[Q] MicroSD mounts as read only. How do I fix? - T-Mobile, Samsung Galaxy SIII

T-999 Freegs3 rom and kt747 kernel Card is a Patriot sdhc 32gb class 4
The concise problem: I can't write anything on the extsdcard ie. Make folder, copying files, take pictures, save files, ect
Details: the card seems to mount as r/o or r/w randomly. When it does mount as r/w it changes to r/o whenever something is being written to it randomly(more often than not even if it is a small 2k file). Card works fine on pc and has worked once in executing directory bind(the copy folder option). I have tried to change to a few different roms and kernels(like 2). Tried a different card same make and model. And it's a problem with 2 phones both rooted the same way but have since undergone similar rom/kernel changes(just mix and match diferently). I was able to see the r/w or r/of with root explorer.
I have done Google search but not found this specific problem where the actual phone is having problems writing to the SD. Please help thanx

I'm having the same problem. It's sporadic too. My sd card has been working fine and then last night I went to take a picture and it said sd card could not be written to. So far no help on my thread about this either.

Have you guys tried formatting it with a partition manager on your computer?
Backup the content to your PC first as you said it reads it fine, then format it?
Fat32, or try a different partitioning a different format.

64gb Micro sd formatted

I got my ATT Note 2 last night and its great so far. When I plugged in the Sandisk Class 10 64gb microsd card I got on amazon, it did not ask to format it. When I go to settings it shows the card and 59.6GB available and does have the tab that asks if you want to format. I did not click on it since the card is recognized. I even moved some songs on to the card and they played so my question is. Do I need to format the card or is it working straight out of the package like it should? I just don't want to put a bunch of stuff on the card and then find out I need to format it after all. My GF's note 2 did the same thing. I read on a bunch of threads about how the cards didnt work with the stock format and only showed 32GB but mine seems to be OK. Any thoughts?
Note 2 recognizes exfat format, which your sdcard is probably formatted to out of the box since it's a 64GB. So no need to change it to another format. Most older phones don't recognize the format though, so if you're planning to move it to and from another (older) phone you might want to. Otherwise, keep it as it is. The posts you read about people having problems with 64gb micro sd card were probably using a phone that doesn't support exfat format.

BTW is there a way to create folders inside the SD card so when I move my music and pictures to it I know where they are.
sure... you can create them from your phone using the built-in file explorer in your phone (My Files). Go to All files > extSdCard > Press Menu button and choose Create folder.
Or you can connect your phone to your PC and create folders from windows explorer.

I tried doing it on Windows explorer and it would not let me. I will try myfiles on the phone.
Some custom kernels do not support exfat, just letting you know just in case.

External SD card write issue

I'm currently running a rooted GPE G pad with stock 4.4.2 installed and am having an issue writing to the external SD card in both titanium backup and folder mount. In Tibu it says I don't have write permissions when trying to change the backup location to /storage/sdcard1 and folder mount gives me an error as well when trying to write to the same location. Is there some option in 4.4.2 preventing me from writing here or am just doing something completely wrong? I used the same sd card in my rooted Galaxy S4 for both these apps and haven't had any problems.
Sent from my AOKP GS4
I had a very similar issue on the stock 4.2.2 (non-gpe version). Some games were not updating, error 492 if I recall. I could not delete or remove the folder, and certain folders were not allowing me to write to them. I chalked it up to the LG OS just causing damage to the SD card - I formatted it, installed CM11, and haven't had the issue since. I was able to put the MicroSD in the PC and delete the folder/files, but the folder would still appear (reappear/get re-made) when put in the tablet, as it would then show up on the PC.
Not sure what caused it, but I was under the impression it was the stock firmware. Evidently not.
Posted this in another thread, but figured I'd also post here for reference...
I had the same problem; couldn't write, etc although from a PC or installing the same SDCARD in another device worked fine.... called Google Support; no help by the way and after searching/reading for a while determined the problem.
This link explains how to fix... basically Android is not accessing the proper "name" of the external card and you just need to add one line to fix permissions.

Worked perfectly, thanks! I would likely have looked into returning it if I couldn't figure out how to fix that.

Just tried this on Stock LG Rom (V500) and unfortunately it did not resolve my issue updating apps that I have moved to external SD card via Foldermount. I can successfully run apps and write to external SD via titanium backup just can't update apps via play store. Foldermount developer blames LG and is already working to correct in his next version. Was hoping this was the solution. Guess will have to wait for update from dev.

