MicroSD Card Issues - T-Mobile, Samsung Galaxy SIII

Hi, I have a problem with my patriot signature microsd 32gb on my 16gb Samsung Galaxy SIII which I use as a music and picture storage for my music player and camera
The phone is rooted and is running stock ROM and kernel
The problem:
1)when transferring music files while the sd card is in the phone, using a usb and explorer method of copying and pushing sometimes the write protected warning pops up, other times the file would copy but I could not find it in my music player/gallery, other times the file is present for a period of time but after a restart of my phone the file disappears.
NOTE: However, files that I have transferred using the microsd adapter and directly through the computer does not change at all.
2)On the default camera I have set up the external sd card as the default location for pictures, but when I take a picture sometimes the warning that "sd card cannot be located and default storage is changed back into phone"
3)On Android Commander when I try to push music files it always ends up as permission denied
4)When I try to copy music through the windows explorer this message pops up "the device has either stopped working or is not responding"
What I attempted:
I thought it was a formatting problem and so I tried to format the sd card using both my phone and pc into the phone's desired FAT32 format,
but the problem persists.
I have also inserted the sd card into the adapter and put the write protected switch up thinking it was a permissions problem
Is it a faulty card? or am I doing something wrong?
Additional Note:
1)I have both ES file explorer and Root explorer and when I attempt to change the permission on my external sd card which usually appears in ES file explorer as "rwx-rwx-r(blank)x" it always fails
2)When opening the gallery and trying to view some of the photos saved in the external sd card, it would appears as unable to load and just a black screen.
3)I also export playlists from itunes in m3u format and puts it in a playlist folder in the sd card but it would never appear when I try to see it in a file explorer, although using poweramp I can import the list, but the old ones that I have placed on the card is also present unable to find them or delete them in either the phone or the pc
I have really became desperate trying to solve this problem
Please help me

Try reformatting as exFat. Also I don't think you can change the permissions on the entire sdcard.
It could also be that the phone connects using MTP. There's an app here on xda called sgs3 easy ums. It will mount the card as a UMS device. Try transferring that way.
I think the sgs3 was intended to use the exFat format though.

Have you tried this?

I have a problem with my card right now for my SDS3 (see sig) but my problem is completely different from yours. Hope that helps solve your problem.

That's weird. If it doesn't pick up your card then the problem might be more serious than you think. But how can you see the contents and be able to format it yet utilities like Easus and SDFormatter can't see the drive? Did you try disconnecting all USB flash drives, your phone or other devices connected to your computer first? Check explorer and see to it that your card is the only one connected with a drive letter. Go to SDFormatter, hit refresh and make sure the drive letter is chosen.
SDFormatter just fixed the problem I was having.

You said you were rooted stock. Did you do any debloating or anything else to it. I doubt its the case but maybe something needed was accidentally removed.
Have you tried running fix permissions in recovery or TiB?
Also, how did you root? Was it recent and did the card function properly before? If you used odin to flash a rooted fw, maybe it was a bad download?
If all else fails, you could try reflashing the full stock fw with Odin.

1)I didn't do any debloating for my phone, and how do you run fix permissions in recovery? or TiB?
2)I root my phone by following this guide "How to Root U.S. and Canada Galaxy S3 SGH-T999/SGH-I747/SPH-L710! [Fail-Proof][Noob-Proof][U.S. Cellular]" using odin
3)So by reflashing the full stock fw do you mean I need to factory reset? or Is it possible to download the stock fw somewhere?
Sorry I am new to android, so please bear with me

Sorry, coulda sworn you could run fix permissions in Titanium....
You should be able to do this in cwm or twrp recovery. May be in the advanced menu. You can install the recovery from Rom or Goo Manager app.
Factory reset wipes all user data taking you back to an out of the box state.
You can get a pre rooted version of the FW from here.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1771687
This is the original LE6 version though, if you want the updated LH2 version give me a few min to get the link for you.
Follow directions in that thread to flash with Odin.

i will definitely try it as soon as i can!

