Well which xperia play is it? Is it R800x, R800a, R800at, R800i. If you have the international xperia play it is a GSM xperia play and it should work with your GSM carriers. Are you sure you dont have the CDMA xperia play? Otherwise more info would be appreciated and no you cant change frequencies that are made by the manufacturer.

Seems you may have a R800x. That version only works with CDMA networks and was exclusively for Verizon.
Other international versions should work fine in GSM networks.

The phone itself shows r800i - it has a slot for a sim under my memory card space.
It is not accepting anything...
Am i in luck at all?

R800i should work with your local gsm carriers by inserting the slim card. Otherwise i think your sim slot is locked to a specific gsm carrier. You have to pay for a service to unlock your sim slot. But if you do have a cdma you cant change it to gsm.

R800x is the CDMA Verizon Wireless USA variant, and is currently unrootable, but runs stock vanilla Android.
R800i is the original GSM variant sold over in Europe and the UK.
I'm not entirely sure about the R800a, my brain is giving me conflicting stories about Taiwan/Singapore, and Canada Rogers versions.... I could be ENTIRELY wrong on that though.
One is for verizon, one is for some other US network and the R800I is for the rest of the world i think
Models so far?;
r800i (uk, europe, australia, new zealand, asia?)
r800a (canada rogers, mexico + also asia?)
r800at (usa at&t)
r800x (usa verizon)
Z1i (china?)
They all have the same specs internal memory, processor e.t.c
In Mexico we get r800a too. With all the sony experience.
So the models depend on the location or the providers.

Both. In the case of U.S.A you guys get R800x for Verizon and R800at for At&T

I would say model depends on providers since anyone using gsm is likely to get the R800i or R800a anyone using cdma is gonna get the R800x or R800at.
The only difference in GSM and CDMA is gsm phones have a simcard, CDMA phones dont have simcards your account information is programmed onto your phone. Dunno if the CDMA xperia plays have R-UIM cards though? CDMA is supposed have have faster data transfer speeds (internet) up to 700kbps (EVDO). Gsm is roughly 400+kbps (HSDPA)
Gsm is world wide and CDMA is mainly usa and some parts of asia
I thought there was a dev model as well whats that one called?
Saw someone talking about it somewhere

The only difference between the R800a and R800i is the HSDPA radio frequency set. You can buy both in Australia as both frequency sets are in use by various carriers.
R800i works on 900MHz and 2100MHz
R800a works on 800MHz 850MHz, 1900MHz and 2100MHz
Firmware images are compatible between R800i and R800a.
Both are incompatible with R800x as far as I know.
I don't know about the R800at.

R800at isn't CDMA (its another GSM Variant). Interestingly, although it seems to do nothing and has a plastic bit inserted in the way, the CDMA (R800x) version does have a sim-card slot, and if you go into some of the diag screens, you can turn on GSM... I haven't tried getting a prepaid sim to see if it works though. So the R800x might just have both if we are lucky, however I doubt its fully enabled in the kernel level.
R800i is also Oceania ( AUS/NZ )

Thanks for the info. I was sure R800i & R800a are GSM and i knew R800x was CDMA wasnt sure about r800at so i just presumed it was CDMA as well
I cannot remember the post but i think someone has tried a sim card in the r800x and said that it has been fully disabled.
I'm in Singapore, R800i's here as well - nice thing about buying a phone here, all are carrier unlocked / government considers it illegal [monopoly] for carriers to sign exclusive deals... although I might get caned for exporting them.
Same here. No companies should be allowed to lock phones to their networks.
However some companies have been cheeky and released different phones that don't support the other carriers cell tower transmission.
I can confirm the R800at is the AT&T version. It even has the AT&T boot animation and comes loaded with 2.3.3.
I got mine in the mail today off ebay. So far, I am really enjoying it. I get H+ as my connection icon, and which is different.

You can root the Verizon model. If it is on anything higher than 2.3.3 you just have to flashtool back to 2.3.3 and then run super one click.

Im aussie too and the 800i is/was sold here for the optus/vodaphone network. You can use the 800i on telstra but you can only get 2g, no 3g goodness due to the frequencys used.

Strange Problems R800at

This is a very short question.
I have the Xperia Play. It's blue. It's AT&T branded.
HOWEVER...
It has the r800at firmware. I assume this means I can't unlock the bootloader.
But I thought AT&T=GSM, Verizon=CDMA.
Does the AT&T version have a CDMA radio? I'm really confused.
Sorry, I just got this phone today and I don't really know what I'm doing. Thanks!
Also, for whatever reason, I can't get a connection to the AT&T network. The phone app sees my sim's contacts, but I still get a "No Sim Card" error. Wut.
no gsm radio on that one, only verizon one r800x is cdma, also maybe is not sim unlocked so cant read your sim if isnt an att one
Ok... so It's the GSM version? Then why can't it register on the network with my AT&T sim, I wonder? Strange...
Edit: I wonder if it's the wrong firmware...
Edit2: When I search for networks, it finds 2 AT&T networks (a 3g and a 2g) and a Tmobile network. After getting a "Your sim does not allow a connection to this network" error for all 3, I clicked "Select automatically" and got
"Registered on network." (It successfully registered on automatic again)
But STILL no network access and a No SIM error. What der heck?!
Edit3: After installing the IT ROM, my model number is now listed as an "R800x".
IT-Rom is a CDMA ROM, and the build.prop reflects this. Install a GSM ROM.
Well I just took off the battery and looked at the sticker on the main board, it says r800at. I would definitely brick my device if I installed a gsm rom... right?

