Worth it? - Galaxy Note II Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Currently have the iPhone 5 (which I'm kinder bored of already) sold my S3 for it. I bought it for £599 in the UK 32gig version but can sell it for £639 - Thinking of doing this. Back to my question, is the Note II worth it?
Its keep the iPhone 5 and get the Note 10.1 or sell the 5 and get the Note II

You can wait 4 EE's LTE Note 2 variant.

Keep the iPhone 5 and buy the Note II too. Selling the iPhone is never a good idea, sorry.
And about worthiness? Well to me none of these #latest# toys are worthy. Be it 700$ plastic Note or a metal iPhone. But yes, again, to me, aesthetics matters, it'll give you peace and desire for long run, but how long? This ain't your 90's BMW that you will be wanting to keep, as soon as a new one pops up you'll say just frak this. So, you gotta pay what you gotta pay

SIII?
I'm looking at signing my contract again with Sprint. I don't mind being stuck on a contract for 2 year.
I want a phone that will be decent for 2 more years. I have the HTC EVO “supersonic” running Jelly bean. But it can’t run the latest games and HD apps I like on my Nexus 7.
When the Note was announced I waited, but it never came to Sprint. When the Samsung Galaxy S3 came out I wasn’t impressed because it was gimped dual core for $199 and I wanted a bigger screen. The Note will probably be $299 on contract and now I can get an S3 from Amazon for $149. Is the Note 2 worth double the price? I don’t know if I need a big screen now that I have a Nexus 7.
Pros of the Note 2:
-Double the RAM
-Quad core
-Stylus (taking notes at business meetings)
…But is it worth the price tag? Will there be better xda support for this in 2 years versus the S3?

You should also give a huge shout out to the battery life, it's incredible. At least to me.
I upgraded from a Desire HD, I was not impressed with the iPhone 5 but the Note 2 gives me that WOW effect that I wanted to have when I upgrade my phone. I was kind of worried about paying as much as 555€ (No contract) and had my thoughts if it was worth it but after 2 days using this device , totally. I don't find the size to big either. I am wearing skinny jeans and don't feel it to be bulky. It's probably because of the thin profile. But I have to agree that having an iOS device is also a good thing. (iPad 2 here)

I haven't found many things that iOS can't do that android can do. ( including widgets ) There is apparently a difference in the way they multi task...but they both get it done. Android has NFC, but that's hardware not software. And even now, I think NFC is just a play thing currently. (one that I admit I look forward to tinkering with)
I think the biggest difference is how moding is set up. On iOS, anything fourth party is under cydia. Any mod that I want to do to my iPhone, I just open cydia, hit a button, and it's done. I don't have to crawl web pages looking for a certain tweak and then get it to my phone. On the other hand, Google lets a lot of customization through the play store. Which is great!
From what I've seen, besides hardware optimization (if that is done) with roms like CM, they're just Android with pre-installed tweaks. Where as on iOS it's like you have Vanilla android, and you pick and choose what custom tweaks you want. I personally prefer the way iOS modding is done. But I can't wait to explore what Android has to offer. Though I am concerned at the apparent news that the CM team has no plans to work on the phone. But I have to try and find out if that is really important to me or not.
By the way, OP, idk if you haven't jail broken iOS before, but I'm guessing not since you're on the iPhone 5 and haven't commented how (afaik) that jail break isn't out yet, even tethered. I suggest not selling it, and jail breaking it. Or buy a cheap 3gs, 4 or 4s and jailbreaking that and playing with all the tweaks you can do.
As a new commer to the android community, it seems there is an ignorance at what iOS can do to many of it's most vocal users. Both systems and devices have pros and cons, just decide what flavour you'd rather have now. Or have both! switch one phone out every other week or something hehe. With all the tweaking i've done on my iPhone, i've never once had a stability issue...so it could be your back up as well.
Hope I've helped inform you a bit, and sorry if i've made any mistakes about android.

