Feedback for Most-Thanked Widget - About xda-developers.com

On XDA, sometimes you come across a thread with dozens, hundreds, or even thousands of replies. Most normal humans don't have the time to read through such a large number of replies in order to find the most useful posts. Today, we're making it much easier for you to find the best replies that get buried within a thread. Introducing the Most-Thanked Widget. It lives in the sidebar (of the 2013 theme) and displays which posts have received the most amount of Thanks. It's divided into All-Time and Recent to help you find the most timely and useful posts. You can help make the Most-Thanked widget even better by being sure to use the Thanks button whenever you spot a useful post across the XDA Forums.
A few other details:
Right now, the Most-Thanked widget is only available for logged-in members as we tweak its performance. However, we'll soon be rolling it out to guests
The widget ignore post 1, because most people know that post 1 often contains the most useful information; we didn't want to be redundant
All members are limited to eight Thanks per day. Use your Thanks wisely!
The Most-Thanked widget is a work in progress! We'll be tweaking its logic over the coming weeks and months to make it as useful as possible. Thanks for your patience. Feel free to provide some feedback here

^^ Glad to see I'm not the only one who's still on the 2010 theme then It's so much nicer and more user friendly IMO.

Great idea, brilliant for overcrowded threads. Could you add an "option" or tab to leave out the posts by the OP? Having the posts has both advantages and disadvantages, as the users tend to thank the OP a lot. On the other hand, the OP only posts updates, so not having their post in the tab would be bad. That's why you should add a choice, best for both Maybe just limit the no. of posts by OP to 1 or 2

Great idea. Thanks for this svetius.
I'm finding it a little bit laggy at the moment but I'd figure that's just because it's only just been implemented. It's not a major lag though

Yeah this is an awesome idea, but any way to integrate it into the XDA 2010 them for those of us who don't like the 2013 one?

I think they'll probably see how it goes for now and then think about implementing it to a previous version.

It's a cool idea and even nicer to see I'm in both all time top 5's of the ICS and JB version of the ROM I support
Only niggle for me is that it takes the place of the existing widget (messages/threads/forums) so you have to go back out of the thread to then see your subscribed threads again. I use this to navigate the threads I want to read as have links to all the forums I moderate so not too bothered about those. Would be cool to have a subscription (or whatever you want to call it) and thanks tab or something along those lines so you can then still have quick access to both when in a thread.
As for those still preferring the 2010 theme, once you're used to it the 2013 theme is so much nicer to use and I've never viewed the portal as much as I do now thanks to the 5 most recent posts always being shown on the sidebar. I love it!

i wish both widgets exist in that side bar.. as its not already full and we can have both with leftover space in right side panel..

sir.. great idea.. thanks for this.. as its new i know it might have bugs..
so it seems there is a bug.. if the posts shown dont have titles.. then the title if its there for above post in thanks widget is shown for the below one too.. which is kinda annoying.. as they might be totally unrelated posts.. also some posts shown in widget doesnt have appropriate link to the actual post when clicked..
also 1 suggestion: please provide the message, threads, forums widget inside threads too along with this widget.. it helps a lot..
thanks for the widget again..
Edit: oops.. sorry for second post.. i could have edit the above one. i forgot that i wrote.

It's a preference thing. I've used the 2013 and it's too busy for me, I like the cleaner brown with a portal button at the top left if I want to view portal stories (which I do daily) I can go there.
I don't ever see me moving to the 2013 theme and I really hope they integrate this most thanked post feature into the 2010 theme because it's a really useful feature.

SPOILER Show/Hide Tags

Is there any way to have show/hide tags such as
Spoiler
text
, to have a block of text hidden until you click on it?
Relevant links:

I'd like something like this for my guide so it doesn't show all sections at once. That way the person can choose to show only the section they're working on.
Does this exist on these forums?
If not, can the site admin consider adding it?
Also, is there a way to "hack" this in via the [ HTML ] tags?
Not at the moment. Something like this maybe in vB4 when we upgrade.
Spoiler tags seems a bit hacky, the admin's might consider if there is something a bit more user friendly or fit for purpose.
Collapsing information seems the wrong way to do it. I think a navigation (contents page) that allows quick thread navigation without opening in a new window / tab would be better.
Dave
Doh, that's too bad.
I'm not sure what you mean by a contents page? Splitting up one post into several, may make things a bit more hectic?

Like the contents page on Media Wiki pages : http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Agile_software_development
In my experience, so long as the posts are sequential and the OP has the ingenuity to disable their sig until the last post, it's not too bad.

Ah I see.
What if you only have the first post in a thread?