Let us know how it goes. If noting at all seems to work, try borrowing a sdcard and see if it acts the same.
Could always just be a problem elwith the card itself

I had a patriot 16gb class 10.. when it works.. it's awesome should be called class 15 or something lol. However there were three times it randomly corrupts.. lost all my pictures and crap. A format usually fixes it. After the second time... i learned to put my photos to default internal memory. The third time i was no longer able to format it... couldn't move files in or out but i can open them?! I went with the high amount of 5 star reviews but should've listened to them 1-2 star reviews. They don't do well with phones. And your problem is a problem that occurred to me every now and then. Remember to back up your card frequently before it crashes!
Sent from my SGH-T999 using xda app-developers app

ah, problem
so I tried followed the link and the steps to flash the fw
but I am encountering this problem of when odin is done and the phone is restarting the "process android.process.acore has stopped" along with touchwiz and poweramp.
I reflashed twice and the problem remains
I even cleared dalvik cache and regular cache and fixed permissions with cwm and rebooted but it still did not fix the problem
Do I have to factory reset now?
:crying:

I can't remember which app it is or if this is the one requiring factory reset. Can you boot and get to settings > app manager? If so clear data on google services framework. Maube also touchwiz home. (Can't remember for sure)
You could also try using the built in file manager in twrp. Go to /data/data and look for those folders and delete them. May not work but worth a try.

ya thanks for the advice but it didn't work
From what I can tell the only solution now is to do a factory reset
anyways so why did the fw not work for me?
i even made sure i downloaded the correct wind one
at least now maybe with the factory fw i can make sure the external sd card works?

so factory reset is done
external sd card still does not want to work via "my file" folder creation
I don't know is it broken? I would like to try another sd card but I need to find one
although I did test it with h2testw and no error message popped up.
It wrote and verified fine.

Sometimes left over data can cause problems with a newly flashed system. Odin didn't wipe your apps or data and something was left behind that conflicted with setup or something like that. Sorry it came down to that man.
Ive heard a few times over the past couple years of sdcards working fine in one device but not at all in another. It seems rare and I'm not sure why it happens, but it can.
Only way to know for sure is to borrow a known good sdcard and try it. If it also doesn't work then its most likely a problem with the phone. If it works then you probably need to replace the card. Maybe take it to the store where you got it and let them try. That way if it doesn't work you have a witness that can note your account of the issue.

SD Card Reader No Longer Working?

My SD card reader seems to have stopped working today. When I reboot the phone, it states it is reading the SD card, and 1 second later it is finished. Now, I can't access any data on the SD card via system programs, music, gallery, movies, etc...
I can use ES Explorer and see and use contents on the SD card, so I don't think the SD card is corrupt. How can I check my SD card reader program and see if that is the problem? Does anyone have a fix for this issue?
Edit: I am using SleeperROM 3.0.0 and the only problem I am having is the SD card reader app isn't working on boot or after unmounting/mounting the SD card. I can access all files via PC or ES Explorer.

Ok, does anyone know how to reinstall the system card reader "software" that seems to be malfunctioning? I can't even access Titanium Backup because the system won't recognize the SD card even though ES File Explorer and my PC (when USB connected) will!

I haven't done anything like that to my knowledge. What is a .nomedia file?
Any way to reinstall the system SD card reader?

Guys, I've noticed this going on a lot lately across several devices and different platforms of Android.
I think something might be wrong, as in some type of infected app we're all using.
I can't think of any other correlation between the many people suddenly experiencing this all at once across several different devices, many different ROMs, and completely different versions of Android.
I had a .nomedia file magically appear on the root of my internal storage on my Nexus several times today, and even after removing it my media would not be recognized at all, as well as the file would return every so often.
Someone should look into this.
Sent from my AOSP Android 4.1.1 Galaxy Nexus
I looked throughout the root directory and did not find any .media files.
Is there a way to "reinstall" the system SD Card reader app that autoruns when the phone reboots or the usb is disconnected after a file transfer?
Mine runs for only 1 second then states "media scan complete."
I am thinking my SD card reader app went bad today, if that is even a possibility. The CPU and ES Explorer recognize and play all files using non-system integrated apps (music, video, gallery being the system apps).
Also, all the apps installed to the SD Card are running fine.