you have to look at it like this. on android you reinstall the whole os when you flash a rom there are many roms some of them come with apps that do what you say cydia does, and they are probably cydia inspired so you can have that on android to as part of the os
can you cange anything in the system on ios? on android I can easily modify any file, system or not

don't say that CM is just android with tweaks preinstalled its not and saying so in a android forum will get you flamed I know most roms are just as you described but saying it about CM is quite insulting to the devs, just a frendly pointer
it is sad that cm won't be going n2 but its not a dealbreaker there will probably be akop and many custom tw roms to choose from and don't forget kernel development and probably miui too, who knows it might even get ubuntu
and if it's just ui canges your after android has literary endless possibilities

sadly both ios and android have users who bought a religion and not a phone.
I think you might find android more unstable than ios it often is before you learn what not to do so having a backup is a smart move and when you have your first bootloop don't panic just hit xda and find out what you did wrong (yeah it's going to happen and it's going to be your own fault)

best ever phone is NOT the same as best in every way possible and not all people have the same preference. sure its a good phone nobody's saying it isn't but on the other hand s3, onex+ and iphone 5 are very very good phones too and I have no doubt that for some people the note and note2 is simply to massive

I wouldnt sell the iphone 5. I would add a little more money and buy the note 2 instead of the note 10.1. The note 2 is the most amazing device ive ever had (ipad and galaxy S3 being both second). But the iphone 5 is also great and has great value.

I was a galaxy note 1 owner and yes it's hard to get back to a smaller screen but with time you'll get use to it again. The note 2 isn't the only great smart phone out there by the way. But it depends on the OP it's just a matter of choice. Note 2 is fantastic and now we've just received the update for multiwindow multitasking.

" I’ll stay away from all exynos powered phones as long as there is no proper support from samsung in form of documentation and sourcecode (especially userspace) to get aosp properly working on it. "

I may have to look at the LG Optimus G or the next Nexus phone.

Coming From Iphone 4s ?

u guys think that it will be a good choice for me or not ?
This is an Android forum and more importantly an Android phone...what do you think people are going to tell you? Haha j/k
If it was apps you were worried about Android Market will probably overtake App Store in a year or two so I'd say go for it
It's personal preference but I'm sure you definitely wouldn't regret it. You seen Ice Cream Sandwich?!?! Daymmmm!
Yes, it will be a good choice.
Imagine the screen size only, that's enough to laugh about iPhone 4S tiny screen

I went from the iphone to the SGS2 and it didn't work for me I was told to try a pure google phone for what my needs were, I have not bought it yet as I'm waiting to see if it's going to be recalled or maybe get a phone from a fresh batch, the apps are somewhat different then on an iphone for an example is the pandora app for say if you turn it landscape you won't get the playlist you listened to during your secion(like you can't look back and see what you listen to and see all the album covers, some apps are better in android then on the iphone some I prefer some I don't JAMOP ,

Dude. Use a period or two.
The iPhone is the top-of-the-line iOS device while the Nexus is the same for Android. The 4S won't have a successor for at least 6 months, while the Nexus could easily cruise a year. That being said, both will be outspecced pretty quickly by quadcore Android phones. Try the Nexus out, IceCreamSandwich is the main feature, as is the HD screen. If you don't like it, go back to the 4S, or wait for some new Android phones. The 4S and Nexus are almost on par in terms of hardware, and are both flagship devices. Either one is a great choice, just depends on your UI preference.

We can't make that decision for you !, I didn't like the SGS2 because of the OS matched up with the hardware, The hardware is all there but it doesn't really work together with it's OS, It's not like how apple puts together their phone everything works like a well oiled machine, it's just not there for some reason, it's all a matter of how one notices it. This is my opinion and I'm hopping for a better phone experience this time around with google as the hardware picker and maker of there OS ICS and definitely not samsung the plastiqek phone maker, I would have liked LG or HTC make it. JMO like it or not
I just made the jump from iOS (3Gs, 4, 4s) to an SGSII, and it will be hard to go back, for me. Customization and larger screens were my main reason for jumping, and I haven't been disappointed. iOS still wins for the ecosystem and interoperability elegance, but I am happy with my choice.
On a side note, my SGSII is going back (bought an unlocked Nexus S) because like the 4s, it is not compelling enough to use my upgrade on for two years. I'll see what comes out in 2012 for an upgrade.

