[Q] AT&T Updates vs UK International Updates? - Galaxy Note II Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I am looking to buy the international version and not the AT&T pretty much for the sole purpose of receiving timely updates which AT&T doesn't have a good record of. I do not care about not having LTE either.
This may be a stupid question, but does anyone know with certainty that the international will get the updates when having a AT&T sims installed?

Yes. You will get the update. It does not matter what sim you have in there. I had the original international Note and was using ATT sim. I did get the updates.

I doubt the SIM makes a difference, but remember you can always push the update yourself with Kies or Odin.
In your opinion and for update purpose which would you buy?
If your top priority is rapid official updates, the international version will almost certainly be better. AT&T is notorious for delaying official updates.
I bought the AT&T version because I'm more concerned with having LTE than I am with receiving official updates.

Best Galaxy Note 2 version to use on AT&T LTE Network?

Hey folks,
I was originally considering purchasing the Note 3, as currently T-Mobile's Note 3 is the best to use on AT&T's LTE network since it doesn't come with a locked bootloader. However, I figured I'd purchase the less expensive Note 2 since I can't justify the $700+ price yet.
Which Samsung Note 2 version is not only the best to use on AT&T's LTE network but comes with the least bloatware? Is is the AT&T version, International version, or one of the Canadian versions? Will Android updates through the AT&T version come out as soon as it's available, or will it be anything like the Galaxy S2 Skyrocket where updates were released 3254320512 years later?
I'd also like to be able to use international sim cards when traveling abroad.
Much appreciated, thanks.

I cant talk too much on the first question, although I would guess that the ATT version will be the best, but if any of the others can operate on the same LTE bands they should work as well, although I would be careful with modem versions/etc,
As for the updates, ATT is usually slow, but then again most carriers are. Only way to get the fastest updates is to get an unbranded international Note 2
I got an AT&T Note II and had little difficulty rooting it and installing CleanROM, which got rid of a lot of the bloatware. More recently I went to CyanogenMod-based ROM, and now there's no Samsung software at all to worry about. That also takes care of the update issue since I don't have to wait for the carrier to update.
Yep, the best version will be the ATT version. As far as the updates go, it'll be getting the 4.3 update around mid-late November per all the leaks. Otherwise you can root it and flash a ROM that has no bloatware.

Buying from Samsung instead of carrier

Hey, I plan to buy my Galaxy so from Samsung rather than my carrier (ATT). I have a couple questions. Will I just be able to add the Sim currently in my Galaxy say or will I need a new one? Also, will I have to take it into the store?
Just put your existing soon card in and away you go. No need for anything else. It's what I did when I got my Note 8 from Samsung.
If you buy it from Samsung, the phone it's unlocked, so you can use any valid SIM (including the one you are currently using now).
Samsung has an unlocked model available on their website along with carrier specific models. I would think the carrier specific models are the same as the phones you would get at a AT&T or Verizon store. Correct me if I'm wrong.

I'd like to know this as I would like an unlocked bootloader but.... I would like the Carrier version for some additional features like VoLTE/VoWifi.
Right now I'm torn between just going to Best Buy (since in the states) or just getting it directly from Samsung.
The carrier versions will have the standard carrier bloat pre-installed.
I can't find the exact band specifications of each of the models... Does anyone know if the hardware/antenna chips will be the same on T-Mobile vs. unlocked from Samsung? I am assuming there are certain bands missing from the unlocked version if you plan on using T-mobile's network, but I can't confirm this....
Best Buy's doing a $100 off if you preorder on Friday just heads up.

And if you have an s8 or other qualifying phone you can get a total of $450 off I believe on Friday from Best Buy.

I too had the same questions and this is what I found. I don't know how accurate it is.

