[Q] Error upgrading firmware to PDA:LJ1 / PHONE:LIH / CSC:LJ1 (AFR) - Galaxy Note II Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi guys, just got a Note 2 here. Kies popped up a firmware upgrade notice when I connect the phone with computer to update from:
Current firmware version : PDA:LIH / PHONE:LIH / CSC:LIA (AFR) to
Latest firmware version : PDA:LJ1 / PHONE:LIH / CSC:LJ1 (AFR)
However I got an error when the download is finished saying that the firmware could not be upgraded due to unknown error, And when I check for software update on the phone it says the latest updates have already been installed . Help please, Thank you in advance !

Only one easy check
Go to settings>about phone>build number
What is the build number? Is it ALJ1 or ALJ3? then congrats. You have been upgraded.
Or you can check by:
Long pressing back button on homescreen. If a blue 'lip' appears on left side of screen, it means you have upgraded its for the multi-tasking.

Hmm my build number is JRO03C.N7100XXALIH, don't think it has been updated cause I still don't get the multitasking feature on my Note 2 =/

I have exactly the same problem. All I have installed into the phone are few apps and two launchers (Apex and SwipePad).

An update is required!

This means your phone needs an update! I heard some has problems updating with kies , the last time I updated my sII was from the phone itself (by clicking "check software update" ). So keep checking from there! Good luck!
Update safe rolling out, it may not be available yet in your country maybe?

Tried that

I didn't try to update with Kies. My phone offered an update this morning (connected to 3G). It popped out some message concerning wireless connections. I turned Wifi on and tried again. Everytime it says you have the latest firmware already. I have tried many many times with no success.

Kies and OTA both have never works as it should, there is nothing better thn flash using PC Odin.

Where is the OTA update??????

Ok
The first time it showed up (when activating), it offered the OTA update and I declined. Then I took it home, rooted the phone, and everything went well...
BUT I can't find the OTA update anymore... and the SD card bug is killing me!!!!
Is there any other way of installing it?????
From the main screen
Menu - Settings - System Updates
Check all 4 to see if any updates are available but im pretty sure "HTC software update" was the OTA
Actually go over to android central and download rvu 1.1 its based on the newest ruu with that update included and its still rooted
Btw this should be in general section not development
I know, but it keeps telling me that there is no update available!!!
And I am running
Baseband: 1.39.00.04.26
Build: 1.32.651.1 CL171253 test-keys
Software: 1.32.651.1
And it keeps telling me YOUR PHONE IS UP TO DATE
Is there any way to force it????

But, that ruu is missing may of the included apps (all the sprint and HTC ones, and I need them). Also, it wipes all the information....,
So, no other way?
Besides I read that that particular ruu kills the 4g radio...
So, I am the only one or most of you are running without the OTA update?
I like to root, in fact the wifi tethering is working great, but the SD issue is really annoying....

i too couldn't get the update to re-show up after not accepting it the first time. i went to system updates and tried both htc and firmware, and the OTA update still wouldn't show. Then i enabled wifi, soft reset, and boom, it showed up. Give it a try, worked for me....

Well, I had it on wifi all the time, and no luck.... now... when you say "soft reset", how exactly? I just turn it off, and then turn it on again... Is there a soft reset option that I am missing somewhere?
If the root changed your recovery you likely won't get OTA's anymore.

Ok, that's what I was suspecting...
So.. what are my options now? Is there a way of getting the updates manually? or is there a way of changing the recovery back or modifying some settings to re-allow updates?
I had the same problem after installing one of the custom firmware images. Never could get the OTA to show up. I ended up installing the stock .6 firmware using the RUU.
Look for the "[ROM]RUU_Supersonic_1.32.651.6" thread in EVO 4 Android Development. (sorry, new user account on the forums, it won't let me post links yet).