Post less? (j/k)
I was thinking about linking inside a thread. HTML allows Anchor / Name tags to do this. A way of building a contents page could be handy.
So the contents could have:
Post 1
- Part 1
- Part 2
Post 2
-Part 3
etc. etc.
It might just be a dream though : http://www.vbulletin.org/forum/showthread.php?p=2031310
Dave
I also think that this would be a good idea. For example, a rom developer could hide the changelog, todo list, Q&A, etc leaving the first post much less cluttered and simpler to navigate, but still displaying the same ammount of information. I know how to use anchors and links with HTML, but I don't really know if most people know all the code, and it would be more complicated. For example, just a single link to an anchor named banana would be Link to banana. It would be much simpler to just use a

Yes, another excellent idea!
A collapsible tag could be useful in so many situations!
Here's another possible use: signatures. Almost everyone has a list of the phones they have, current rom, radio, spl, recovery, mods, themes, etc. We could literally change 5-10 lines of text to a single "show" button on every single post on every forum. I have no idea how much work it would take to implement this, but it would really be a kickass idea.
Hi everyone,
i know this is a pretty old topic, but i wanted to know if it is meanwhile possible to build a "spoiler"?
i wanted to post a logcat-log but its like 100+ strings long so it would be pretty nice to make this information collapsable to keep threads clear.
thanks in advance

You could use a
Code:
box.
Sorry for also resurrecting an old thread but I too would love a collapsible tag.
As with the OP, I think it would be a real boon to writing guides.
I have a multi-part guide I'm working on/maintaining for the Arc but for each part of it, I'd love to be able to have it split into independently-expandable sections, it would make it so much easier to divide it up clearly and to hide necessary but lesser-used information.

It is already, especially in some dev threads where people post full logcats
Also, in one thread, I had posted a complete diff between two kernel versions, so implementation if this in the app would also be awesome(although you'll have to talk to tapatalk guys, hope they understand)

how to add favourites XDA android app

Hi guys I'm still quite new to the forums and have just purchased the XDA premium app for android but I cant seem to find how to favourite a thread so it will show in the favourites tab. all helps appreciated thanks!
It's cool man - find the topic you like, press and hold on it then choose subscribe. It'll then show up under favorites. I believe you have to from the list of topics though, not while you're actually viewing it. Hope this helps!

That is quiet not user friendly, since we have "subscribe" to receive email notifications for new replies...
Talking about confusing, eh?
yes, poorly implemented.
With such a large forum I thought favorites would be helpful to shortcut to the sub-forums I read.
subscribe to make a favorite. to me that implies I would get alerts for all new posts which I don't want. we'll see.

You can shortcut the forums you'd like.
Simply long press on it and a Create Shortcut option is the bottom option.
Also, no you won't get alerts for all new posts. The only way you get alerted for new posts, is if you subscribe to a single thread and change the option to get notified.

Removal of some very irritating features

Hello I just joined xda developers and immediatly noticed something very irritating >
1. The capcha before posts - a capcha at signup is enough for most people , aren't u guys a little too paranoid.
2. Quick reply options in threads and removal of the title bar for posts - haven't yet seen even one post which uses a title bar in 5 hours
captcha needed to stop spammers

If you saw the amount of spam that manages to slip through then you would see why the captcha is still necessary for a time after signing up. It should stop after your next couple of posts however.
Unfortunately people are sometimes in too much of a hurry to type a title in for posts and the titles don't show in the XDA app, but they are still important to keep and use.
Captcha's unreadable
It is nice to know that the captcha's go away eventually. I have seen other forums that have been entirely taken over by spam-bots, so I understand the need, but the captcha's in use on this site are about 90% unreadable. I mean literally unreadable, the text is clipped so that only a corner of one of the letters is visible. I have to click the next captcha button on an average of 5 times bfore getting to one that I think I MIGHT know what it says...
P.S. This is a wonderful example of that, I tried to post this without the PS, and it turns out I was not correctly reading the captcha. This one looks a little better, so here is hoping...

Seriously? So you'd prefer having to go to a post, click 'quote', be taken to a separate page to type your reply (on which you won't be able to scroll through the thread gathering info or whatever for your reply), clicking post and then being redirected back to the page again causing it to refresh? Quick reply is fast and handy (hence the name).
As for the title bar, you've got to be kidding me. I don't think it even deserves an explanation.

The fact that their are captchas really isn't the problem. It is that they really are almost 90-95% unreadable. I have had some captcha pop up that literally was just the bottom corner of a letter and that was it during registration. I had to refresh about 20 times before I found one that I could sorta read.

For me the quick reply works perfect on pc(chrome) and my stock HTC one s browser. And I'm using the 2013 theme as well, so the theme would not be the probleme I think.
Why don't you try some other browsers like opera, chrome or safari ?