First time I had a SD card get fried on me. Sandisk 64GB SD fails with write protect. Cannot even format on PC.
Could it be the G Pad is frying cards?
Hmm, not sure it's the G Pad. I have also had issues with Sandisk 64GB cards but in Galaxy Tab. I do not think the Sandisk are as reliable as say the Samsung cards. I think this is one of the reasons you can find them so cheap vs. other brands. Picked up 2 more for $34 each on Black Friday. In any case, you may be able to resurrect by using the MiniTool Partition Wizard. I had a card that I was able to fix by deleting all the partitions and recreating. Give it a whirl you have nothing to lose. The desktop tool is free.

I also had issues with Sandisk Ultra 64GB card, works fine with smaller cards. Kept saying card dismounted unexpectedly and Titanium would fail many times during a backup because. I CAN do a nand backup no problem in recovery and works fine in PC so some firmware issue with either 64 GB cards in general or just Sandisk? Same issue only worse if use a custom rom. Was gonna return my pad but once tested other cards realised some 64GB/Sandisk compatibility issue.... I can also recommend mini tool partition wizard

Check SuperSU to ensure the app you're using has been given root access. If you can't edit the file, sounds like you don't have proper permissions.

Give this app a try, I've encountered various problems with different versions of the apps you've mentioned and never had an issue with this one. After install, add the root add-on and you should be good to go.

[Q] Running out of Space, Symlinks and Installing Apps to SDcard

Due to size limitations (GPads only coming in 16gb varieties) I am beginning to run low on space on my Gpad (v500 running cm11). However I have a 64gb microSD card and I would like to use this as much as I can to conserve space on the internal memory.
There are a few ways to solve this but I not fully know how to do this.
Firstly, is it possible install apps to microSD card? If so, how? I know some devices support this and some do not. My phone for example does not but I have heard that some people have had success with this.
Next, there are some rather large folders on my internal storage that I would like move to my sdcard however the apps that use those folder can only read them where they are currently located (cmupdates, ebooks, etc).
I read about symlinks and managed to make a few but the only place I was able to make a symlink was to /data/media/0. But the changes to that do not show up the apps which I believe read either /sdcard or /storage/emulated/0. And for my SDcard I can get to it either in /mnt/media/sdcard1 or through /storage/sdcard1.
I tried and succeeded in making a link between /mnt/media/sdcard1/eBooks and /data/media/0/eBooks however the link does not show up in /sdcard or /storage/emulated/0 and it does not show up in the apps, leading me to believe that is where the apps read the sdcard from.
If anyone can answer the above two questions or give any other suggestions for maximizing available space on my internal card please let me know.
Thank you!
I think most of your issues could be resolved with Link2SD (under 10 posts, can't post a link to Google Play).
You can also use an app called Foldermount. It's only $.99 ( if I recall correctly) for the unlocked version. This allows you to move any folder to SD card. I like it as it guides you thru the way and will move the data for you as well. Latest version has been updated to allow apps from play store to install properly. Well worth the $1 price.

Can you let me know if this works for you? I can't get mine to read or write my SD card at all! I can't even move a picture from my Box cloud account to the SD card. Are you experiencing this? Or did I get a bad unit?

These solutions did work for me, I am still tweaking to get it the way I like it especially since every time I update my Rom Link2SD has to generate new scripts. I can ready and write to the SD card just fine and I could before I started using this as well. I am not sure why you aren't able to write to your sd card. Could it be a bad SD card? Try plugging it into your computer.
I've tried 2 different SD cards both of which I can move files to and from on my computer. So I know it's not the card. I'm thinking maybe I should exchange it out for another day one...

I'm not sure I just put the card in my computer and clicked format SD card. I'm not rooted or running any special ROM, it's completely stock out've the box.
Well, if you did it from your PC, it may be formatted NTFS, and you need them formatted FAT 32. Get it here; http://www.partitionwizard.com/free-partition-manager.html Not only allows formatting almost any format xFAT, Fat32, NTFS, etc.. and you can partition them also which is not supported by Windows, but IS supported by most Android ROMs. I doubt there is anything wrong with your device.

I have been trying to fix the issue with Rom updates and link2sd. You have to provide the Rom (in my case cyanogenmod) a backup script so it can back up the files. I am planning on figuring it out at some point but if you get it before I do would you mind posting your script? Thanks!

So a follow up with this, I was able to get a script working. I don't know if this feature is unique to cyanogenmod or not but any script in /system/addon.d will execute itself during a rom install and be restored automatically if it was wiped. So using 50-cm.sh as an example I made a script called 11-link2sd.sh to perform the backup of the mount script for link2sd which is located in /system/etc/init.d/11link2sd.
I then had insert this script and my mount script into a cyanogenmod update and flash it in. But after that I tried flashing an update of cm11 to test it and it worked! Attached is my script which should also work for anyone who is able to flash it into their /system/addon.d folder.