4.1.2 Update Issues (Jelly Bean)

So I believe I updated to the latest firmware update the other day for 4.1.2. The issue im having is when I go to the about device option and click software update it shows "continue update" greyed out so im not able to click. When I click "check for updates" I always get the same message " software update interrupted". I have tried to run this update on wifi and 4g both unsuccessful. I have attempted to factory reset my phone ...no go. Can some please suggest anything that will resolve this issue i'm having.

Try manually setting the time on your phone ahead by 24 to 48 hours. This may trigger the phone to complete the update. Are you running complete stock firmware? That includes android OS, kernel, modem, and recovery.

From Settings>>About Device do baseband and build still show as MC3? Is kernel dated something prior to August 2013 (I think MC3 was April 2013)? (can you post a screenie?)
Have you made any customizations to your phone - i.e. build.prop tweaks, debloating, freezing of apps, removal of system apps, anything else that might have modified the /system partition? Any of this would cause the OTA process to abort and stall like you have seen.

Here is a screen shot.
I haven't made in any customizations. I did have the s4 voice.apk installed at some point in time, but I uninstalled it. its possible I could have deleted a system app unintentionally, but I don't recall doing so.
Are you using a stock 3e recovery ??
If not. ...the device will not update. ..as a stock recovery is required. ..g

If you are running the stock recovery, try downloading the CWM package I posted here - http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2449972
Download to your PC and copy to your internal sdcard (the one that shows up as "phone"). Power off phone then boot recovery via home+vol up+power
Then use the side load option to run the CWM zip. If all goes well and your system partition is pure this will update your system, kernel, and modem to MH3. Upon phone boot, your recovery will update to MH3.

Fair point - if you are running a custom recovery, follow the steps above, but run the CWM zip file as you would any other CWM zip from a custom recovery... but from your prior responses, I'm guessing you are running stock recovery and the update process just got confused somewhere... perhaps because one of the stock apps was deleted.
Pay attention when the CWM zip is running.. if it fails you will get an error message showing the file it fails on. I may be able to help you further from there - assuming it's only a file or two that has an issue.

So after months and months of trying to update my phone to I317UCAMH3 I finally got my phone to update to what is now 4.3. Like many of you I tried everything I know how to such as:
-Reverting my phone to 4.1.1 and updating to 4.12 on Kies. same issue
-Resetting the flash counter after performing a data wipe....same issue
-Master reset....same issue
-Going to the Samsung service center and receiving the dumbest answer ever they told me my "cookies" preventing my phone from updating. (biggest idiots ever LOL)
So I was finally able to resolve this issue and receive my updates by switch my wife's sim card from her S3 to my phone and it worked like a charm. So my recommendation is if your having this issue it's more than likely occurring because of a faulty sim card and if you are unable to switch with another phone then go to the ATT store and they will give you a free one. Please let me know if this works for you.

I have an AT&T Note 2 and is unlocked as I moved to Canada. My new carrier is Telus and until recently, around the same time as the KitKat, my great reception went bad. I've confirmed that it is not a hardware issue and appears to be related to updating my phone. For whatever reason I can't update the software on my phone. Kies is of no use and I don't have access to an AT&T sim card to try the new solution. I've tried the hard reset.
I've never rooted the phone and recently reset the phone to resolve the issues. Does anyone have any suggestions?
The version on my phone is I317UCAMA4 and 4.1.2.

Not sure what the same time as KitKat means...
But you can try this. Updates to 4.3 and modem.

Once u get the official, u will get the bootloader as well.
With the new bootloader, u r unable to downgrade in a normal way via odin.
But I did few updates on several N7105 through OTA, and nver got problems with capacitive touch.

Yes you are correct but in my country warranty system is different. My phone has other companies warranty. So when i call them they said sent yiur phone to our service. But i think they are not very experience for this issue and they can say this is customer mistake your phones buttons get a damage. Therefore i m sure this is software problem and i m waiting an answer from here. If nobody can find a solution for my problem as a last solution i should sen my phone to service

Try this app, it will not fix the problem but will enable you to use the phone without problems. You may even do so with minimal loss of display space by making buttons overlay the actual display and making them semi transparent.