Same here....... I downloaded paranoid android 1.9.9 and everything was fine until a reboot and all my pictures and music disappeared from my sd card...... Now mind you that I have flashed tons of roms .... But this has never happened to me ever...... The funny thing is that when I do a back up which I did minutes before my sd card went bad..... After my backup boots up I can see my pictures and music again.... But not for to long...... What can I do.........?

"Released a fix for ROM Manager where missing directories were causing the .nomedia file to be placed in the wrong directory. This was causing missing pictures from the gallery app. Sorry about that! Fixed in 5.0.1.4."
So even though CWM can read the SD card contents and install a zip file if needed it is a CWM problem? My CWM didn't update until today. I will reboot and see what happens.

I was having the same issue yesterday and installed a bunch of roms thinking it was CM9 but I looked and found that file strangely. Deleted after searching using my computer and POOF! all my stuff reappeared. Thanks!
Just an update. After the CWM update this morning and a reboot, the problem seems to be fixed now. The only other problem was that all my play lists on my music app were messed up. I had to restore data from Titanium Backup in order to get them to work properly. All good so far!

Hi all. I tried a new backup earlier then i tried a recover of said backup. No md5 match found when i chose that backup. Now i try a backup and no /sdcard also a no suitable error msg.. what happened it was running smothly.. i have clockwork touch. You will need to be more specific when you say sdcard...the GS3 has an internal storage that is considered an SD card in android, as well as an external SD Micro slot beside the sim card. It sounds like maybe your internal storage has become corrupted possibly. Do you have a file explorer app? If so can you browse to /sdcard? Are there any files there? If there are and you can open them then it could just be a bad backup, if you cant then the storage is corrupt. If it is corrupted a format will fix you up at the exspense of losing whatever may be on it. If a format fails to correct the problem you likely have a defective device. Try accessing the internal sdcard manually and let us know what happens. As far as the external storage goes, unless you have installed an SD Micro in your phone nothing will happen when you try to backup to it as it is, in fact, empty.
Yes i can root explore to them both i have micrs sd also. Sorry for not clarifying. I could use to backup to external.. no more. Guess ill try and format thrm?? Sorry for typos using phone. Woah, easy there tiger....there is an edit button if you need to make changes to a post. Im sure the modderators are not going to be too happy with a quadruple post! :silly:
On to your issues, yes i have noticed with CMW recovery the dating system seems to be borked, atleast with the last 5.x version i used which does make deciding which file to restore from. The fact that you are getting MD5 mismatches seems to confirm the fact that your flash memory file system is corrupt, or possibly you have a bad recovery all together. If you can explore to the sd card you can copy the data off of it to a safer location while you determine the exact problem so as no to loose anything that could possibly be good. I would also recommend you download Clockwork Rom Manager from the market and install the latest recovery, 6. something or other. This may solve you problems all together.
P.S. - I got the error about android-secure.img every time i restorded (the error shows during the backup also if i recall) with CMW but it didnt seem to have any effect on the restore process
Yes i forgot to edit.my bad im on my phone. I uninstalled the cwm i had on phone redownloaded from playstore. Solved my date prob. So i must have downed a bad copy from a diff thread vs thr play store.. formatted both sd cards.. so lost tons but hey starting fresh aint so bad. With the premium cwm is touch included i could use free version.. thats what i did last time and had the isuue from manually install. Thanks for your help.

You're welcome, glad to hear you got it sorted it out :good:. I have recently switched to TWRP recovery which seems to me to be a bit more reliable, although i have not used CWM's touch so i dont have any ground for comparison and this perception could simply be a placebo effect.

