[DEV] Open webOS for One X - HTC One X

Let's port the webOS(http://www.openwebosproject.org/) to One X. I'm keeping a bounty of $100 for any developer who is able to make a fully functional port.

An additional $100 here.

this would be a great idea, but would it be doable?
wouldn't it be easier to port some of it's features, if it is, and improve on current htc one x android roms, making them even better and maybe ppossibly setting a new standard?

It is doable. You can't port specific apps or features as it is a different platform.

Why can't there be both if it can be done? I would like to see both a standalone port and a features added port. That would be awesome, if it is doable.

BUMP to resurrect this thread.
I used to own a Palm Pre, and i can say without a doubt, that WebOS was smoothest and most intuative OS i've ever used..the ONLY thing that held WebOS down was the horrid hardware Palm and HP put out....
Please someone, I can't pledge a whole 100, but i will certainly pledge $40....it ain't much, but if you add up what the others say, it will get you pretty damn close to a new nexus 7....and than we could beg the great dev who does it to port it to the Nexus 7...
Come on XDA, lets do this...well one of you great devs do it!! lol....i'm a great tester flasher, but i'm no dev and i don't have the hardware to build it out...

I had the Palm Pre 1 and still have the Pre 3. They're great and easy to use devices. WebOs has so much potential, it shouldn't be given up that easy! It's so innovative and full of interesting functions. I would love to see a port to the One X!!
Some of it's benefits:
really fast!!
easy to use
a great solution for "multitasking" (some say it's a useless gimmick, but they should take a look how other OS's solved this problem (!...))
gorgeous interface!
ability to play .apk's (ACL)
Opensource
and far more things I can't remember right now
To compare how good the software architecture of WebOs is, take a look at the Moto Droid (Milestone 1) and the Palm Pre. While the Droid is very laggy on Eclaire or even Froyo, the Palm Pre with the same processor as the Droid runs very very fast and smooth. Even with WebOs 2.1, which actually hasn't been released for the Pre. There's a port of WebOs 2.1 for the Pre and even then it's still so smooth and fast. Flash contents on websites are running very fast, but when I take a look at my Droid using flash contents on websites...I can count the frames...
I still belive in WebOs, because it's, in my opinion, a great OS!!

With the lack of proper drivers (which can't be solved in this case), such a port will never be all that great.

You probably need to email and pm devs to get people to work on this. Look for the big devs on your devices forum pm them advertise it to them as a new thing to test and how fun it will be for them to do something new, then offer them the reward.

HTC Wildfire S

They are releasing a new Willdfire S (which is quite a lot like the Legend) with Gingerbread!

Let's just hope they share the same drivers. I can't wait untill the Wildfire S release. Did anyone else find the 2011 lineup from HTC very dissapointing?
I agree with the (slightly) disappointing line up. On the otherhand they are all nice devices and I would pick one anyday over a Samsung or LG. Some dual core android HTC shift-esque action with honeycomb would be definitely be welcome though.

Still, it will be interesting to see if sense 2.0 will be possible to be ported and run on Legend with reasonable performance (Wildfire and Salsa have 512 of RAM - I think, this might make a difference).
ps. Sorry about the links - new user - no privileges to post links yet :/

Personally, I'm a little disappointed with HTC's offerings. And while I love my Aria, I think my next phone will be an Atrix. I love Cyanogen, so finegrs crossed it gets some love from the devs!
FACEBOOK button!?!?! When the hell did a freakin website get privileged enough to get a damn dedicated button on a cell phone??
judging by its similar specs to our legend, i'm very sure our talented chef will ported to our phones very soon. besides, gingerbread is already available to us through cyanogenmod7. fingers crossed and waiting for it. =)
But where can I find tools to port the Facebook button?...

...Really?? How is facebook as influential as Google? I know it's popular but it's nothing special by any means. Google at least makes Android, all Facebook does is constantly change their garbage website for the worse.
The fact that Facebook got so integrated with todays society somehow really only gives me more doubts for humanity.

I've suggested on the thread for this ROM whether they can include it, but it's kinda been ignored. Here's a link to my post asking for it.
Maybe if we made more noise about it, they'd consider doing it.
Yeah, after releasing the Kernel source of our HOX, the chances to enable OTG support(which is required imho) is very high. So this project might become "real" in the near future

Newly Discover HTC One X bug!

Hey guys,
I've recently discovered a loop hole in the Sense 4 lockscreen on the One X. It would be greatly appreciated if you bring awareness to this issue. Unfortunately, since this is my first post, I am unable to include any links to the YouTube video I have made. Hopefully I can post it as a reply to this thread because its very interesting.
I think I'm the only one that knows about this. So please comment if you have this issue too.
I'm guessing you mean where you can get the ICS entry screen on the security lock?

Haha small world! I have the Galaxy Nexus and it was my brothers One X. He always tells me to find a way to disable Sense or find a ROM that uses the Stock ICS. He believes that native ICS on the One X would be the best.

I'd do a search for you, but I'm using my phone at the moment not a computer and I'm extremely busy. If you browse the development section of the One X forums I know for a fact there is a One X Vanilla ROM. Don't bother searching, just go OneX>Development and browse around those top threads, plenty of other ROM's there too. It'll likely be on page 1 or 2.

I agree, Sense 3 was too heavy, Sense 3.5 was a fail and despite being created in tandem with Sense 4, Sense 3.6 really doesn't improve much.
Sense 4, different story. Still unstable, but give it a few months
Samsung's are only fast because they have **** software on then, that's an opinion not a fact. Touchwiz offers NO functionality more than the Stock Vanilla launcher, so why bother?