I'm buying this nexus outright and saved my upgrade for the iphone 5, I want the iphone 5 early shipped to me.
If you like to customize and do things like put ROMS, kernels, over clocking and such.
Android is now the way to go.......maybe in the past it was iOS but now they are pretty even.
Android is a lot better now especially with ICS....at least they finally decided to implement hardware acceleration -.- which is what iOS did since the beginning making it feel so much more fluid than android.
Anyways, if you sell your iPhone 4s, i would say get the GSII and save a few hundred bucks, especially since the Galaxy Nexus is costing more than the iPhone 4s even sells for. Then use that money when the GSIII or iPhone 5 come out.
I have both the iPhone 4S and Galaxy Nexus.
The iPhone 4S has superior build quality, camera and video recording, games, and vastly superior battery life.
The Galaxy Nexus has the best display I've ever seen, even better than Retina IMO! I can't believe people are bashing Super AMOLED HD or saying Retina is still way better. I have no complaints about the screen, its jaw dropping. Android 4.0 is the best OS out IMO as well. IOS 5 is cool and all, but I can't help but feel that Apple isn't innovating as fast as they should. Google literally redesigned and improved every aspect of Android in one update. In these past 4 years iOS looks nearly identical to how it did when it first launched, as well as many of the stock Apple apps. Every Google app got a giant facelift and improvement: YouTube, Gmail, Google Maps etc. And they look beautiful on this screen. The phone is pretty big overall but I'm getting used to it and its awesome. Performance is very good as well.
I've had the phone for roughly half a day and battery doesn't seem that good yet but I'll reserve judgment for a few more days.
I honestly can't believe Google improved Android this much in just one update. Its amazing.

I agree. People dog the 4/4s because they will shatter, but the build quality and materials are excellent. It doesn't feel cheap.
I liked the SGSII, initially, but it has always felt cheap and the big screen has terrible resolution. I realized that Android was what would keep me here. I'm looking forward to some premium look and feel Android devices to match the potential of Android OS.

In the smartphone game EVERY phone that comes out is eclipsed in 3-4 months as far as specs are concerned, that's just the nature of the beast now. The thing about the iPhone and the Nexus phones are that there is only one device made every year despite all the other ones that come out with newer faster hardware or whathaveyou. The Nexus phones were designed to have hardware and software work hand in hand more so than any other Android phone. Both of the previous Nexus devices are the only ones running 2.3.6 (to my knowledge - and the NS4G has 2.3.7) which is one update ahead of everyone else - brand new phones are being launched with 2.3.5. If you're gonna make the jump, you're going to want the pure Google experience.

I was going to say that LOL but he's also mentioning a phone that come out once a year samsung puts out phones ever three months
That's because of the timing it launched in. With 4 cores around the corner things will change fast .
But I have to say this to OP, me personally I have no desires to go into contest of who has the longer piss, what matters to me is the user experience, as long as it is smooth and fast I don't care about hardware much as long as it would support the latest software. Because overtime all the wow effect will diminish and you'll be left with the software.
I would change from the iPhone to anything just because of the tiny screen.

I left apple because iphone 4s wasn't an upgrade to me, I also wanted to try something different in life because I had the 2G 3G 3Gs 4 and wanted to see what else is out their and like I said the SGS2 was not for me and I would have turned back if someone didn't say give the google phone a try ( because of what I wanted in a phone ) So here I am waiting to purchase soon, just waiting for the first update and for the second batch to appear
from what I read on iclarified they said (speculation of course ) apple is working on a 4" phone That would be good and I hope they make both because a lot of people like using one hand when surfing and the iphone is great for that in size

I was in the same dilemma as well. If you don't mind the size, the Note 2 is the better choice. The Nexus 4 may get the faster updates but we're on xda anyway so pretty much any phone with a good community will get updates.
Personally, if I had a choice between those 2 phones, I would prefer the Note 2. I'm a bit biased because I've been with Samsung for so long and I don't trust any other brand other than them. LOL. But from an unbiased point, the Nexus 4 provides faster updates (as mentioned), the Krait processor, and it's Google. Note 2 has a bunch of useful features and now we have some very reputable and brilliant developers in our community which will jump start our development. There's even an Android 4.2 (WIP) coming for us!

Did you ask this same question in the Nexus 4 section? lol...It's gonna be hard to get an unbiased opinion when you ask a question like that in a section specifically for one of the phones
Having said that, I had the LG Optimus G, and aside from the LG skin (which wasn't TOO horrible) it was a good phone, but I still promptly exchanged it for a Note 2 and don't regret it one bit. I have never had good experiences with LG phones. The display was beautiful though.
I have a note 2 and my buddy has a nexus 4. I thought the nexus 4 screen looks way better then note 2 screen hands down in my opinion. The build quality and feel of nexus 4 is also much better. However no removable battery no lte, and no sd card support are major deal breakers. 16gb is just not enough with games and apps installed. At least if they made a 32gb version.
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I317 using xda premium
The nexus 4 has some attractive points. LTE maybe less of an issue if you in Canada. The screen is nice and it's a fast performer.
But for me the lack of MicroSD and non-removable is a no go for me. Not only is battery life on the Note 2 awesome, but I have a spare battery i can use if every needed. I also really like having the s pen and the 5.5" screen i greatly enjoy. The size of the note is not for everyone, I'm OK with it.
You have to decide how important each of these factors are to you. Once you do that I'm sure you'll be happy with your choice.
If note 2 was made by LG and nexus 4 by Samsung, I'd say go for nexus 4...
Personally I'm staying away from anything LG, I had enough gray hair with LG Nitro HD, thank you very much.

