Will it ever even be possible to have a working 4.0+ for the EVO 4G? - EVO 4G Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Dozens of people all working on ICS and JB roms but not a single one of them are fully working.
Without HTC's help in releasing the drivers for the FFC and camcorder will there ever even be a working rom or are all of them just going to miss out on features of the phone forever? 4G not working is fine since 4G EVO version is not going anywhere, but missing out on the camcorder and FFC are big deals..

Seems like this topic comes up at least once a week now, in some way or another.
To answer your question though, no. Without the source for the drivers, developers would have to come up with it from scratch, which is very meticulous and time-consuming as I understand it. Sure, the possibility exists, but I believe the chance of it happening is slim to none. Not that I think the developers couldn't do it, but we're talking about a device that's 2+ years old now. There are newer and greater devices out there that are still being supported, not only by great developers but also the manufacturer, which is key to this entire issue. When the OG lost the support of HTC and went EOL with Sprint, it was pretty much game over as far as source code ever went. If you want a fully-functional ROM, stick with GB-that's where the OG shines

As you can see the development for the OG is just about dead, theres no real reason for anyone to attempt to make a driver for it,the phone is close to being obsolete,so it would be useless.

What I really wonder is why HTC wouldn't release the drivers for a phone that's already EOL...but I guess they want to force us to upgrade...and it's working.

I completely agree, as long as they feel that they could loose profit by having potential customers sticking with their old phone, they wont release a thing. But when ICS is old news, then don't be to shocked if they just happen to go ahead, and out if pitty, throw it our way.

But it would sure be nice if they had the heart to let us have it now.

That's why my next phone is going to be a nexus .

They can't release something they don't have. Do you really think they would write drivers for a device they no longer support? That's a waste of time and resources better spent working on currently supported devices.

I'd like to make the drivers...theyre linux drivers in their base...I wonder what porting them from GB would really take. It be a great show of solidarity among OG Evo 4g users and a big middle finger to Sprint and HTC. Also, really kick ass. At any rate, maybe instead of *****in we should be learnin.

It's true, but I believe it's because there are a lot more newer devices that are being supported. This is an old phone and i'm surprised it's still being developed. For me, I'm using this JB Rom and loving it so far: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1947452.

I do believe there will never be a fully functioning JB ROM cause the camera drivers don't match up. Not to mention the EVO hit its max software with GB. Anything past that starts to lag. Having that issue now with JB on my Nexus S.

There is a gingerbread rom with 4g. Or wimax... try looking on the front page......also the reason why 4g and HDMI are difficult is because they are tied into sense.

Because of Hugh's obvious error with 4G/HDMI in Gingerbread, he has been fired. Development will now be handled by HTC. They promise a Gingerbread ROM with 4G and HDMI in… 8 months. 10/5/2011: mark your calendars.

That is the funniest **** I have read in a long time...sigged
Lmao I couldn't stop laughing for a while, I knew he would get flame, anyways back to the topic Idk how much knowledge you have about development roms in general and what stage the Evo is in the moment, to start the Evo is in froyo version 2.2 (there is a version 2.2.1 and 2.2.2) and it was released by sprint/HTC which they make the codes for the front facing camera (back then it was the first Android device with it that I know) , 4G and HDMI so they practically used they own source not android (but it did involved android) now cm7(gingerbread 2.3.2) is based on AOSP (android open source project) and the developer/s cynogen get all their source from Google android open source which back then(eclair 2.1/froyo 2.2) they didn't have a way to make the ffc camera and wimax (now they have ffc camera but not wimax or HDMI) , what really good developers are doing is writing a code for wimax almost 8 months later (is really hard to make it from scratch is not just a copy and paste job, they been working on it for months ) to work on an aosp rom which is great, the ones on sense (wimax/4G) don't work cause is tied to sense framework, so until HTC realease a official update the Evo will be considerer gingerbread (2.3.1/2.3.2) and HDMI and4G will work if they ever update it BTW this thing ain't easy to do and that's one thing the android fragmentation with all carriers and phone makers have a problem with and that's where cynogen mod come to the rescue ha ha, cm/sense user BTW

you fail
back to business: there is none, because gingerbread roms are roms from either the sdk or nexus s that have been ported. the devs had to re-write all the kernel codes and radio codes and everything. that is FREAKING HARD TO DO!
recently, toastchf and shinzul actually wrote a wimax code to work on gingerbread. THEY FREAKING REVERSE ENGINEERED WHAT PROBABLY TOOK HTC/SPRINT MONTHS. DO YOU KNOW HOW HARD THAT IS?
where is your development? i see none. i just see you asking for something that took months of hard work that is actually like 3 threads below yours.