It looks like the answer to our question is on this page: https://www.techwalls.com/samsung-galaxy-s9-sm-g960-g965-model-number-differences/
The T-Mobile version seems to be missing the following, in comparison to the unlocked US version:
4G FDD LTE B71 (600 mhz) - This is T-Mobile's new spectrum... this seems important to have (just google t-mobile 600mhz)
2G CDMA and 3G CDMA - I don't believe this matters to us
3G TD-SCDMA B34 and B39 (2010 and 1880mhz) - I assume these will be missed if outside LTE coverage?
But in general, the unlocked version seems to support more bands than the Tmo version
So, it seems if one is on the T-Mobile network and plans to stay there, they really should get the T-Mobile version of the phone.... someone please correct me if I'm wrong.

You do know that unlocked isn't meaning unlocked bootloader right? It's meaning unlocked bands

I'm with AT&T and I'm pretty sure there will be no wifi calling on any phone other than the AT&T version. That's a feature I want. If it doesn't matter to you an unlocked phone may be for you. I don't know for a fact that wifi calling won't work on an unlocked S9 but if it does, it will be the first. I don't want the extra carrier apps but they aren't going to cause me any grief on a beast like this phone. I'd rather have the services the carrier provides if I'm going to use them. If It turns out that wifi calling works on the unlocked S9, I may revise my plan but I doubt that will happen. I'm pretty much done with the rooting/modding stuff so that isn't an issue. Even the master hackers are going with stock phones d/t the features and security.

Recommended Rootable Verizon Phones?

Hello, I have been with Verizon the last few years and I'm in the market for a new phone. I see on SlickDeals that there is a deal for the Verizon Samsung S10/S10+, but after reading through some of the posts, it seems you can't root the Verizon S10/S10+.
Since I don't need the latest and greatest phone from Verizon, are there any 'older', new in-store models that can be rooted so that I can install a custom ROM, etc?
Thanks in advance!
Your best bet is to get another phone that's not Verizon branded and just activate it on Verizon. You'd be going back a few years to get a Verizon phone that's rootable.
Thank you for this information... a couple of things getting another phone that is not Verizon branded:
- Previously, one would need to make sure they get a 'CDMA' (vs GSM) phone, but is there any technology, etc I need to look for when trying to find a non-Verizon phone?
- I assume if I get a 'non' branded Verizon phone, that some of the Verizon specific features may not work, e.g. WiFi calling, etc?

I can only answer the 2nd part of your question. Once you activate it on a Vzw sim you can flash Vzw firmware and get all the same features

Thanks for this... that makes sense. The only other things is regarding the Verizon frequency bands - I'm guessing some phones may not have or support all of the Verizon frequency bands.

S20+ Exynos (SM-G986B) support on AT&T

Hi,
I haven't been able to find a clear answer to this, but does the international S20+ work on AT&T's 5G and mmWave network? From what I can tell the phone has RF support for AT&T's 5G bands including mmWave (n260), but does the phone actually register on their network?
I'm coming from the S7 where I was used to flashing a CSC or OMC for AT&T in order to get VoLET and WIFI calling. Is there ATT CSC or OMC support for this phone yet particularly for 5G and mmWave support? I couldn't really find anything.
Thanks!

What don't you understand? You're looking for clear answers since you really can't find anything. First you need to realize ATT Firmware including their CSC isn't compatible with your Exynos SoC. Secondly, why not ask the Service Provider in question (ATT) since they're best suited to resolve compatibility issues?

Maybe I should have been more clear...What I'm really asking is if anyone currently has an unlocked international variant and is running it on AT&T, and if so, does it connect to their 5G mmWave service?
Its been my experience that the people who work at ATT stores don't know anything about anything. So no I'm not going to waste my time asking someone who will just try to tell me what I want to hear or flat out say no because they don't know what their talking about.
Yes a carrier's CSC is technically not compatible with an international unlocked phone but it still works. There are a whole bunch of people running custom or stock CSCs on non-carrier hardware, myself included.

Your device isn't compatible with ATT mmWave regardless of the CSC or FW. Nor does it matter that your device operates on the same 4G and 5G frequencies ATT engages. It has to do with ATT Protocols which restrict functionality to select devices.
ATT is by far the worst when it comes to compatibility alignment for Non-ATT devices. If call features, carrier aggregation and services are a priority then stick with your service provider's branded device.