You're lucky you never tried the Thrill then...
I need more time before trying LG again. The guy at the AT&T store tried to get me to buy the Optimus G when the Note was not in stock yet. The nexus might be okay if LG isn't responsible for the software.

When you ask such question in Note 2 forum, my feeling is that you are going to get some bias answer.
I have both phones, and I think both phone are top notch in their own way. Here's what I think:
Nexus 4
- Very solid build, the construction is as solid as iPhone. Feels great in hand.
- The display does produce some relatively accurate colour compare to my IPS displays. I do a lot of photo editing/viewing. On the other hand, the sAMOLED does throw the colour off a bit by over saturated (nature of AMOLED), with the "natural" profile on Note2, it does become closer to real colour. Pixel density on the N4 is also better, but it's not critical as the Note 2 display is pretty sharp with the sAMOLED HD.
- AOSP, AOSP, AOSP! If you aren't a fan of Touchwiz, this is what you should keep. Not just the updates, as they don't come everyday. It's the user experience. Samsung does add a lot of neat feature that many can't live without, but in my honest opinion, AOSP does provide a nice layout and great feature out the box. I am also not a huge fan of Samsung's oversized UI, either.
- Believe it or not, the on screen button is a very important "feature" of N4 - You now have a place to put your thumb when you hold the phone, especially when passing the phone to people to show them stuff...without accidentally touching any of the buttons. However, also because of the on screen button, you do lose some screen estate.
- Buttery smooth, yes, smoother than the "more powerful" Note 2
- The price - You are indeed getting a lot of phone for the price that you are paying.
- Battery is medicore, partially due to bugs of 4.2 I believe. Dead locks are draining the battery.
- Lack of SD card might be a deal breaker for you. It isn't for me.
- Camera sucks.
Note 2
- Huge display, this is probably the max that you can carry with the borderline portability. The display is beneficial for reading stuff, browsing, sharing contents with friends
- The battery is ridiculous. The size, with the power management of the software makes it unreal. I get average 2 hours of light/moderate usage per 10%, on LTE.
- Touchwiz - To use the full features of the Note2, you probably don't want AOSP. The S-Pen works well with touchwiz, and I find touchwiz works well with large displays due to the oversized UI elements
- Size - It's pocketable, but it's not extremely comfortable. Taking in and out, using it in public, talking on it looks very awkward. No matter how big your hands are, how big of a person you are, this IS larger than your average phone by a lot
- One hand usability - Samsung does have some one hand accessibility but in general, reaching for places around the screen is a struggle with one hand
- Great sound - Speaker, and headphone jack.
- Strong vibrator
- S Pen - Unless you have a use for it, it's a gimmick. It's fun to fool around with it, but the hype tends to die off quickly
- FAST charging. Nexus 4 is fast, but Note 2 is even faster consider it's massive battery. This is a very important feature to me.
- Impressive camera, but not that it's any/much better than that of SGS3
- Oh, if you don't have a 7" tablet yet, this should fill that gap a bit.
As it stands, Note 2 has some very attractive points to me, such as the large display for reading and the insane battery life that makes me not to worry about being close to a charger. However, I don't feel comfortable using it on a daily basis due to the size. WIth that said, I am using a Note 2 now as I gave my Nexus 4 (8GB) to my other half. I have a 16GB coming in a month, and I will re-evaluate it again by then.
These two phones are pretty much Android in it's best form in today's market, and they are not substitutable for each other due to the different nature of them. The phone war has evolved to beyond to the specs-war just like computing world. The "better specs" of Note 2 doesn't necessary determine whether the phone is better or not, and with that said, Nexus 4 specs is pretty impressive too. You need to pick your own base on your need
Hope it helps a bit with your decision! Any more specific questions you have that can help with your decision, just ask. It's a tough one to make.
Awesome thanks for the input its a huge decision I think of will end up keeping the note