+1 on that... I honestly see more people asking real (hate to say it) stupid questions in here more than anything else. Nobody takes the time out to look for sh&t and then get mad when they are told to do some research. Thats why we have pages and pages of people destroying their phones. Keep up the good work guys of smacking people like this around it keeps me coming back and laughing....
P.S.A - People do some lurking before you ask dumb questions and do some searching as well. Don't root flash or do anything related to that until you do your damn homework.... Deuces!

[Q] is the leaked 2.3.3 or just a cover up of 2.2

went to a sprint store and the sprint representive said the EE03 for the epic 4g was a fake and was not the real gingerbread but a covered up version of 2.2 froyo is this really true????
Lol are you serious? The guys messing with you
xDDDDD. Wait you were serious? Sorry.
He's messing with you man. EE03 is a leaked version of 2.3.3, it most certainly NOT 2.2!
No. Otherwise Netflix wouldn't work on it. It is NOT an official release but a beta version. There will be later versions before it is released.
i can't speak for others, but IMHO the devs in this community know more than 99% of "Sprint store" employees about what is going on with the epic and with gingerbread.
Have you tried running the leaked EE03 rom? it has some functionality to it that is definitely an improvement over stock EC05 froyo, but also definitely a little way to go before a fully functional gingerbread release.
on a different note -- anyone hear about the progress of EE19?

I Totally have to agree the epic 4g is clearly a better phone if you screw up with it or something i have always been able to reset it and sprint techs not even having a clue i did that.
So, I work for sprint and I can tell you that xda has more info than we do. They don't really tell us much at all, xda would have info up for weeks before they officially tell us anything. Kind of funny

If it supports your phone, it will be an over the air update when its released sometime next month.

You can buy at a stand
But Desire won't get any updates, only custom ROM (hopefully).
You probably own an HTC Desire since you posted this question here... then you'll have to wait just like the rest of us for our awesome developers to port the ROM over.
We are not gonna get any over the air update since HTC ended their support for our device already.

Because it wasn't released as a normal, OTA update. Instead, HTC released a very late, buggy version via their website, and so your average desire owner probably doesn't even know a GB update exists.
That's because with OTA they couldn't delete content from system. And it ain't more buggy than FroYo, in fact it's less buggy than FroYo.

Sure, it's less buggy than froyo, but you would expect that, really. Some of the bugs that I really thought would be addressed were still present.
And you can't deny that when a manufacturer releases an update that has warnings and disclaimers on it, it hasn't been done quite as smoothly as Samsung/Apple.
Because of memory constraints (duh!).
No chance of ics on HTC desire unless ported thru custom Rom
If HTC will remove gapps, then it will be easily possible, even if with old Sense.
Rooted and get an custom ROM will give you ice cream earlier. Forget HTC.
Doubt very much if we will see ICS on Desire...
ICS is optimised for dual-core and also features virtual keys. There is already speculation on the Sensation boards whether they will see the update, due that device using soft keys.
I imagine HTC will tweak ICS to run on Sensation, but can't see them adapting to Desire. Too many deficiencies to be addressed.
Hoping our awesome devs will be able to at least port various bits and pieces from Android 4.0 for us to enjoy, though!!

Well we will probably, just that we won't see it from HTC as they dropped support for Desire.
Because ICS will essentially work with any phones that can run Gingerbread (not just dual-core). And apparently ICS checks if your device have hardware keys or not, if there is, they will not display the virtual keys. And i can't really see Google being so stupid to only restrict ICS to phones without hardware keys as there are essentially no other phones besides the galaxy nexus that do not have hardware keys.
Also, we already have a port of ICS SDK, here. Its not usable or perfect, but at least it proves that the Desire can run ICS.

4g on AOSP rant...

what do people find so hard to understand that in order for 4g to work on aosp (ie. MIUI, Cyanogen), we need the proprietary wimax drivers from samsung???
the only other option is to have somebody code the drivers from scratch.
this has been asked and answered dozens of times in these threads, why are people so thick that they can't accept the answer???

