Looks like we have ET4G screen wake up lag - Sprint Samsung Galaxy Note II

Ive noticed slight lag on wake up today which didn't sink in until QBking77 latest review of SGN2.
It brought back bad memory's of ET4G days f,sure
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=II7FwNEWBMk&list=UUbR6jJpva9VIIAHTse4C3hw&index=1&feature=plcp

noticed the lag as well

me too...i can get almost 1 1/2 seconds....not happy with that..but still love the phone.

Yeah its about the same for me.
You would think a 300 device wouldn't have such issue but sure enough sprint gets the dud.
ET4G has same thing going on , Maybe its Exynos processor / CDMA hardware bug of some sort...something not syncing right

Disable double tap to start s voice, in s voice settings. That may help a bit. That option seemed to have caused a bit of lag on the s3.

its on the international version too

Whoooops
NVM.......

I spoke with Sprint tech support directed them to lag video and their investigating.
I recommend everyone else do the same.
You can also tweet @sprintcare and @SamsungMobileUS
Its a sweet device and deserves attention on getting wakeup lag fixed so don't slack!
Get the word out

not a "tweeter"..but i threw this video up on sprints FB page...thanks to QBking for the vid..i can live with the lag but no data while on a call...wait til apple gets wind of this..you can bet it'll be in their next commercial..how the hell is the "ultimate business device" while we're missing emails because we are on phone calls....unreal.....

That would make Apple look dumb. Not having data and voice at the same time is a sprint issue not a Samsung issue.

I don't think so. I'm aware of CDMA restrictions but our phone is designed not to support simultaneous voice and data by Samsung.
GSIII can do it because it was designed that way.
I read somewhere here that it has to do with Exynos.

It is a sprint issue like someone else mentioned, why in the world would Samsung limit it's top of the line phones?

I'm not sure how it could it be a sprint issue if they have other devices that can do it. I read somewhere that it has to do with the design of the phone as well. Don't have the link otherwise I'd post it. If I find it again I'll post

We can do LTE + Voice, but to make the SoC compatible with all carriers instead of having different SoC for each technology (this is why we are finally getting a quad core phone) it looks like they had to combine voice + data for 3g.

hmm maybe something to work with hack wise.
Ive found wakeup lag doesn't occur when device is fully charged plugged into charger.
Give it a try be amazed how GN2 owners on other networks feel waking up device

This is just like the ET4G. While charging there apparently must be something that never fully goes to sleep, since battery life is irrelevant when hooked up to the wall. I was under the impression this is related to the mSD hardware.

Well in ET4G case you didn't have to be fully charged on charger for lag to disappear.
When GN2 hits full charge led turns green but turns off when you wake device then
device goes back into sleep LED comes back on unlike ET4G

Cool video. on the network speeds. I'd rather not see so clearly how slow sprint speeds are so I can live in my happy phone land.
The only disagreement I'd have is that there is one other thing the Nexus has on our phone:
That is one beautiful screen...

the area where phonedog is located just seems to have terrible sprint coverage where as if you look at wirefly reviews, sprint 4g gets over 10mbps. that's why I think reviews should be done with wifi instead of carrier signal (phonedog uses 3g for their reviews).
My thoughts on the two phones:
GNexus
Pros:
Great Screen/Resolution
Ice Cream Sandwich
Verizon Network (BLAZING 4G speed compared to Sprint/T-Mobile out here)
Cons:
No expandable memory (but 32GB for LTE model is solid)
Usable screen space - When the menu buttons are visible, it has less physical screen real estate than the E4GT from my hands-on comparison (ignoring resolution advantage).
Awkward shape and "taller" than the E4GT
"Feel" is lacking
Lackluster hardware
E4GT
Pros:
Expandable memory
Shape and Feel
Faster GPU
Cons:
Touchwiz, Touchwiz, and Touchwiz (Which is OK for 2.3, but not ICS IMO)
No Official Ice Cream Sandwich Yet - And when we do get it it will be Touchwiz-burdened
Sprint Network
The only real advantage for me when comparing the two phones was Ice Cream Sandwich. I did not care for the feel of the LTE GNexus and was not happy with Verizon (did not like the price, limited data, or the sales people), so I gave Sprint my business instead and ended up with the E4GT. I LOVE this phone, I just wish that the Sprint network was a bit more robust out here in Colorado.
My two cents anyway.
I think the screen on the ET is much better than the screen on the nexus. the nexus has more pixels but thats it.
as for the other cons I don't get it. First thing I did was ditch touchwiz. that is a "user option" not a con. install whatever launcher you want.
Sprint may be slower but its cheaper and its truly unlimited.
what is the point of 20MB/s if you use up all your available bandwidth in a few days? or even HOURS ?
I am confident sprint will "fix up" the bandwidth issues.
as for verizon they are irrelevant. moot. I can't afford the monthly bill so its a non issue.
If I spent that much money on a GNex, and then took it home and ran a ~1600 quadrant score, I'd wanna just vomit all over myself.
(Yeah, I know the old mantra: "quadrants don't mean sh*t", but still: there's gotta be a lot of credit given to the exynos processor to crank out ~4500 scores right out of the box.)

