Rooting for others - Sprint Samsung Galaxy S III

Lately I've had a few people ask me to root their phones for them. I am not sure if I want to do this or not, it seems there is a lot of liability involved when hacking on a phone that isn't mine. On the other hand these people are offering $$$ for the service, so I guess I am just looking for opinions.

I'd say its cool, your providing a service that they can't do themselves and is realitively safe as long as you know what your doing. Just know that if anything goes wrong with the phone regardless if it has to do with you rooting it, that they'll most likely come back to you with the expectation you have to fix it. Just my opinion.

This is exactly why I won't root friends phones..IMO rooting is easy enough. If someone can't bother to or can't figure out how to root, chances are they will encounter problems down the line which will inevitably be your problems.

Yup. You'll be married to it every time the phone hiccups.

You shouldn't charge anything, he may even offer you something but you shouldn't ask, by this you've just told the whole community what your like.
People create tweaks, roms, scripts, tools and offer a ton of help & advice to people who have problems with their devices - all for free,
Even the guys who developed root for everyone did it for free.....

Mate I think that was the only thing you wanted to get, flamers.
You are either seriously dumb, asking in an XDA community how much to charge for someone elses work?! I mean seriously?
or wicked, trying to get a good flame out of this.
If "y'all" would see you face to face, I wouldn't even talk to you. You lack character and I do not like to talk ppl like that.

Chris I do not think he will listen to reason. Or understand the explanations.
Also OP.... you do understand that the minute you charge something you are responsible for its support and if something goes "wrong" or not according to wishes in later. He will held you responsible no matter how much you say "I do not take any responsibility"...

Oh, trust me I know.
But I also know there is a difference between doing something for free and money. Trust me on that one that there is .
Rooted, flashed my fair share of roms on buddies, colleagues phones, and never ever one of them came to me, that something is bugged.
I even had to hear from a third party that they had some issues. They never said I was at fault. Never.
However, repairing a computer and been forced, money put into my pocket with angry looks and going away, no matter how much I said I don't want it. Or getting a chocolate ...
this equals to a next call with "you know, you repaired I know, and its for sure not your fault, but could you come and have a look?"

If someone on the street asked you for the time would you charge him first?
Buck up your ideas man! XDA is an open community where people of like minded interests try to help better their phones and their lives etc...
Asking if you should charge someone to root their phone for them when the whole process was originally created by someone who released it for free is just dim witted imho.
I can imagine that with an attitude like yours you wont have these 'friends' for much longer.
Give me a tenner and I'll tell you how much to charge.
XDA is a free and open community. Send him here or do it for free.
Discussing how much money to scam from your friend isn't exactly what XDA is all about.

Need someone who got an OG < 14 days ago and wouldn't mind a potential brick for CM

Need someone who got an OG < 14 days ago and wouldn't mind a potential brick for CM
If you got an OG less than 14 days ago (which means you could exchange it for free if you brick) and wouldn't mind bricking, I have something kind of risky for you to try. This could potentially make us able to run nexus 4 kernels, which would make the road to CM exponentially shorter. If you are interested, please PM me or post here and I will send you the necessary files. If possible, I would like someone who knows how to use fastboot. This is completely voluntary, so do not get mad at me if your phone bricks. Sorry to ask this of you, but my 14 days ended. My idea is to flash the RPM partition from the Canadian E973, which has CM and can run n4 kernels. The nexus 4 RPM led to a brick unless someone flashed their partition map (in which case, it worked and accomplished the intended goal), since the OG's and N4's partition maps are very different, but the Canadian OG's is mostly the same, which leads me to believe it could work.
I got an OG off of craigslist last week, just to mess around with it, and maybe replace my GS3 with it, when AOSP ROMs started showing up.
I don't WANT to brick it... but it wouldn't be the biggest deal in the world if I did.
Plus, I've been leaching off XDA since my HTC Vogue. I think I owe the community.
I can offer my OG up to science. Let me know what you need from me. I've got a free day, for the most part, and I can follow directions.

Depends on the insurance. Need more info. Also a diff between rooting and being caught rooting. If it is working enough for them to tell you rooted on a claim it is working enough to reverse before you send it in. Some insurance don't care either way.

Warranty yes, insurance no. Rooting voids your warranty, not your insurance. Insurance covers physical damage, so if you hard brick your phone, just to be safe you "accidentally" dropped it in the bathtub.

I think you'd win in small claims if Samsung denied you warranty because you rooted your device, assuming there is a product defect.
To be honest there's also a choice DONT ROOT. It seems like it's all new to you, and believe me Samsung phones are way easier to brick than LG or HTC if you don't read carefully. Look if it's worth the risk playing a android game with a ps3 controller or loosing your phone for a period of time. If you go ahead and do it make sure you BACK UP YOUR EMEI, many times that gets overlooked when it's really the most important thing in your phone.

