WiFi Tether App Still Working? - Epic 4G Apps

I've been using the WiFi Tether App on my Epic 4g (CM9) for quite some time. I haven't had to use it for about a month, but it was working previously.
I tried to use the app today to browse with my iPad. The app initializes and connected without issue. However, my iPad will start to load a web page and stop about half way. Checking the app, I see that the download meter starts to tick upward, but quickly stops. The odd thing is that the mail app is working, downloading mail items at the set interval.
Is anyone else successfully using this app at this time? I'm trying to figure out if Sprint is blocking the packets requested by the iPad, or if I have an issue with the app or phone.
I've tried the following troubleshooting steps: (Note: app was properly configured and working several weeks ago)
- Rebooted the phone
- Installed the latest Beta
- Checked internet connection on the phone (working just fine)
Thanks,
- X

Maybe you can increase the data usage to higher limits. I'm using it right now on my laptop without issues. Also, I would recommend using the beta 11 and not to update to 14, and do not update the program even if it says "Update" available in the PlayStore. For some reason it gives issues.

Actually, I can't stand my iPad. Work gave it to me. I only use it until the apps I need make their way to Andriod.
At home I have my fire-sale Touchpad running CM9. I use that whenever I can.
I'll keep playing with the settings. At least you've confirmed that Sprint is not blocking it. I was suspicious because the data would fly-in for the first 2 seconds before dropping to 0.
Thanks!

Why don't you use the built in tether WiFi AP in cm9?

Ok, here's the oddball thing. It is only my iPad that is being blocked from the data. My CM9 Touchpad (chrome) is able to access the data without an issue.
The only thing that's changes on the iPad is the upgrade to iOS 6, so perhaps the problem is with the iPad and not the tether app. I'm still suspicious that Sprint is picking off Safari packets or something, but that's likely my paranoia kicking in. I'll keep experimenting...

[Q] Rooted 2.2 and wireless tether on the Dinc

I'm trying to run wireless tether (http://code.google.com/p/android-wifi-tether/) on a Droid Incredible which has been updated to stock 2.2 and then rooted. I'm running wireless tether 2.0.5 pre 9 and everyting seems to work and I can connect to the phone from my laptop (running Win XP), but then I can maybe sometimes load a single web page and then I get timed out connections. It seems that DNS resolution is working as I get answers from nslookup in a command window.
Is anyone else having problems getting wireless tethering working? The web pages I've found on the subject seem to be from before Froyo came to the Dinc, even the Google project page doesn't mention 2.2.

Have not tried Wireless Tether with 2.2 since I can use the 3G Wirelecc Hotspot that comes with 2.2. All you need to do is this:
1. On your phone, bring up the dialer and dial ##778. This will load EPST.
2. Select EDIT.
3. Enter 000000 for the password.
4. Select SECURITY.
5. Select the username that has [email protected].
6. Edit the username to read [email protected] (delete "dun.").
7. Click the back button to return to the list.
8. Select M.IP DEFAULT PROFILE.
9. Repeat steps 5 and 6.
10. Click on MENU and select COMMIT.
You will not be charged for its use.
Thanks, I just tried that and got it working, but I thought that using the Google code was a little safer that it would never be accidentally switched back to paid mode.
I also noticed that when I tried to change the ssid or password that whenever I left the config screen and came back they were back to default values. Have you been able to change the 3g hotspot ssid/password?

Yu have to have a computer link first and then it will keep the settings. Do not know why they set it up this way.
Thanks, got it changed now - in fact I'm using that connection now.
Does this mean the wireless tether project is totally obsolete?

No, for those who do not have 2.2 yet, it is still an option (and a good one). Some people just like using it over the 3g Wireless Hotspot. I have used both and prefer the 3G Wireless Hotspot. I have no issues with it and get easy connects.
Is the equivalent procedure for the Droid X known yet? I've got a friend who just got his X updated to Froyo.

I do not know. Do a search for ESPT for the Droid X and see if it has a simular setup. If it does, the same changes should work for it.
Any updates on this? I'm on a rooted 2.2 incredible and wifi tether will not play with my ipad. Based upon what I've read, the issue surrounds the fact that the mac address refreshes on the app while the ipad does not like this and most ad hoc connections. I've heard that activaiton hack for the stock mobile wifi is no longer valid. Anyone else tethering?
Thanks,

The stock 3g hack still works also wireless tether pre15 works perfect for me

I just got my DINC and installed PDAnet to thether and have found that the hotspot works, but doesn`t allow me to go to secure sites, when I do this it brings up the Verizon page for subscribing for $20. I have done nothing other than install
PDAnet( the free version).
Zexel, follow the instructions on comment #2 of this thread and you'll be all better.