My only worry is we will have to wait longer for ICS because they will concentrate on the Note. I don't think I will jump ship. Something better is coming the second quarter.
On my Epic mobile phone.
May have to jump on this. One problem might be slower updates than normal due to the modified version of touchwiz that comes along with having the stylus

I would really love to have this bad boy but not on sprint. I will pass until later in the year to see what comes out on not just sprint but other carriers.
Also if sprint does infact put this out then they better put out the full specs and not try to hide the crippling they do aka E4GT. Sprint better be upfront and honest and not try to pull the wool over any eyes this time.
Cant wait until the true hardware specs comes out. Lets see if sprint uses a 6 year old chip in it like they did the E4GT aka cheaped out.

It looks like a version possibly for att has surfaced, but it uses a qualcomm cpu like the tmo gs2, hopefully that is not the case or this would be a downgrade. More display real-estate and pixel density with a lesser cpu, no thanks.
If this turns out to be the exynos, that is going to be a hard decision.

Giving up on nexus

Tried two and that's when I knew I better get out now before my 15 days was over. I must say , the galaxy nexus was the coolest phone I've ever used. Ics is amazing as is the beautiful screen on the nexus.
The dropped calls, bad battery life, below average camera, missed calls, texts that never were, pitiful LTE reception, and defective screen are all a few of the problems I couldn't live with anymore.
Bummer. Good luck with your next phone.

100%. Oh what's that...you are not going to use the phone we all have? Thanks for sharing.....
As for everyone else...9 Android devices in a year...not because I am unhappy with them but because I LOVE phones and new technology. My only gripes are how annoying MTP is and the lack of an SD card slot. A kick stand could be cool, but overall.....10/10.

I would love to see stats comparing failure rates, scratched screens and bugs between the GSM and LTE version. Going on Reddit, XDA and a few other sources the LTE device seems to be far more problematic.
I was going to write a longer reply to this thread, but I'm to busy posting in forums for phones I don't own.
I just don't understand the point (if there is any) of threads like this one. Everyone has the right to their own opinion but what do they expect out of these threads? That may be true, but theres clearly an overall higher count of LTE users on XDA here. The international crowd (and US importers) are the minority of the "general user" type conversing here.
My screen has "grain" and the mini popping speaker sound. Plus no warranty and this is still the best Android phone to date IMO

Extremely laggy 3G

Hi all,
I'm running Aero's 7-12 CM9 / 10.5 BFS, and have noticed extremely laggy 3G.
Not laggy in the traditional sense though. It's when I open a program that needs to access the internet, it takes 10+ seconds to pull anything down.
Lets say I open Tapatalk. When I click a forum, it will take 10 seconds just to "connect" to forum - to download any data at all.
Same thing in a browser, Opera Mini for example. The first time I open it up, I'll do a google search, and it will be 10+ seconds before it appears any sort of data has been sent. Then I switch over to Reddit News, open my front page, and it's 10+ seconds before anything appears at all. Once it appears, it's fine and fast.
On Wifi no problems at all. But on 3G, each new program I open that uses the internet will take 10+ seconds to connect, then after that it's responsive and fine.
Has anyone else run into this issue at all? I've tried the V6 / 3G supercharger and it seems to have no effect. I don't remember having this problem before, nor do I recall when it started happening.
I'm guessing a clean wipe / reinstall would fix issues, but am curious to see if there are any other solutions out there.
Any suggestions are appreciated.
Best regards,
-Dirk
Ever since I reformatted my sd card my 3g has been a lot faster. Like it's actually usable now and I don't have to get on wifi as much as I can.
Did you just format to fat32 and restore what you previously had on it (i.e. music, pics, etc.)?
fat32 and 64k and I just copied back music and pix. But after that I was even tethering and getting 2 mbps so who knows.
Thanks for cursing me Dirk. My 3g has been dog slow all day now.

I wasn't serious either. But we all know that if HTC tries to fix the 3G, Apple will be all over their butts. That's what happened with the One X anyways.
Its all a ridiculous mess really when you think about it. It's not like HTC started the litigation period anyways.

