[Q] NFC - Samsung Galaxy Nexus

Hey guys. Can someone direct me to the best place to buy NFC tags? I want ones that can hold the most data for the lowest price, and I would like them to also be a little sturdy, unlike some of the sticker NFC tags. Also, what is the best application to program these? Make sure these all work with the Galaxy Nexus (LTE). Thanks

I got mine from here: http://tagsfordroid.com
They are great. The keychain is very handy for my car setup.

For some reason, I bought my tagsfordroid NFC tags from Amazon instead of directly from them... both were the same price, both had free shipping. At any rate, the keychain alone was worth the price of the entire package. I have mine set as an "escape" function that someone else here posted. Basically, I keep the keychain in my pocket, and if I wave my phone over my pocket, it will trigger the tag, send a text message to the website ifttt.com, which will trigger a phone call to my phone that says "You need to come home now, it's an emergency, it's bad!"
So if I am ever in need of an escape, like a bad date, I have an escape, lol!

hhaha thats such a good idea

otterbox defender case!

Just browsed around Otterbox's site and boom! They finally have the defender case! It won't come cheap at $90
www.otterbox.com/MOTOROLA-XOOM-Defe...OM1_color=20&start=1&cgid=motorola-xoom-cases
this will have a built in kick stand; so as soon as I deal with the whole sending the Xoom to get upgraded and such, then I plan to get this ultimate case since the whole point of having this one is to take it on a road and definitely make some usage as a hotspot device.

That's exactly what I'm looking for! Awesome!!
I saw this in action at CTIA today, had great construction as usual Otterboxes, but I have these issues with it...
1) No 'folder' style for 'front' protection when in a briefcase/etc.
2) they didn't address the poor charger location by allowing a prop up
It's a great product if you like the open face style, but IMO, when storing it during travels - a screen protector isn't always enough. Personally- I'll hold out for a folio with an integrated KB.
I saw one distributer that had a magnetic bluetooth keyboard with folio; it fit the xoom perfectly. Unfortunately he didn't sell direct. He's looking for a bulk purchase and will let me know what reseller he finds. I'll post more info in a seperate thread when that happens.

I thought the outer layer (with the stand) can be taken out and attached to the front? That should cover the screen during travelling.
Me no like, too bulky and hard - its not a phone for christs sake!
Xoom is more of a laptop with its weight and size... and how often have you dropped your laptop?

Are guys going to get it now or wait till after the hardware upgrade?

Hm..
Well, My Xoom needs protection just as much protection now as it will after the LTE upgrade. My vote goes to getting it when its released.
Ah there's a youtube video on a prototype of the case.
Should answer some of your questions.

I'm actually more interested in details about the portfolio with the keyboard (I know this thread is about the Otterbox but the news got me excited)

Samsung Bluetooth Keyboard Case

Hi guys. I am really interested in buying one of these.
http://www.dodgybastards.co.nz/bluetooth-keyboard-case-for-10-1-galaxy.html
I was wondering if any of you guys own this? If anyone does would you mind giving me your opinion on this case?
There seem to be next to no reviews of this case out there whereas there are a lot of reviews about the zagg and Logitech cases. Unfortunately those brands oonly sell cases for ipad here in new zealand. Thanks
I own this and am quite happy with it. Looks good and the keyboard is a joy to type on.
Two things I'm not very happy about are weight (unavoidable, I guess) and, mostly, that there is no way to use it with the tab in portrait mode. Oh, and I think it is a tad too expensive.
I would have bought the Logitech, if only I could. For the portrait mode. But I don't at all regret having bought the Samsung.
You can see the thing in action on Youtube (mind you, in Italian). I was going to post the link but, as a new user, I can't. Search for "Tastiera originale Samsung per Galaxy Tab 8.9 e 10.1"

thanks for your reply mate, really appreciate it. yeh its a tad expensive isnt it, thats why I wanted some opinions before buying it. I never use my tablets in potrait mode, unless I am reading a comic which is very rare. the 10.1 just looks silly in potrait if you ask me lol
Also, I usually prefer to have it on my lap rather than on desks, does the stand sit stable on laps? because the stand kinda looks weak and unstable. I know it'll be fine on desks and tables but does it slide around when in your lap?
The stand is indeed very flimsy. OK for a table or desk, provided we don't push or pull the keyboard. As for a lap, I hadn't even considered it. Well, I just tried and... no. Absolutely not.
It is sort of possible to forget about the stand and leave the tablet flat. Requires one hand to hold it or it will hit the floor in no time. Not practical at all.
After I bought the Samsung case, I saw a Logitech look-alike on Amazon UK. I wouldn't really risk buying one now because: 1) I already own a very nice keyboard case, and 2) the only sellers offering it have appalingly low ratings. Still, if it works as advertised and one could find a reputable source...
Again, no links. But try searching for "Wireless Bluetooth Keyboard Aluminum Case for Samsung Galaxy Tab10.1"...

