I noticed as soon as I turned my Nexus on today that there was a line across the screen that looked like dirt under the display.
It is only noticeable on low brightness but the auto brightness set the phone to minimum when I turned it on so I saw it. I can only also see it on bright backgrounds like the forum - it is not visible on dark backgrounds or the home screens.
Does anyone else have this issue? I will return it soon and get it replaced but I am wondering if this is widespread or I was just unlucky.
Try turning the brightness right down and looking at this page and see if you see any lines/marks under the glass.
I have a line as well but it's quite small so I'm not really bothered.

Few very feint lines here too. Setting phone to fixed second lowest brightness setting and they vanish though.
This issue is on the gs2's too.

I can also see two faint grey vertical lines on either side of the screen if I have a light (white) background and brightness settings 1-3!
I haven't come across any other issues, I only noticed it after reading this thread and now its in bugging me. But I love the handset.. better than I expected!
Are these lines normal or do I have a duff handset? I have a couple of weeks to change it if necessary but I am also aware of the stock availability due to high demand.
Anyone else in same situation (O2 UK handset)?
I have the same issue on the lowest brightness, but not on the highest. It is also very faintly noticeable on my SGS2 on the lowest brightness. On my Omnia 7 (samoled) it is also very visible on low brightness, I think it is an amoled thing.

Exactly even the iphones with it's tinting issues SGS2 with it's Blotches in the dark
and the glass isn't perfect around the bezel
people just look for this stuff
I don't understood if this lines means defective screen or if all phones will have this lines.
I have the same thing on my Galaxy Nexus. I guess it's just a thing with Super Amoled screens, rather than a defect.

+1 Just as I said in my post above I have 4 amoled screen devices and they all it to some effect. Do not worry, your phone is fine.
could someone please post a picture so i can see what you guys are talking about? i'm curious to see what it looks like since i don't notice this on the samoled screen on my nexus s.
I had that issue with 2 evo screens. I would also get dead pixels or blotches.. Just have to get lucky with one I guess.

why is fine if it seems to have a problem?

I have the same thing on minimum brightness. Its best seen by using a white image as wallpaper and having nothing on your far left and far right home screens. I have many vertical lines. When I scroll the home screen all the way over to the left until I see the blue gradient appear, the gradient varies in shades exactly where the lines are.
I noticed it as soon as i first powered on the device, same as the OP, as it was set to minimum brightness but I dont generally notice it any other time. I dont recall having the same problem with my galaxy S2
Hello everyone, today I've noticed that on landscape mode my GN has a lighter and brighter vertical line of pixels on the left side, if I turn the phone on the left; if I turn the phone on the right it doesn't happen and everything is fine on both sides. It is really annoying me and I can't say if it is the first time it happens or this kind of issue has been always there. It can be noticed only with white or light backgrounds and in EVERY photo, if brightness is switched to max it is hard to see but with automatic or half brightness is pretty clear.
I tried to screenshot it but I'm afraid this is something hardware since it doesn't show on screenshot.
Anyone else with the same problem?

I think its related to the screen burn issue. I have somthibg similair too, but it noticeable only on white background. I see green color there..

I think I have the same issue. Don't know if I should go and get a replacement. It also only shows on white background while browsing.

Took it to assistance. It'll be back in 10 working days and since I don't have something not even similar to replace it I'm stuck with an old Sony Ericsson W205...what a nightmare!

At least you can replace it. I am from Israel and I bought the Gnex in the US directly from Google. I noticed this problem a day before I went on the flight so I didnt have much time to replace it. But it doesnt much bother me. I know that those Super AMOLED screen have too much problems... Just live with it right now.

I have the exact same issue on my Galaxy Nexus. The same row of pixels (along the top-edge). It's not visible in portrait mode because the notification bar is black and the pixels are switched off.
Here's the kicker: since this afternoon, the row of pixels are switched on even when the background is black. They appear as a faint line and become brighter when there's a background image. I put the phone under a magnifying glass and there appear to be three such rows, not one. It could be the pentile matrix playing with my eyes since the pixels are too small to see even with a (low power) magnifying glass, but there's definitely more than one row.
Anyone else?

