Coming from an Evo and kind of lost...... - Samsung Epic 4G Touch

Hello everyone I recently bought this touch off of craigslist and am utterly confused on the root process, flashing roms, etc...... First off it was already rooted and using CWM recovery. I found this out after I figured out how to boot into recovery on my new to me phone lol. With the Evo there were some growing pains but I figured it out pretty fast and was flashing like crazy in a couple of days. It's seems this phone is a whole new beast. Im living it so far but I need to know exactly what im up against since I see the phrase "brick your phone way too much already". I've read some threads already but can't quite wrap my mind around it yet so im reaching out, and yes I plan to do a while lot of reading just like I did with the OG Evo. That's not an option right now since my lil sister has been in the ICU in the hospital and I've been spending every waking hour there. Anyway I would just like to know where I stand with the room that is presently on the phone already and what I can do if I wanted to flash something else. Anyway thx for any help given and to those who will surely tell me to read, read, read I will, will, will lol.

Read all the stickies in the Android Development section. Look up QBKing77 on youtube and watch his videos about this phone. They will show you how to safely root, flash, etc.

Thx for responding and I will def check that out. I would just like to know what the previous owner did to root the phone if you could look at the screen shoot and give me an ideal. I asked him but he said someone rooted it for him and he didn't have much info. I also asked him off he was on XDA and he said no but he browsed an epic 4g forum but I didn't press him since I knew I could just come here and find out ask I needed to know. Anyway thx for that info.

Whoops, accidentally hit the thanks button
Anyway it was most likely originally rooted using the EL29 one click found here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1433101
This just installed stock firmware (gingerbread build) on the phone that was rooted. From there he probably upgraded to ics using the recovery built in with the EL26 kernel. Most recoveries are safe to use now, just make sure you thoroughly read the OP.
There was also an exploit through which it could have been rooted, but that was patched long ago.

Thank you for that info. One other question. Is there something I have to flash to be able to enable usb storage so I can move files btw my phone and pc/mac? I read in one of the thread that Samsung removed this feature at some point.

Look in the android development section. It appears you have the Universe rom from several versions back. I would recommend starting off stock rooted for learning purposes. We have a 1 click method for this and you can learn more from the development section and the qbking videos. FI27 is the most recent build number. I have not tried it yet. Last build I ran was FI03.
After you flash a stock rooted rom you will need to flash a kernel. I always used agats kernel and consider it safe. Good luck and read, read, read before you jump into anything.

No problem this phone can be a bit confusing at first. Lots of terms, letters, numbers, kernels but it will all make sense quickly.

Thx for all the help I have since flashed Agat recovery with stock FH13 rom and Universe 2.3 and am now on the way to fully exploring my phone.

Sounds like you are on the right track. I dont think I ever tried Universe rom. I have mostly been on Aosp based roms the past few months.

Universe rom is neat. I would suggest checking out blazer, calkulins or re-calk, and blu kuban. Those have been some of my favorites.
Sent from my SPH-D710 using XDA

If you plan on checking out Kuban,I recommend the link in my sig. The flash procedure also works for many other roms, but until you are really comfortable I would always follow the op directions in whatever ROM you choose to flash. You picked a good phone with a great community. Lots of very helpful people here, even though we lost quite a few to the s3.

I have an OG EVO and my wife has the E4GT. I rooted it yesterday afternoon in about 15 minutes' time. Definitely not the same as rooting the EVO. While it's different, I think it swayed me towards going with the SGS III when my upgrade comes up next month. Looking forward to playing with the E4GT some more-if the wife lets me

I hear you, I never even played with an E4GT before I bought it I just saw how great the S3 looked and felt in the sprint store and loved it. Since I refuse to sign a new 2 year contract I always stay at least a model behind and just go to craigslist.

htc phones and samsung are quite different i had an evo and it takes me twice as long to root it compared to samsung. but samsung seems easier to brick.

Congrats man on the new phone. No the rooting process I'd going to be different on the epic. Sfhub has created a one touch root method that is definitely the most user friendly, and is highly recommended.

Great choice man on a phone but forget the way you thought with the Evo in some cases and do hardcore reading up on your new phone prior to doing anything since it will save the million and one questions you may ask. Check out the wiki section as well for some great tips. Enjoy and welcome aboard - just do me a favor and read read and then read some more

Thank you....I do like the thinness of the phone compared to my evo.....it is pretty large though!
I am VERY familar with rooting and restoring roms on my evo, I think I did it about 100+ times.
It was pretty simple, download Unrevoked and bam! I am looking at Odin and Sfhub's one touch root method.....so...One of them should be fine.
I dont understand what the modems are used for. Do most ROMS come with them? I understand that they are used to communicate with Carrier towers...but is the higher version always better? What are they compared to on an Evo, if at all.
Thanks!

IMO the best method to root then install cwm is to.flash rooted el29 with the Odin method than use the one click to install cwm. Thats how I did it at least.

