Remove Dropbox images from the gallery - Galaxy Note II Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hey guys, I was wondering how to to stop Dropbox images from showing in the Gallery.
Im not sure if this is a Galaxy Note 2 feature or a Jelly Bean feature.
Thanks in advance.

Problem is I can't seem to make that selection stick. Next time I return to the gallery it reverts to showing all content.

Try creating a file in the dropbox folder titled ".nomedia" (no quotes, of course and you NEED the period). That should work for you

Problem is, like he said, the this will only hide it from the current view.
I'm wondering if it's possible to remove it permanently.

And work it did!
Not at first, though. I created the .nomedia file (in the PC's Dropbox root folder) and restarted the phone. Pictures were still there. So I went into settings / apps and started clearing data for Gallery, Multimedia storage and CloudAgent. That did the trick.
A big Thank You!

Important update:
There are a few settings I had overlooked. Under Settings / Personal / Cloud, the last two entries control synching images and/or videos. I had assumed these would prevent uploading images to Dropbox (they don't) but they work the other way around.

Hello everyone,
Sorry in advance for being dumb but I am having the same problem with drop box pictures showing up in the gallery I would be grateful for clearer and step by step instructions as to where and how to add the no.media file. Is this file added to my phone settings or to my computer? Any help is greatly appreciated many thanks in advance.

I went into Settings, Cloud, Disabled Pictures and Videos (both options at the bottom).
The thumbnails and cache and stuff were still on the phone in /storage/sdcard0/cloudagent . I cleaned the content of all those folders below. Next I opened the Gallery. Only local pictures and Facebook pictures there now. There is probably a setting for the Facebook pictures too... I check up on that (Yepp, there was. Settings, Facebook, Sync interval settings, Gallery Sync...).
I still prefer QuickPic over Gallery though...
Despite no Gallery Sync on my Facebook pictures it still loads them (it more or less becomes unresponsive during re-loading the Facebook pictures). It just checks them up during launch rather than through a regular sync. So, away Gallery goes for me (disabling it...since I wont use it anyway). If it can ignore my pictures on Facebook I might consider using it again.

Download the nomedia file from here: http://www.mediafire.com/?xqjjytzzznz
Unzip it and transfer the resulting .nomedia file to your phone. It's a hidden file (because the name starts with a period) so you have to enable "show hidden files" in your file manager to see it! Then just copy and paste that file into all folders you don't want gallery to index.

Before you try the .nomedia thing, if you removed the dropbox sync, go to
- Settings
- Application manager
- slide to the right to get ALL applications
- find the Gallery and do a Force stop then Clear data and clear cache.
Good luck

Uh man! totally missed the line where it says youre using the S3 and not the Note 2.
I assume the Cloud option is part of Jelly Bean 4.1 so we dont have it on the stock S3 yet.
You need to go to Accounts and sync under Settings and make sure your Dropbox account is not syncing (The 2 circling arrows are greyed out and not Green), then clean the Gallery data and cache again.
Btw, you should never give up on stuff that keeps annoying you

another problem of the cloud sync: it fills up internal memory really quick!
after 3 days my internal mem was down to about 600mb free, identified cloudagent
as the cause... it started to cache all my dropbox pics on my internal sd!

