[MODS] [MA7] Cam Shutter Sound (feature.xml), Hidden Menu, Call Rec, PRLs, and more - Sprint Samsung Galaxy Note II

UPDATED: FEB 23, 2013 - FOR MA7
Mods found in the feature.xml (located in "/system/csc/feature.xml")
Edit on a PC or you may have issues. Use a (root) file manager to move it only.
As always, make a back up first...
1. Camera Shutter Sound Menu
Download Zip Here (LJC) for those that would like to just flash it.
Download Zip Here (MA7) for those that would like to just flash it.
(this is only the Camera Shutter Sound)
First- Edit the build.prop (located in "/system/build.prop")

<CscFeature_Camera_ShutterSoundMenu>true</CscFeature_Camera_ShutterSoundMenu>
Reboot and enjoy the ability to turn off and on the shutter sound.
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

6. Call Recording Mod
IF YOU ARE ODEXED... Delete the SecPhone.odex first!! (/system/app/SecPhone.odex)
Here is the Modded SecPhone.apk that will give you the Call Recording Feature. (/system/app/SecPhone.apk)
Note: If you are a person that uses or cares about the swap calls button during a call, this will take it away.
Be sure to wipe the Dalvik Cache...
Mod info was pulled from multiple Roms that had it, but credit goes to PhantomHacker I believe?

These are the same as the GS3, found here. You'll need you MSL for some things. You can just call Sprint and they will give it to you. Also, they email it to you when you activate your device on their site.
##DEBUG# Menu (code: 777468)
is one I use a lot. The only place you can see the signal strength of your Lte or 3G. The bars at the top are for voice only.
##DATE# Menu
Here you can force LTE only, another I'll play with too.
##MSL# Menu
View - view current phone number/msid set.
Edit - write new phone number/msid

Test LCD, Touch, Pen, and other sensors.

I tried this on my rooted Sprint SGN2 and cant get this to work. After editing build.prop and feature.xml, all the secondary keys disappeared on my soft keyboard. Reverting the two files from backup corrects the problem. Did anyone else try this?

Editing on my computer worked. I guess using es file explorers text editor wasnt good.
Thanks!

Moving to Themes and Apps as this is a modification to apps and not a "mod" in the XDA sense of the word, meaning development work modding ROMs, kernels, etc.

Is there any sort of breakdown sheet on what some of these things do exactly? Some of them i wouldnt know exactly what changes they would be making by chaing from true to false or visa versus.
Thanks in advance.

I know I am a noob here, but what is the process to install one of the zip files above? Everytime I try it says the file is read only and system file and I can not replace it. Let me if someone has an easy way to install them. Thank you.

That is a flashable zip. To install it you must be rooted, reboot to recovery and select install from zip. Then navigate to the directory you have the zip downloaded and select and flash it.
Otherwise again you will need to be rooted, and using a root file explorer you will need to manually modify the build.prop and/or feature.xml .
If you haven't rooted your device yet, there is a thread under general on how to root which has a youtube walk through which makes it very easy.
Hope this helps.

Holy sh!t. Word of warning:
DO NOT do the Wacom test late at night when your wife is already asleep. After you fill in all of the squares the phone emits a VERY LOUD TONE when it puts up the "Pass" message. Learn from my mistakes, please.

Thank you! So glad I can mute the camera now!

I've only changed the feature.xml setting for the contact reject list menu, it works, but made my stock email app inverted. I like it, so I'm not complaining, just giving a heads up. I think it is a side effect of modifying the file using Es file explorer on the phone. Stock, rooted, deodexed, stock kernel.

is there a mod to restore burst mode functionality like it is on the S3?
On my S3 Burst is its own mode and it does the AI Servo mode for focus (continious all the time adjusting auto focus) and when I press and hold the button BOOM it starts snapping pics.
the Note 2 is AGGRAVATINGLY different to the point where it won't work for what I need that burst mode for (shooting rockets)
in the note 2 there is no more "burst" mode instead its part of regular mode.
now if I sit their AI Focus works fine tap the button BAM instant shot BUT if I HOLD the button it does NOTHING first it does brand new full auto focus sequence AND THEN it starts the burst.
thats a huge problem when your "subject" is going to "poof" suddenly at 600mph ie it defeats the whole point of their "zero lag" improvements.
anyway to defeat that? to reenable burst as its own option with the ai driven focus and zero lag?

