Samsung Cases! I think i got it! - Galaxy S III Accessories

After reading thru so many different threads and opinions I've come to the conclusion that I want a pretty sturdy case. I've come to realization that regardless of which case I'm going to get, it's going to be a bit bulky but that' because of the purpose of the case.
What I want out of a case:
1. Good protection
- having the phone on my lap, i get up, it falls and i accidently kick it (happens to me all the time, with every single phone that i've
owned, even with phones i didn't own :victory
2. I wanted a kick stand but from what everyone is saying the seidio active case attracts lint to easy and the casemate stand is too flimsy,
so i'm staying away from those. However, if someone can refer me to a stand/cradle that will be great. I don't need it to be a charging
station, I just want something that will prop it up horizontally so that I can continue to game on my PC while video conferencing with
people or watching HBOgo, I DO NOT WANT A STAND THAT WILL PROP MY PHONE IN PORTRAIT MODE.
With that being said, I've nailed it down to either the Otterbox Commuter or Ballistic SG.
Galaxy S3 dimensions are as follows
136.6mm x 70.6mm x 8.6mm
The Otterbox Commuter gives an overall dimension of
142.5mm x 78.84mm x 14.28 mm
The Ballistic SG give an overall dimension of
141.5mm x 76.5mm x 14mm
This is all based on reviews from people that go thru cases daily on youtube, or people that make money by doing this stuff and all companies send them cases to review. So with that being said, I want to pull the trigger on the Ballistic SG because it offers the same protection, looks simple enough for me (as does the otterbox), however is less bulkier of the two. Feel free to chime in with thoughts, knowledge, and opinion on these (2) cases also on any stands/cradles you guys may know of.
Thanks community.

Mini Case review of 5 popular cases

I am not an official tech reviewer, just some dude with an EVO that has tried out several of the popular cases out there, and will offer my opinion for whatever that is worth.
- Body Glove; http://www.htcphones.net/body-glove-snap-on-case-for-htc-evo-4g/
Picked up the day I bought the EVO last Summer. Case looked bad ass in the package, but sucked balls, very cold and hard feeling next to the face, and cracks. Worst case
- Otterbox Impact; http://www.otterbox.com/HTC-EVO-Imp...-EVO4G_color=20&start=3&cgid=htc-evo-4g-cases
It feels great in the hand, and offered great protection, but was just too thick and bulky for my tastes, and sticky feeling, bad for pockets. Good case, just too big
- Otterbox Commuter; http://www.otterbox.com/HTC-EVO-Com...-EVO4G_color=20&start=2&cgid=htc-evo-4g-cases
Got as a gift, nice case, but too slick in the back, the hard plastic finish is too slippery, and again a little bulky for me. Ok case, just too slick and thick.
- Case-Mate Tough; http://www.case-mate.com/HTC-EVO-4G-Cases/Case-Mate-HTC-EVO-4G-Tough-Cases.asp
This case is very nice, two piece design, offers great protection. My little kids did the testing, and it works, sailing off the counter top onto the hardwood floor lots of times, with zero issues And the back rubber feel of it is soooooo nice in the hand, perfect grip. But again a little thick to be putting in jeans and soon shorts for Summer, will stick out too much, and scare the ladies. But this case is a keeper for riding my Mountain Bike, or going to carnival rides. Great case, keeping this.
- Incipio Edge; http://www.myincipio.com/HTC-EVO-4G-Cases-Accessories/Incipio-HTC-EVO-4G-EDGE-Hard-Shell-Case.asp
This is the slimmest of all cases I have had, and I actually like that a lot. I like thin phones, not bricks, and the other cases while nice, were just way too big, making the EVO feel much larger than it already is. The Edge is slim, nice color, and fits in pockets effortlessly. Great case, keeping this.
Out of all the cases I have tried, the "Edge" is my fav, with the Case-mate Tough a very close second. But I have not tried out the Seidio Innocase II yet, how is that ? http://www.seidioonline.com/product-p/csr3hev4-wh.htm
You forgot to mention that the silicon for the Otterbox Commuter becomes loose like all other silicone cases and the thin part near the bottom face of the phone looks hideous after it becomes loose and there is no fix for it that I know of.
Each Otterbox case made for this phone has its own special problems and I think Otterbox rushed the design but yet the cases for the Iphone are flawless and look a hell of a lot better. I don't recommend Otterbox to anyone with and Evo at this point unless they change something.