Can you post or link a picture? I mean under a magnifying glass, just to see how it looks like...ehm not sure if it is possible though
I am having the same problem on mine too. There are these streaks that runs across in landscape or portrait. it's more noticable in a grayish white background. It's very easy to see with a screen test app that shows one color on the whole screen. Lately, I also notice the very top and bottom line of pixels like would lit up brighter. For example, when i touch the context buttons at the bottom, bottom pixels of the buttom would lit up bright white.
Edit: clariification, it's the same lines of streaks if held in portrait, it would go across. when in landscape, the same streaks goes to to bottom.
I also have a lighter vertical line of pixels on the side of the screen when in landscape. The interesting thing, though, is that it is on the left, regardless of whether my phone is in landscape with the power button on the top or the button. either way it's on the left of the picture. So I don't think it's a hardware issue. More likely a calibration issue?
I also have horizontal banding of slightly different shades in portrait on grey/white backgrounds (eg: facebook app). These become harder to see the more brightness I turn up.

Other than that small line, the phone is perfect so i guess i won't bother..

I got the entire screen replaced by Samsung Italy. 100% hardware issue
i have the same issue... but i think it is not "burn in", it is just a pixel line brighter than the rest, in my case it shows all the colors as it should, just brighter.

A couple of weeks ago I noticed the topmost line of pixels of my Gnex is miscoloured or brighter than normal, and yet sometimes displays correctly, usually when black.

I noticed it's on the bottom too. Maybe some backlight problem or something... But sometimes it changes colour due to shades changing, it's like in half shades it's shining more and in other half it's darker. Like some software compensating. There's other colours, but blue looks differently.

When i have a wallpaper whit black on top of the screen, then i have a small black line on top were normally the status bar ends, so thats a half centimeter from the top screen.
Its really difficult to see and its only when i have a really black background,
When there are other collors then the black line is gone so its only with really black.
Maybe that its normall

I can only see it when its darker in my room, so on a clear day i dont see it.
I have the screen setting on standard and the brightness on 25%
So its about 1cm below the samsung sign from left to right
Further than that the screen is really perfect

When i have a black wallpaper with the grey status bar then there is no black line, so its only when i have a black wallpaper or picture and i watch it in gallery without the status bar so you see the full screen picture

I don't have one yet but it doesn't sound like a faulty screen. A faulty display may have pixels or a row that is all black regardless of what's on the screen or always white etc.
You can try downloading a screen checking app, it will display all black, white, red, green and blue to try and identify faulty pixels.

I have checked it with the app screen test.
I only see the small black line when the screen is full black in the test and i must be in a darker room, the rest of the test is perfect from dark grey to every collor
Maybe someone else can test it to with the app screen test, i would appreciate it

If that is the case something may be wrong. While it isn't a typical problem it should not be occurring. Consider getting a replacement.

If you see a black line that goes across the whole screen and it is only visible on a black screen that is defective in my opinion. It should be consistent.
No its not from top screen to home button.
The small black line is on top were the status bar ends so its a horizontal line when you hold the phone like when your calling.
Yes its only when there is full really black picture or movie
My note 1 from last year had alot of black spots over the whole screen and that was only when there was black screen

I don't really have any experience with AMOLED screens but it still does not seem normal to me(I could be wrong). It really comes down to if it bothers you and how noticeable it is. It probably isn't too bad since its only for black.
Why don't you take a screenshot from your phone (Press the S-pen button, then tap on the screen) and then transfer the image to your computer.
Compare both images and if the black line doesn't appear on your computer, it means that your screen is faulty.

Is there nobody with a note 2 that can test it maybe whit the screen test app, and then go to the full black screen and look good for a black line, but with normall light its not noticable you must be in a darker room

I had exactly the same issue with S2, sent back for replacement. It was very noticable with black backgrounds and also whilst using camera in dark situations, other than that is was very difficult to see.

Yes i have seen pictures of a s2 that was really terrible, alot of black spots and line over the whole screen.
Did your new s2 have it to?
My note 1 had black spots, almost every note 1 had them so far as i know.
Now there are no black spots just 1 small black line so its not mutch, and its only noticable if i am in a darker room with full black screen.
I have read that its a amoled thing, and almost all amoled screens have it, some worse then other

It is an AMOLED thing.
All will have it to some extent, some more than others.
I can see a small 1cm line on my s3 screen in darkness with a dark wallpaper etc, but it doesn't bother me as I only see it in extreme circumstances!

Got a black line in the center of the screen all of a sudden. I will return it tomorrow and grab a new one, mine's only 3 days old and didn't pay to look at a crappy line wich is allways visible except when its turned off

now what i noticed in my screen,
there middle 10% part is shaded with 1% opacity,
if we look closely then it's not noticable as u seen from far,
from naked eyes is too difficult to see,
its not like Colours are gone, only looks like shade,
if i increase brightness to 100% then the small shade like finish.
i m confused that it is defected or not,

I have that yellow tint that the link is describing due to the glue during the manufacturing process. I'm able to see it when looking directly to the screen. When the screen is slightly angled away, that yellow tint is gone. I hope it will be resolved on future updates.