You might be able to try pulling the camera all from the s iii, I could be terribly wrong, but our cameras could be very similar.

[TOOLS] Screen ColourControl, Camera Enhancements, Screen Density, Boot Anim + MORE!

GALAXY NEXUS PHONE MODS
This is all part of the Galaxy Nexus ToolKit but I have made a new Thread for people who may not have noticed it, people who didnt need the ToolKit but may find some of the Mods useful or just people who want to talk about the Phone Mods specifically.
FUNCTIONS OF THE PHONE MODS SECTION V1.4 [GSM + LTE][13TH MARCH 2012]
Change the Screen Density (DPI)
CWM Recovery, Only 1 No in the Confirmation Screen
Camera Sounds (Disable/Enable Camera Shutter, Video Camera Shutter, Focus)
Camera Enhancements (Increase Video Bitrate, Sound Bitrate, Photo Quality)
Change WiFi Scan Interval (Time between scanning for new Wifi Access Points)
Startup Boot Animation Screen (Disable/Enable which affects Boot Time)
Screen Colour Control (Change Gamma Offset and Colour Multiplier)
--------------------------------------------------------------
DOWNLOAD
The Phone Mods are part of the Galaxy Nexus ToolKit. You can download the latest version *HERE* (no need to install drivers if you already have adb/fastboot drivers installed) and select option 18 in the Main Menu to enter the Phone Mods Section.

USAGE
STOCK ROM users will need to enter the Mods Section via the Galaxy Nexus ToolKit as most functions need an insecure boot image which is set up from the Model Selection Screen of the ToolKit. If you are running a CUSTOM ROM (with insecure boot image) then you can run the ModsSection.exe directly if you wish.
ALL Mods Section functions require you to be booted into Android and connected to the PC via usb with adb/fastboot drivers installed. If you havent done this already then refer to the Galaxy Nexus ToolKit Thread for setup instructions.
The Galaxy Nexus ToolKit and Mods Section are very tightly integrated and so is impossible to seperate the 2 parts unless I want to cut out Stock Rom users (which I dont) so please dont ask if I can split them up. I could but its just not worth it.
Lastly if you have any ideas for functions that can be added to the Mods Section or just want to discuss a particular function then feel free.

Already used your tool kit to root, unlock, and flash recovery!!! Awesome work you've done, it's too easy Glad to see you made a separate thread for this, I agree it got kind of lost in the original thread.

Hmm, I like the idea of being able to disable the boot animation, and I'll give the camera improvements a go and report back.
I've always tried to beat something into my geeks when I'm teaching IT classes, and that's the idea of "Do it right, make it easy". You sir, have done a great job at putting together this toolkit in a way that makes things simple, and with great documentation. Nice work!

Thank you im sure your geeks learn alot from you lol
Disabling the boot animation knocks about 5 seconds off the bootup time and there are a few Roms with not very desirable graphics lol.
Please do report back I always welcome any feedback and ideas for additions.
I get an error when trying to backup the xml file...Any ideas?
Looks great . You don't happen to have a unix version?
If anybody is having problems... Or if your using francos kernel you need to disable fast usb charge.... Hey thanks for your great work

What Rom and kernel are you using?
Are you booted into Android and connected via usb cable before starting?
I dont know where the fast usb charge option is but as the previous user posted you can try to disable that and try again.
Also if you go back into the main ToolKit are you seeing the serial number under adb at the top?

I do want to have versions of the ToolKit for Mac and Linux if I can get some testers and/or people who can help me convert the scripts. Im guessing most of the scripts should work fine as they are just adb/fastboot commands but there may be differences with pauses and some search replace routines.
Do linux bash scripts work on unix?