I've tried searching, but cannot find anything. Does this, or will this work? Seems when I try, Verizon wants to charge me for it. And I already pay them more than I'd like..

Are you using the Wireless Tether from market or one of the betas from Google Code?

Tried downloading about 9 times, all unsuccessful. Went to a site that redirects me to the Market, and it says it's unavailable. LTE version, so maybe Verizon is preventing it. Obviously I am rooted, but has anyone else non-GSM been able to get this working?

I have used the last three versions.
1st one "WiFi Tether for Root Users 3.1-beta9 *** BETA *** " dropped out here and there and would not shut down. Had to go to force close to get it to turn off.
2nd one "WiFi Tether for Root Users 3.1-pre113 *** EXPERIMENTAL *** Experimental was OK but when I shut it down my phones wireless icon would come back grayed out and not work and I would have to toggle it to get back to normal.
3rd and current to date "WiFi Tether for Root Users 3.1-beta10 *** BETA *** Featured" fixed the problem in the 2nd one. Seems OK, need to run it more. I love the 4G speed connections.

I've been following a thread on the tether developer forum, even beta 10 is still sketchy. http://code.google.com/p/android-wifi-tether/issues/detail?can=2&q=1257&colspec=ID%20Type%20Status%20Priority%20Milestone%20Owner%20Summary&id=1257
Here's the thread. Basically there's still "dropouts" both in the data stream itself, and in the wifi access point "disappearing" from the device that is tethering to it (wifi network disconnects and device can't see it to reconnect until wifi tether is turned off and back on.) Hoping for fixes soon.
If you're willing to throw down $10, Wifi and USB Tether is working fine for me. It doesn't even require root somehow.

Wifi tether works great. I've pushed 600mb through it with no trouble at all. Tethering with LTE is awesome.
I loaded the 115 experimental today and like how it closes much cleaner with my WiFi icon reappearing and re-enabling promptly.
I'll test it for longevity tomorrow.

Because the phone connects through the same access point for tethering and mobile use. There's no way for VZW to tell what you're doing unless they packet sniff your traffic. That's a lot of work that's not going to make them anywher near enough money to justify the efort of doing it then billing you (and taking your complaint call when you dial the CSR's)unless you're being a pest and pulling down 50+GB on LTE, or 20GB+ on 3G. They could, but won't unless your usage sticks out.
That's why there's a dial-in in the first place. It's easier to set up a paywall on-device (even if it's easily by-passed by those in-the-know) than to build and staff a network-wide monitoring system that might even catch fire from the Feds over privacy concerns.
I'm running pre110 and I can't seem to connect to https sites. Normal http sites work fine.
EDIT: Beta 10 work on both. I was able to connect to FB and my bank.
Keep in mind if your rooted you don't need the google betas.

[Q] Wifi Hotspot Lag Issues

On stock FC09, I was having an issue with the Sprint Hotspot app. I used to be able to stay connected days/weeks at a time with 2 devices connected: Desktop with Windows 7 and a Laptop with Windows XP. I installed Windows 7 on the laptop a few days ago all of the sudden I would disconnect every 45 minutes to an hour on my desktop. Note: The disconnect/reconnect issue, is no longer the issue, just back history.
Today I rooted my phone using the pre-rooted FC09 using Odin with CWM. All went successfully and my phone is now fully rooted. I installed "Wireless Tether" and whenever I spoke on TeamSpeak 3, I would immediately lag and no one could understand me. I also use mIRC+NNS, so I was using that to track the lag. Here's a picture of irregular latency upon speaking of: i.imgur.com/t9JuS.png Anyways, I can basically see whenever I have high latency. And this latency is beyond the normal lag, it's an 18-35 second delay to the IRC server. My normal latency before this was 140ms, now it's 18,000ms - 30,000ms.
Whenever I open up FireFox while using Wireless Tether, Barnacle Tether Sprint Hotspot, I immediately start lagging when loading a webpage and I don't mean just like slowly loading, I mean it takes up to 3 minutes to load a webpage that has no images. I decided to go back to the original Sprint app and connect. Now that application is having the same issue. I'm getting insane latency whenever I speak on TS, load a webpage, etc.
Phone Info (after rooting):
Model number SPH-D700
Firmware version: 2.3.6
Baseband version: S700.0.5S.FC09
Kernel version: 2.6.35.7
Build number: GINGERBREAD.FC09
Hardware version: D700.0.5
3G Connection (I don't live in a 4G area)
Before this issue, I could use mIRC, play BF3, talk on TS, browse the internet while providing service to a laptop that's doing lite browsing, pogo.com games.
Solutions I've tried:
Clearing Dalvik cache.
Clearing partition cache.
Clearing the application's cache (Wireless Tether, Barnacle Tether).
Using a different application (Barnacle Tether)
Changing "channels" in the app settings.
Disabling/Enabling various app options.
Uninstalling/Installing RC/Beta versions of Wireless Tether and an older version.
Rebooting the phone.
Rebooting my PC.
Running virus scans with Malwarebytes.
Connecting with only my PC.
Connecting with only the laptop.
"su rm /data/data/android.tether/bin/fixroute.sh" (not sure what that did though cuz it said no such file found).
Using official Sprint Hotspot app.
I'm okay with being stuck with paying Sprint an extra 30 dollars a month for the WiFi app, but now that doesn't work properly. If anyone has a solution to my problem or suggestion, I'd really appreciate the help.
Thanks.

