[Q] [HELP] I bricked my Glide - Samsung Captivate Glide

First of all, to make it totally clear how noob Im at this... I dont even know if this post goes in this section, so feel free to move it wherever fits best.
Second, excuse my english, its not my first language so ill try my best to explain what I did
Last but not least, thanks to anyone who takes the time to read this post and tries to help me.
So, I finally felt courageous enough to try a non-stock ROM.
The first thing I did was search for a rooting guide for the Glide on the forums. And I found one that seemed pretty straight forward. (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1378082). I downloaded Odin, the CarrierIQ free kernel, started the phone on download mode, started Odin, PDA the kernel file... and when the phne rebooted it got stuck on the samsung sign.
I think my problem is that the guide was old and for GB devices. I was running the stock ICS.
After that, I downloaded from samfirmware the ICS file (is it the kernel or the rom? <-yes, thats how of a noob i am). Tried to use odin with it, but it gets stuck after a couple of mins.
After searching for a while, I found on another forum that it says that I need to downgrade back to GB, and said to install CWM Recovery (I installed it -v5.0.2.7-). And now im downloading the inception ROM (the same post on that forum said to downgrade using that ROM). Since the download is really slow, Im writing here to see if someone knows what happened and how to fix it.
Thanks!

Hi, thanks for your reply.
I downloaded the Stock Kernel but cant seem to install it. Im using CWM and trying to install from SDCard, but it only shows me the internal memory from the phone, not my SD. I already formatted it in FAT32 format. Same results.
Can I do this via Odin? Any idea why my SD isnt showing?

Cwmr on this phone doesnt see the external sd

Not sure about cwmr 5 but in ver 6 (touch) you can mount the internal memory, use your usb cable and transfer the zip to the phone with your pc. UN-mount and disconnect the cable and then you should be able to find the file to flash!

Do you have a link for it? The dropbox one I found isnt working... dont know if the CWM is specific for each device, i found others on google, but since they are on another devices forums, I dont know if it will work with my glide....
Thanks for the help....

The other thing you can do is download the leaked ics that it's a Odin one click file that will flash the kernel and boot loader, should get your phone booted back into stock ics where you can get a fresh start. I'd recommend going to Thegreatergood's LiteRom ver 4 or 5 afterwords. At least until Dman gets cm10 going!

Thanks! No, the link is not working (too much traffic for DropBox), so if you have it, i would really appreciate it.
Also, can you point me into the Odin compatible ROM... I downloaded the LiteRom and Kernel, but both are zips, and cant use them with Odin.

ok here is the CWMR v6 its in a zip file. just unzip to your desktop, the tar.md5 file is useable in the pda mode for odin. just follow the guide listed in the CWMR 6 thread.

here is the link to the ics leak. its a 665mb file that will completely wipe all data in your phone. just be careful!
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1831561
I would also suggest making a backup if the /efs folder on your phone. that folder contains all the imei information that identifies you device to the networks. there is a thread in another forum that uses a tool to easily make a backup and gives the ability to restore! I have never had to use it to restore, but there have been reports on rare occasions where others have lost that information and the imei numbers turned to all "0's" I'm also not sure that you can use the tool until the phone is booted up. here is a link to that thread...

that's great, you might consider making a nand backup using the recovery and also once rooted, use titanium backup!

Well Im finally using the literom and its great. Cwm6 didnt read my sd card, but it allowed me to mount my phone as a drive on my pc, so i made a folder and copied the zips there, and installed from there.
I will try the backup thing later. Im so glad to have the keyboard backlight back!
I was really frustrated yesterday. I have a lot of experience with computers, but not that much with android phones. It was quite an experience.
Thanks again.

Glad you were able to get it going! It's somewhat hard to brick a phone but it is possible, I really hate to see that happen to someone! Over the past years I have found that android is a lot like Linux. Still some differences but a lot alike!

It took me about 3 hours..first time flashing roms in about 2 years.
I bricked but fixed it by reflashing everything in the correct order haha.
I have Kernel 3.1.10-I927UCKH2-CL970642 [email protected]=93 #3 SMP PREEMPT Thu Aug 16:55:50 KST 2012
Build number ImM760
My Baseband version is I927UCLG9
Running Android 4.0.4
Rooted
with AT&T service
and the backlight and tethering fix put on it
using the Nova Launcher for my launcher
Dialer One for calls
GoSMSPro for sms/mms

I am unfortunately stuck in the same position at the moment. I stupidly followed the root guide thinking it'd work for ICS and was horribly wrong.
My phone is now also stuck at the Samsung logo and is driving me crazy. Can you give me some instructions on what you did to restore back to GB? Thanks in advance.