I got one from Amazon real nice Fuax lwther with built in Bluetooth Keyboard. I paid $47.95 plus shipping about a month ago but just went to get the link and its on sale for $39.95.
this works perfectly.

hey thanks for the link bro. I've owned similar cases for other tablets before and I really dont like the rubber keyboards on them.
oh and I went ahead and bought the samsung keyboard dock instead of the keyboard case. the dock is great. since it has got the 30 pin connector, the tab slots right in and you dont have to worry about it falling. and most importantly the dock sits stable on my lap and I can type just like a normal laptop. it doesnt move around. I really like it
omg that one is too expensive dude..
maybe you can check Apple bluetooth Keyboard.. quite good man. it's light, good materials and 100% compatible.
Logitech bluetooth keyboard is a very good choice aswell.
good luck bro.
I have the Zagg case and it is pretty great. I also have the Samsung white keyboard which is almost perfect except that it will revert to the Samsung on screen keyboard after using it . This is a pain since I use touchpal.
The new OEM keyboard case looks handsome but not as useful as Zagg.

Thanks
this case looks indeed awesome guys. but the price wtf....
its just a keyboard with buildin bluetooth and a case!! ok its oem but who cares, not worth the money i think.
for a -50% offer i would buy it!

Yes, it can. There's four little rubber stops that keep the keys off the screen when closed that double as feet when fold the keyboard under the way you described. And while yes, it's pricey, it's the slimmest, best fitting, and best made of the keyboard cases out there.
I purchased the official case cover a few days ago from Samsung. I am shocked about how few reviews there have been online. I could not find a decent video review. I am hoping that the build quality is decent, as my Zagg keyboard (Zaggfolio) broke - the space bar no longer works. I will probably take the replacement keyboard they sent me and sell it on ebay.
By the way, I saved 15% by using the coupon code: Samsung#1 on the Samsung.com website and got free next day air shipping.

Here is my review of the Samsung OEMKeyboard case.
Pro's
Very light, form fitting, well designed. Easy to type on.
Con's
No touchpad, no sd port, no built in battery, pretty expensive, cannot really use effectively in the portrait mode.
Overall, this is clearly superior to the Zaggfolio. .. but pales in comparison to the Asus Transformer keyboard (which is the same MSRP).

Just got this case today and I must say I am completely happy with this purchase.
It literally turns your tablet into a laptop.
Duqjag complains about not having a touch pad however the entire screen is a touch pad which would make a little square panel obsolete and difficult to use.
My only quarms with this keyboard is the left shift key being so small that you'll find yourself with a lot of \\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\ on your screen when trying to capitalize a letter.
Also if there were a way to make certain trigger keys customizable this would enhance the experence too. e.g. the mail button opens the mail app as opposed to the google mail app. Internet button opens the stock browser as opposed to Opera or dolphin.
It stands up on almost every surface without issue and if you fold the keyboard over it also acts as a bottom panel to keep the screen in a face up position.
Vertically it doesnt work but do laptops????
Fork out the cash I say and enjoy the ride. As tablets get better internally, 10.1 will still be a dimension samsung keeps using so i can confidentally say that this case will be transferable to newer models.
Hi,
I've got the Samsung BT-Keyboard-Case here in Germany for a really affordable price - 57,- €, and it is worth every cent. The look and feel of the case is noble, but durable, and when I carry it arround here at my college the I-Thing-users get possessive.
It has a built-in recharable battery which lasts for some 3 days. I use it flipped over as a night stand at my bed, listening to Tune-in radio, I work with it every day, and the cover protects the case perfectly.
The only con is that it doubles the weight of the pure tab, but I really can say that I am happy with it and would always buy it again.
I am looking for keyboard as well, want something nice, shineny neath, but inexpensive. (Not sure it does exist )
Are those aluminum bluetooth keyboard on ebay and amazon so useless? Any suggestion pls.
If i can not find any good review on those no brand keyboard i might have to buy logitech and it costs fortune

[Update 5.16.12] (Magnetic) Steelie Mobile Device Holder W/pics

Anybody heard of this new car mount yet?
Steelie Mobile Device Holder
They also have an iPad tabletop stand.
Just ordered the car kit cause It looks like a great product. I love this idea!!!
The best thing is that if you send them your case. They'll punch a hole in it so that the magnet can mount straight to the phone and is a little more discrete.
They were originally on Kickstarter and almost doubled their goal.
Just wanted to post/support a (what seems to me like a great product) that is MADE IN THE U.S.A.
What do you guys think?
And no I am not affiliated with them in any way.
*****Update 5.16.12*****
Just received the car kit!
Includes:
1 x STEELIE Ball
1 x STEELIE Socket
1 x Alcohol prep pad
1 x Primer stick
1 x Instructions
Uploaded some photo's to show all that is included with instructions.
Also dims of "STEELIE Ball" (for dashboard) and "STEELIE socket" (for phone).
Will update in a few more days with results in
*Ease of use
*Ease if installation
*Durability
*GPS interference (if any)
*Anything you all might ask in the meantime
Im not 100% positive, but i think this will mess your GPS and NFC obviously.