I feel your pain. But, unless one of these recurring questions goes woefully unanswered I'll just shut up. I used to try diligently to educate everyone as they filed in the new-recruits barracks. I've done that a lot over the years as nerdy hobbies of mine have actually taken root in mainstream society...and I've also noticed the same pattern.
Not that there is anything wrong with that. It's the natural progression of the situation. The thing is we are just at the beginning of the smart-phone era. No, I don't mean the prehistoric smart-phone era, pre iphone. This is the beginning of the 'modern' smartphone era. Post-iPhone/Android. The vast majority of people who own cellphones still do not have a smartphone....so...this 'issue' is only going to get worse and worse and worse. Even though we are but a tiny sliver of the smartphone owning population our ranks will continue to swell for years. What was the last number I read, over 800,000+ Android activations *per day*!??? That is a rate that is only increasing. This time last year I think it was hovering around 150k a day and I was blown away....
...interesting times.

The thing that I dont get, and Im just putting this out there......if you tweak your wimax radio setting on the OG Epic, the Nexus S, or the Epic 4g Touch (##DATA#), they all have the same settings, they are all Samsung phones, and they are all "Galaxy S" devices in one form or another.....so dont they use the same WIMAX radios? If so, the drivers are right there in the Nexus.

Based on the tear down one of the sites did the E4GT has a different wimax chip made by Toshiba while the NS4G has a Samsung chip. I also saw someone claim that they are actually the same, one was just a rebranding of the other or something like that.
Basically it boils down to someone needing to actually go debug the 4G and see if the already existing CM7 code can work with minor tweaking or if reverse engineering of the drivers is required.
They need to have a auto ban script enabled for when aosp and Wimax/4g are mentioned within 500 characters of each other.

Yes, either hound the ever living **** out of Samsung on Twitter and Facebook to release the code or do it yourself.

I think it would be easier to put in the 4G not working like they used to do in EVO and they do in NS4G forums, or they can also say 4G will never work. Saying this because they always include what is not working while publishing all AOSP roms.

Wouldn't you get banned for this post too then?

Good point. I support this idea.
Not sure what specific wimax radio the touch uses, but usually it is the radio manufacturers being closed, not the phone manufacturer. Wimax is mostly proprietary technology. In order to get access to the detailed radio datasheet, which is needed to write the drivers, you usually need to be high volume and sign an nda not to share it. I can almost guarantee Samsung can't release the wimax code because of these nda's.
Curious how they got it working on the evo.
Edit: so the touch uses the Toshiba TC31501AAMBG for wimax. Link of you find a detailed datasheet for it.

Has the devs given up on the Eptouch?

The rom selection is not very good and the roms themselves are full of issues save for the gb ones.
Wtf are u talking about? We have a few JB roms out. we have as much dev support as any phone on XDA!!!!
Have u tried blu kuban its amazing. The cm9 is almost a daily what the f#@k else do u want for the devs to suck u off too!!!!!!!

Not sure if we see the same things.. Lately the devs have been cranking away with the epic 4G touch..

U are confusing. Not sure what planet u are on or what universe. Samsung/sprint put out a ****ty update and u want the devs to fix it? U know most devs don't do this for a living right ? Also we have a huge assortment of roms. We have atleast 7 roms active being updated daily . Plus cm9 and now JB which one is cm10 and posted and one is not cuz of people like u whining that a alpha ROM has bugs

I am running agats tFE22_v0.1.0
Just an issue of losing wifi when the phone goes to deep sleep, but other than that it's great.
No real development recently though, except people theming roms and calling themselves developers
We should have a few stable builds of jelly bean soon? If you want loads of choices in roms maybe switch to a GSM phone

Why is that the best response to this lol.......I am just trying to point it out lol
So far the worthwhile roms are touched by gs3, aokp and cm9.....cm10 now lol but that is laggy maybe its my phone who knows
The other two are well on the way to being amazing just need stability responsiveness and MHL ability
Also why isnt the CM9 for our phone official? ATT version is.....
You're blind........ The clear and only choice, Blu Kuban. It blows everything else out of the water. Like somebody else said, get a new phone or you can develop your own rom to your specifications.

Oh dear why must that be the response I get? I hate to say this but if you purchase a gnex and give it to me I will take it lol
And as you said the only choice doesnt really give the impression of choice lol
Have the devs moved on to other phones? Are they working on something awesome?

As I said, if you don't like the choice in roms which there are a lot, develop your own.

Check the development section. Plenty of options for you. Hell, there are even builds of JB for this device not even posted on here.

Whys that always another typical response? Why cant it be something like maybe they are working on something else? Why must I get smartallecky remarks?