[KERNEL] T-Mobile Samsung Galaxy S II Stock Kernel // UVKID

T-Mobile Samsung Galaxy S II Stock Kernel // UVKID
Finally guys we have root access and with root access that brings goodies, this is one of those goodies.
Explanation
What we have here is a stock boot.img (imagine that Samsung changing things up again on us) pulled from a rooted (via recovery) T-Mobile SGH-T989 (Samsung Galaxy S II).
With this you can recover your phone using ODIN, in the case of a brick or just to return to a factory state.
Initramfs for Developers
I have extracted the boot.img and posted it up for all developers on my github.
Code:
https://github.com/bubby323/stock-initramfs-UVKID-galaxysII-tmo
Downloads
Also to restore you're phone I have a nice little tar file that will take care of the job for you that you can grab from here.
How to Flash
We are going to be using Odin in this explanation to flash the stock kernel to your phone.
Downloads
First you are going to want to start by downloading all the needed files onto your computer and then place them onto your Desktop.
Samsung Kies
Odin3-v1.85.zip
SGH-T989-Stock-UVKID.tar
Process
Once you have everything downloaded and on your desktop, you are going to want to first install kies.
After this is done you should restart your computer for proper driver installation.
Next, extract Odin to a new folder on your Desktop. Leave the tar in the form it is.
Now, open up Odin by double clicking the .exe in the folder you extracted it to.
The most important step is now, you need to put your device into Download/ODIN mode so your computer will recognize it and be able to flash to it. To do this simply turn your phone off completely (or pull the battery). Then you are going to want to use the following button combination to force your device into download mode:
Hold the volume up/down and power button all at the same time.
Click to collapse
Now ODIN should have recognized your device ( it may take a while for the drivers to complete installation so don't panic the first time).
Lastly, we want to click on the PDA button and then search for the SGH-T989-Stock-UVKID.tar we download earlier and placed on the Desktop.
If all of the above has taken place you are free to hit the Start button.
Done!
If all has gone well at this point the flash should be proven successful and your phone should reboot like normal.
If so, please feel pressured to give yourself a pat on the back, that was tough!
Is this method better then slayher?? Method?

This is not a method for obtaining root. It's reference material, and also a way to return yourself to stock if you flash a hosed kernel.
If you already have a stock kernel, I am 90% certain that this will do absolutely nothing.
But having a "return to stock kernel" path AND a fresh initramfs are major milestones for development.
You're not at risk, you should be perfectly fine using slayher's method, but if you screw up, this will be a component of your path back to a working phone. But it's only useful if you screw up, you're a kernel developer who wants a clean initramfs for reference, or need to return your phone back to 100% stock. However, if you're in one of those three categories, this is a critical milestone.
This will put stock recovery back on also right?
[Q] Files from a ROM around?
I've asked this before and I should probably shut it, but if anyone has files from a ROM that works with ODIN or a ZIP file (CWM compat or not), root or unrooted (doesn't matter), or a NANDROID backup, could you let me know?
I got stock kernel up, CWM recov, but broke my actual OS- since it broke, I done flashed /data /emmc /system to empty out my stomach. I really just need everything from / (minus your personal data, of course) - can get it to work with a recovery by myself (and can post that up if I do).
Thanks in advance, bruvs.

[ROM][CM9][AOKP] Temporary Stock E4GT from emmc

Epic Touch Blog: Temporary Stock E4GT from emmc
Utility for CM9 Epic Touch
This is a temporary ROM that boots Samsung's Gingerbread EL29 firmware entirely from emmc without making any changes to the ROM currently installed on your phone. When you reboot, you return to recovery where you can re-flash the ROM to return to CM9. This temporary ROM is useful for several purposes.
Update Profile.
Update PRL.
Sprint Activation.
Dial codes and diagnostic mode.
This should be helpful to users of any AOSP-based ROM including CM9, AOKP, etc.
Thanks to noobnl and mkasick for making this possible!
Really nice thanks a lot.

Would this work to flash .zip updates (such as kobridge) or updated ROMs (such as alpha5)?
This definitely will come in handy, can I suggest seeing if you can get a video made of how it works. I can honestly say It seems to help out quite a bit in this forum for a lot of people and does cut down on the crazy questions.
Great job though!

You can use the directbootCWM file to update CM9 yes. Not sure about using it for Kobridge tweaks.

Its for AOSP roms. You currently can't update PRL/Profile, activate your device, or use dialer codes on them so this temporarily allows you to boot stock el29 off the SD card without changing your current rom. You can do what i said from there. Saves you time from doing backups, restoring, etc.