Hey guys!
It's 2011, so if you haven't already taken a step into the cloud, it's time to get started! This guide shows you how to take all your data automatically in the cloud to free your phone storage for things like apps and games, which cannot be accessed through a cloud (yet).
Before I start, I just want to make it clear that this thread should NOT be used to discuss what things are safe in the cloud and all that privacy related stuff. If you have passed your ego and realized that you are not the most important/secret person on this planet with all your documents and stuff being soo secret, then go on, the cloud is waiting for you. If you have problems concerning privacy related topics open a new thread and simply CTRL + W out of here right now.
A second note concerning availability of Internet in some areas:
Before you synchronize everything through a cloud you have to ask yourself how often you loose your internet connection with your mobile. If you find yourself often in areas without coverage or poor connection, or if you have a limited data plan you maybe only should sync your Contacts & Calendars, but not Movies since it would become unusable, or at least very frustrating. In Germany and U.S.A. (I guess) you don't have to worry anymore, I've got full speed connection no matter where I go, but you have to know this for yourself.
Personal Stuff - Contacts, Calendars and more
First of all, let's start with the obvious stuff. Things like Calendars, E-Mail, Contacts not only can be stored in the cloud, it would be foolish not to do so! In a time when people have more than one device that can access the internet and are "smart" (i.e. can display calendars & stuff, don't blame me for calling that smart, blame the ads ) it would be terrible when devices can't communicate with each other to sync changes. When your appointment get's delayed it should show up directly on your PC, shouldn't it? But enough of the reasons, let's get this started.
Setting this sync up maybe the easiest of all, because Android is all about syncing these stuff almost by default. You simply have to use the Google Apps GMail for your mail and contacts, Google Calendar for your schedule and so on. Feel free to discover all of the Google Apps and decide for yourself what you need and want.
To set the sync up on your phone simply
Goto Settings -> Accounts and sync -> [email protected] -> Sync Contacts, Calendar, Gmail, ...
And boom! there you go. All your information is now synced between your devices, no matter where you change any of it.
Photos
The next thing to sync would be your pictures. For this media type, I have chosen to write a guide about setting up a sync with Google's Picasa Webapp. Although you might choose other Photohosting sites like Flickr or SmugMug, Picasa enjoys a deep integration in the Android system. To set this sync up, you need to go through 2 steps:
1. (Automatic) Upload of your pictures
Like fruit-fanatic Jobs said: "There's an app for that". For this task (and the movies later) the app "Pixelpipe Post and Upload HD" seems to be perfect, since it also got a feature to automatically upload your pics to your Picasa web albums right after you've shot one.
Set-Up Guide:
1. Create a Pixelpipe account
2. Create a "pipe" for your Picasa account
3. Enable "auto upload" in Settings (works like a charm on the Galaxy S)
4. Shoot some pics and try
2. Sync your Picasa web albums to the phone
After we got our Photos up in the cloud, we need a way to view them on our device. Thanks to Google, we can integrate them in our SNS sync in the settings menu:
Goto Settings -> Accounts and sync -> [email protected] -> Sync Picasa Web Albums
After your next sync (i.e. immediately ) you can find all your Picasa web albums in the Gallery app indicated with a small Picasa logo. This is the major advantage of Picasa, because with your photos being integrated in the gallery, every third party app can use them to modify or distribute your images.
Movies
In syncing movies, we take a similar way like Photos, also using the Pixelpipe app. Our destination will be Youtube because it delivers us unlimited space. Disadvantages of Youtube are a 15 min limit, but if you don't have a problem with that, Youtube is fine.
To set the sync up, simply add a "pipe" in your Pixelpipe app to Youtube and enable autosync. I recommend to set the video to private or not listed, because but that is again your own choice. You have to choose wether you want to have the whole Youtube Community watching your pretty vids or not . You can choose to opt-out on autosync, and only upload when you are on Wifi, since this could really take up some bandwith. The advantage of uploading with the Pixelpipe app over the built in "Share to -> Youtube" option is that you can upload HD video. The built in share option uploads your videos in minor quality.
To view your videos simply fire up your youtube app and enter your Username. Your videos will then be displayed under the "My Videos" tab. To download them again, simply use any of the Youtube video downloader apps available on the market.
Music
For our favorite tunes, we will use mSpot to access and stream our whole library directly from our phone. First of all you have to download the sync app for your Computer from www.mspot.com and select what you want to send up into the cloud. Note that free Users gain 2 GB of storage, so maybe you need to make a selection on what you want to take with you and what not.
After your music is placed in the cloud you can download the mspot Music app for Android, enter your Username and PW and gain direct access to your music. The only lag I encountered was when starting a song, it takes about 1-2 seconds longer than a local media player like Winamp, but mspot can also access files that are directly stored on your phone.
NOTE: Galaxy devices are having a playback issue right now, where the song sometimes just goes silent and you have to tap on pause and resume to hear something again. Mspot is aware of this issue and working on it.
Data
Tired of connecting your phone through USB to copy stuff to your device? The answer to that is "Fiabee"! This works best with Google's Browser Chrome since you can directly put images and more into your Fiabee space or send them directly to the device (Link). The advantage of Fiabee is: Space. They are throwing free space away like hell, I just got 16GB because I was an early user -> Try it!
Another service of choice could be DropBox. Here you have a volume that syncs to every device that is connected the cloud, wether it is a desktop computer, netbook, mobile or tablet. An extremely reliable and fast service, which makes sharing with specific persons or groups very easy.
That's it! If you have any suggestion, comment or question, feel free to share your thought!
bye, Smirny