That's unfortunate. Did you try to email them to see if they can help you with possibly offering different shipping options?
Saw these guys at a small town fair in Louisville, CO a week ago. Looked like a good product and the guys who own the company were very enthusiastic and helpful. I specifically asked about GPS interference etc. and they said they'd evaluated several phones with no issues.
I also expressed concern about the size/thickness of the engagement point on the phone and they said that they were working on a lower profile version.
Would really like to see these guys do well. Another small business emerging from middle-class America. Gotta love that.
Similar idea to tetrax, but may be easier to find a mounting spot since it looks like it doesn't need the same sq inch spot if you're not using the vent mounted version.
Wow, this is awesome and perfect for my needs! Just went in for one!
I have a window mount currently but it's a pain if I want to rotate it at all because you have to loosen the ball joint and then tighten it back up. And it's almost impossible to do it with the phone in the holder while keeping it at the angle you want.
That, and the suction cup will fall off from time to time. I've also gotten "yelled at" by a cop for having it up as well, so this will "obstruct my view" way less!
This is so much simpler to use, even though it will add a slight bit of bulk.

Thanks for posting about this here, Iv been researching this product everywhere that I can, but its a hard product to find info about, and whats even worse is that the company has not returned my calls or emails in 3 days since contacting them. Either way I found the steelie product on sale here and I already bought it. http://www.123inkcartridges.ca/accessories-product/ST_C.html and now Im hoping it can be used with my galaxy note i717. Now this is a big phone, probably the biggest and heaviest on the market and im worried it will not work. Does anyone know if my phone will work? Also the steelie on this website looks different than all the other steelie pictures iv found, is the one I bought an older or newer version of the steelie? I already contacted 123 ink cartridges and they assured me that its not counterfeit.
Let us know how the thing feels with a big ol', honkin' magnet on the back of it. I'm intrigued, but think having a magnet the size of a 50-cent piece on the back of my GNex would make my having a pretty custom case rather pointless.
The site also says it doesn't interfere with NFC. I'm dubious and would love to hear from some third parties.

NEVER MIND! the one i bought was a counterfeit... lame. oh well im getting a refund on it.
Any updates?
I see that they offer the Steelie Magnetic Phone Socket for purchase by itself, but dont see it listed for sale anywhere. Would be nice for different cell phone uses that drive the same car. I guess you could always mount it to a easy to swap out phone case if you have the same phone as other users.

Buying Xperia SmartTags or something similar for GNex

hello,
I own a GSM Samsung Galaxy Nexus (4.0.4) and I would like to buy a couple of NFC tags. I would like to use them to change settings when I enter my car and before I sleep .. etc. Looking at the available options, I really disliked the adhesive tags and preferred something like the Xperia SmartTags. My question is:
- If I purchase Xperia SmartTags, will they work properly with my Galaxy Nexus?
- Are there any available alternatives that are similar to Xperia SmartTags in design (being a key chain, not the colors) but cheaper?
- If I'm located in Denver, Colorado in the USA. Where is the best place that I can get them?
Thank a lot.
Samsung released their own sets of NFC tags, TecTiles: http://www.samsung.com/us/microsite/tectile/
The TecTiles are indeed awesome. I bought a pack after picking up my GS3. I was playing around with it, and it also works for the GS2, so I guess as long as you have a NFC chip in your phone/battery, this will work. I already put one in the car to turn on/off bt options for when I enter the car
TecTiles are overpriced. They cost 3x as much as generic tags.

I just bought some smart tags from ebay for gs3. Looking forward to trying them out. I bought the smart tags because I like how you can place them on your key chain. They seem to be more sturdy than others. I'll report back once I get them and program them.

Post your NFC experience

Which stickers did you buy?
Where did you put them?
What app did you use to program?
How are you using NFC?
I am excited about using it and would love to hear success stories.
Tested the beam feature the other day with a friend who has a gnex as well.
It was kind of awkward to hold the phones back to back while also tapping on the screen to be able to beam things. Kind felt like it'd be easy to lose grip and drop the phone
I put the tag on my self made desk dock to trigger wifi, sync and auto-rotation using NFC retag.