I'm hoping that someone can help me out as I am unable to boot into the temporary ROM. Here are the steps I followed:
1. I have everything extracted to emmc as directed.
2. I flashed directboot CWM utilizing mobile odin which correctly booted me into CWM version 5.0.2.7
3. I flashed boot_EL29.zip at location /emmc/multiboot/EL29 and received the following messages that appear to be correct.
Finding Update Package...Opening Update Package...Installing Update...Boot /emmc/multiboot/EL29/zImageCreate mount symlink.Remount partitions read-only.(Re)mount /emmc read-only.Unpack kexec.Load zImage and initramfs.Sync.Reboot into zImage.Install from sdcard complete.4. At this point I expected the phone to reboot into the temporary rom; however, it just shows the standard recovery menu. No reboot occured.
5. Because no automatic reboot occured, I selected "reboot system now" from CWM. Unfortunately this just brings me back into directboot CWM.
Thanks in advance for any help provided.
I am having the same problem I thought it could have been the downloading or unpacking so I downloaded it again and unpacked it and still have the same problem.

When done updating prl/profile, etc. Just reboot your phone and it will take you back to cwm recovery. From there you can either just reflash the rom or just a compatible kernel so it boots.

Don't quote me but if I'm not mistaken you can always push through odin in download mode. If the recovery gets screwed.

It should, however the way I look at it is that if it isnt broke why fix it. So many people have lost their imei or data flashing roms, recovery and so on that I am just going to stick with what I installed originally. it doesnt bother me to click the volume rocker up and down and press power to select. I also flashed color in high def with no problems what so ever. Remember to flash SU in recovery after you use Odin for the Recovery. I also went into the market and installed busybox after I flashed SU.

Just went ahead and flashed CWM Touch from the thread below. I can confirm it recognizes the external sd card. I still have my IMEI and 4G data speeds. I downloaded the TAR file, extracted it and changed name. I put it on the internal sd card and flashed via termianl emulator.
Hope this helps with your decision.
Oh yea, back up your IMEI

Strange. I'm using touch cwm and it can't use my ext SD as an option to install from, I can mount and unmount in advanced menu but not use as an option to install from.

Can't Mount SD Card E: Error

So I am following the steps from QBKing in this youtube video and I get all the way to where I need to install FC09 from the SD Card but I am getting this error: E:\ Can't mount sd card?
I have never flashed this phone before and am trying to get ICS on it. I hope I am going the correct route but right now it reboots fine just can't install FC09 for Superuser access. Any help on this would be greatly appreciate! Thanks.
BTW, I checked several other threads before posting but I didn't find anything particular to Epic and there were several different troubleshooting steps so don't hate because I started a new thread.
Thanks in advance.
I'd like to second the request, as this happened to my phone Thursday evening. I've also looked around forums for the last two days and I can't find anything specifically for the Epic 4G that address this issue.
In my case I was running a Deodexed rooted version of Gingerbread. I got the bug to try something a bit more, so I installed the newest stable release of of Cyanogenmod 10, and it loaded up fine. I had made a nandroid backup of my texts, contacts, calendar, etc., but when I tried to put that info back in I got to the point where my screen showed "E:Can't mount" anything.
Ideas? Thoughts? Prayers?
Blessings & Peace,
Hugo
In CWM recovery, go to mounts and storage. Then manually mount sdcard. This may help. Also try cycling the card in its socket.

What version of CWM are you trying to install? Try to odin this https://www.dropbox.com/s/yyhp404ixp26o2g/cwm-5.0.2.7-epic4g.tar.md5 then go into recovery and mount your device copy the rom you want or flash the rom that is on your sd card.

I think CM10 uses a different version of CWM and might not be backwards compatable. I could be wrong on this. If I am someone will correct me. If I am not go back to stock reroot do your nandroid restore then back up your text using SMS BACKUP and RESTORE or MY BACKUP PRO
Thanks for the info all!
My phone won't turn on at all anymore. I used instructions I found elsewhere (take out battery, hit power button twice, pop in battery, go to download mode) which worked, then I used the dropbox file and was able to get Odin to flash it, but now I'm still having the issue that my phone won't turn on at all (either with power or power+camera+lower sound button). Any other ideas? At this point I think paying an extra $50 to Sprint to get a new S3 is looking good

If you can still get to download mode, all is not lost. Odin back to stock and try again. Check out the sticky in the development section regarding Odin. And make sure you have a robust cable like a BlackBerry one. They work best. If you can get to download mode, you can almost always come back. Good luck.

If I may ask . . . what specifically should I try? I have Odin 1.87 along with the file listed a few posts above. I can get into download mode, I can flash this, and then . . . nothing. I've tried an HTC cable, but no blackberry cable, and tried it from both computers in my home on different ports. However, I still can't turn the phone on or boot into CWM. Any and all help to specific solutions would be greatly appreciated (please note that while I sound literate and am pretty tech savvy, messing around with my Android OS is something I'm doing pretty much by the seat of my pants!)