Sure you can send it back for a new silicone piece but paying shipping every two or three months is not cool.

you are wrong about the shipping you dont pay one red cent. ive had several otterboxes for ever phone ive had and all ive ever had to do was make a 5 minute max phone call or an email and i get whatever i need in 2-3 days in the mail, Ive never had to send anything back. its so easy its ridicules. as a matter of fact i just called and told em i didn't like the defender case because the kick stand was just too thin(i agree with u on that point that kickstand is horrible thin as a reed) they sent me another defender to replace the broken stand and sent me a commuter case for free. All of this cost me nothing but the time to make the call.
Fact of the matter is if you want a serious case thats gonna give your phone maximum protection any case whether its otterbox ,titan, seido all of em r bulky when you want max protection. its a bit of a trade off as i see it, yea its bulky but my phone looks brand new indefinitely.
Check out trident cyclops, i've always been a big fan of them.

You are correct sir, for some reason unknown I was thinking about Zagg and they make you pay for a return. Just got off the phone with Otterbox and they are shipping me a new commuter case, took all of 5 minutes.

dam it...I just saw this post after I already put the order in...maybe they'll be nice enough and let me attach the 10% off if I call it in now...
I preordered through Cellularaccessory.com for $58.
Just confirmed with their sales on the phone that they will ship from their warehouse on 6/14.
I remember there is a free shipping code floating around somewhere too.
So if you can wait a few days more, you can save a nice $30 less tax with these guys.
just gave otterbox a call...gave the sales rep the promocode and was able to get the 10% off and because their computers are down at the moment he gave me an additional 10%...
can't wait to get this in and on the XOOM...

There are videos of the bb and ipad.
But honestly, what's ur alternative?
Almost 100 bucks? Now I need a case to protect my Otterbox.
i have one of this case from Kevikev http://kevikev.com/addtocart.sc it only cost be abot $35 back when i got it. believe it or not it is a lot more of a professional looking case and very stylish. i can walk into work with it, or even church. with the otterbox case i'll look like a construction worker. or someone who work with a lot of kids and don't want my xoom to damage. and honestly i don't see the extra protection in the otterbox case. cuz i won't be droping my xoom anytime soon. and so the case is mainly to serve as a stand and a jacket for the device. not a bullet proof.
i also just came across this from the walmart site. it actually look similar to otterbox, obviously not as strong from the looks of it, but design wise it is very similar without the hard screen cover/stand for the otterbox. check it out, if i do seem to find more information on it, i'll give it a try, they also do a free site to store, so yo can pick it up at your local walmart for free. and it only cost $14. maybe a couple dollars extra for tax. http://www.walmart.com/ip/Amzer-Transparent-Jelly-Case-for-Motorola-XOOM-Black/16539974

If you're fine with putting a $600+ tablet in a standard folio case just because you're worried about what people with think when they see you with it, then have at it. Personally I want a case to PROTECT my device and I don't care what other people think about it's appearance. It's known that the otterbox cases add a little bit to the size, but the protection they are known to afford the devices make up for that.
I had a standard plastic shell case on my phone and after I dropped it onto asphalt getting into my truck one day it broke apart. The phone was undamaged so I was lucky. I got an otterbox case after that and I don't freak out now if I drop the phone (which I have a few times) because I know it's not going to get damaged. I have the standard motorola folio case and have been waiting for this one to come out so I can stop worrying about dropping my xoom. I'm not going to buy it from otterbox though because I know I can get it cheaper elsewhere.
The one from walmart is just a silicone case. The otterbox is a polycarbonate shell with a silicone case around it. BIG difference there in the protection. Even in the name is says "transparent JELLY case".