Baseband Unknown / Internal storage showing 0.00 space

Spent the better part of yesterday fighting this and I'm cooked. I can get any ROM to load. I just have no data other than Wifi. Baseband shows unknown in About phone and I can manually load a modem. Makes no difference. Convinced it's related to the storage issue. Was not able to format anything on the internal card in CWM so went to TWRP and was able to fix the Can't mount /sdcard and /data issue. But didn't help the storage issue inside the ROM(s).
I can't tell you exactly what I've done step by step becaue I literally worked on the phone for 6 or 7 hours yesterday between ODIN and custom recoveries.
Anyone seen anything like this? I can do some screenshots but what happens when I go to settings and storage is I see a brief screen flash of the various storage capacities. ex applications (calculating), Pictures and Video (calculating) Videos (calculating) etc... but then all but the Applications disappears. I am left with Total Space 0.00B and Applications 373MB. The external card is fine. Total Space, Available Space Unmount etc...
What appears to be happening is I have no internal storage available other than the 2GB or so that the system takes. Camera immediately gives errors and auto switches to external card. If i pull the card I can't take pictures. this from a newly formatted SDCard in TWRP.
I actually did this to my phone on purpose. T-Mobile rep would not honor my exchange request for a screen issue claiming they could not see what I was talking about. So I came home and flashed the .pit and bootloader from a chinese Note 1. It made my baseband, IMEI and all data dissapear. The internal storage was also borked from the pit file I flashed. Same camera issue, and the gallery would immediately close saying it had insuffiecnt space. My best advice would be to flash a stock tar/md5.

[Q] Can't Flash ROMS

So whenever I try to flash a ROM I get the following error:
E: unable to open zip file
Erorr flashing zip '/external_sd/Infamous_S4_v2.5.zip'
Updating partition details
I've had the problem since yesterday and have searched different threads with the same error but none seem to have a solution.
I've read that it could be the file and I have since redownloaded the same ROM several times and downloaded different ROMs and all give the same error.
I've ODINed back to stock and re-rooted and reflashed the TWRP recovery.
I've formatted my SD card which was a HUGE pain but it was one of the suggested ideas in the other threads.
And I STILL get the same error. I have no idea what else to do. I was fine on Infamous s4 2.4. I wiped and flashed 2.5 and i lost my status bar. Someone suggested to download and reflash and that's when the problem started.
I got that error, as well
What I had to do was to download it on a computer and use a cable to transfer it to my phone.

Ive downloaded 3-4 times. I've also tried other ROMs. I tried to go back to Infamous 2.4 it wont flash. I flashed the google edition and it did work. The wicked rom also works. But v 2.5 and 2.4 of infamous don't flash.
I did not try flashing from internal. But I guess since I got wicked working I will just stick with that

Can you browse through the zips either through a file browser or on your computer? I kept getting that error with Faux kernel a while back. Thought I'd try to browse through the file on my computer and it would tell me it was an invalid file or something of that sort. I downloaded the same file maybe 8-10 times before I got one I could open; coincidentally enough, the one I could browse was the only one that would flash. What I'm saying, if you can't open the file, then it's a bad/corrupt file; regardless of whether you've downloaded it multiple times or not. If you CAN open it, then the problem would lie elsewhere.
Check your recovery and make sure its updated
I had same problem. It's a bad download. I got it 3 times from same rom and was determined to get it to work. Either download to computer or if using your phone make sure to download from different links. I couldn't navigate through the zip either. So maybe it was a bad upload or download.

You guys are right. Even though some I downloaded on a computer, I just tried opening with root Explorer and the files wouldn't open but the good files did open. I guess that was it all along. I've never had so many problems downloading roms before. Wish I had known before wiping my phone and sd card lol

I had same problem. It's a bad download. I got it 3 times from same rom and was determined to get it to work. Either download to computer or if using your phone make sure to download from different links. I couldn't navigate through the zip either. So maybe it was a bad upload or download.

I have been having the same problem ever since I downloaded and flashed the GE 4.3. I can't even restore my backups that I have been using just fine before I flashed GE. I have noticed however that the problem only exists with my backups on my external SD card. The one backup I have on my internal is the only one I can restore. I don't think its a bad download problem, only because it's causing my MD5's on my external to mismatch, when I never had that problem before GE. I downloaded Infamous 2.6 4 different times to my computer and none of them have worked. I really want this as I like the GE (not Jamison's Rom GE) but it just doesn't give me what I want. I want Infamous 2.6. HELP!!:fingers-crossed:

If 4.3 changed external file handling again, you'd theoretically get that response again until you wiped both external and internal storage so it could be set up as 4.2 format again. Just backup both to your computer and move things back afterward.