Just read, read, read. Then read some more. Make sure you fully understand every possible thing that can go wrong (I.e. Losing imei) and how to fix it. If you know what can happen, and how it happens, you will know how to avoid those things. Never have the "I will cross that bridge when I get there" attitude. Almost everything that can go wrong is 100% preventable/curable if you know about it ahead of time. If you don't feel like you can explain to someone else how to root or fix their phone, you're not ready yet.

No problem haven't rooted mine and I rooted every other phone I have. I just feel android is android it all looks the same. Not much difference between roms apart from the speed with build props and bloatware free. While you can always prepared yourself 100 percent there's always that random encounter that you can get with electronics that is not your fault and just happens.

[Q] Dumb TWRP backup question.

Quick question:
I'm getting a replacement GN2 on Monday.
Before running Triangle Away and restoring my current phone to stock, if I were to take a TWRP backup, could I simply restore the entire backup to the new phone without any issues considering it's all the same hardware?
I'm assuming that the other one will be an i317 as well, not a i317m. I'll verify though.
Yes, it's dumb, but I've never actually found a need to restore a backup in my life before despite the countless flashing.
Thanks!

My phone is being replaced through Javelin Media, they're a marketing company that sets up Samsung booths. One of their employees damaged my phone, so they're replacing it and they intend on repairing mine and doing idk what with it. I'm not really sure if I should revert to stock or not honestly.

I was thinking of just flashing a stock rom all together. Because they intend on getting it repaired, I don't really want to leave any chance for them to say something about it.
Looks like reverting to stock is easy enough though, may as well do it I guess.

Even though I agree with wase4711.. I wouldn't give these guys any chance to screw you over.
I remember your problem from the other thread.. And if your phone gets back modified to some guy like the one who did the damage, then they would definitely find any reason to say something.
You never know, there may be some people from xda working there. If they are paying for the replacement, one would think that they would go through the trouble to make sure that it hasn't been tampered with.
Good luck!
Just got the replacement today!
No creaks!
The issue is, I restored my old backup after having to rename the TWRP folder to match my old phones ID, but now it wasn't a "full" restore? My s-notes, ringtones, etc are missing?
I definitely don't want them to screw me over, so I'll make sure they get a phone in the same state as they sent me.

Replacement phone T-Mobile? Refurbished?

My friend is on contract on T-Mobile he got the note 2 a month ago and he told ordered two replacement refurbished note 2's then he's done with T-Mobile he ain't sending it back or nothing just done paying it and keeping the phones. I told him he can get into trouble for that he can right?? Or does it just mess up his credit? He did it three years ago and nothing happened besides probably bad credit now.
I know a lot of people on Craigslist be getting new phones without battery and back piece and I once bought one and it wouldn't read my Sim card because he never paid it I'm guessing.
The phone will black listed, side note I exchange phones a bunch due to defects or little things Tmobile is becoming much more strict about what they will exchange abs are now charging $5-$20 to process exchanges I wouldn't be surprised if a bill is coming his way soon

They may bill for a full cost of a replacement phone. I used to work for a t-mobile dealer LONG time ago (9 years ago) and they did the same thing. If we had a customer walk in, we process an exchange on their behalf. But we tell them if they don't send original phone back, they will be getting a large bill. And few people did. T-Mobile does work with them, and will take the charges out if you return the phone.
The phones will be blacklisted. If he sells them the new owner is screwed. Maybe he is Ok with that. If he is, find another friend as this guy proved himself to be a slime ball.

You ever see "bad esn" in an ebay auction description for a cell phone...that is what your buddy's phones will have. They can pretty much can be used as a wifi mini tablet, unless he is able to flash the phone to another gsm carrier. Regardless goes against his credit also.
Not true T-Mobile uses sim cards you can do what ever except. For warranty. I know a bit about this subject but the problem with things like this is once people start talking in a public forum than can screw everybody.

Again, not true. The phone WILL be blacklisted and won't work in the country unless you take it overseas maybe. How do I know? I deal with craigslist people and ebay listings for a meager living.
Phones will be blacklisted with Tmobile, Simple mobile and AT&T he will also be billed $600 for not returning the defective phone. The phones they send him will be factory refurbished which means it's just the phone there will be no battery, battery cover, Spen or charger.

If T-Mobile will send the police knocking if you don't pay?
Its probably the same as all of the pathetic dead beat people who think its OK to steal and don't think they should have to pay bills like the rest of us.
He'll have bad credit (which won't matter to him because he's apparently OK with stealing things anyway) and he'll get away with it for the most part while the rest of us law abiding citizens will continue to pay more for goods and services and more to cover for selfish people like this!!
