta be on Sprint because 4G will be so fast and unlimited blah blah blah. We actually HAVE 4G in my city and I'm like a mile too far away to use it and everything I do that has me mobile is the opposite direction of the 4G towers.
I'd rather have faster 3G at this point. I just haven't decided WHAT phone I want yet or with what carrier. I keep holding out that Sprints 3G will get better and I kept holding out for more 4G coverage, hence upgrading to the E4GT, guess I screwed up there.

Try a PRL hack, you'll probably get better 3g speeds and possibly kicked off with no etf, either way you win.

It's a Nexus.
Plus im sitting on 4 upgrades and my Epics screen has a few scratches on it :/
I could swear this has been posted before....maybe its deja vu

Not me, since we probably won't see lte here before the next ice age it isn't a factor in my phone choice. I like the overall size of the E4GT, learned the hard way going from EVO 4G to EVO 3D that longer/narrower isn't better for the way the phone feels in your hand.
No doubt e4gt is better phone but unlimited lte speed I am up for it.

Sprint's LTE is going to suck atleast at first IMO
Have you seen Verizons coverage ?
they have LTE everywhere !
>_<
Yes this may be sprints first LTE phone how many cities have sprint LTE. If you want 4g might be better holding off until late this year/early next for better LTE support and stick with WiMax for now.
Also as other have said the epic touch is a better phone. Better rear camera, faster processor, better gpu, battery lasts longer on WiMax vs. LTE. The only advantages of the galaxy nexus is slightly larger screen (at that size could be a con), LTE support, and better custom rom support.
So overall I would say the epic touch is a nicer phone.
Why would lte suck more than wimaxx? Lte running in lower frequency penetrates building much better than wiimax

Personally Im waiting for a samsung quad core, most likely the S3. I have found out through my many attemps to switch OEM's that I am a samsung fan, no matter what. But seriously, your talking about "upgrading" to a phone that has been out for 4-5 months by the time sprint releases it, and around that same time phones will be lauching with twice the processor, twice the camera, etc. Why waste your upgrade, or money?

have an upgrade now, but defiantly going to wait for 4 cores. Hopefully the next "Nexus" inst too far away. Im sure well have all the roms proper soon enough: MIUI, CM9, AOKP. There almost all ready as is.
Though I cant possibly Imagine what that much power is for in a phone considering our e4gt underclocked to 500mhz still runs like a dream.
E4GT all the way
Having had the Nexus S 4G and living with it's absolutely terrible speaker quality and generally weak volume (missed calls due to low volume and weak vibrate, using the speakers for YouTube or online videos was a waste of time) and terrible radio to boot, it's a wonder that it's the same Samsung that makes the NS4G and the Epic Touch.
The Epic Touch is night and day compared to the NS4G specifically in the areas of audio, speaker quality and volume.
Having prefaced with all that, i'm skeptical about the Galaxy Nexus as well. First off, the camera is not good, some VZW users have said. I have read some posts talking about low speaker quality, basically the speakers are not loud at all (same issue i found with the NS4G). At least Sprint's version is 32GB storage (negates whining about expansion slot a bit).
I'll have to play with it in person first before deciding. Epic Touch is plenty fine and functioning very well for me right now.

Galaxy Nexus or Evo LTE?

Hey XDA folks,
So now that we know that the Evo LTE is coming... are you guys making the switch to HTC or staying with Sammy on the Galaxy Nexus or the next SGS3?
I myself find myself leaning more towards the Galaxy Nexus but it HAS to be LTE, if not I am going with the Evo.
The Galaxy Nexus is an LTE phone, if that is what is the only thing that is making you indecisive.

Its not the only reason why, updates, better perfomance ( as reviewed by Phone Arena to the HTC One X)smoother software, expandable memory, no hardware buttons, development supoort, and its Google's baby.

To be honest, I've had HTC phones, and while they do work, they always have rather bad battery life.
EVO's got it's huge development team behind it (you wont be without something to flash) and it's going to be better as far as LTE connection due to it's ability to connect to the 800(900?) mhz band of Sprint's LTE.
The Gnex is probably going to be better with battery performance, despite it's battery size being only 1850, as compared to it's 2000 mAh competitor (EVO LTE). But since it's AOSP, it's not going to have a battery drain skin such as sense running.
The other thing to consider is that the gNex has been out for awhile, and we're late getting it. In 6-7 months from now, the next Nexus will be announced and we'll be stuck with our phones for 2 years (unless you've some way to get new phones for affordable prices).
I prefer stability over performance and such. I think the gNex screen is much better because it's Amoled, so I'd choose the gNex.
hope these helps you decide...