The enhancement does exactly what it states on the screen when you select option 4 in the phone mods section:
This mod focuses on the media_profiles.xml file in the /etc/ folder on your phone.
The x2 Quality Settings doubles the standard camcorder bitrate for 480P, 720P and 1080P [8M, 16M, 24M] as well as change the quality settings for the camera to 100, 85, 75 [from 95, 80, 70] and the memcap setting to 25000000.
The Medium Quality Settings push the camcorder bitrate up even more for 480P, 720P and 1080P [10M, 20M, 35M] as well as change the quality settings for the camera to 100, 85, 75 [from 95, 80, 70] and the memcap setting to 30000000.
The High Quality Settings push the camcorder bitrate up to the max for 480P, 720P and 1080P [14M, 30M, 50M] as well increase the Audio bitrate up to 128k and increase the Audio channels to 2. The duration setting has also been changed to 60 from 30 for the above formats. All the quality settings for the camera have been forced to 100 and the memcap setting has been pushed up to 40000000.
These 3 profiles are for testing and I hope you get improvements using them but if you want to you can customize either of them from the mods folder and push them back to your phone.
Click to collapse
As for proof that the mod works I havent taken tests shots/videos with each mod but the stock bitrates for the camcorder are a bit low so increasing it can only benefit the quality of the captured image. Whether the highest setting is neccessary or not doesnt really matter as it is upto the end user to decide if they prefer it but I would definitely recommend applying at least the 2x setting .
frenccw said:

I put a compulsory backup step in every mod section so that even on custom roms the original file can be saved to your computer before it is altered and pushed back if you dont like the changes. There is absolutely no chance of screwing up the camera app as only bitrates and quality settings are altered.

A NAND backup isnt needed as the file to be altered has to be backed up by the ToolKit in order to proceed so it can be easily and safely restored if the user wants to.

Does noone bother reading my posts properly lol
If you read my above post the camera quality (stills) is pushed up by pushing the modded settings.
The 2x and medium profiles pushes the 3 quality values of stills upto 100, 85 and 75 (instead of 95, 80, 70). The high quality profile pushes all 3 values upto 100 (meaning there is no compression in the images taken).

[APP][ROOT][BETA] ButtonLED

New thread with updated ButtonLED.
Everything below this point is outdated.
Hey guys,
I've been fiddling around Tasker for the last few weeks and finally decided to create a fully functional app using it.
At this point, some of you will be thinking "Another useless, ugly, cluttered Tasker created app that does something nobody needs".
Well, then, I'll try to prove you wrong
Note: You do not need Tasker to use the app.
App Description:
ButtonLED is similar to NoLED: it allows you to have LED like notifications without actually having the LED light. However, NoLED uses uses your screen; ButtonLED only uses the hardware buttons' backlight (your screen stays off). It's customizable to an extent, with more to come depending on feedback and suggestions.
Features:
Pause for some user defined time on proximity (e.g. if phone is turned down, or is in your pocket);
Turn button backlight for X seconds, then off for Y seconds;
Should work on all devices since the user can locate the brightness file;
Notification exceptions (e.g. to ignore all notification that contain "Hello", add *Hello* to the exception list)
Logs
Compatibility:
It should work on all rooted devices. It will work out of the box (once you open it) for Samsung Galaxy Ace i devices (Galaxy Ace users will probably need to locate the brightness file), which is why I'm choosing to offer it for testing here. I'll release it in the Android Apps and Games section if the reviews are favorable. If not, I'll take their content into consideration and improve it before release it there.
Running the app:
Install, open, enable in accessibility. Done. You may need to select a different brightness file.
You may also want to customize the options.
On the Galaxy Ace i, the brightness file is located at:
/sys/devices/platform/bcm21553-leds/leds/button-backlight/brightness

Changelog:
V1.1 (24/10/12):
Missed call/Unread text notifications support. (can someone confirm ButtonLED v1.0 doesn't detect them? I'm almost certain it won't do anything for missed called/unread texts, but I'd rather be certain about it)
Optional permanent notification.
Option to use flashlight instead of the hard buttons' LED light.
Test button that will turn on and off the LED/flashlight.
Other minor modifications and fixes.