The Nexus 4 ultimately had too many drawbacks for me to consider it. The thermal throttling issues with the S4Pro processor, the non-swapable battery with less than stellar battery life, the limited storage without microSD expansion, the glass back prone to cracking, and no LTE. And now we find out that the Nexus 4 cannot support USB-OTG, so all those who bought one thinking they could move files over to an external drive are SOL. No USB keyboards/mice/Dualshock etc. Not a big deal if you have bluetooth peripherals, but I want to have as many options as possible. The Note II is a superhero in that regard...
I have the Note 2 and personally love it, but if you don't need the size, then nexus 4 is a much better option. I love the vanilla 4.2 JB and the screen is much crispier, any build quality is top notch [I have both phones]
If note 2 had a 1080 display then, I would so Note 2 hands down.
Get a quality BT headphone and you won't have to worry about how you look to other people...personally I really could give a rats behind how others think...but hey that's just me...
Nexus vs Note II...to me it all comes down to do you want the biggest best phone or a smaller phone that doesn't offer as much.
S-pen is there if you need it...and it's always better to have it and not need it than to need it and not have it.

Mac,
No offense but I think your post is pretty bias.
- Yes, you can always bring a BT headset, but shouldn't you be able to hold a phone comfortably on your face instead of having to depend on a BT headset in order to not look silly? Also, how about the people that don't like bluetooth headset in general?
- S-Pen, yes, it's better to have but at what cost? Size of the phone?
- Touchwiz isn't without it's own glitches, whether AOSP or not is a pure preferences whether it has bugs or not. I actually find touchwiz works well with GN2, AOSP won't.
- Smoothness, sorry, Note 2 just isn't as smooth as a N4 no matter what launcher you put in. It could be due to settings, but out the box even with Nova, it's not there.
- Memory Card - why must he get one?
I do agree with Note 2 having better specs, but the cost is the size. If you can live with the size and Touchwiz, there isn't a reason not to get Note2....but only if you can live with the size.
Cheers.

Caring about what other people think of you holding a phone to your face reeks of insecurity to me. "Looking Silly" is the last thing that would sway me from buying an excellent device.
Remember how small phones used to be ten years ago? It wasn't that long ago when people also thought 3.5" smartphones were huge.

Cy8888, that's funny you said Mac's post was biased because that's exactly what I thought when I read your long post above.
Remember, the OP asked what people thought and the reply's have been, for the most part, just that. Almost every statement you made in your lengthy post was "your opinion", certainly not facts. For example, I use the S-Pen daily and love it's added benefit and it, in my opinion, is not a gimmick as you stated.
So, no need to call out another forum members post when he is doing the same as you...giving his opinion as requested by the OP.

I was bias because I love/have the Note 2 so much but the size, right?
What I said: "S Pen -Unless you have a use for it, it's a gimmick." - You do, so it's not a gimmick for you for sure. I know a few people that do have a use for it and I am impressed with how they make use of it for work purposes.
Which other point of my post is pure bias? I simply listed out the things I from with using both devices, I never said one is better for another for everyone. However Mac did say that "you are GOING to want one", "BUGS with 4.2", etc etc to just praise the Note 2. OP is trying to make a decision, and words like that aren't going to make his choice easier is it?

I might have worded it wrong, but the fact that it's bigger than normal does draw attention. Yes, you can choose not to care about anyone thinks at all, but there are some actually "dont" want to draw that type of attention with a device. It is a fact that Note 2 is humongous, and that's ALSO it's selling point. Unless you have a need and can live with the size, otherwise you might want to look at other alternatives like SGS3 (which i have one sitting here also if you want comparison) that offers something in the middle.
I apologize if I've rubbed anyone the wrong way, wasn't the intention.
Cheers!

[Q] I have a Note 2, would you recommend an Android tablet as well?

