Googles latest revision 6 - et4g or nexus? - Samsung Epic 4G Touch

Sorry if this has been brought up before but with Googles latest revision 6, would it be worth getting a nexus over an epic touch 4g? I have been offered a trade of a nexus for my et4g and thought I would check with everyone to see if it would be worth it with the new revision. If the phone is much better now really the only thing that would prolly bother me is that 4g lte will not be in my area for a few months so I would have to stick with sprints crap 3g unless it is better on the nexus. Horrible 3g on my epic.

Latest software? Nope. Ask verizon and nexus nexus owners about how that latest software is going. Latest hardware? Nope. When it was released, it was a mid end device hardware wise.
Biggest l deal breaker should be the network. It seems like you already have wimax 4g. Always use a phone for its network and not network for phone. Even if lte is going to start launching in your market, it's going to be a few towers here or there with random coverage that slowly increases as more sites come online. Sprint lte market launches with 30-40% or even less towers completed.
Ask yourself if you're really willing to wait 6-9 months for lte in most places around you.

Well I am in Austin Texas and apparently we are supposed to be getting it by the end of October or November. The wimax 4g is definitely better than 3g but was just checking if the update makes it much better than the et4g and if 3g was better. On the paranoid thread it said that the update males the nexus pretty much kill every phone out in terms of snappiness and speed so I did not know if anyone had any experience with it. No microsd support but it is 32gb storage so that helps. Better screen so.. just seeing if it was worth it or not for a straight up trade and then I would purchase a quad core when they come out.

Indeed it is a active network vision market but iirc most upgrades are in the Waco region. Don't know if Austin itself is upgraded yet. If nv hasn't reached your city... Speedy nexus or not : you will hate it for slow data speeds.
Ur choice but my warning to you is watch the data speeds especially 3g. Austin market projected completion is the end or q1 2013...

Well one of my techs recently just traded his E4GT for a nexus, and he couldn't be happier. Even with the slightly inferior processor, that thing runs like an entirely different animal with jelly bean on it. It blows our device out of the water in terms of just general UI awesomeness.
Consider this: the nexus 7 posts similar benchmarks to the iPhone 5, and that's with the much hyped but still underwhelming tegra 3. Not to mention being underclocked. Jelly Bean really does make that much of a difference.
Now would I do it? No. But that's just because I'm attached to my devices as if they were my children lol.

I actually have both devices at the moment. A Galaxy Nexus and an Epic Touch, if I had the option to I would trade in for a second galaxy nexus.

No but I wish they did. Someone on craigslist wants to trade.

Think I am going to go to the sprint store near my house and see if I can live with the 3g speeds on the nexus. While it might perform better, I use the internet a lot and I think that would be my bottom line.

You could just turn off 4G on the E4GT................ to see how it is

Apparently the 3g is supposedly a little quicker than the et4g. Dunno if that is true..

Well went and checked out the nexus.. despite the lte that is not out yet, the nexus is no match for a rooted epic touch. Sticking with the et4g.

The sprint Galaxy Nexus will be launched soon, and I was wondering who will be looking to buy this phone. Since the 1st launch specs have mysteriously been pulled it seems there is no official knowledge of whether there will be a 1.5 cpu, or the same specs as the Verizon version. Sprint's newer ad's only show a picture of the phone with vague basic information.
We know that LTE is not rolling out for a while, bu we still bought the EVO 4G. We also know that the LTE band probably will change in the future, but my Photon is still getting Wimax 4G when I am in NYC. I am looking for my 1st Google experience, with a great display, and NFC. I also hope that the antenna, and GPS issues are fixed!
Man can't believe there gonna real ease this phone on sprint I feel bad for anyone that gets it in the phoenix area

I think its pretty safe to assume it will be 1.2ghz.
Google isn't going to want to fragment their baby in that manner.
If I was still on Sprint I would get it. Well I did get it but jumped to Verizon for it. Now I have a great phone on a great network...
Don't know what GPS issues you are talking about either...GPS is totally fine on the device.
As far as radios, seems like there might have been some bad hardware. If your device isn't defective then the radio's are just fine...
I think Sprint's version will have other issues it might face as a first device on a brand new LTE network.
I don't think there will be any LTE issues for it on Sprint. After all, it will be available almost nowhere to be able to have it drop or be unstable. /potshot