Yeah, I don't know. I was still having the problem so I ended up flashing to CM7 and then flashing the modem to EC05, then EL30. Once I rebooted from that it started working flawlessly with Wireless Tether.

AT&T Galaxy S3, what tethering app is everyone using?

So I know AT&T, being the disgusting American capitalist corporation that they are, decided to completely disable wireless tethering and make you pay for it with a monthly fee on your bill. This is completely unacceptable if you ask me.
This is a thread to see what Wi-Fi tethering apps you guys are using, with and without root. Hopefully we can get a list going so people can try out some different ones if certain ones don't work for them.
I'm using a completely stock phone, unrooted. Just downloaded FoxFi from their website, and installed the apk on my phone. It's usually available on Google Play but AT&T decided to block it. However, I can confirm that if you download the APK and install it that Wi-Fi tethering works perfectly. I connected my work laptop to my phone just now and used dropbox for a bit, and I also tried a few different websites.

if you download an app, the only thing AT&T would be able to see is your data usage. if your data usage all of sudden goes up, that's usually related to tethering.

definitely not true.
they can tell by the number of 'hops' that data traffic goes through to the end client. that is how they found me. i was using CM9 (built-in enabled hotspot) for 3 months on my old phone and they finally sent me the "Did you know tethering requires a plan?" text, and sent me a letter telling me I had to stop before X date or they'd change my data plan. when I called in playing dumb they listed off a number of apps that i might have used 'accidentally', which was the list of all the tethering apps i've heard of, and asked if i used them.
IMHO, the only safe way to tether via wifi on an unrooted phone would be to set up ADB via wifi, then use Easytether over that wifi ADB connection. Anything that resembles straightforward "phone as transparent access point" is too easy for carriers to detect. You have to masquerade your traffic, and the more opaque you can make it (say, by further tunneling it over a PPTP or L2TP VPN), the better.
A rooted phone has a few additional possibilities, but they involve completely replacing the tethering app that's bundled with the phone with one that goes out of its way to masquerade your traffic and disguise its wifi-routed origins.
You can also change over to a mobileshare plan. It's saving me a few bucks per month, and tethering is allowed with no additional fee.
"Tethering and/or mobile hotspot use is permitted with Mobile Share plans with capable Designated Devices; provided, however, that such use is limited to a maximum of five (5) simultaneous users per Device." "If you use a tethering and/or mobile hotspot Device with more than five (5) simultaneous users, you agree that AT&T may suspend or terminate service to the account."
So it looks like they're watching for multiple receivers in the traffic and if they see more than 6 (the device itself and 5 attached clients), then it flags.

I use wifi tether. It was the only thing that let me connect to my vpn and tether at the same time.
Haven't used it very much tbh. Maybe 2 hours total in the past couple of weeks. But so far so good
I don't think att would have an idea I was tethering since all the data is going through my vpn and is encrypted.
If they somehow managed to find out, I'm prepared to take them to court and will ask for proof in discovery which would make everything public as far as how they caught me.

Hello all,
I have been using this tethering method for a few weeks now, but all of sudden, my phone gets stuck on "Please wait while verifying..." message. It never errors, and I can cancel the process. I have tried to restore the offical tethering files, in hope to get the "Please call blah blah for more information message, but the same result happens too. My phone did recently download a system update, but I haven't allowed it to install. If anyone can shed some light on this I would greatly appreciate it.