Don't be sad, I'll send you a golden USB cable for next christmas
for Galaxy S owners all of the above are optional
as it requires either an unlimited 3G plan, or wifi access all the time
for Nexus S owners, it's almost a must to have everything on the cloud
well I have quite unlimited 3G here @Vodafone. And my HD videos only get uploaded through Wifi, it simply would take too long through 3G sometimes.
1) good one, thanks!
2) Does pixelpipe delete the uploaded photos? Otherwise you would see them twice. Picasa and on the phone ?!

No, of course not ^^ At some places even I reach faster cellular upload rates than at home, but it still takes some time, so I don't want to walk around the Munich airport in circles to upload my videos =)
Thanks, any chance of a fiabee invite?
of course. Isn't registration open any longer?
https://sync.fiabee.com/i/4d210e4c11af1
thanks, just read somewhere that invites get you more space? but it doesn't seem that is the case anymore But still 1gb storage is better than nothing
well then maybe you should rely on dropbox, fiabee syncs well, but for some images you can't do stuff with them in other apps because you can't put them in the gallery :/ but in combination with the google chrome webapp it's beautiful.
btw. just realized that I forgot to link that chrome app in the original post ^^

I haven't found an option yet, I'd be curious about that too :/ Right now you have to set it to private manually, and the particular bad thing about this is that you can't do that neither in the app nor the mobile website, you have to go to the desktop website to do that :/ Or maybe I have missed a setting ...
great news:
the mSpot App now got rid of the Playback issue and it works perfectly on the SGS now =)
I've been looking all over for a comparison between Fiabee and Dropbox. Anyone?

How the heck do you just view pictures on the actual phone (as opposed to cloud)

I tried to look for a permanant setting for the Gallery to just show pics on the phone itself but it keeps reverting to "ALL" view where it shows my picassa / dropbox. Thank you!

I don't know if it actually works since i don't use Picasa. but it's worth a shot.
My Sync Internet doesn't seem to sync
desont seem to work ;(
I managed to do it with an app called QuickPic and some adjustments in the settings!
After downloading Quickpic, you go to Settings>S Cloud. There, as the first screenshot shows you disable pics and video sync. (I belive you did that already.)
Then, you go to Settings >Google then you select your mail address and you'll have the options as you can see on the second screenshot. Untick picassa and google photos.
Now it is possible you still see some of your cloud pics on your device. I'm pretty sure you can't delete some of them with the stock galery app. So use Quickpic to delete them.
Hope it helped

Make sure the synching for the Picasa albums is still off, then go into Settings > Application manager. Select the All tab, find Gallery and hit the Clear data button. Next time you open the Gallery, it will take a moment to rebuild it but the Picasa albums should finally be gone.

[Q] ?? Samsung GALLERY app not remembering "View by" settings??

Hi.
Just a quick question will clear this up for me.
In the Gallery settings there is a menu choice to:
View by
a) All content
b) Content in Phone
c) Content in Drobpox
d) Content in Facebook
e) Content in Picasa
By default it seems to show 'All content'
After selecting the option to show just "Content in Phone" it then reloads only the images in my Phone. BUT.. after closing the application and the next time I open the Gallery it's back again to showing "All content" as though it didn't remember my "View by 'Content in phone' selection"
QUESTION is: Is this normal behaviour? Or have my permissions being screwed with somewhere or somehow?
thanks in advance for any response

This has been driving me nuts also. I thought I had it figured out; I assumed that the problem must be with syncing. I went into sync settings and unclicked "google photos" and "picasa" and was confident that would solve it, but noooooooooooooooooo.
I got the answer. I'm sure everyone else already knows this because a) last post before mine earlier was over a month ago, and b) I got the answer in the AT&T Note 2 forum, (which is where I should have been in the first place since that's the model I have! :silly so perhaps everyone saw it over there.
ANYway, if not, here you go:
As I assumed in my previous post, you need to uncheck Picasa/Google Photos from sync settings, THEN (the important part), clear the gallery's data.
Bye!
Sv: [Q] ?? Samsung GALLERY app not remembering "View by" settings??
Same on my Note. Really sucks. Another thing is that sometimes the phone completely delete the gallery's cache, wich means all thumbnails are gone. Really annoying. Samsung needs to update the Gallery App asap. It's overall perfomance sucks...