Haha...good point
i'm confident that this will be the same exact version as the Verizon CDMA variant. no gpu updates/no 1.5 clock/no LTE. these are always pipe dreamed whenever a carrier releases it after another has had it. Sammy aint puttin in any more into a phone that wont be a top seller anyway. because only 10-15% of the droid population even know what the nexus is. Apple/HTC/MOTO will get those newbie sales.
pretty much buying this phone cuz i love my nexus S 4g, and just looking for a more capable hardware to run ICS
the 3g will suck like it does now/the LTE rollout will be shaky at best/and no wimax to bail out the crappy 3g speeds
My expectations are right where they need to be. I bought the evo 4g on launch day and after that i learned "it is what it is."
but my major buying point of this over the coveted SGSIII is the fact that i KNOW the GN will run the next iteration of android (Jelly Bean?) before any phone that released this generation will. Ive been around long enough to realize that only newer/vanilla phones get the upgrades. (2.2/2.3/4.0) say what you want about the nexus s, but it was first to run ICS officially/unofficially. meanwhile people with the best hardware spec'd phone SGSII/Epic Touch are running BETAs of it at best...
so the GN will still be relevant a year from now. just the nexus s is still relevant to any1 not on verizion or whoever copped the EU version.
Just sad how late its coming out. And even still, LTE will be a joke for the next year at least on Sprint.
I made the mistake of buying the Evo 4G on launch day expecting WiMax to be good. Wouldn't make that mistake again.

4g sucks

Im coming from a bionic where in my bedroom in a certain spot it would get 4g coverage, strong. I also got 4g good coverage in a lot of different places. I was tired of that phone especially since the razr came out and made that bionic outdated. Didnt really wanna go for another moto so I got the galaxy nexus and I love it, better in so many ways to many to go into detail. but the 4g signal sucks. I dont get a good signal in any of the same places that I got with my bionic.
Your best bet is to sell the GN and get an iPhone.
I don't have an LTE version of the Nexus, but a lot of these threads pop up. My understanding is they aren't the best at all, some will argue they are fine, some will agree.
pretty sure thee iphone for verizon doesnt have a 4g signal, it is the iphone 4 or the iphone 4s lol but whatever. I love the GN so far hopefully I can figure something out. besides apple sucks ass android is ftw. never will i go back to the dirty apple.
I suggest trying out different radios. That might help. I can link the thread if you want.

I was being facetious.
The phone picks up the signal well enough, but has a habit of handing itself off too frequently, often down to 3G where it has a habit of staying. Good news is that's a fixable issue. Bad news, is that no one has issued or announced a fix.
Bionic and nexus report LTE signal strength differently.

true 4g sucks
... No problems here.
You suck...
Great when working
While I do agree that 4g LTE coverage is spotty, when you do have a good signal the speed is phenominal!
I measured a 30 Mbps down today, faster than my cable internet at home!
And oddly enough, I get better battery life when on LTE.
However if in low coverage and switching from 3g to 4g, yes battery does go quick.

Sprint has a deal and contract to have WiMAX (which is the 4G flavor the Epic Touch is running), till sometime in 2015 I believe.
I believe WiMax will be alive for at least a couple of years because full roll out of LTE is going to take time. Someone can correct me if I am wrong here but I think WiMax will certainly be here for the 2 years if you bought the phone on contract

Hence, so far in the future that the LTE network is fully rolled out and the Wimax network shut off which will be more than likely, quite past 2015, yes, at that point, the epic 4G touch will be USELESS on the Wimax network. It can't be upgraded to LTE and at that point, it'll be well past it's useful life as a "high end device" anyway, so, won't matter much.
To the OP, by the time you need to worry, you won't have this phone anyway.

Does anyone know why Sprint went with Wimax to begin with? Was it so they could get it up faster and claim to be the first 4g carrier? Or was it sort of like when HD DVD and Blurays came out... weren't sure which was going to be better?