I'm a big fan of Android, and I've been always working in Java, so the programming transition is kinda easy, I have a Samsung Galaxy Note 2, and I really like it, however, I always think on getting an Android tablet, something not expensive, 7'' with ICS 4.0 and above, but...would yo recommend to get a tablet if you already an Android phone with a "big" screen? I mean, I use my phone for mails, social network, utitilies, I have two minor apps developed for it, so I use it as a testing device as well, what do you think, isn't too repetitive to have both? I need some advices, I want a tablet, but I wouldn't end it up leaving it there doing nothing after a while, thanks!
If you feel you want a 7" tablet, i recommend you to buy the Nexus 7. Or you could just wait until a new Nexus 7 released which had been rumored coming next week in 24th July. It will have fast Android updates directly from Google. However, if you felt like 7" is small for you, you can buy the Nexus 10 or Asus Transformer Infinity. Both of them have a high range specs.
Sent from my Galaxy S4 i9500
The question is because I'd like to buy a non expensive tablet, I'm not looking for anything with the latest specs, but want to know if some of you, who has a Note 2 and also a tablet, feel like both are being used in a regular way, I wouldn't like to buy a tablet and then leave it there doing nothing, I know that every person is different, but in general, does it worth to have both devices? thanks!

My answer is a simple NO, I have a Galaxy tab 10.1 and I hardly ever use it, personally i wouldn't need a 7Inc screen at all when owning a Note II.
I must confirm this - as you can see from my signature, I have Note II and Nexus 7, which is an excellent tablet, but I rarely use it since I got the SGNII. It is more convenient to use when I'm at home, and I do use it sometimes, but not much. Also I use it when I travel, I have to spare phone battery for emergency if I have to call etc. so another device comes in handy because of the "extra" battery
So, if you can afford it - get it, why not. But it is not necessary if you have SGNII and it is pretty much a waste of money. I have it only because my Desire HD died and then I got the Note....
The same with me. Since I own Note2 I didt play with my tablet even once. Actually I am looking to sell it. I am considering nexus7 ver 2 or even 10" but only something with a high resolution hdtv+ screen. Just to use it laying on a couch to read and watch hd movies. But really just considering this because note2 is optimal device in every aspect so far.

Depends on how good your eyes are. While the large screen of the Note 2 is a boon I often run into situations where text is too small for me to read without a magnifying glass, and the website that put it up won't let you zoom the screen! I used to use a 10-inch Transformer TF700, but its many problems and poor support made me give up on it. So I splurged on a Galaxy Note 8 -- just to keep things consistent -- and it makes life so much easier for these poor aging eyes.

First of all, thanks a lot for your opinions, I know that the needs of each one of us is different, but is good to have an opinion about someone who already have both devices, I guess I'll pass, if I would really need it, I would not think about it this much, as you say, the phone is more than enough, and if I purchase the tablet, I would use it from time to time, thank you, have a nice day! :good:
I honestly don't reckon you need a tablet and a Note 2. I've had an original iPad, a Blackerry PlayBook (LOL), and a Nexus 7, but since I got the Note I haven't used any of them. Having one device is just simpler, you only have to keep info correct and updated on one thing, and it's always in your pocket. A tablet can't do anything fundamentally better than a phone, and it sure is not a laptop replacement, so for me I decided to sell the lot and stick with just the Note. In saying that, I still find myself looking at the Note 8 and the Tab 3, but I won't consider buying anything with an LCD panel any more after being spoiled with HD AMOLED, heh.

I have a Galaxy note 10.1 to complement my Note 2. I recommend the pair if you find yourself absolutely in need of a tablet for extended sessions where you might be taking extensive notes or doing diagrams. (Or watching movies for longer periods of time...)
Being able to share files by wifi on the fly is a pretty nice advantage of having the two devices.
Why buy a tablet when everything it has or do is already on your phone? I still dont see the purpose of tablets :/ i wont even exchange it for my super laggy netbook

[Q] How easy will it be for AOSP rom makers to develop for the new Note 10.1?

Hi guys,
I have completely ditched Samsung after letting me down with the first Galaxy Note.
They did not open source their drivers at the time of ICS. So the devs could not get project butter to run.
So we were stuck with using Samsung roms if you wanted any buttery smoothness.
It has been a long time and I have only used Nexus devices since.
How is Samsung doing now?
Did they come around? Are they open sourcing their drivers?
Is the CM team for example going to be able to fully support the Note 10.1 Exynos processor?
Cheers,
Daan

Is your Note 3 supported by AOSP rom makers?
I didn't find the butter back then. My Huawei Pad had less free ram, in order to buffer more screen contents, methinks, but nothing got smoother.
But I should have considered the situation on the Note about custom roms, before buying one.
Will take a look, for academic reasons, whether Experia Tablet Z owners have custom roms, that was number two on my list, and cheaper.
This is currently the best tablet on the market. Why cripple it with an AOSP ROM? Is there something I'm missing here?