Added in v1.1, will release it later.
Would you like to use both (button + flashlight) or just one at the same time? In v1.1, you can only use one at a time, but I could change that.

I'm not sure. It might be because it's not compatible with JB. Didn't think this would be an issue first, since our devices only support GB. Forgot about the regular Ace's custom ROMs.
I'll release a JB apk later, and hope it works.

Other than that, just wait for a notification (e.g. WhatsApp) while your screen is off.

Should be fixed in v1.1. Actually, it shouldn't be happening in v1.0 since I've already included a quick check that resets the brightness to 0, but I altered a few things in v1.1 that should make it fail proof.
@Qeemi/Toscanitex Thank you guys
Changelog of the upcoming v1.1 version:
Missed call/Unread text notifications support. (can someone confirm ButtonLED v1.0 doesn't detect them? I'm almost certain it won't do anything for missed called/unread texts, but I'd rather be certain about it)
Optional permanent notification.

I'll upload it as soon as I can, probably in the next 24 hours.
Keep the comments coming!
Also, if you think it's read to be released in the general Android Apps and Games section, please say so.
I'll get much more reviews, bug reports and suggestions there which will allow faster development if time allows it, but I don't want to release something unfinished there.
Good luck!

No idea why that's happening, sorry. It could be an issue with your ROM, you might want to check logcats if you want.

About the camera LED, just to make sure:
Open ButtonLED;
Select "Use flashlight ...";
Press the "✓" button;
Select "Test ButtonLED". Your flashlight should turn on and off.
If it doesn't work, and if you have Tasker (or if you can install the trial version), can you try creating a simple task that will turn the "Torch" on then off? Just to make sure that Tasker feature is compatible with your phone (the documentation says it's not compatible with all phones).
Regarding the battery, I don't see why that would happen, unless you left your phone with ButtonLED active for those five hours (when I say active, I mean turning your LED on and off), especially that nothing, battery wise, has changed from v1.0 to v1.1.
Did you flash a new ROM lately? If so, try recalibrating your battery.
For the logs, what exactly do you mean when you say they don't work?
Are they inaccurate? In that case, I fixed it in v1.2. It was a slight issue causing skipped notifications to be displayed as "processed" in the logs (e.g. if your screen is on, ButtonLED will skip a notification; v1.1 will mark it as processed in the logs, tho).
If it's something else (e.g. logs not showing up, some other issue), please specify.
Thanks for the reports

I just remembered that pushing the app using adb should give you more information about why the installation failed, so please try that.
Hi, I found this app on Tasker groups (thanks to the author)
However on my device (galaxy s2 with cyanogen10) I have no /sys/devices/platform/*-leds/leds/ and on tasker Set Light says it's not available on my device...
It's a ROM problem I suppose, because keys backlight are present (as hardware) and supported by the ROM (they turn on and there is an option to use or not use them!). Should I ask to cyanogen developers?
again thanks

Yeah, it's probably hidden somewhere else.
Did some googling and found that for the One X (running CM10), it's /sys/devices/platform/msm_ssbi.0/pm8921-core/pm8xxx-led/leds/button-backlight/currents
Other users say that /sys/class/leds/button-backlight/brightness works instead.
So you could also try looking for something similar.

I get you man! It almost drove crazy! and yes the sounds in question are located in /system/media/audio/ui/
I change 2 files : S_HW_Touch.ogg and TW_Touch.ogg with 2 files I picked from AOSP 4.2, set the permissions correctly and reboot ... voila , no more water-drops .
For the dialer you need to rename/remove/or replace Dialer_new.ogg in the same directory.

I would love to know how to do it as well. The key tones on the dialer are very important to have certain sound, for some visually impaired people using this phone it really helps to listen to the key sound when pressing numbers to confirm right number has been pressed. Anybody at Samsung reads this forum? Can you please put back regular telephone dial sounds? What was wrong with the sound? This device is a telephone, right? If anybody can help me I would donate him. Thanx.