Yes, they wanted to be the first 4G network and Wimax was the easiest to deploy quickly.
Sent from my Epic 4G Touch using Tapatalk.
When sprint chose wimax it was definitely the front runner. It had pretty good financial backing from Google and intel. The problem is that it was never designed to be a mobile technology, it was merely adapted for that purpose. There was a revision (802.16m) that would have given it some legs to compete with lte from a power consumption and mobility standpoint but because Sprint is the only carrier that picked it up, all of the hardware makers stopped investing in mobile aspects of the technology. Effectively that makes it impossible to continue, without the radios being refined wimax would continue to be at a disadvantage to lte in the phone arena.
Sent from my SPH-D710 using xda premium
Sprint also needed to start doing something with its 2.5 GHz spectrum. Those licenses had coverage conditions that the FCC could invoke to take the spectrum from Sprint to sell or give to another entity that would use it. At the time, LTE was not a ready for commercial deployment, but WiMax was.

Listen, Sprint needs to make sure that when the switch is flipped, it goes as smoothly as possible. I can't fault our engineers for wanting to test and test and test, and then test some more. The delays are definitely not due to a lack of towers going up, S4GRU has plenty of evidence of that.
I for one would much rather the anticipation pay off with a good roll out rather than a rushed half-assed one.

I knew wimax was going to fail from the beginning. The high frequency range is total utter shat for large blanketing coverage. LTE should be a little better atleast, and then the 800Mhz network that is rolling out should be amazing. A nice large blanket for most areas.

Wimax was built by Clearwire, not Sprint.
I'm looking forward to hopefully improved building signal penetration with 800 band. It still might suck in elevators and buildings with lots of steel infrastructure.
I just hope its a consistent signal and we get to enjoy a call without the auto tune filter from the bad reception.

If you used WiMAX 4G non-LTE and do NOT have LTE available in your area...

I upgraded from the ET4G which has WiMax 4g. There is a 4g tower literally 1/4 mile down my street and i was getting an average of 8-10Mb/sec download speed under Wimax.
I ASSUMED... (thats where i went wrong) I purchased the Note 2, and thought there was the 3g, 4g WiMAX, and 4g LTE modes/antennas. Nope. So now that I have the Note 2 without LTE in my area, I'm stuck with HORRIBLE 3g (CDMA) speeds. No more HD Netflix or even a reliable connection to Pandora (high quality).
I live in South Bay Silicon valley area in California. Now I have to WAIT until LTE rolls out before I can use a data connection speed over 100k/sec. I cant believe they made this phone without the ability to connect to WiMAX 4g. I suppose WiMAX 4g will trashed once LTE rolls out and that would be a waste of hardware in the phone but there was no warning in the tech specs or Sprint reps.
Just warning to all out there wanting to upgrade the the Galaxy Note 2 where LTE is not available but have WiMAX speeds. The phone will NOT pick up WiMAX 4G. I would have waited to upgrade. =(

Very true, I was just hoping to sell it for $200 and make some money back off the the beastly Note 2 price (on contract when purchased). Its so sad, I'm so used to looking at the 720p screen, it makes the E4GT look so much like a girly phone. =) I read some articles on how fast the 4g LTE should be coming out with wider coverage, I guess LTE is supposed to cover just about everywhere that has 3G coverage. Just a matter of time.Since the Optimus G and the Note 2 are being released, they are pushing LTE as "quick as they can" supposedly.

I checked as best I could. I went into the phones hidden menu using the MSL code and checked the settings. There is no mode for 4G and 4G LTE separately. Sprint tech support also confirmed this (which I don't believe the crap they say). I gave them a hard time because I had a very hard time believing that that phone would not pickup standard 4G.
The app called 'PHONE INFO' on the market show you all your options for radio settings also.

Correct me if I'm wrong but isn't the sprint s3 the same way? Lte only, no wimax?
I'm sorry about this, but honestly this was a no Brainer. Once sprint signed on with lte, wimax was done. To expect them to put a battery draining radio they had no intention of continuing with (known for a very long time) would be unrealistic.