I don't see how it could be GE4.3 doing that. I flashed 4.3 a few days ago and decided to go back to TW; my backup worked perfectly. All of my backups work and all of my flashable zips work. I store nothing on my internal storage; it's more like temporary storage until I move it to the SD.

I havent had issues with backups so far thankfully. I use titanium to backup and restore my apps. I've also never had any issues flashing ROMs before and I've been doing it for years.
As the previous poster suggested, it seems I keep getting bad downloads for infamous roms no matter what server I use to download. For now I have switched to wicked rom and like it.

Yeah, the backup problem is curious... not sure what could have gone wrong there, but the problems with downloading Infamous would most assuredly be a bad download. Would have nothing to do with the file system on the SD card if the zip can't even be opened on the computer to which it was downloaded.

After I posted, I was browsing my photos that I took last night of my kids enjoying the fireworks. I noticed that a lot of them were just not showing up in the gallery, and the videos would give me a could not play this file error message. So I thought maybe if I unmounted and remounted the SD card it would fix the problem, like it used to with my GS2. Well once I unmounted it, it would not remount. So I took it out and placed it in my tablet. Nothing. So I restored stock 4.2.2 and when I rebooted it said my SD card was corrupted and needed to be reformatted. I lost all my pics :crying: Oh well. that's the risk I run by flashing ROMS. So I am downloading Infamous 2.6 once again. Here's hopin.

Pop the card into your computer and format to FAT32. That should get it into working order.

[Q] Bricked?

OK, I'm in a bit of a pickle and am hoping that someone with more knowledge can help me out. This is what I did.
Rooted the phone
Installed FreeGee
Installed TWRP through FreeGee
Copied a new rom to SD card
Entered TWRP and ERASED EVERYTHING BEFORE MAKING A BACKUP
Couldn't load rom from SD card
When navigating through the TWRP directory, there is a folder titled SD card. I thought my ROM would be in there, but it is not. I know I should have done two things that I didn't.
Backup my data
Copy the ROM to root folder like the instructions said to,
But I didn't do those thing. Now, I have a phone that will enter TWRP, but I cannot get it to find any ROMs I put on the SD card. Is there anything I can do to remedy this situation that I have caused?
Thanks an advance for your ideas.
Try connecting the phone to your computer and manually copying over another ROM.
If you didn't copy it to external card, and you wiped internal, then you don't have an operating system and need to use LG flashtool to get back to stock.

It is definitely on the external card, but I cannot see it via TWRP. I am getting ready to use flashtool to see if that fixes the problem. I will update my progress.
Thanks.

If you are using the hacked TWRP go up a level a couple of times and look for ext-card.

I guess I don't have hacked TWRP

The TWRP that I am using was the one click install from FreeGee. It looks like this is not the hacked TWRP. When going up as many levels as I can, this is what I get. For future reference, do you know where I can get the hacked TWRP?
Current Progress - In the process of downloading LGE980AT-01-V10g-310-410-APR-03-2013.zip to use with LG Flashtools. Not the fastest server, but am very thankful that someone is hosting this file.

Tap at the top where it says "Internal Storage." It should let you switch to the external SD.

When I do that, I can only choose internal storage. I'm guessing that's one of the reasons there is a hacked TWRP.

IIRC, the hacked TWRP is merely to ensure that the Official CM builds (which are marked for e986 only) can be installed on any LGOG Pro phone. You should still be able to see the external SD even with the FreeGee TWRP. Try fooling around in TWRP a little bit and see if you can get it to recognize the external SD.
Fixed It
Well, I tried looked throughout TWRP and could not find a resolution.
What did work was LGFlashTool and madmacks awesome instructions. Thanks everyone for your ideas.

OK, next time, if you forget to backup before you flash, boot your phone into TWRP recovery, select mounts and then mount usb storage, connect your phone to the PC and you should see in "my computer" the phone as a drive, copy the ROM you want to flash to that drive, if it is a CM ROM remember to copy the Gapps also. Disconnect from the PC and then continue with the ROM flashing procedure that we all are so familiar with. This way it saves you the trouble of having to go back to stock again in order to flash a custom ROM.
Glad you got it fixed.