i obviously bought my case becasue i like it. not becasue someone said to buy it. you seem to have miss the point. by stating that the case is a professional and stylish case was my opinion based on my needs. and for my job, the otterbox case is just not going to cut it, also my opinion. and FYI, the cases i have do "PROTECT"t my device so it wouldn't matter what people say including you. my point that the case will me look like a construction worker, was also my opinion. becasue it goes to fact that if i work consruction i would want the extra protection. i don't drop my xoom, like you have. so the extra wight and looks is not my style.
otterbox cases was made for folks who want maxumum protection, i for one had an otterbox case when i had an iphone. it was worth it then, becasue i could drop my phone often. but my XOOM will not be tasting the floor anythime soon, becasue i am very carefull with it. unlike a phone i have no reason to have it on my lap when driving and will never forget it's on my lap before i get out of the car, i have made that mistake with my phone several time.
as for the case on walmart, i was just giving an alternative for a cheaper case for those who will want otterbox but can't spend that much. that's why it's cal;l alternative. it cost less, and it will obviously not be the same as the otterbox case. as i said in that post it looks similar in design, but obviously not the same strenght. otterbox do have their customer market, like you. which is not a bad thing, it's just not a one size fit all. some people like me don't have the need for an otterbox case, because i also bought my xoom the looks. i like how it feels and it's design. so i want to enjoy that.
that's why i laught when i see people with the ipad2, saying it is so light and thin, but they have it cover in an otterbox case that makes it looks and feels like the original ipad.to me it;s like why did you buy it based on how thin it was, only to put it ina bullet proof jacket. and i mean let;s face it, a couple yes from now, when there is a xoom 2 or even xoom 3, you know you'll be wanting to get that one as well. and will likey pass this on to someone or sell it. technology is leap year ahead. so there will always be the next generation product.
otterbox did build a name for themselve with good quality product. it was popular with alot of people, mostly teenager, who don't want their summer paycheck to go in breeze with one drop. so ennjoy your otterbox case my friend, i was just stating my opinion, i wasn't dogging otterbox. it's just not a one size fit all. and some people like me bought my xoom for the look as well as the brain. and looks does matter in the tech world. that's why everyone want to make the pretty phones, thin, big screen, shiney cover, and all tht good stuff.
i bet you won't be buying a old IBM laptop over an HP or Apple. cuz you want the pretty choice not the big and bulky IBM. you want the thin and lightweight next generation laptop. same thing with cars and just about everything else. so let's face it looks matters. and it's not about how others view it, it's about how you will like it, cuz you the one that's gonna spend the most time with it.

Your exact words were "i can walk into work with it, or even church. with the otterbox case i'll look like a construction worker. or someone who work with a lot of kids and don't want my xoom to damage". That says you don't want it because it will make you LOOK "like a construction worker" to your coworkers and church members. If you don't care, then it shouldn't matter.

I never said I dropped my Xoom. I've dropped my cell phone and there have been times where I've worried about dropping my Xoom, but I have never ACTUALLY dropped it. My point is that if it offers more protection I could care less if other people (including yourself) think it would make me look like a "construction worker". I've never received those opinions about my phone and I doubt anyone would make the same opinion about my Xoom were it in an otterbox. Now, if it had bright yellow markings on it and was much heftier than it is, I could see someone saying it looked like it belonged on a construction site.

I don't see how something that is completely different from the otterbox would be an alternative to it. That's like saying any other case out there on the market is an alternative to the otterbox. Sure they may be alternatives to "cases" in general, but they're not good alternatives to the otterbox unless they are similar in design. Now if you linked to a cheaper shell case with a silicone outer case instead of just a simple silicone case, there would be no argument that it would be an alternative to the otterbox.
otterbox do have their customer market, like you. which is not a bad thing, it's just not a one size fit all. some people like me don't have the need for an otterbox case, because i also bought my xoom the looks. i like how it feels and it's design. so i want to enjoy that.

Which is the same reason someone buys an iPad. I bought mine for function over form. You can take a piece of **** and put a pretty bow on it and it's still going to be a piece of ****. The Xoom, on the other hand, is a pretty slick device inside and out so even if you buy it because of "the looks" then you're still getting a good device.