[Q] google nexus contact sync problem

Friends i have a Google nexus and im running paranoid ROM 3.1 (latest) ,on 4.2.2 droid had the same same problem with carbon ROM and the custom ROM.
I flashed my phone with PA 3.1 a few days back and the phone syncs all contacts with gmail a few days down the line and the same problem again every thing else on the same account syncs well but the contacts just don't wanna sync anymore , although a short while solution would be to delete all entries by emptying the people and contacts data from system app and it re-syncs for a few days but that's not a perrinial solution . had the same problem with carbon ROM and even in Custom ROM (although here it started a like 3 months after i bought the phone was fine till then.)
and my Facebook contacts show as synced from the account sync place but 0 contacts appear when i see Facebook contacts in people???
please help
Thanks & Regards
I had a very similar problem. Contacts would sync after clearing data, but then randomly stop syncing.
The issue was that there was a corrupt contact entry from a new Gtalk contact being merged with an existing normal one for the same person. What caused the syncing to stop was when this particular contact had its high resolution picture pulled from Google servers (by receiving a SMS from them), as the initial sync only pulls the low resolution image.
This sounds odd, but was reproducible with the corrupt contact. Deleting and recreating it was the fix, but unfortunately I only stumbled across which one it was by chance. So if you have a hunch that a particular contact has issues then it may be corrupted.

its sad to know in such a big community of biggies no one has a solution for my small problem:crying:
I guess I can only help you with the Facebook contacts being empty:
As far as I know Facebook is unable to sync contacts due to changes made to Android.
Changes that were specifically made because of Facebook.
From what I can recall (and that might be completely wrong) Facebook didn't really sync any information, it just linked some information and showed that info.
But as soon as you removed the app all that info would be gone too.
And that behaviour was not desired. (Although certain ROMs might still do that I guess.)
I can't help you with the other problem though.
What kind of changes are not synced? And where are you doing them?

Thanks but i figured out the Facebook sync issue its just because the app in all does not have the sync nature but u can do the same with a few sync app available on app store . the bigger issue is Google contact sync , everything else does but this just does not wanna sync after a few days span . i can delete all data it syncs again but that's not the real solution . its a short term fix .. i just want contacts to sync with my embedded account plain and simple.
Well i tried what you said i went thru all my 500+ contacts on the list to my as expected there were no entry with hi def pic except my own on from the Google + servers.
To make sure i even deleted my pic and tried to sync again but still the same old crap . I'm attaching a screen of the sync page which might give you a look.

Finally got it working for Facebook contacts, surely Facebook really know how to piss off people. Just FULL uninstall your current Facebook app and then download and install this old version of the app. http://www.apkmirror.com/apk/facebook-2/facebook/facebook-27-0-0-0-15-android-apk-download/ The app has its old Sync Contact options on the Setting menu and it will sync contacts on your phone book. Now I've heard that after syncing all contacts, it should be OK to update it on the Play Store.
Just updated Facebook to the latest version it the Sync Contacts sticked on the app itself.

This worked! It takes a bit for my FB contacts to load up again on my phone, but once they load, they have been automatically linking to their corresponding contacts in my contacts list (the default Contact List that comes with the original HTC One Android OS). I do not display my FB contacts with "All People" but the pictures from their FB profiles are starting to all flood in once again! Thank you so much for this! Now I just have to keep my phone from updating to the latest version of FB for Android, or else I will run back into the same issue.
Side Note: I called HTC regarding this issue, and the lady I spoke with said that HTC IS aware of the problem, HOWEVER, it is a Facebook problem, not a HTC problem, and all we can supposedly do is wait for FB to fix it. Ha! FB sucks, but I like having the pictures with the names, so until they get their heads out their asses, this is the best solution.
Cheers Mate!
EDIT: Before posting this reply I checked my phone because I was going to give my HTC One M8 info and Android OS info, but as I looked, Facebook must have already automatically upgraded to the newest version, putting right back in the same place... UGH! I hate FB. Maybe I can find another Contacts App that can handle this. SMH. FU FB!