Since changing the other sounds worked for me, I assumed it would be the same for the dialer. I was wrong, I apologize.
No one? Come guys (and girls?)...I changed all 3 .ogg files as well, but unfortunately the Dialer sound is still the terrible water sound...although I can't find a SINGLE file on my phone anymore which IS that sound...so where does the phone find that sound/file????? Aaaaaaaaaaaarghhhhh!!!
This is spooky...or is it an encrypted file just to tease us?
Thanks,

Can someone post the alternative files please? ?
thanks to Androssama for the files.
the files are here for the needy.
btw, the dialer sound is not annoying as it is a bit different now that the other sounds are changed to better ones.
you have to change the mount from R/O to R/W in the root explorer. & make a backup of the old files just in case. then copy paste the new files overwriting the old ones. change back the permission from R/W to R/O, reboot & enjoy.

Now after unzipping the apk the ogg file is there, it should be the one as it sounds like the dialer. I tried all the stupid tricks I know (replacing it with another file and zipping back the whole thing, renaming it to apk since apk files are just fancy zips => didn't work. Tried embedding it in a flashable vrtheme zip file since those decompile, mod and recompile the apk => didn't work.) I don't know how to properly decompile an apk and since everyone is using a different ROM it'll be difficult to post requests.
I've been able to change the touch sounds from water drop to click which was pretty straight forward however the keypad dialler 'spelling"
was located in a different place than otherwise noted on the forum.
The dialler touch sounds were located in a different place than the touch wiz sounds. and it was one file not broken down into 1 2 3 ect.
This is for 4.1.2 i9100.
So I put it into the to hard to do basket and just left it. Sure you can use a app dialler but I like stock.
Wouldn't you think that someone as big as Samsung would allow you to make a simple sound change just by going to settings - sound.
Good luck.

I've been looking all over for this sound file (it's not Dialer_New.ogg in System/Media/Audio/UI)
I would be happy to replace the dialer sound with just a single touch tone sound I already have but can't locate the file.
(EDIT) - nevermind - now I understand the post above indicates that the file is located inside SecContacts.apk
SecContacts.apk\res\raw\touch.ogg
Does anyone know where to find the above file? I searched in Root Explorer from the top level (Root) but didn't find it.
Thanks

Yes. Edit the xml on your PC with something like notepad++ otherwise you'll have issues jf you edit it on the phone. Trust me it'll bork the longpress symbols on the stock keyboard and features will only half activate.

While the CSC hack works for the stock camera, 3rd party cameras like instagram will still have sound. I did the CSC hack for my g/f on her E4GT, and instagram still had sound, so it was pretty annoying for her.
Even though it's overkill, I do both the CSC hack and modify the files just because.

Ah, but I never guaranteed anything for 3rd party apps...and the same may not be true for the E4GT as it is for the S3. For example, I know that if you enable 360 degrees rotation on the E4GT in the framework-res and do the same on the S3, the home screen will not rotate on the S3 while it does on its predecessor. So I wouldn't necessarily correlate it not working on the E4GT to it not working on the S3 unless you're tried it yourself. Personally, I have no need for 3rd party apps that use camera so I simply enable the toggle.

Stock keyboard all the secondary symbols for long press vanish from the main keyboard, still work if you press the sym key. And certain features either don't fully enable or disable depending on which you're doing. For example the messaging options will enable but are greyed out when edited on the phone but work fine when edited via PC. For some reason CSC files don't like being edited on the phone.

Once you push it back you'll need to reboot as well. Usually if I break something using feature I restore the original then reboot, then push back a modified version and reboot again. You need to use the unmodified one to fix the crap that breaks when editing on the phone before trying to remodify it.

I know you didn't guarantee anything for 3rd party apps. That's mainly why I put in my 2 cents, because I have used the toggle by itself and it doesn't work on third party apps (tried it on both the E4GT and the GS3).
I know it's all personal preference, but I'm just stating to the OP what each method implies. If he's satisfied with using the CSC hack, all the better for him since it's all one, easy step instead of modifying a bunch of files. :good:

I know you didn't guarantee anything for 3rd party apps. That's mainly why I put in my 2 cents, because I have used the toggle by itself and it doesn't work on third party apps (tried it on both the E4GT and the GS3).