Yeah, I just got mine last night and this is what I plan on doing at work today. Mine is on el29 so as I understand it I would want to flash rooted el29 then install cwm in autoroot. Once I've had it for a few days I'll probably start testing out third party roms but I have a weird thing where I like to run stock(ish) for a little bit just so I get to know the phone and know what "baseline" performs like. Also, I already like this phone stock more than the Evo with Sense. Touchwiz seems much less intrusive and overly glossy. Only little annoyance I have is that when I did OTA update to el29 I lost scrolling wallpaper so I may jump to calkulins rom just to get that back.

please don't flash the international ics rom either..... *drops mic and walks away*
Ive had my Epic 4g Touch for a couple of days now. Im coming from the Evo 3D. Touchwiz sucks compared to sense but this phone feels more powerful and smooth. Evo 3D also has a bigger dev support here in xda. Hopefully this changes considering this is a relatively new phone. I love the big screen on this phone and how thin it is. Im keeping it untill HTC comes out with at 4.5+ inch phone. Go to youtube and looks for qbkimg77 videos on this phone. They are very helpful.

First of all unrevoked is only for HTC devices in the Dev section you will find the Auto root its quite simple not as Unrevoked but quite helpful, then I would recomend you to run stock with root a couple of days and start with Calkulin's ROM, UnNamed, and other stockish roms with goodies and then flash everything you like as kernels(Rogue Hitman, LosKernel, etc) Modems(EG30, EK02, EL29, etc) of course rooted and other ROMs (CM7, CM9, etc) and always have a backup and Odin installed in your computed

Finally Got This Phone

I used my upgrade from my Nexus S 4g and decided to come over the the S2 on Sprint. I intend to play with this phone till my wife upgrade is in August which she will take the S2 in hopes that I will get the S3 by then.
Been reading up on these posts on here and I think I got it but wanted to make sure.
1. I need to Odin to get root with el29?
2. Never flash, wipe, reset data in ICS CWM?
3. Is it me or are there no Kernels like AirKernel for this phone?
4. I plan to go with CNA as I had on my Nexus. Love that rom anything you would like to share about this rom?
Any advice on the questions would be great and to be honest I really only post here and there but I'm always on here. Been here since the release of the Evo 4G.
Thanks.
Thanks and it awesome to be a part of the S2 community. WOW.
Really feels welcome here......

Glad I moved onto another phone, you guys really suck here
OP, you should get a GN. After my first post there, I was sent a 4 course meal from my favorite restaurant.
xda same as always...
Stoked to be here though.
Sort of asking for help, those are things that I've read up on. Just kind of a ice breaker more then anything.
Welcome to the party and congrats on the new phone.
The only question I can answer is #1, which is yes, to get an easy start just Odin sfhub's one-click EL29 for root, then read, read, read in the development section for all the goodies available.
Happy flashing and remember, if you brick your phone it's all on you.
1. I rooted just fine without Odin.
2. Yes it's also recommended you do that with most roms overall to avoid technical difficulties later on.
3. Idk what airkernel is, but there seems to be a limited choice if kernels for ginger.
4. CNA? Don't think I've seen a ROM called that around here but what do I know? I'm just a newbie...

You just have to have thicker skin over here, people may seem a little harsh at times (me included) but at the core of their comments you typically find the truth you needed. If you read around enough you'll see there are a lot of good people in this community. I'd suggest you start with the thread below to see what I mean.

Most important of all, just follow the #1 rule of thumb for the internet, don't take things personally and you'll be just fine.
Oh, also, don't expect anyone here to a)kiss your butt (well maybe iSaint j/k lol), b)hold your hand or c)pat you on your wee little noggin when you f*ck up because you didn't read and ended up bricking your phone. That is all.
Everybody moved to the Evo One. This place is a ghost town now.

Coming from a Evo then a Nexus S 4G I can't believe the trouble ones has to go through flashing roms that are ICS.
Odin is easy so that is nice but still. Seems like a lot of effort.
This phone is sweet. I just got to wait till I actually have time from work, kids and family so I can sit down and root this think and flash away.
Excited.
I can honestly say if it weren't for Odin and sfhub's one-click goodies I would probably still just be an observer on this forum. But he made it easy and then I learned to flash recovery and in doing so was able to start flashing Calkulin's custom ROMs. Although that's as far as I've gotten for now it's a long way from where I began and I'm excited for what's around the corner.

Once the source is released and official ota's are out im sure all the kinks will be ironed out. Development for ICS is still early for this phone. Using Odin isnt that bad, you can still flash a rom in about five minutes.

It may seem a bit overwhelming at first but it really is incredibly easy. Just make sure your CWM is stock (just flash CM7 or GB Miui), and then you should have no issues flashing ICS.