Actually I wouldn't buy any of those, but I wouldn't buy an "old" anything. I would never consider buying an apple laptop because they charge too much for what you actually get, and I have never really liked hp laptops. Even IBM knows that lighter is better because laptops are more portable as ever these days and with competition between laptops/netbooks/tablets they have to keep up. Their new lenovo laptops aren't the big ol bricks they used to be. I buy for the purpose I need it for. If I'm going to have a laptop I never take away from the house I would go for something like an alienware or XPS system that aren't the lightest things in the world, but they're powerful. When I was in the military I had a panasonic toughbook and loved it. Damn thing was almost bulletproof just on it's own. I would prefer to have the whole package of form AND function, but if I had to choose between an old datsun 280Z that ran like a dream and a brand new nissan Z that could barely go into gear/had no stereo/transmission falling apart I would go for the 280z that ran. I will choose function over form any day as long as it gets the job done.
My last post was a little off topic, so to be a litter more ON-topic XD if they sold a commuter case as well I would be all over it. For anyone that doesn't know the difference, the commuter case has the silicone around the device and the poly shell on the outside instead of the other way around with the defender. It seems like the commuter cases are only made for phones though.
lol..you are such a fun guy to chat with. you broke it all down. which i like. however to all your point as stated it is simply opinion. by me saying i can walk into work or church is my opinion. and i'll say this otterbox on a phone doesn't look bad, becasue of the form factor. it is small and not as obvious as it would be on a xoom. that's why i can quickly pick u when someone has an ipad2 with the bullet proof jacket on. and so you might not have gotten the construction worker comment, becasue people wont say that to you, especially after when they don't know the device you have. ie. i have had aye people as me if my xoom was the ipad. the look on my face usually answer the question.
but i'll tell you man, when i see the otterbox on a tablet (so far only the ipad i've seen) it reminds me of constructon worker doing survey in the field, and that's just a picture in my head, which i not a bad thing i should say. there is nothing agains construction worker. it could easily be one of those at&t workers on a poll connecting telephone wires, or a comcast cable guy doing connection test. those are the target market for otterbox. not that they don't appreciate you the regular folk buying their product. but they are targetting a different market with those bullet proof jacket.
Otterbox
Got my otterbox for xoom and installed it:
Pros:
Great protection
can dock without removing case
access to power button with and without outtershell attached.
well built
can power without removing from case
ports are wellsealed
Cons:
the outer shell design adds too much thickness via excess space (see comparison pic between iPad I and Xoom Otterbox case.
Outer shell squishy due to excess space.(poor design)
1st pic outer shell on Xoom. So much space you can see through it
2d pic outer shell on iPad nice and sleek (looks good)
3rd pic side by side comparison

Any ideas how you would redesign it to remove the excess space? I'm assuming that space was put there on purpose to accommodate for something else.
i think the space is to prevent any damage to the screen by scratching. because the cover has parts that prop it up to make a stand. that could be a reason. but i don't have one, so i can't be sure. but we'll find out soon.

[Q] Diztronic Case vs. Otterbox Commuter

The Accessories thread seemed to be mostly reviews, so I'm putting my question here, hopefully it's not in the wrong place
I use the Galaxy Nexus LTE with Extended Battery generally, although sometimes I have long work days/spend extended time outside/heavy use, so I replace the battery with the original to keep the phone going.
I got the Otterbox Commuter case for $40+ (and it went on sale on Amazon the week after), and am fairly happy with it, although it is a pain to take off and put back on when switching batteries. My large hand grips it well and although the feel of the power/volume rocker isn't convincing, it does respond when pressed normally. The fact that the screen protector that came with it only fits over the screen portion is irritating and causes dust to gather on the edges.
So my two questions are:
1. Is the two shell design of Commuter case much more protective than the Diztronic? http://www.amazon.com/Diztronic-Fle...=UTF8&qid=1324672504&sr=1-1&tag=5336653508-20
2. Is it a good idea to just get the Diztronic for $10 and use it on days when I don't need as much protection? Or should I just stick with the Otterbox.
Thank you for you input!

My 2 cents:
I don't have experience with a Diztronic, and I don't have a gNexus...but my thoughts are:
1. Otterbox has a proven reputation. They provide incredible coverage and protection. One of (if not) the best.
2. A case is like insurance. God forbid you should drop your $700 (or w/e) phone, do you really want it to be in the care of a $10 case which may or may not be questionable? For me, that would be a negative.
3. If you check other case design reviews, single cases have proven to often fail the drop test.
The 2 shell design of the Commuter is no accident. It's earned it's stripes. I'd stick with the Otterbox, if I were in your shoes...but again, I only have an SGS2.