Yep that's probably apple's next marketing slogan "with iPhone you know it will be available when you want it *fine print* because its the only one we didn't have banned." Honestly I have nothing against the iPhone itself other than the tiny screen, but Apple's business practice is down right pathetic. I would rather wipe my you know what with my money than give a dime to that scumbag, elitist, "your phone is selling so you must have copied us, quick lets buy the patent so we can say that we came up with the idea" company.

OP, have you tried any other roms?

Lol...
I have tried other roms, but not recently (been on CM9 for a while now). I suppose in the interest of troubleshooting I should load up another rom just to make sure the issue is confined to my current CM9 installation.
Will report back when I've done so!
If you use over 2.5G a month and am on a grandfathered unlimited data plan.... You're affected by Verizon's Network Optimization (AKA throttled).
I know I am and it sucks!

It is because of the kernel you using!!
Try some other kernels.. CFS based..!!

Fixed
Most people never get throttled on grandfathered unlimited plans. I know I don't. I have used 15gb a month for 6 months in a row. No throttling here. If you do get throttled it is only after 5gb unless they changed that extremely recently.

I'm a manager at a call center and use groove IP to listen to my reps calls for 8+ hours a day so I don't have to use my minutes. It let's you make calls over 3g and I download a lot of ROMs too.

Has been for the last ~6 years.
I stream Pandora 10-11 hours a day and watch movies daily.
I'll notice (while on the road Truckin') my DL speeds float around 2.25-2.75 Mb/s until I get home (Portland, Or.) and it'll hit 2.5 (Mb/s) but immediately drop to .5

[Q] Screen brightness auto-changes without any auto-adjust on.

I have all possible options that can auto-control the screen brightness unchecked, and the mode set to Dynamic (even if it's on any other one too), and my brightness set at 45 (again this doesn't matter as I changed it to other brightnesses), but I still see the brightness auto-adjust from time to time. It doesn't matter what app I'm in, or just looking at the home screen. Does anyone else have this happen? Is there a way to make it stay where I have it set? It's not really annoying, but I do notice it, and would like it to stay put.
I had this happen on the S4 and note 3. Supposedly it's a Samsung thing. I did see this though

It's happening to me I made a thread on it too, I've called Sammy and done everything I could I think it's a software issue or one of the sensors is jacked up. In any event I gave it a few days and it's not getting any better it's very annoying to me so I'm returning my phone and getting another one just to make sure it's not a hardware issue. It's the only reason I haven't rooted yet
Its exactly what you see there TW has A " feature ' that dims screen a bit When Itgets a little hot that ls all it is, not hardware problems mine does It when its hot near the camera

Well mine is going back anyways so i can rule out Hardware failure before i root it, Also when i talked to samsung about it they said return the device
So you rule out hardware issues? Maybe the software like I said?. And by the way Samsung always says return. Everything...it's their go to answer for everything lol

Listen to what i wrote i said im returning it to rule out hardware issues, if the new device does it then its definitely software and illl wait for some kind of an update or wait for a dev to get a handle on it. S4 from doing research had the same issues so yes most likely its software but i have to rule out hardware by returning it and getting a new device. My Note 2 did not do this so im assuming its a TW 4.3 issue
Ok...

Other than that i love the phone , awesome device
In the last week I bought a S3 and a N3.
Both do this almost identically.
I thought I was going nutz...
Returning it won't help. It was happening on three S4s of mine.

Conclusion: It's not a phone defect.
I have done some testing, and concluded (at least for me) it is software/hardware combo as said previously (heating up). Since I have the phone set up exactly how I want it (rooted and all), and I really don't want to return it since the phone itself is perfect (no physical defects with buttons, screen, etc), I kept a really good watch on when it does it, and it only does it after I have the screen on for like an hour or so, and the phone itself gets warm/hot. If the temp stays below 95F the brightness stays constant. Only if it gets up in the 100s I start to see it, so I do believe it's auto-dimming to cool off the phone. I can live with that since it doesn't get that hot all the time. Mostly playing games, or heavy browsing on the web using desktop mode, and when it does do it the change is slight. I only really notice it on white screens. I was worried since I thought it was a defect, but that doesn't seem to be the case. I'm super happy with this beast. Best phone I ever owned.
On a related note I do remember my GSII doing it on TW. After I put CM on it I never saw it.
Lux is the answer to tame that issue with auto brightness

No lux is not the answer I tried that too. I just got my new phone after returning it and it does the same thing . As BobbyPhoenix stated I think it's software related too and it's when the phone gets warm and I think how much it adjusts is based on how hot it gets. I guess I'll have to live with it because I love this phone the screen when full blast puts all others to shame. Hopefully a dev will have a workaround soon

My wife's S3 does the same on Lux, maybe acts a little different but basically overall it's schizophrenic. It's possible it's goofier with Lux installed. Now there is another layer to manage.