[Q] External SD Card Read-Only Problem

I tried researching this but wasn't successful finding same exact problem or solution. I'm on 4.4.2 Baseband N900TUVUCNB4 rooted with stock rom and ext sd fix. Everything was working fine until recently. My external SD card has inexplicably become read-only, both on the phone and on my desktop. I first noticed this last week when the phone camera began having problems writing to external SD card, and now I can't sync music to card. I've tried formatting on the phone and desktop, both quick and full but no dice. On the phone, I am able to delete individual files or folders but they reappear. On the PC, I can view but get write protect message when trying to format. Anyone else come across this or have suggestions?

Happened with me once with a different phone/OS. Weird thing is that it was only for a particular SD card. I put a different card and it worked.
It turned out to be a problem with the card (dunno how thats possible though).
What's the brand of your SD card?
I have the exact same problem with my SGNote 2 and SanDisk 64gb micro SD card. First I lost some pics I have taken that day. I searched through with a file rescue tool but they were nowhere to be found. Deleted files reappear, and the ones I copied from internal SD dissappear.

It's a SanDisk 64gb class 10.
Glad to hear I'm not the only one. Maybe we can share the solution when we find one. I'm using internal memory in the meantime for new media files, but frustrated that I am not able to use the rest of the memory available on my card.
SanDisk works fine for me, maybe your sd card is a faulty one, let's wait for a while here and maybe someone could answer your question and hopefully solve your problem

Thanks, Lorettaa. It seems like that's the only option right now, since I can't find any other info about it on XDA. I know Kit Kat has that design "flaw" where apps can't write to an SD card, but I can't even write to it, modify it or reformat it on a PC. I have full read access to every file, just can't do anything else

I have the exact same problem, i tried many options , used some softwares in windows to format , wipe, fix, modify. nothing works.
One possible reason for this problem is file system errors , which can be rectified using the 'error checking' option in windows and 'fixing the file system errors'
But that doesnt solve my problem, even after formatting using advanced softwares, the sd card is the same - no files deleted, no files added...
The fat as well as ext4 parition is not formattable now in anyway.so the possible conclusion is 'sd card is going to fail'.. Take a backup before you loose the read capability.
Recuva is a good, free tool (from the people that make CCleaner) to deleted recover photos.

And one possible reason for a false error condition is a corrupt system. This is normally an unlikely possibility but it is very likely on devices that have had partition images written to (i.e. a flashed ROM). If you have done all you can to the SD card and if the errors are not only on one SD card then wipe everything and load a backup. If you still get errors then wipe everything and revert to stock to see if they still occur.

Movies not saving on SD Card.

Hello folks, I bought my M8 3 weeks ago and it is rooted, unlocked bootloader, latest TWRP, stock sense ROM and elemental x kernel. I initially purchased a 32gb Samsung evo sd card but found myself maxing it within a few days with movies, then i bought a 64gb Samsung evo sd card and assumed all was well. I formatted the card and ran the external sd card patch app from the playstore which granted me write permission to the sd card (it is not possible on stock htc kernel but ss soon ss i flashed elementalx kernel it allowed me to write any data to the sd card).
But the problem is whenever i download a movie via utorrent and set the download path to the sd card, it downloads fine, but when i use my file explorer to check the sd card movie download folder, it shows the movie folder name but when i open the folder there is nothing inside or someimes it doesn't even show the movie folder at all, almost as if it was never even downloaded but if i switch back to utorrent, the movie is 100% downloaded and is uploading.
Sometimes, it actually downloads and i can see the movie in the folder, but when i click on the movir, it says 'Sorry unable to play thid file'. I have use astro file manager and es file manager, i have used diceplayer, mx player sand bs player. I don't think the file manager or the the media player is the problem. When i open settings and go to make more space, 10gb of my sd storage is being taken by these files but they are nowhere to be found on my sd card storage using a file manager. But i know these movies are on the sd card because it is taking up gigabytes of space.
I've tried to reformat the sd card, factory reset the phone e.t.c. but i am still having the ssme issue. Any help would be greatly appreciated, thanks.
Can any other apps write to the card? I'd also get myself a copy of root explorer. Have you tried searching for the files in question. They may not be in the folder you think they are.
Also the stock kernel does support sd card write access with patch. Might have to be s-off though.
What formats are the movies in? Try to copy a movie with a format you know works in and then do one with another format and check. I know certain formats don't work with HTC.
I'd also try and see if other movie watching apps can read it. If you don't mine me asking, when you formatted the card what did you format it too?