Well, I hate touchwiz with a burning passion. I'd much rather it be closer to stock Android. The pen should still work, as it works with the Note 3, so you won't loose any functionality.

Cripple it? No, you will improve the device and any of the functionality that you think you are losing is equaled or improved on with other apps once you are rooted.
My S4 is significantly better after installing Kit Kat vs. Touchwiz. I am undecided on rooting my tab 10.1 2014 due to some security requirements.

That's the thing... you will waste so much time trying to get back the functionality the tablet already has out of the box that it's not worth it. I have CM 11 on my S3 becuase is makes more sense on a phone, but on this tablet with the features it offers you're just wasting the potential of this device. When I pay $600 for something I want everything working and working correctly (excluding some of the S-features) sounds like a Nexus 10 would have been a better fit for you.

I got tired of waiting for the Nexus 10 2. It was my first choice of tablet with the rumored specs. In favor of the Note 2014 - it is on the market now, it was a price I was happy with and it has an SD slot which the Nexus would not. Plus if you want a 10" tablet it is really the only Android option right now. Is it perfect or my ideal tablet? No, clearly not.
Also to your point concerning price. I am with you - the tablet is not worth $600 to me. However I picked up the 32gb version through the Groupon deal. For $420 I think I am satisfied enough to keep it (still making that determination). Or at least I do not regret spending the money.
I am not a big gamer nor am I trying to do any coding on the tablet but to me the Note 2014 comes pretty close to being a laptop replacement. It is not all the way there but I can now travel, attend meetings, etc. without feeling too handicapped if I do not have my laptop with me.
What little I have read on the subject it sounds like rooting this tablet is pretty easy and then just a couple of apps to expand the stock functionality. Hell, I will probably spend more time trying to setup the tablet the way I want through Touchwiz, Nova, or another launcher than if I simply rooted it.

You are right it would be problem solved. Unfortunately I need an "unmolested" tablet for some of the networks/systems I connect to. A rooted tablet will trip security warnings and will be blocked.
Guys, guys, guys! This thread was marked as a [Q]!
It has gone completely off topic.
Those with S4's, S3's and newer Notes, how is your experience with AOSP roms?
Is it easy for open source devs to develop for them?
It doesn't matter who likes what, or why you can't root because of security issues.
The question is: will it be easy to develop non touchwiz Roms.

The answer will be no. The device is very expense and will not get much support in general. Also there seems to very little supoort for the Note 3 with the Exynos Octa. As others have stated I do not see the reason for wanting AOSP on a Note device. You will lose almost all support for the pen and pen specific apps since the cost is so high for the device it seems a waste to not use the pen.

[Q] Upgrade Worthy?

So I have an upgrade available (currently using a Note 3) and I was wondering how people are liking this phone? I'm really struggling on what my next smartphone will be since there are so many good choices out there right now. Thanks!
It's hard to judge. I'm not familiar with the note 3, but I came from a gs4 and the g3 is worlds better. Depends on you though. But honestly if I were you I would hold out for a few weeks at least. New moto x, note 4, and end of October comes (rumored) nexus 6. All new phones come with only small changes in hardware, nothing gotta have and revolutionary. But I will say that so far I'm loving this g3. Bone stock was honestly a tad disappointing, but now I run skydragon ROM and kernel and with a few small tweaks this phone is near perfect. I wasn't a huge fan of amoled, it felt very neon and unnatural but I did love the deep blacks. Personally I'll probably never get another Samsung device again.

Check out this thread, where several others (including myself) moved from the Note 3 to the LG G3 and gave our opinions, views and takes on both.
I came from an S4 and I prefer the screen to AMOLED. Even though this phone is bigger than S4 it doesnt feel like it at all
I came from Verizon s4...and had that phone humming.... The g3 blows it away. My battery life record is over 70hrs...and I typically go 36hrs or more. I run ZoneROM and have it deflated as much as possible.

Go wait in line somewhere.
Anyway, to the OP. I have used samsung quite a lot (had an s2, s3, skiiped the 4, and a s5) and my wife has a note 3. IF you are going to use the "note" features, it might be worth considering. HOWEVER, if you dont need a stylus, this thing blows any samsung out of the water on pretty much every level. Software is better, hardware is better (mostly), the g3 is super fast, great on battery, has great ergonomics (the s5 felt more awkward to use than this).