HTC told me to contact Facebook directly, which I just did... Apparently they know about it, but it is an issue directly with Facebook's app. I will post any information I receive from them, IF I receive any... See my post from earlier today.

So far so good. That is what I just did, before repeating the above process. I did not realize I could turn off auto updates globally; I had FB Auto-Update off, but not globally for all my apps. Since I was connected to WiFi earlier, it instantly ignored my request not to update, and that is when it failed again. This is working so far, I will let you know if it ends up failing, again... Thanks much! :good:
I still have no fb contacts showing in my phone book. Sync is enabled. I'm puzzled! I have also noticed that I can't sync my htc account and the restore function is also greyed out.......

Hey man, sorry to hear you are having so many difficulties here. First off, I suggest you call HTC Support, which won't take long, they don't have any hold times, and they are typically very helpful, at least when I have called. Their number is 1-866-449-8358. They can help with the HTC account part you previously mentioned. IF not, let me know and I will post a fix for that. I am referring you to them because it may be an issue related directly to your personal account. If we can rule that out, then we can work on other options.
Now... regarding Facebook... did you install the older version suggested above in this thread? Once you have installed the older version, turn contact syncing on, choose "Sync with Existing Contacts," as shown in the picture provided. This will get your current Phonebook Contacts linked to their FB profiles and profile pics. Next, go into "Accounts and Sync" in Settings, and make sure you have Facebook listed there, click on it, and make sure that your actual account is listed there. If it is not there, you can easily add the account using the "+" symbol at the top right of "Accounts and Sync." Click that "+" symbol and follow the onscreen instructions. That is pretty easy. Now if it is already there, make sure "Auto-Sync" is turned on, you should see a switch at the top of "Accounts and Sync" for this, and it just has to be in the "On" position.
If you follow those steps above, there are just a few more steps, to make sure you get your Facebook contacts to appear in your contacts list/phonebook. First, you will have to open your contacts (if not already open), and then click the top left icon labeled "Phonebook," and under that word should most likely be "Multiple Sources," unless you only have one source of contacts selected, like I do, in which case it will just say the name of that source, which in my case is Google. To give you an idea of what that looks like for me, in Contacts, it says at the top left, "Phonebook" with "Google" below that, and these words are one big link for a drop down list. Now click on the drop down link (again, top left icon in Contacts, just under notification bar), and this drop down list will have all of your accounts that you have signed into in "Accounts & Sync" in Settings (which you should have set up previously when you visited that area, if you are following these steps in this order). Make sure "Facebook" is checked off, and that it has a number in parenthesis next to it (which is the number of Facebook "Friends" you have). You can also check off other contact lists that you would like to appear in your overall list, i.e. Twitter, LinkedIn, Google, Google+, Phone Contacts (which in my case is the AT&T Address book), SIM, etc. Once you select Facebook, and/or the other contacts, they should auto-populate your entire Phonebook/Contacts list. If you have duplicates, you may want to "Link" the contacts and/or "Merge" the contacts, which we can get into further later on if need be. (If you want to try this part alone, go to "Manage Contacts" in the top right drop down menu.
Quote this message in your next response, so I can see how you made out. IF you are still having issues, I will try my best to solve your problem(s). By quoting me, I get an email and I can respond faster. Also, if you can, send me your phone Model, and Android version. We can get this figured out for you, I promise, one way or another. Best of luck. :fingers-crossed:
Photos are back! I had done everything that you said but my phonebook list showed that I had 0 Facebook contacts. Since my last post my phone updated to 6.0. And I still had no fb contacts showing. I then allowed fb to update. All that was remove the option to allow link fb in my phonebook . Iuninstalled fb and reinstalled the earlyversion again and then the fb photos stated appearing... However, I still do not have the contact sync section showing at the bottom of the fb app setting menu. (Not that I'm worried by that )Thank youvery much for your help.
Facebook got back to me. They "no longer support Contacts Sync on the Facebook Android app." So the only way to do this is to follow the above steps. It is still working for me, as long as I do not update the app.