The one thing I long for on my phone is the time when the phone is locked. Old devices used to do it, like old Nokia's and the Lumia Symbian devices
For me, Sense improves the overall experience. I see Sense as an OS. Really it is Sense featuring Android, not Android featuring Sense, but that just shows how dedicated to improving and innovating software HTC are, now optimization is the key!
Phones need something like Windows Update, exploits and problems are found all the time, but fixes are never rolled out individually unless they are extremely crucial.

Thanks for pointing the space technique out bro, I was aware of it but could be bothered spacing it as jaaystott has already provided the link.lol
I've noticed a lot bugs mostly with the stock browser which I hardly use (mostly using Chrome), and I think HTC should invest a little more time on it as it's their flag-ship, but I'm also disappointed with how the One S beats the One X in all benchmarks. tsk tsk tsk....
Hopefully a well built ROM (Vanilla ICS) will come along and will get rid of all the heavy stuff in HTC Sense and will give a bit of an extra boost performance wise.

I believe this is because the software of the HD2 is completely open. This enables developers to port android, meego, windows phone, and recently even Windows RT on it.
Developers can only do so much is the source isn't fully open.

HD2 has S-Off, which means it's possible to change every partition, including how the OS boots. In case you haven't noticed, we don't have access to all of our partitions because we don't have S-Off. Given that everybody apart from you is so dumb, can you tell us how to boot arbitrary OSs?

If there was a team of devs on it, it could happen problem is the amount of effort it would take.

It just booted with plenty of bugs and fcs, and all beta releases of ubuntu touch are discontinued, and there is a reason for that.

But interesting more than Firefox OS
It might be possible but it would need to much hard work and effort to do so, since we are not only S-ON but Tegra 3, to witch it's very hard to port to...
It's just wouldn't pay off, as there might be like 100 people, like you, who would even consider installing Firefox OS OR any other non-android OS, since it is hard to do to a normal user as well...

[Q] What can I do to (help) port Sense 4?

TBH this forum seems a bit lonely... and my EpicParts question was easily abandoned
Whatever, greetings and happy new year to every one out there!
Today I happen to dig out a Sense 4 ROM for our E4G which boots, doesn't reboot THAT often and is resized well (what, you want links? I think that's a private workspace and maybe I shouldn't tell). But what bugs me most is that SystemUI (statusbar) always FCs for no reason and I can't do anything with that.
So here I got a HTC Incredible S ("vivo", which is the port base for our Sense 2.1 ROM) with a fully-functional Sense 4.1 build. Everything's working and things are better sized for WVGA. And it's smooth. Considering it's a single core device, I think there is already no obstacle blocking the port (I know that Sense4All project paused because One X is a quad core device and gets all sorts of reboots. Correct me if I'm wrong).
Thus, I wanna ask, as a non-coding noob:
1) Is porting process the same as common tutorials (copying frameworks, libs, etc)?
2) If not, is this even possible (to have Sense 4.1 ported from vivo)?
3) If not, again, what can I do to improve my current build on hand (i.e. simply stopping the SystemUI FC and maybe adding more HWA)? I don't intend to use the ROM as a daily driver... Just a tool for showing off
So... Thanks again for reading the thread and hope you can offer some guidance

If there was a stable version of Sense 2.1 or 4.0, it would be my daily driver. I really hope this project isn't abandoned.

2.1 is already very usable apart from BT (nah I don't use that), but many devs have already left or are silent. Must be with their new toys. That's why I'm trying to help. If I had time in winter vacation I'll try a bit, but hope not too high
And so I need some guidance and answers... Please. Even one answer will do.

You can try to pickup where our last dev left off,

The issue last reported by xboxfanj was that he too, got many force-closes.

I do want to, but I'm not a code dev and know almost nothing except that "brute-force" porting method, and I don't know whether that will work.
I mean, here I got a fully working Sense 4 build on a SINGLE-CORE device, so is this a proof that porting to us is also possible?

You ported sense 4 to an htc phpne which is much easier than porting it to something not even close to compatible with the hardware so it will be more difficult

But... I said
1) We HAD a now paused project that has ported Sense 4 and made it boot
2) I have a better Sense 4 base ROM (for our device, not HTC's) at hand with fewer random FCs
3) xboxfanj said that the port reboots because One X is quad core, and the ROM will keep searching for the extra cores. But IncS is single core and runs that beautifully (its port is based on One V and Desire X)
And that's why I'm seeking answers.

Part of the problem is that we couldn't port qualcomm roms which would be stable if they booted, but we never got it booting. Tegra is all intercoded into libs and looks for kernel files we don't have which causes it to reboot and be unstable.

To be honest, we never quite figured it out. We never got a proper logcat, since it only gave us unhelpful information, which means it doesn't even start to fully boot.

And this means all my expectes efforts should be in vain, huh?
But check this, I got a Sense 4 ROM from marcusant's site and it's a port from Desire Z, based on One V seemingly. So far apart from all the hardware issues (wifi, cam, sensor), only thing that prevented me from sticking to it is that SystemUI often FCs. And I think that is another base to start on, since IT'S QUALCOMM.

Is that so? There are two items in About Phone indicating phone model. One of them says "HTC One V", which I think is the port source, while the other says "HTC Desire Z", which is the device ported to I assume. I know that these can be modded, but why the hell does anyone take the trouble to mod it to Desire Z when we are Epic 4G? Thus I think it's a Qualcomm port.
Have you looked into it yet? Or maybe it's really your work and you know about it?

I had probably used the desire z build prop as well so it used some lines for our resolution. It's definitely my work. I remember making it..

Thanks for the encouragement, dude, but Senior III is extremely stressful in China, so I don't have time to look into anything that serious for now.