You will lose Dual Sim Functionality, Radio (substitutes available), less volume during call (manageable), Menu and back key lights stay ON whenever you touch the screen, cant swipe to call (features of Touchwiz), Multi-Window, Power Saving (we can limit processor usage in almost all CM based Kitkat ROMs, but manually).

f you had not rooted before, this might be caused due to the problem from Samsung server side. Try again after few days. If its essential u need OTA Updates, Try flashing via Odin. Also try using triangle away if your phone is rooted.

Hi,
I just had a similar 'processing failed' problem and realised it might be because I haven't got a SIM card in the phone...
Have you tried inserting a sim card - or trying it with a different sim?

[Q] N910A>Lollipop 5.0.1> Manual Update> "NO FIRMWARE"

I have an AT&T SM-N910A Note 4, currently on Lollipop 5.0.1. It is permanent unlocked via CODE and I'm using it outside the US with a foreign SIM with no problems.
Last April 14 ATT released a firmware update (OTA) to 5.0.1 with new:
Baseband Version: N910AUCU1COC4
Kernel Version: [email protected]#1
Build Number: LRX22C.N910AUCU1COC4
When i try to get that update via ">Settings>General>About Device> Software Updates"... it does NOTHING. Just display a text saying "No Firmware".
To me it seems I'm being ruled out from updates....
Does anyone knows why is this? Do I need to be a current AT&T customer to have updates?
IS THERE ANY PLACE TO FIND THE LATEST 5.0.1 FIRMWARE files to update from ODIN??
Thank you guys for your help!!

Happened to me too on the initial Lollipop update. Basically, the update was downloading, but would fail at install. Eventually, I got the "No Firmware" toast every time I tried to check for updates.
I had to go to Best Buy and they reflashed Kitkat (Because they didn't have the update yet). After that, the update check worked again and the update installed.
And as just stated, there is no 5.0.2 update. Only 2x 5.0.1 updates. First update was the Lollipop OS. The second was just a patch to correct some things.

It wasn't a factory reset. It was a reflash. I didn't lose any of my files, apps, or settings. It was like updating via OTA, except the Best Buy guy did it via USB and the update was the same exact firmware version that I already had.
I'm not even sure if Best Buy is an option for you, but using Odin to reflash the latest Kitkat firmware should do the same thing. I say this because I've done it on my Samsung tablet and I don't lose apps, settings or data. I do lose root though (easy to regain), but that won't matter with the n910a anyways.
Edit:
Using the firmware repair option in Kies may work too, but not 100% sure if it'll retain your data since I've never tried this before.

Just tried it but there is a warning about loosing all data if performing that.
Best Buy is not an option for me.
Unfortunately, flashing the update via Odin is your only option at this time. You will not be able to upgrade firmware via OTA, if not on an ATT network. There are apps that will allow you to backup and restore your call history and text messages without root. You can try copying your android data to your external storage card and copying the files back to the device after the firmware has been flashed.

Hey @thepinkpanter, just saw your post.
First, if you haven't already, remove the battery, boot into recovery mode and do a factory data reset, then reboot.
If you already tried that, then I would try flashing back to KK (NIE or NK3) both files can be found in the General Thread for the ATT N4. Use can use ODIN ver 3.0.7, 3.0.9 or 3.10.6, just follow the instructions for the specific ver you choose.
Let me know if you need further assistance..

Hey @thepinkpanter
You can flash NIE over OC4. I have done so a few times myself. Currently I'm using NK3.
It looks to me like your data partition is not being wiped. If I am remembering correctly, you do not get the android is updating screen on initial boot.

I would suggest selecting Nand Erase All, F. Reset Time, along with Auto Reboot in Odin on your next attempt. This will erase all of your partitions (system, data, etc) prior to flashing the ROM files. Unfortunately, this will erase all of the data on your internal storage card, but I believe this will fix the problem you're experiencing.
Do not select Re-Partition or EFS Clear, this will wipe your phones IMEl.