Some are in mp4 and some are in matroska (mkv). I have already tried that and it didn't work before. I have tried diceplayer, bs player, mxplayer and the default htc player. The card was formatted on my htc one m8.

Yes, i know the stock kernel does not support it. Which was why i wrote in the op that i flashed elemental x before performing a successful write access patch.
Other apps can write to the card, i played the respawnables from the sd card, i can copy pictures and my nandroid backup. It's just my movies that sometimes copies into a folder which is empty inside or it full copies and then when i try to play, it shows me a sorry cannot play video file error on all the movie players i have tried from the playstore.

Have you noticed one working more then the other? or do they both not show up. My suggestion is your reformat the sdcard on your computer instead of through your phone to be fully compatible with the movie files. I have an external 64gb and I have no issues. I formatted it through the computer though.
Also, try to restart your phone and check for the files, or using a different file explorer.
Nope. You didn't read my reply properly. The stock kernel DOES support sd card write access with patch.

I understand that, but a 32gb sdcard is quite different then 64gb sdcard with the way its formatted and that's what I am worried about.
I'm using a samsung 64gb evo card no problems. Why not try a different torrent app. I prefer the kickass torrents app as it has more options and allows you to open the download folder direct from the app.

That is exactly what i'm using. A samsung evo 64gb. I will attempt to reformat it on a pc tomorrow.
I tried to grant write permission on the stock htc kernel but it didn't work with the 2 apps i found on the playstore. But it worked instantly with elemental x kernel.
Shall i reformat it on the pc with the memory card still inside the phone?
I'm guessing it's due to the file sizes. When the card is formatted as fat32 it has its file size limits.
Check some more on that note to get some specific info. Just a hunch

Which software on windows would you recommend that I use to format the Samsung Evo 64gb SD Card and which format would you also recommend?

I wouldn't recommend doing that no, if possible take it out of your phone and use an adapter to connect it to your computer. You want a direct connection to the sdcard.

I have an adapter, which format is your SD card in? I have formatted to FAT32 and when I transfer my movie files, some of it is lost in the LOST.DIR folder which I can't recover.

Yeah you don't want to format to FAT32 thats for 32gb cards and below. For a 64gb you want to format it to exFAT. Thats how mine is formatted, and how it should come honestly. After that you shouldn't have any issues reading and running your movie files. According to this article video files over 4gb cannot be accessed which would be your issue with the files on a FAT32.
http://forums.androidcentral.com/ht...nnot-handle-video-files-greater-than-4gb.html
so that could be your issue as well.

It initially was in exFAT format when i formatted it on the phone but I still had the problems of files either not copying or not playing or being lost in he LOST.DIR folder, I am running a format on windows now and will give it another try.

Okay, I edited my reply. Added a few things so I'd take a look at that thread I posted as well, it might have your solution.
Try copying over the movie files to internal and see if they run.

I have come across that thread before making this thread. The SD Card was initially in exFAT format but when the issues arose I formatted it to FAT32 and now I have reformated it using windows to exFAT. I'm copying the movie files now and will see what happens.
My movies are all 1080p but below 2gb file size, I have copied the movies to my limited internal storage and they work perfectly file. It is simply when I copy them to the SD Card that they become lost within the LOST.DIR or they copy and i get the Sorry cannont play video file error with any media player I download from the playstore.

This issue seems strange to me. I also have a 64gb card, formatted to fat32. I have no problems at all moving uTorrented movies from my downloads folder to extSD (I have a movie folder on ext, but I download to internal). Maybe try ES File Explorer to move them. That's what I'm using.

Last night i fornatted to exFAT on windows using my sd card adapter, then i mounted it and downloaded 5 torrent movies directly to the sd card. I woke up this morning and discovered that the folder where those torrent movies were downloaded was empty. But somehow the movies are on the sd card and taking up space, but i iust can't find them.
When i download the torrent movies to the internal memory, it is fine, when i copy the torented file from internal to sd card, it is also fine. But it just seems impossible to download torrents directly to the sd card and bypass the copy from internal to external always procedure.
I will try FAT32 format on windows and download torrenrs directly to the sd card, i am hoping this will work as i am very tired of this issue. I invested a lot of money on this phone and this 64b samsung evo and i am so far not impressed.
Also in the op, i mentioned that i have tried astro and es file manager. But thanks.