Well said!
As for waiting another 6-7 months for the next gen Nexus... it'll be longer. Simply put Sprint has never received first dibs on the nexus device. I say it'll be At&t who gets the next one first although I would love for all 4 carriers to get it at the same time.
As for being stuck for 2 years with the same phone..nah I dont beleieve in that, I always find a way to get the newest without paying full price ( Craigslist) or I just sell my phone and use that money towards a used but like new phone on there as well. Thats not the issue with me LoL.
I also am leaning towards the Nexus now simply because you made a great point, the fact that sense is still running will use more battery.
I'm going to jump ship to the Evo LTE simply because I'm an Evo fanboy. Love HTC sense. Only reason I got this phone is because of the bigger screen but now that they finally gave the Evo a bigger screen I'm going back.

See I'm not so sure I'm not a fan of the 16:9 screen ratio on phones. The evo 4g lte looks like the screen was stretched vertically and looks really narrow. Is 16:9 going to be the new standard? I love the width of my et4g and hope the gs3 is similar

UPDATE I just came back from the Verizon store ... I went to just see the Galaxy Nexus in person... and I was not impressed. It feels too much like my ET4G, and not that thats a bad thing. I am just ready for a change! I though maybe I would love it in person but I left there feeling my ET4G was a BETTER phone.
Come May 26th Hello Evo LTE!!
Neither, by the time Sprint LTE is a real working network there will be better options. I will probably be due for my upgrade by then. Also the Nexus isn't really an upgrade from S2 just a variation.
I'm not sure about that phonearena writeup...
Both Phil Nickinson and Myriam Joire are head over heels for the One X. They claim that the screen is nicer (by a landslide), the camera blows the Nexus one away (Not much of a stretch, my Epic Touch camera blows the Nexus camera away), and that Sense is very light and very nice.
Of course, there's the battery... that's the only thing holding me back from a full on geekgasm at this point over the HTC.
I'm going to wait until I can look at both of them side by side and make my own decision.

Neither, by the time Sprint LTE is a real working network there will be better options. I will probably be due for my upgrade by then. Also the Nexus isn't really an upgrade from S2 just a variation.

I think thats why I am going with th Evo
Android Central recently had an article about the HTC One X's battery life. While I know there are differences between both the One X and the EVO LTE, I believe it would be a good reference point. Although the One X doesn't have the LTE support yet in the states, those screen shots of the battery lasting 17+hours with as much as 22% left to go, has to get you a little bit excited. Especially because the One X has a smaller battery compared to the EVO LTE. Granted, whenever the LTE network is up and running in your area with you running it on the phone, the life will obviously go down. But still, I'm pretty excited about the possibilities.

See I'm not so sure I'm not a fan of the 16:9 screen ratio on phones. The evo 4g lte looks like the screen was stretched vertically and looks really narrow. Is 16:9 going to be the new standard? I love the width of my et4g and hope the gs3 is similar

Very good point. I loved the screen size on my evo 4g but the screen on the evo 3d was a downgrade ratio wise. The screen was sharper but I often made spelling errors because of the screen being more narrow. I'm hoping the bigger size makes up for that on the evo lte. I think it really comes down to what you like best. Stock ics and the latest os or sense and the great hardware. I go in to the evo lte knowing that I'm not going to get constant os updates but I'm OK with that because of the huge dev team behind the evo.

I hope so too! The first Evo got HUGE dev support compared to the Evo 3D, but then again this Evo One should outsell the 3D, not sure if it will beat the Original Evo.
I HATE Sense. But, Id still get the 4G LTE due to its MUCH better hardware. It'll just suck waiting on AOSP to hit the EVO, but it'll be worth it 2 years down the line.
The battery life arguement is invalid. You own a nexus. The updates are invalid. Google clearly hasn't cared about it like they used to.
I the nexus good...yes. absolutely. It will always be a fantastic phone. But the Evo lte will also be a great phone. The battery life can't get /be worse than a nexus...and if it releases w 4.0.3 or 4.0.4 of can't be worse on updates. Cdma nexus has had...1? Not hating. Just pointing out pure facts. The nexus is a great pure aosp phone. But there are also other great phones to consider if you are being locked into contracts

