[Q] Flashing Different Modems - Samsung Epic 4G Touch

Im fairly confident that I could do the right thing here, but there is always a fear that I will screw something upthe first time I try.
My E4GT is rooted, on a stock rom. A while back I used the auto rooter to upgdate to FF18, but now I want to manually flash to FI25, FI03, or FH23.
Is it really as simple as moving the ZIP to my SD card and flashing the new modem ZIP after wiping cacha and dalvik?
So, in theory I could flash ANY of the modems, correct?
Thanks guys!

Assuming that you have a custom recovery as well, yes you can. I take it you meant placing ff18 agats custom on.
:edit: And don't forget to update profile/prl after reboot as well.

I do have a custom recovery.
I want to get away from FF18 since Im having GPS and 3g signal issues. I'd like to be able to try out FI25 or FI03 switch when I want to.
Do I update the PRL/Profile normally through the setting in the phone?

Are you talking about going full ROM (rom/kernel/modem) or just modem only? I ask because from fi03 forward, there are changes concerning Wimax settings in all three aspects which help improve speed.
You can mix match modems across the board if you're not focused on 4g.

For the moment Im only looking at updating the modem. I need to read up on how to flash full roms. I did it a few years back on my Hero but Im a bit out of the loop right now and possibly bricking my phone is not an option.

Heh, went for a reply and hit thanks..
Anyway, mix and match from where you are. You have it right.

Need help soft bricked my device.

I was upgrading ics and phone got stuck then I turned off and on . Now lts bricked. When I turn on screen led is black , nothing on. Only notification light turn on when I turn on the phone or connect to any USB. When I connect to computer it doesnot recognize. Also phone doesnot go to recovery or download mode. I have tried everything like pressing diff combo buttons even USB jig. Any ideas before I take to store.
Sounds like brick city. Your symptoms are similar to most of is who had bricks.
Take a look around, there are a couple threads in general and the q&a. Maybe pull battery for a couple hours amd come back to it. Otherwise, head to store.
How do I turn my phone on?
Doesn't sound so "soft" if you can't get into recovery or download mode.
Good luck to you.

So you were on Gingerbread, wiped everything and tried to flash an ICS ROM and it bricked your phone? You can't get into download mode? (Hold volume down and power)

OK, yeah if you wiped anything in ICS recovery and have blue light you are done. People are doing OK with the format zip but that's not 100% safe either. Wiping individual partitions is dangerous right now. Well, hope things work out for you at Sprint store. They are getting stricter about that. Let us know how it goes

Whew.... I guess I was the lucky one. I have flashed like crazy and wiped like a madman in both the fc24 repack and fd02 repack. So far, the only thing that happened was a few errors (like mms not working or phone only able to call out, not receive) when flashing mijjz xplod mini. Just had to wipe a few more times, but is working like a champ (so people dont read this wrong, the ROM is just fine, it was my fault by trying to flash theme at same time without setting up the ROM first).

yeah dude, you're better off never using an ICS recovery. ICS recoveries offer nothing that GB recoveries can't do. the only thing gained is convenience and a huge risk of permabricking your phone. oh well, lesson learned (God knows I learned mine).
I've been using one click el29 Odin to go back to gb from ics leaks. My question is if I'm on an ics leak can I flash el26 kernel to go back without bricking?

If you use Odin or mobile odin, yes. I wouldn't recommend trying that through recovery.
Damn, the same thing happened to me with mijjz going from 3.2 to4.0. I even tried sending to mobile tech videos and they couldn't save it. I was using cwm and it froze midway through and it was done. All I get is a blue light.

Does this apply to GB recoveries like Rogue's CWM? I've been using that zip without issues so far but now I'm wondering if it's safe anymore.

even if your phone is really messed up they are making it impossible. thats the phase im in right now.
Do yourself and everyone a favor and just buy a new phone. It isn't fair to all of the people who can read that you didn't read some simple instructions and are going to try and scam sprint to get a new phone. Either buy a new phone full retail (500 at corporate) or buy a phone used. Take it as an expensive lesson to actually read for once.

Credits
Thanks go to the following:
- Garwynn for the making of the repacks and the mentoring!
- sfhub for the original information
- sextape for FL16 stock restore
- rwilco12 for advice and hosting
- rainmotorsports, dev-host for hosting
- TrayLunch - Excellent Team member!
- Forum Members for their support and hopefully feedback on these builds!
Make sure you give them any thanks for this build - they did far more than I on this! :highfive:
This is a match of sextape's FL16 stock restore with only root added to applicable packages.
This means it should behave completely as if it is stock or released by either OTA/Kies.

Previously, it has been ok to go up with a no data, just can't go back.
My suggestion is to make a nandroid backup prior, then trying.
If you prefer, I can test for you before you make the move.
One thing to consider its the partitioning and this may be the reason colonel.shepard said no.

Generally Nodata versions are good for when flashing between same android versions or just wanting to make sure you're on just plain rooted stock. (or stock if the case may be). In this particular case I'm inclined to recommend backing everything up and doing the full restore instead.
thank you been waiting for this for a while.. merry Christmas everyone

Current Stock OTA?

I have been rooted on custom Rom's for so long now and lost my stock backup, I don't even know what the current release is. I refuse to go back to stock unless I have to. Just curious.

I believe any TW-based ROM should work fine with the diagnostic codes and tests. If you're on AOSP, you definitely won't be able to use the dialer codes. If it were me, I'd probably flash Freeza's stock rooted rom before contacting them, just to make sure it works.
I was thinking about doing that, actually going completely back to stock. But I was hoping I might be able to avoid the hassle.

Flashing Freeza's rom shouldn't be too much hassle... just make a nandroid so you can restore your previous ROM once done.

I see your post in StrongSteves rom thread. You should be fine on that rom, it is based on stock so you will be able to run all tests and diagnostics if they ask you to.
Just post in one place next time. And give more info as we cant guess what's going on.
Thanks for the help guys. I wasn't sure where to post, cause I wasn't sure if it was rom.specific.

[Q] problem when talking out to others

I am on Scotts rom 5.0 ad when call and talk to someone the receiver doesn't understand me half the time. Tis has gone on for a while even on different roms. It sometimes works better when I am on an aosp rom but I still have problems. I have went back to stock and I didn't change anything.
The only thing I can think of is that maybe flashing 4.1 and 4.2 and 4.3 roms could have tweaked it out somehow?
Does anyone have an answer before I call ATT?
thanks for any help thrown my way!