Wifi Tethering No Upsell and NO USER AGENT SPOOFING [Solved] [UPDATED - 10/21/2014]

I have spent over a year trying to resolve the tethering issue with T-Mobile and their upsell page that appears after you have maxed your hotspot data limit. It seems that some people can get around it using 'user agent spoofing' while others don't need to. I thought I would share my latest findings on this topic. I have successfully enabled Wi-Fi Tethering without needing to use user agent spoofing when using Windows browsers. This was achieved hours after T-Mobile sent me a text saying my hotspot data limit had been reached. First, a rundown of my Note 3:
T-Mobile Note 3
TWRP 2.8.0.0 Recovery
HyperDrive ROM Release 5
Compulsion Kernel 16
Wifi Tether v3.4 experimental ( http://code.google.com/p/android-wi...e=wifi_tether_v3_4-experimental1.apk&can=2&q= )
There are some screenshots below showing my settings:
MSS Clamping (MSS Clamping only appears in the options when using a kernel that supports it).
Routing Fix should be also checked.
Update: Just updated my Hyperdrive ROM to ver. 5 and I had to switch the device profile to Galaxy S3 to get it to work. Not sure why but using the device profile for the Galaxy Nexus (CDMA/LTE) stopped working.
UPDATE 2: I also failed to mention that, for me at least, I have to start tethering twice before it shows up as a wireless connection. Not sure why but it just can't be seen the first time you launch it after a fresh boot ...for me anyway. So, if it doesn't work the first time just stop it and fire it up again. Should be golden from then on!
UPDATE 3: Another update? So soon? Well, yes because I seem to keep forgetting to mention important details. A.D.D. at work! Heh! Ok, first off I highly recommend using Googles DNS servers (8.8.8.8 and 8.8.4.4) as you will most likely have problems if you don't. Place them in the ip4 properties of your PC's wireless adapter.
It's important to note that sometimes you will not acquire DNS when connecting to your hotspot. This is fixed by simply selecting the 'T-Mobile Tethering' APN prior to activating Wi-Fi tethering.
I haven't changed anything else from within Android or with any other apps.
Please post your results because defeating the upsell page has been an ongoing problem for me and many others and this has resolved it for me. I have full tethering access on my PC at LTE speeds as though it was a dedicated internet connection.
NO MORE USER AGENT SWITCHING!
Please hit the thank you button if this has helped you. Best of luck!

Defeating the upsell page is easy
First of all if you can enable the hotspot on your device you can use any mobile device without seeing the upsell page as the system relies on USER AGENT STRINGS to identiry your device. So on windows or mac firefox or chrome install a user agent switcher. Then use it to choose say chrome for android. Simply refresh the page and you are up and running. Some pages will not always display right as you will get the mobile version. You can also run programs such as utorrent and teamviewer without modifications through the hotspot. Any questions just ask..

This works without needing User Agent mods and doesn't trigger the upsell page even after your Hotspot limit has been exceeded.
Nice! !!
Awesome!!! Works like you said. Thx. ...
Thank you so much, this worked great..I use to always have a problem connecting my ps3 to my phone, would get the upsell page immediately, but now it seems to be working fine, I can go online with my ps3 using your settings. Been looking for a long time for a way to do this. Once again thank you. I did not see the option to check MSS clamping, but it seems to work fine.
Can't get this to work on Tweaked 3.9 for the Note 3. Not that it's needed, since native tethering works without any tethering data usage ever being detected. But I've always liked this app and native tethering takes several minutes for data to flow properly.

Did you try it with the Compulsion 16 kernel? I couldn't get it to work originally until I installed it. Not 100% sure that it matters yet as I haven't done any more testing without it or with other kernels. I don't want to mess with it too much as it's my main phone for home/work and home internet.

please help.
I have the new hyper drive as well. I have been battling a issue for a few days now and I am so happy I found this. Heres my issue, I use my hot spot as well as teathering every day. But I also tend to flash back and forth between ROMs as well, so its impossible for me to pin point how much hot spot data I used. Any way, it worked fine but now this happens....
first it will connect to my laptop, the phone shows its connected my laptop says connected as well yet it is limited access on the laptop with out internet access. When I switch it off to try again the hot spot on the phone will not even connect. It just fails over and over and over. After a reboot it starts the proccess over again. I am running the hyper drive ROM on my n900t
Is this better than wifi tether router? Because it works really good and i dont even have to setup anything I just turn it on and thats it!!

I got the message today that I reached my 5gb tethering limit.. So I installed this and followed the screenshots. I'm on compulsion kernal, with effortless ROM. No dice my internet still won't tether even after changing the APN to T-Mobile tether..