Thats because it is... Galaxy Nexus performance leaves something to be desired coming from this beastly exynos powered phone. I do love a lot of the features the Nexus has to offer though...

nexus this sunday?

got an email today...galaxy nexus is coming this sunday! along with the viper... im sure you've all heard about the hike in TEP prices as well for lte devices -___-
your late to the party. pre-orders are sold out. mines on the way and will arrive either today tomorrow or monday. (hitting refresh on ups tracking now)
just tracked, its in my city and out for delivery!
I don't understand the appeal of the GN. It has an inferior processor and camera.
I think its the aosp.. that and LTE.. I, myself am curious as to what the data speed is going to be like on sprint.. at&t's LTE in the Houston area is a monster..
With all that said... its a new toy.. ;-D

no buttons, pogo pins charging, first to get jellybean, nfc (love using google wallet), processor is good enough, camera is about the sensor not the megapixels (although im sure the software may be holding back the potential).
i take pictures with my phones for a living, when lowering the mega pixels to make the pix easier to send, its still better than the images sent from my droid x or o.g. evo.... like i said sensor... and you are right anyway, epic does take better pix.
LOL no one signed up for the viper, not 1 preorder, wonder why.... lol

whether or not our device is better is certainly no reason to not be excited for the beginning stages of the lte transition ;p
does the galaxy nexus have the curved appeal like the nexus s?
The Gnex is a great device.
First of All,
- It's AOSP (Vanilla ICS)
- Development support (means EVERYTHING is unlocked)
- OCable CPU/GPU
- CNA/AOKP/Gummy base device
- 720p screen
- LTE capable
It's got a lot of what the ET4G doesn't. The CPU/camera may be better on the E4GT, but the GNex still has other specifications that are favored by many.
Yeah, people were a little disappointed when the NS4G specs were revealed (camera not as good as OG Epic etc) but I have more fun now with this phone than I did when I got it. Development will probably be alive and thriving for a long time on the GNex

IMO the 720p screen wasn't a deal breaker our screen looks almost the same

Anyone jump ship from Evo LTE? Regrets?

Hey,
I've been a long time supporter of HTC products, but this Note II caught my eye for the longest time. I was wondering if anyone on here jumped from a EVO LTE to the Note II. What do you guys think of the camera and speaker, also overall userability compared to the EVO LTE? Any regrets?

Not LTE but EVO 3D.. been buying HTC for 6+ years now.. finally gave up on them and went to the Note 2.. didn't like the Epic or the Epic 4G Touch, both which my wife had. Really loving the Note 2 though.. Was never a fan of Samsung phones, but this one's got me.

The speaker on the Note 2 blows the one on the EVO LTE away period. However, my early testing, only in a dark environment so far, is that the EVO has a much better camera. I will do some more extensive testing and report back but I can't imagine anything being better than the LTE camera in good lighting... I had very high hopes for Note 2 camera based on my good results with the first Note plus all of the positive reviews. Again, I only tested in darkness since I had very impressive results with the first Note in this environment but what I have seen so far is concerning. The flash seems to wash out the pics to a degree plus there is some haziness to the pics. I have not heard this mentioned anywhere so I will have to play around a lot more.

I've had every EVO lineup so far!
The two main things that I use a lot right now on my phone is camera and speakers. Hope those two things on the NoteII is good!

BTW, if you can handle the size, there should be absolutely no regrets. You can not find a phone anywhere right now and probably for a while that will match the ovrerall package of features and capabilities a Note 2 presents.

Flash on any phone kills the camera. I've never actually used the flash for camera on the LTE. Maybe couple times to guide me through the darkness, but not for pic
How about the so called HD Recording? How does that compare at night vs during the day.
1) It took about 12 hours but at least this thing is rooted now! Thanks everyone for your work
I too have had every Evo in the series and HTC for 6-8 years. The biggest regret I have right now is knowing that I have to learn pretty simple Odin and all that when I was so familiar with HTC and unlocking bootloaders and what-not. Other than that I don't regret moving to Samsung but time will tell!