Get the victory pit file from the Odin sticky thread and a stock tar file. At this point you probably need to start over. So, using the detailed writeup on how to Odin back to stock, find your way back to bone unrooted stock. Then, depending on what version of stock tar file you chose (el30 or fc09), you then must re-root the device. At this point I would suggest searching YouTube for qbking77 videos on how to root that version. That should get you rooted with a recovery . Then download and flash your ROM of choice. This is a nutshell version, please look for the Odin /unbricking thread. It is far more detailed and directs you to the appropriate files needed.
Edit: This is the thread I speak of. Its a wealth of Odin info.

Oh, also, the cm10 and 9 along other ROMs use MTD/yaffs2 file system. The previous cwm recovery you were flashing is only compatible with BML/RFS or EXT4 which is proprietary/stock. Once you Odin back stock, root, and get the recovery installed, you then can flash CM10 which will convert your system to MTD and install the appropriate CWM recovery for CM for you in the flash. That's why it reboots during the initial flash. Once you're MTD, you have to use mtd versions of ROMs. Spend a bit of time in the development section sticky threads. There are some great explanations for all of this in there.

Actually, now I have a different question - I bit the bullet and ordered two new S3's from Sprint (got a nice $1 on each one with no activation fee). I would rather not lose all of the info stored on my SD card (pics for the most part, but maybe salvaging phone numbers would work, too). Could I put my SD card into my wife's phone (same), boot it up, and copy over all of the files without it affecting her phone?
If I can do that, I'd rather try that first and then happily try the steps from the previous posts.
Blessings & Peace,
Hugo

Sure, but your SD card should be untouched from the Odin process. Assuming you have contacts synced to Google and your pics on the SD card, you should be fine.

It worked! Downloaded everything, ran it exactly as it said, and I'm sitting here with a fully functioning phone that is yelling at me that I have tons of missed calls, texts and voice mails. Thank you so very much!

Well done! As difficult as that was, it's one great learning process.

[Q] Bricked Samsung galaxy s2 epic 4g touch

HELP!!! My brother heard me talking about rooting my phone and installing cool ROM’s so he gave it a shot.. He has a Samsung galaxy s2 epic 4g touch, he loaded some ICS rom that does not have WiFi working, it also does not have USB working? He also didn’t load any recovery making it hard to bring it back to stock.
So I have a Samsung galaxy s2 epic 4g touch with some weird ICS rom, the Wifi does not work, no SDCard access, it has NO USB support.. it does have Bluetooth working so I have been able to move files to it but the rom he installed is not rooted and I can’t install a recovery app…
I can boot into download mode but with no USB support oden will not see the phone 
Any advice on how to root the phone or get a recovery app installed from the phone?
I can boot into the default recovery and I have the option to “Apply Update.zip from external storage” but the phone will not see an SD card, I also have an option to “apply update.zip from cache” then I see a lost+fount and recovery directory but I don’t know how to get my update.zip to this folder?
You can try downloading one of agat's ics kernels and flashing it through mobile Odin. You don't need USB for that. If that works then download a rom from xda not some random one you found on the internet, put it in the internal storage and flash from agat's recovery. May not work can't say 100%

Its not listed on my list of apps for super user so I don't believe so but I am not sure worst that can happen is the app not open

it does require root access
i can boot into download mode, the OS installed has no USB support so oden does not see the phone.

Yeah, that's what confuses me. USB support in Odin Download mode of the phone, which I thought was driven by Kernel, not rom, leaves me to wonder if he flashed the international kernel.
Or I thought..
But it's odd you get the rom to boot and all of that is broke..

I wonder if you can get to the playstore and download supersu, if that wouldn't be a root method? Total shot in the dark since I haven't followed Chainfires SU thread that close. :edit: Doesn't look like it would work. :/
I for sure can not get access to the play store i can download APK files and move them to this phone via bluetooth but with out root access supersu will not work..
Hmm. So the only options in recovery is externel SD and cache? You may be sol. You can try downloading agats kernel in
Zip format and putting in the internal storage and pray it works. Unless one of the e4gt gurus knows another way

Unless you can push recoveries through the bootloader as an img like HTC phones but with recoveries tied to the kernel I doubt it unless its possible to unpack the kernel and just pull the recovery. But that's far beyond me.
Sent from my SPH-D710 using xda app-developers app
what is "agats kernel" and i dont think there is away to flash it with the stick recovery?
Agat is a developer here for the e4gt. You can find his kernels in the kernel repository thread in the Android development sub forum