I know, and I'm just saying that because it doesn't work on the E4GT in all scenarios, doesn't mean that it won't work on the S3 in all scenarios
You also have to change the forced shutter sound from 1 to 0 in build.prop for the toggle to fully function properly.

I like to break stuff!

[TUT] Permanently enable google hangous video calls over 3g/4g/lte

If you going to attempt install it, make phone backup in recovery first.
Your phone must be rooted!
This hack will permanently enable google hangouts video chat over non-wifi networks.
Basically it's the same as all other tutorials with modifying gtalk_vc_wifi_only entry in gservices.db except it enables it permanently.
Enable Video Chat over 3G/4G (GTalkEnabler) works only temporary.
Method 1 - automatic
Install attached modified GTalkEnabler
Method 2 - manual
You'll need SQLite Editor (or any other tool that can edit .db files)
1. open /data/data/com.google.android.gsf/databases/gservices.db (in SQLite it shows as Google Services Framework)
2. go to overrides (all other tutorials tell you to go to main section, but doing so only works temporary)
3. find gtalk_vc_wifi_only and change value to false. If there is none, then add a new entry
4. save changes and reboot

[EDIT]
I've modified original GTalkEnabler (see attachment) so it does the needed changes above and also added options to reboot phone or restart hangouts that doesn't require reboot (hopefully it won't break anything, if you going to try it, make sure you make backup in recovery)

Really? Bootloop after adding an entry into database? - this something new.
It works on CleanROM 4.9 and I find hard to believe that by adding an antry for hangouts in database would make a boot loop.
It must be something you did wrong.

O.k.. I don't need it so won't be trying it again. Been doing this too long to enter in something wrong!
I try stuff so I can let other people know about it. By the way I do have 2 GN2 so I can test on ONE, and the other stays working perfect! Not trying to rain on your thread but was just posting what just happened to ME!!:banghead:
Just my 2¢®
Edit:I entered everything exactly as you did in the pic, FYI!

Wow I'd never guess it could possibly do that...
Can you try changing this entry in main section instead of override ?

That's . But not trying it AGAIN!
Had to set back up my phone, after that MOD. So I'll just do without!
And thanx for the confirmation it works. But did you actually make a video call without Wi-Fi? That's the QUESTION!

I downloaded some app from the playstore called gtalkvideoenabler (or something similar) that does basically that. This is on gtalk and not hangout, so I dunno if it still applies.

That app modifies entry inside "main" section of that database, so it basically only a temporary solution. After you turn on/off wifi several times you have to use that app again to re-enable it and reboot the phone. Very inconvenient.
Also, worth mention, this restriction doesn't exist on T-Mob network, it's damn ATT blocking it, or making google block it (just tested T-Mob GS3 on with ATT sim and it didn't work, so it's not the phone related restriction).
This worked great for me on the latest Beanstalk.
Works great on rooted stock, 4g and wifi.

But it's safer, you don't need to download any sql editor, and the last time i restarted my phone was probably a few months back. Hardly an inconvenient since my phone is not some laggy POS where I have to restart daily.
thanks OP! worked like a charm for me running miscom's intl rom for att

True, it is safer, but I disagree about "hardly an inconvenient". See, if you use hangouts a lot it is very unpredictable when it allows you use data connection and when it doesn't. And if you turn on/off wifi several times a day, you'd be restarting your phone several time a day to enable video chat via data connection - IMHO this is beyond inconvenience.
Personally I use hangouts because I don't have to worry about installing/starting other apps (skype), it's already there weather I want it or not and doesn't waste much resources if any. (skype for example uses 0.18% CPU about every other second by just sitting on a background)
Fortunately for us, that app is open source, perhaps someone could figure out how to change it?
No bootloop on CR5.0, although haven't reached anybody successfully yet, nobody online. Hangouts is making call thou where before it would tell me only wifi possible.
I've attached a modified version of GTalkEnabler to the original post, hopefully it will work for these who got bootloops.

make sure you allow root access for the app (I'm getting same message when trying run this app on an emulator without root.