Not if you follow the proper directions.
Also I think everyone should invest a few bucks in "Mobile ODIN Pro" and root file explorer. Those two apps are all you need to ensure you are safe. Check MD5's and such with root explorer, and mobile ODIN pro lets you safely odin kernels, modems, roms, stock roms, etc with built in MD5 checking.

I just wanna warn you that sometimes when following an OP's instructions, you may accidentally make a mistake. Therefore I advise you first to understand what you are flashing before you flash it. I.e. in case you don't already know, learn what a kernel is, what different types of kernels are, what not to do (read the brick thread - I think it's a sticky), etc. Also, remember to always make nandroids and check md5 sums.

Switching from EVO4G to Epic Touch - Where do I start?

Hey guys,
After two years of use, I finally managed to shatter the screen on my HTC EVO 4G. Now that I'm due for an upgrade, I'm going with Epic Touch 4G as LTE network won't be in my area for another year.
I've been browsing the forums and after lots of reading, my head is spinning.
There's all these acronyms.. like FF18 I don't understand.
I'm getting a brand new Samsung SII Epic Touch 4G tomorrow from a Sprint Store.
I plan on using some form of Cyanogenmod if available.
There are TONS of root threads that I've found - Where do I start? Which one should I go with?
Sorry if it's noobie questions, but I appreciate any answers. Thanks!
Read the stickies sections in the forums. Ff18 is a ice cream sandwich build, its just the build date. F=2012 f=June 13th. Fh13= 2012 August 13th etc. Qbking77 has helpful videos on YouTube. Just read in the forums a lot and read the stickies section and you will pick it up. Enjoy the phone. It depends on what build you are on to root. Sfhub has one clicks for every build I think.

You're better off going to qbking77 videos on YouTube. He is really credible and will help you get comfortable with roms on this device. After a few roms you will more easily download and flash roms on your own.

That's exactly what I did, I found that it was weird I had to on some roms flash modem and kernel separate. I'm still getting used to flashing roms on this phone. But so far i like it and haven't had any crappy comments on my questions or had my questions ignored. This is a decent group of people here willing to help out.

I have never had to flash a rom that required you to flash a modem. are you rooted? go to settings, about phone, go down to kernel version and tell me what you see. for me i have fh13. if you are on the official samsung version it should be after sph-d710 (two letters and two numbers no spaces)

No rom will require a modem to be flashed. As modems are sepreate from the roms. Only time you will flash a rom/kernel/modem all in one is the one click .tar odin. You can flash modems independently.

get mobile odin $5 on the playstore or pirate. it will allow you to flash a rom with clockworkmod and then follow the specific rom instructions.

Hey guys, thanks so much for all the help.
I have successfully rooted my Epic 4G Touch and flashed CM9 Alpha 6 on it.
Thanks SO much to QBKing77 for his very intuitive and simple videos.
My next question involves CM9 and Wireless Hotspot
I noticed that whenever I activate Hotspot, my 4G disconnects and falls back to 3G.
I have searched on Google and saw that this is a relatively common problem, but is there a fix? If not, are there any other AOSP ICS-based ROMs I could use that have portable wifi hotspot available with 4G?
Thanks again guys.

I'm not to familiar with cm9 but I'm pretty sure there is a lot of nightly builds for cm9 better then alpha 6.

Flash-aholic Withdrawal

Well my fellow flashers, it's been 2 weeks since I picked up this bad boy from Best Buy in Black Friday. I've been holding off rooting and flashing a ROM. Abstinence is not for everyone and it's definitely not for me in this situation. Once you've been to the Dark Side, there's no going back.
Now to starting testing the new flavors of Android. Thanks to all of the device of Android. My Captivate has served me well because of you all. My daughter sincerely appreciates it.

now be careful and don't lose your IMEI by flashing roms - make a backup of your NV items

Yeah he's right. Don't flash ANYTHING until you backup your IMEI. You never know when you're going to lose it, or if you will lose it.

Wow and you call your self a flashaholic we have to pull your flashaholic card I also came from a captivate and I had my sgs3 without flashing for maybe ten minutes (the time it took to download stuff included time to find right kernel, etc.)
I didn't even know what the stock Rom looked like I turned in my phone had some juice on the battery and I flashed away
Had to try the new update just to see what it looks like, although I ran frosty for a while but was flashing something everyday even with official I have been flashing stuff just to get my flash on(mostly apps and addons) to get my fix until 4.2 roms start coming out, for now I have also flashed the 4.2 camera back on and little mods here and there mostly cosmetic and audio upgrades but at first sign of 4.2 or some rom that gives me new stuff to pay with I'm flashing official rom away

I was a noob and this very thing happened to me. It scared the hell out of me but thanks to the guides and tools and people here at least have peace of mind that this was the first android phone I flashed roms with, IMEI got wiped after a random reboot playing around with LED settings then.. I was able to restore it myself without having a backup!
!! Its never over flash away but make the backup first it will save a lot of sweat!
I have been on Sony phones until last week so I am trying a rooted stock for a while before I start flashing other roms.