If you have a Sim card, your phone is GSM, not CDMA. So you want to avoid roms that are for the R800x like the one you chose.
If this is an AT&T phone and you have a valid sim card, why don't you call AT&T and see if they can help you?
Sent from my R800x using XDA
Let's see.
Your R800at device has a GSM radio, but your bootloader is blocked, because your device is branded, and sim-locked. There's no way you can get an R800at sim-unlocked.
You should flash only GSM roms (that is, anything except R800x roms) and then check their compatibility with your phone's radio (remember that although AT&T uses GSM, it uses a different band than the rest of the world).
Restore your phone, and read things again. Or unlock your bootloader with the paid method.
Ah! Thanks guys! Well... no wonder my wifi isn't working. And maybe that's why my radio hasn't been either, we shall see. As for the roms, what can I install? I haven't found any for a locked gsm version...
Edit: Ignore the derping above. I found one within like 5 seconds of looking.
Edit2: Also looks like I'm going to have to adb push the cwm auto installer. D'oh!

Where did you get the idea that R800at = CDMA? It's always been the AT&T GSM HSPA+ model. There is no contradiction.

Dude, it's like I said. I barely know anything about this phone... just be glad I'm not asking questions like "what is an adb" and "how do I install it on my phone!!?" lol.
Also, is the r800a firmware for cdma or gsm devices? Because that's what my phone had on it when I got it from the dude.

As stated above many times,
the R800x is the ONLY CDMA Xperia Play.
All others, R800a/i/at are GSM.
R800x is the absolute only CDMA Xperia Play there is. If there's any letter other than "x" at the end of R800, it's GSM.
Edit: Leraenish beat me to it.
Ok, installed a GSM rom. Still "no sim card" error.
Whoever said the r800at cannot be sim unlocked that is not true. I unlocked my bootloader and my sim. Have even tested it with a friend's thru tmobile now.

He meant it's impossible for an AT&T model to be sim unlocked when you just took it out of the box.
It is possible to get it unlocked later on though.
Actually if you unlock the bootloader it sim unlocks it too. Right out of the box but you do have to pay.

Then what he means is that they do not sell new unlocked R800at phones and that you must unlock it yourself through a service.

CDMA does not use a sim card like what GSM uses. I have heard that you can flash the R800x CDMA PLAY to work with another carrier but who that carrier is I dont know... To my knowledge the only other national carrier thats CDMA is Sprint but I cant find anything for flashing the PLAY to sprint as from what I have also read, neither Verizon or Sprint will take a phone unless its ID number is in their database

If you can't find a CDMA company try exchanging it on Craigslist or some online exchange service?
I'm using r800x in India with a different carrier. After carrier/sim unlocking, all you have to do is put in the NVdump file generated based on ur MEID and MIN number (this file is provided by the MEID vendor) and new carrier prl file(google) using CDMA workshop software. This goes for any unlocked CDMA phone, not just the r800x.

Check out PagePlus. They use Verizon's network, and if you don't need tons of data, they are a FANTASTIC bargain.
Example: 250 min/ 250 text $12, no extra fees.
Cricket n boost mobile.. cricket ithink is 55 with unlimited everything and boost mobile is $55 too unlimtrd everything but once u go 6 months with on time bill payments your bill drops $5, this contiunes on till u only pay $45. Also both are no contract, not sure tho if boost mobioe accepts other carriers phones cricket for sure does!!

You can take a back-up as a NAM file before making any changes.
Bought my R800x from Alltel, it doesn't have the verizon bloatware or brand label on the phone. Straight Talk and Net Ten have a BYOP option for CDMA phones for about $60/65 right now at Walmart. I imagine that it will carry over as it's not at 4G-LTE phone, but its quick to it out at the straight talk/net-ten websites.
My friends dad did this with a droid x and everything went fine so I imagine that it would for our phones too

Yes, you can use it with TATA cdma provided you can register the phone's MEID with TATA and you have the NV configuration for call and data for TATA cdma.(Google it). Also, I'm willing to sell my mobile for a good price since i paid for lot of stuff like extra battery+bootloader unlock etc.

xperia play cdma can be used whith sim card?

Hi there I got an xperia play from my brother he lives in the u.s.a and the provider is virizon and also is a cdma phone, now I live in guatemala latin america, and here we use gsm technolgy with sim cards, now is any way that I can erase all the verizon crap, and make the phone works with the sim card,, the phone also has the sim card slot in the back. So my question is if there possible to make the cdma phone working with the sim card. thanks.

I believe this is a Cspire phone. Cspire is a CDMA network, so I doubt it could be used with a GSM sim.
Edit: After further research, it seems it's used on more than one smaller network. I saw one google entry indicating that Illinois Valley Cellular (?) also uses this model.
anyone know how to flash stock or root this model???
It's also used in Ntelos and Frawg