I have not tested those yet but I have a 1080P capture from my EVO LTE that has to be the standard setter - this was on a bright day at a race at Daytona (Pepsi 400). I mean this thing is so darn clean and impressive that its looks like 3D (as my manager commented when she saw it) - it almost looks sharper than real life..lol.... I am starting to notice that I was taking a "top of the class" camera and camcorder for granted in the HTC EVO LTE, not to mention the screen and resolution- makes me sad to let it go- I am not making matters any easier for anyone am I...lol... . I have never seen pictures or video from an Iphone 5 but I just don't think it is possible to produce clearer pics and videos (in good light) than I have with my EVO LTE.
I am actually starting to lower my expectations for the Note 2 camera just because the EVO has been so impressive. However, in my experience with the GS2 and Note 1, Samsung makes some top of the line cameras in their own right so maybe I should be more optimistic. I will be sure to report back after I have done some adequate testing over the weekend...
I have had HTC so long i cannot remember the last phone i had that wasn't an HTC. I loved my lte. I won't say i regret it as it is lovely. But honestly in my opinion the lte was perfect.. if i could have an lte with a 5.5 screen than i would have everything.. but an antutu score of 13500... seriously that's something crazy. Camera is not that big a deal to me so i am sure this one will do. I am hoping the things i do not like will be resolved with a custom run when they start coming. Only had it one day and already got root and although they have cwm i am holding out for twrp which should be any time now. In case your wondering the things i do not like are..
1) things on the home screen take up too much room and the dock bar is the biggest culprit of them all.
2) the downloaded apps are in a totally separate page than the rest of the apps. Too much searching for the app i want to use.
3) all the hardware buttons are backwards.. i keep turning the screen off when i am trying to turn the volume down. I guess this one will just take some time.
4) have found no use for the pen yet.. and the multitask bar is nowhere to be seen. Both i imagine will change in time also.
I think that's it. Nit picky stuff i guess but coming from perfection is hard i guess.
My husband had my lte so i can still visit with it hahahaha

I still have my LTE and plan to continue deving on that device as well. They are definitely 2 different phones, that for sure. I do really like the Note 2 though! I'm used to Sense and I like how it is "stock". The only somewhat annoying thing is that I have to find Sense replacements for things, like a good calendar widget (Pure), good lockscreen replacement (WidgetLocker), etc. But it's not a big deal, just something different to get used to.

^^^^^This is kind of what I've notice when compare to My Evo lte (my ex now ). Screen on evo's is brighter which turns to some what a lot better for viewing outdoor. But this note2 is no joke, super smooth (evo is smooth too but note2 is better), loved the speaker and screen size. Camera to me not so good compare to evo lte but im not giving up this note for anything right now.
I am on the same boat as you.
I am currently an EVO4GLTE user and thinking of jumping to the Note2
Frankly, Im impressed by all the extras that samsung adds. I still love the HTC build quality over the SG3, but the note does feel significantly sturdier.
I dont have a tablet. I tried one but never really used it, being unhappy with the oversized FF and the fact that i had to carry 2 devices.
I am looking forward to trying the note2. I am curious as to what the modding community brings and what i would be gaining/missing over the LTE

Hehe best of both world. I myself still/will play with the evo (now my daughter's) and also have my wife iphone5 to compare all three.
So far camera dept - evo> iphone5> note2
Speaker - note2> iphone5> evo
Display - evo/iphone5> note2 but not a whole lot, maybe just outdoor. I'll take the note2 screen size over a little lost outdoor viewing.
All others hands down note2.

Getting used to the size of this device has been my only challenge but this device is amazing if I were presented with the choice to stay with the EVO I would not it is much better than the evo lte

Good hearing things about the Sound quality. Camera for a phone can only get to a certain point. I'm sure it won't be much worst than the LTE itself.
Came from an evo 3d and this is awesome. Installed nove prime and its going well. Maybe the lte isn't far enough removed from this gen to notice a diff.

HTC since my mogul...did have an epic 4g and maybe another Sammy thrown in here and there in last 5 years. I love my EVO LTE but before I get flamed here .. its donzo. LTE everywhere here but unfortunately not usable for me (and a colleague in same situation). I've posted plenty but looooong story very short-gf lives with me and sits on LTE no prob in our house on her S3 (sprint). Sprint sending me replacement monday but I'm pretty certain results will be the same at home for me-unable to maintain an LTE connection for more than a minute. Hey, Hopefully I'm completely wrong and my replacement makes me look like an a#@hole....Outside of that hail Mary ill be getting the note 2 in short order. Look forward to learning a lot here.