That's true, but in a mobile community where most US US are using the smartphone and the creepy autocorrect or our fingers are doing mistakes, I guess at least the edit function should be allowed without waiting 5 minutes. Any word posted mistakenly here can be seen at least 10 times in 5 minutes (and there is judge chance to get a reply with quote and the mistake will be visible forever)

The reason it is not allowed is that spammers would use it to add links that they would not have been able to include in the original post. I know it is a pain, but "read twice, post once".

Sorry Men Actually I identified the probelemn that i was using the nightly of firefox and that seemed to be the problemn everything works good with the stable version of ff with the same profile and addons as the nightly build.

Cool new feature

I found a cool new feature.. I don't know if it was already present in the ICS build but I'm sure its new from JELLYBEAN
Long press the microphone button and you'll get a view of the clipboard!
it was there before, you would get a few choices when you held the mic , handwrite, clipboard, settings
Oh. LOL ! I never noticed maybe they didn't include it on the T999V model then.
I can't see the the clipboard after copying images and text to the clipboard. I see the options when long pressing the microphone but when i click the icon with the paper and the paperclip, nothing happens. I don't see what you see in the screenshot. I am on ICS
I don't know maybe they expanded the feature in jellybean? Can someone else confirm this?

I was browsing / reading this post and instantly got annoyed with what you are doing. It seems you are trying to confuse readers by putting long signature with a “banner” or an advertisement if you will – I really do not want to check out your blog (even if it might be interesting), I don’t not want to see you advertisements. Sadly “De-Thanks” button isn’t available for you, in fact you should be paying to the XDA community for posting adds here.

So what you are saying is no one should have 'ads' in their signature? So those linking to their custom roms, tutorials here on xda, video help links....should not post their 'ads' either? He is linking to his thread for custom work for the S3 and a link to relevant info on the S3. Whats the big deal? If you don't want to visit, just keep scrolling the thread. No on putting a gun to your head making you click his link.
If you cant stand people's signatures with links, go into your Control Panel and turn off signatures. Its that simple.

Anyways, can someone confirm if this "SAME" feature was there on ICS? With the little menu of clipboard copies underneath when you press it.

Makes the "XDA 2013 Beta - 1024" XDA theme look more like "XDA 2010". For those who prefer the old fonts and colors, but still want all the new features of the 2013 theme (e.g. DevDB).
Make sure you're using the "XDA 2013 Beta - 1024" theme on XDA to use this userstyle correctly.

Download:
Grab it from userstyles.org:
http://userstyles.org/styles/94422/xda-2013-to-2010?r=1382614350
Installation:
You'll need Stylish (Stylish for Firefox | Stylish for Chrome | Stylish for Opera | Stylish for Safari) or a similar add-on to apply the userstyle.
FAQ:
Q: Does this theme apply to all of XDA?
A: No, it only changes the forums (the Portal, Wiki, etc are untouched).
Q: I found a part that isn't themed!
A: Let me know, post a link to the page and I'll fix it.
Q: 2010 still has different layouts, some items are in different positions, etc. Can you change that?
A: It depends. Basically, I probably won't be able to change any item's position and make it look good using a userstyle.
Q: Are the ads removed?
A: No.
Q: How can I be notified of updates?
A: Stylish should automatically check & download updates (unless you have that option turned off). Otherwise I'll post in this thread whenever I update, so you can also subscribe if you want.
Q: Can I check the source code?
A: It's available on userstyles.org, just click the "Show Code" button.
Q: Are there any risks?
A: Risks are explained here, and you can check the code to make sure it's clean.

One more thing -> You have made XDA reborn. IMHO..
Truly stylin'
Hey @GermainZ
Just wanted to thank you for turning my page dark. At first I tried the Dark XDA "Retro" 2010 look and liked it...until I saw your signature and the fully Dark XDA Theme with the Universal Mods. Love this look! It's so much easier on the eyes too after spending so much time in front of a computer all day.
I try never to skip a day of the News board or XDA on Google+ because I know I'm bound to find something cool to learn or to try. And today, my friend, you made the News thread and XDA site more of a playground than it already was for me. Lol Awesome work, sir!!
Thanks again,
tinydynamite00
Sorry ... accidentially posted in the wrong thread.
There's so much difference between xda 2010 theme and xda 2015 theme! Amazing work :good: :good: :good:
I've been around for so long, and it's only now that i found this...
It's never to late to say thanks, so many, many thanks, i find it way better like this
Also like your dark/blue theme, but the unread threads aren't too easily to find for me.
I don't know if you can understand what i mean, but even if the unread threads are bold, they don't catch my eyes as they do in the 2013 to 2010 theme
@GermainZ I don't know if you'll ever come back here but... here's a little question, would it be possible to move the "subscribe forum" and "mark forum read" buttons as we loose many space because of them ?
i've made a screenshot to make it more clear :