Otterbox Cases

Looking at the Otterbox case found here.
It seems expensive, but the protection it offers looks good. Can anyone vouch for it?
Can anyone vouch for this case?
Anyone tried these cases out? I am now looking at the Commuter cases.
Otterbox cases are always pretty good. The iPhone ones are top notch. The GNote ones are probably the exact same quality. They are expensive, but worth every penny the first time you drop it.
Didn't even know they had GNote ones yet. Might snag one for myself. Thanks for finding it.
Sent from my GT-N7000 using xda app-developers app
I recently picked up a Commuter case for my Note and it's incredible. Otterbox cases tend to be really sturdy and protective. I had a gel case before I bought the Commuter and it was flimsy and I didn't feel confident in it protecting my device if I should drop it or something. The Otterbox, on the other hand, feels nice and strong and I'm confident in its ability to protect my phone.
The only thing I really don't like about it is how difficult it can be to get off of my Note. I can't fit my phone on my dock without prying the case off, and it's much more difficult to tear the Commuter off my device than it was to remove my flimsy gel case, but I guess that's a testament to its build quality.
I highly recommend it. Otterbox cases are pricey, sure, but they're the best on the market.
I bought the Commuter case about six weeks ago, but I don't like it in combination with the Note. I had than a big, fat and heavy unit in my hand or in my pocket.
That's my subjective opinion that fore I must add that I don't like cases in general. I tried some, but the only one I'm still using is the first one I bought, a Noreve.
Back to the Commuter. I confirm that its difficult to get it off and it's also difficult to clean the display with the case on it, especially near the edges. The hard plastic back could be less slippery. At last, it could have a stand to make it easier to watch movies.
I got the top of the line one. Great!
But now the phone is even bigger.... And its hard to get it in a pocket.

How much bigger does it make the GNote? Was thinking about getting one, but I don't want a brick in my pocket. Thanks.

They are topnotch in quality... but makes it very bulky...
Why did you start a new thread for this topic???
@Brad387
If you had taken the time to search in this Accessory Forum instead of posting 3 times in a half hour, you would have found 1 or 2 threads from several months ago that discussed / reviewed both the Defender and the Commuter. I posted several photos of my commuter.
Search for it!!!

HELP information about different cases

Hi,
I just received my HTC ONE in the mail yesterday and before I go and take the phone out for a night on the town I'd like to get
a case to protect it as best as I could. Unfortunately I'm coming from the HTC HD2 which doesn't have a lot of great cases out
for it so I'm pretty uch at a loss for what I'm looking at. Below are several possibilities of the cases. If anyone has bought any
of the below cases please share your experience. Thanks in advance.

I also seen several other threads about cases and was reading what I could about them but it was so all over the place and a lot
of the cases I have listed was not listed in the thread yet. I know some are generic but I don't mind that as long as it protects
as it should. I also plan to purchase a clear-coat screen protector so that my phone will be covered up quite well.
(I know this might be overkill but coming from someone how has broken a HTC HD2 that has gorilla class I rather be safe then sorry)
Good afternoon bump

Don't have any answers as I don't get my One until the 1st, but I have been stalking the case threads trying to make up my mind. Your list shows options I didn't know existed and makes it even more complicated for me. All of those are in the big and bulky variety that would seem to protect well while totally obscuring the beauty of the phone. Tough decision. Some of them look very cool.
One thing to watch out for is any case that covers the power button will block the infrared blaster used by the remote.
Do you have any favorite you are leaning towards?
You know being honest I was thinking of buying a couple of the generic brand that way I could change up every once in awhile. I want something that'll protect it if it gets dropped but at the same time not bulk it up so much. I know that's a bit of a contradiction. Lol.. I had a Trident case on my Mytouch 4g slide and it protected it quite well but added a lot of extra bulk. That's why I way thinking a off brand might be bulky but maybe they wouldn't use as much material as a name brand, who knows though.

Bump.
I don't want this getting lost in the clutter her on XDA. There are a lot of nice cases I posted and would love any personal info about any of them.

IMO, case-mate tough case and the otterbox defender/commuter series are pretty tough.
All those cases look pretty tough too. You want to be looking at something with a hard shell and a soft shell (inside or outer). The main weakness of a lot of cases imo is the fact that the screen pokes out. If the case has a cover (ie; wallet types or like the defender) or a lot of overall cover that it lifts the phone above the screen, it'll do. The rest of it is aesthetics.
That's a good point that I didn't really think about. I was thinking of getting a clear-coat screen protector for the from screen then the rest keep in a nice case. All of the ones I been leaning towards are the kind with the 2 part design. Some even have 3 part but that really just means it will come with a belt clip, or so it seems. Some of these generic cases look like they would protect so nice that I might buy at least 1 just to tell how well they're built. I mean at $8-$10 the worst thing that could happen is I don't like it. I think what I'm getting at is I'm trying to just talk myself into buying something that's generic since I've always bought oem or high end cases thus far. I'll report back when I have a case in hand.