Can't say what's your problem without any pictures but yes, AMOLED displays differ from device to device, and it's still immature, unlike LCD displays.
And yes, mine has Yellowish tint too.

This can only be resolved with a color temperature change, up to now im still wondering why the color temperature on the Galaxy Note 2 devices vary so much from phone to phone and no its not the glue. From where I live this is valid with in the 7 days of replacement provided that the next unit they open up is not yellow. But if im in a pitch black room or no 'warm' light sources there are no traces of this warm color temp.
Mine has no yellow tint, mine looks like middle area of screen is grey shaded, I checked, protector is ok, but screen middle area is very slightly shaded. Very difficult to see, when we scroll fb or youtube(down to up) then its noticable... most in plane white background...
I hope someone understand my fail English. .

Thats obviously a defect, have it replaced.

Like I already said in another thread to your query, this is normal. If you can't distinguish this from the naked eye (during normal use), this is definitely normal. I'm sure you are keeping the display in low brightness; this brightness uniformity issue exists on virtually all AMOLED displays, and the Mura Effect does have some attribute to this as well. Rumors say that the Samsung's Flagship Devices this year (2013) might feature an SLCD3 instead of AMOLED. Might indicate that AMOLED displays still need further refinement. If the shade is not so prominent, you should not worry about it then. Every Note 2 has this, those that say they don't see the shade are not looking close enough. I call this AMOLED phenomena a Samsung-kind-of-thing for a reason.

Just bought a new Zplay 1 week ago. I noticed on dark (not total black) colors that my top right screen corner is a bit brighter that the other parts of the screen. This brightness expands from right too to the middle. My question: is it fixable? Should i ask for a replacement device from Motorola's service (will they accept it?) or stick with this device and live with that? From previous experience from other services, usually i got the older phone back in worst condition than it was before. Anyone else with same problem?
I'm open to suggestions. Thanks.

Amoled displays cannot have backlight bleeding since they have no backlight. Try downloading a pure black image, turn your brightness to maximum (no auto brightness) and see what you get. If you can still see something, then you might have a defective oled display. Motorola customer service might try to turn you down with the usual "Back light bleed is totally normal (it is normal on IPS LCDs to an extent)", since they more than likely dont know the difference between an IPS LCD and an AMOLED.
Or you could try turning up your brightness to maximum and just activate moto display and see if you can see anything.

On pure blacks i see nothing. The display is perfect. On the other hand i get to see a difference on other colors, mostly darker greys, for example on Chrome's empty tab panel where the color is a bit gray, there the problem can be seen. I'm don't know if this is natural or not. I will upload some pics to get an idea
Probably burn in on the screen from your status bar.. Also check the nav bar area too

Could be screen temp issue. Maybe wasnt calibrated correctly.
Id suggest get a screen test app , bring up a white color and see if that side has a yellow tint. If so its a color temp issue or also could be color distortion. Get a new one.

Today i sent it back to the store for a service check. They said if there is any issue with the screen i will get a new one or a refund. The thing is, i don't realy trust the technicians. Most of them are crappy

My moto z plays dispay is slightly on the warmer side (whites are not pure white, a bit of yellowish). Initially i haven't noticed this but when compared this with redmi note 3 then i can see the difference where redmi note 3 colours are more vibrant.Is it normal? Or some issue with the screen?
I just checked m display and it's full black like the deep space, which was obvious since is an AMOLED display and all black pixels turn off to not show anything when they are black.
Ur Moto-Z seems like it was a LCD version lol! Good u get ur money back.

Technically the pics are not pure black backgrounds so in thay case the pixels are not off..

This is my go to app for testing screens, white and grey. Grey is usually the easiest to tell issues on with an amoled. This showed the terrible G-flex 2 panels weakness (greys were horrible on that screen)

Check ur display with total black background...not grey
Amoled usually checked with black background..& see it in dark invirment if any light visable ..if any light visable than ur display is faulty...
AMOLED displays always has to be TOTAL black, since there is not lamp providing light like in LCD and LED panels.
Obviously, there is a problem with the screen. If it does not affect the use, it does not matter, but if you can not accept such a screen, you can replace a new moto z play screen by yourself.
