[Q] WebOS - Sprint Samsung Galaxy S III

As I was using my phone, I had a flashback to my Palm Pre. I still love WebOS and I cant shake this longing feeling to have it back. And please dont go suggesting that I should just use that then, I just bought the SIII and love it to death I just would love to see a WebOS port on here, what are your guys opinions? And is it plausible? Considering it is another Linux variant.

You so crazy!

Sure let's port a dead o.s. with no app support.... I loved webos it was just way to late to the game ... too much work. Have to write drivers from scratch for all hardware, and you get what benefit basically a launcher...

Buy a palm pre if you want web os so bad.
Apple just give up the IPHONE sucks deal with it.

webOS? lmao. I had a Palm Pre for over a year and that OS is POS. May it rest in peace.

HP WebOS + Galaxy S2

Do the Tmobile Galaxy s2 have the same chipset as the hp touchpad? So would hp webos work on this phone? Since webos is open source now and has anyone ported it to anything yet?
thanks, btw im new so my questions may seem dumb. lol.
Ween is is meant for tablets not phones and even if we could port Web OS to the galaxy S2, somebody would have to program the kennel and that's not very easy. what do you wanna do with Web OS anyway, Android is much better?

That's a good start. WebOS isn't "junk" by any stretch of the imagination. It was/is a nice OS that was a victim of poor decisions on HP's part.

Web OS is great I use it more often than android Web OS is visually better than android 2.3. If you want a Web OS device Im sure you can get a palm 3 for 250.00 which is a nice device with no support.
the HP tablet and our phone does have almost identical spec, except for the screen size
but i would NEVER install that piece of crap Web OS in our phone even if it'll run on our phone

You do realize that a large portion of ICS was stolen from WebOS when Matias Duarte left HP for Google. WebOS is still the best UI and the best for multi-funcionality, better than android and better than iOS. Don't confuse crappy HP with the product itself because WebOS is quite good, it's just that HP had no clue what to do with it.

I don't consider webOS junk at all, just because you prefer to use android doesn't exactly mean that all other mobile OS's are inferior in any way. I would like to see alternative roms for a phone that aren't just Android. Would make purchasing a phone allot more of a fun experience in my opinion.
i had a touchpad before, the multitasking on it was so smooth but sadly hp launched the touchpad late compare to the other tablets on the market. It was destined to sell poorly
It sold poorly because it came to the market late and was sort of underpowered for webOS.
Android is a great operating system, but webOS now that it's open source, would be a great addition to the SGS2.
What's great about webOS is the multitasking experience and it's built upon open web technologies.
I'd flash webOS on my SGS2 if it were available. Kinda doubting it though
I was really hoping to find something productive in this thread. I like webOS and would still own a webOS device if HP would have created a device that wouldn't fry when I plugged it into a charger. I loved the os that was very fun and easy to use.

I'd definitely be interested in webOS, I actually REALLY like that OS
Considering that the last OTA version of webOS for phones came out in December 2011 and that the App Catalog currently has less than 10,00 apps (and dropping), I think I'll stick with Android. It would be interesting to see it running on an Inc2, but it seems like it would merely be a novelty.

having had the palm pre, dont bother
webos is neat, but the device is so crappy/small/cheap its not worth spending 5 minutes with
there is a lot of open webos development on the touchpad, and its a much better implemenation of it....if you can pick one up cheap, thats a better route to go

And apple thought samsung stole their UI? cant wait for this. Surprised RIM could scrounge up enough money to develop anything at this point. Almost seems like they are reinventing what all phones already do. I dunno, just my 2cents. Yes BB were the leaders of smartphones, but that was at a time when their competition was palm and their $600-800 mini tablet/phones.

Being a nice OS just isn't enough in the modern smartphone market. Apps, killer hardware and a device people actually want to use are what matter.

What's with all the rampant fanboyism? You guys sound like iOS fans who were oblivious to Android before. Guess what happened to them?
RIM was really slow to adapt with their old keyboard phones, yes, but this new video is showing that they ARE starting to adapt and actually rethinking the interface flow. iOS homescreen was all icons and they sat on that without innovation for years. Android gave us widgets, pulldown notifications, and a recents menu, but you still have to press a button to see it. BB10 is saying **** it, make the thumbnails on the homescreen itself, and have the messaging hub always swipable. They are good ideas, even if they aren't going to dominate the market anytime soon.

Yea seems interesting.. Does definitely seem like a mix between mostly iOS and some android in their.. Looks user friendly looks smooth but to me its a little bit of ugly. Device itself is ugly, and also os already seems outdated their nothing really exciting or revolutionary so yea. Good luck with that.

I'm definitely interested in taking Ubuntu for a test drive, but I do have a few concerns:
1 - There is no lock screen, but the phone is still somehow secure. I don't feel great about that. Having a lock screen in place gives me the added peace of mind that if my phone is lost or stolen, I know that my data will be initially secure, and will probably remain secure until I remotely wipe the device.
2 - I'm not sure how I feel about a completely gesture-driven device. I had the original Palm Pre at the time, and I didn't find myself using the gestures unless I absolutely needed to (i.e. closing out cards, going back in the browser, etc.). Thankfully, the phone was a hybrid of gestures and physical hardware buttons. There won't be any hardware buttons on any Ubuntu phone.
3 - The device unity selling point doesn't sell me. I'd never use my phone as my home computer. My desktop and laptop are far more robust in terms of capability than any phone, and I'd rather just use those.
4 - I'm having a hard time believing that desktop-grade applications will run smoothly on a phone. Sure, developers will be encouraged to bundle a mobile interface, but I'm not sold on the notion that someday in the near future I'll be playing Portal 2 on my phone.
5 - The home screen looks crazy. I'm not a huge fan of the hodgepodge that will be files, media, and apps strewn about the home screen. In hindsight, I like the process existing mobile OS's take to reduce clutter. Open the app, then open media recognized by the app. That process keeps things clean.
Ubuntu isn't exactly easy on the eyes, either. That magenta-y, orange-ish theme is hideous. Even the font that they use sucks. Undoubtedly, however, that can be fixed through themeing the rom. However, I love stock rom experiences, so I know that a theme would irk me. Just my OCD, I guess.
It's core strength is multi-tasking, of which I'm very interested in. It seems to be very intuitive. I'd love to play around with that.
Web-based apps on the phone are definitely intriguing.
I didn't really care for the dig that they made on Android regarding Java. Java was put in place for rapid application development. On lower-end phones, I can see a Java environment being overhead on the operating system, but with my Optimus G, it hardly even knows its there. The OG is a beast.
I'm definitely going to be paying attention to the developments made with Ubuntu Mobile. I'll be dusting off my GNex when the image does get released.
