HTC J Butterfly anyone? - Galaxy Note II Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Anyone tempted by htc recently announced phone.
Specs look fantastic. 1080p screen wow and ext sd card returns, good move.
Seen few YouTube videos and I'm really considering getting this. inmho its far superior then note 2 due its design, hardware, software, screen resolution specs. Of course you don't get s pen but I rather have superior hardware, software and screen then s pen.
What do you think guys?
I'm going to annoy plenty of people here by saying this but don't you feel cheated Samsung use plastic material crap on the back and sides. Note front looks good but htc J butterfly looks fantastic even better then iphone 5.

It does look good. The hardware is really impressive but I was a little concerned about the battery. 2020mAh is less than the GS3. I'm still gonna get the note though. If the J Butterfly makes its way to the UK with an (easily) unlocked bootloader and some custom ROMs then I MAY switch but I doubt it.
Good to see HTC back on the right track though.

Absolutely, glad htc are doing something right.
If you're happy with s2 then you will love note 2. It's the only one phone I've not rooted because it works just fine as it is. No lag, crashing etc so really impressed everything works as it should.

no stylus.
for me that is enough of a reason not to get it.
I reach for my stylus all the time on my note 2.
some games even feel weird when I play them on my tablet now.

I'd need a few things for me to want to buy it:
Large battery that's replacable.
LED notification light.
2 GB of RAM because 1 isn't enough, and I know because I've had the Note and the S2, and it shows.
If it has those 3 things, then I'll think about it. Any one of them and I'm not going to even think about it.

Nope the screen is smaller that's why I have the note series because of the screen size. I have also found when htc and Motorola make phones with high spec the battery tends to never hold up well

I already ordered the note 2, but competition is ALWAYS good.

Will stick with my note. Its just perfect.

Good points.
S2 lacks a notification light which is annoying to say the least.
Can't comment on the RAM yet cos I haven't used a phone with more than a gig yet.
Large battery is essential. Can live without a user replaceable one but I haven't seen a modern phone with a battery large enough to satisfy me. (Remember how long your old Nokia 3310/3410 used to last?).
Actually using an extended battery in my S2 now. This thin device trend is coming at the cost of bigger batteries... Not worth it at all if you ask me.
One thing I would add to that list is an SD card slot. No slot, no sale. Ridiculous thing to omit imho.

I come from a long line of HTC phones. They are all good but Note 2 is the only one i've used that i need not worry about it dying on me before my work is done. My One X battery last me on a working day, at most 6 hours. The Note 2 has left me impressed with over 15 hours.
Unless you don't mind flashing custom ROM to your HTC, official updates take ages so reach. That being said, i'll probably get the red HTC J for my wife

Im here in the US my biggest concern are the Radios (modems). I have had both Samsung and HTC phones. We are in 4g here I had a Galaxy Nexus and I curently have a S3. The modems on the Nexus were horible The S3 is a lot better but not as good as both my old Thunderbolt and the Rezound. HTC's radios are right up there with Moto who IMO have the best. The S3 picks up 4G most times when its strong but cant seem to hold on to it. I love the screen on the S3 but lets face it 5"s not that much bigger than 4.8"..5.5" on the other hand is huge just what my old eyes need. So what to do smaller screen or not so good Modems? Maybe Sammy made them better but I dont think so I dnt think that is one of there main concerns.

I think the only thing missing is replaceable battery.
I've had to return my note 2 grey due to gap between bezel and screen so I might just wait for butterfly before I purchase again! I've had 2 with the same issue.

Pros and Cons

Hello everyone, I recently started a new job and I get a discount with Verizon so thinking about jumping ship from Sprint and the HTC Evo 3d. I was just wondering if anyone could please post a few pros and cons about their experience with the Galaxy Nexus. I am having a very hard time deciding between the RAZR and Nexus galaxy.
Thank you all for your help.
Hello.
Hey, I've bought the device, and I'm still considering taking it back, but i feel that I should give it at least a week of use to decide.
Pro's: Obviously Android 4.0, front facing camera to be used for G+ or skype, 32gb memory, slick design, Google Wallet is really cool, face unlock is great at first, but i've grown tired of it for the most part. Camera Shutter speed is amazing. The charger cable that comes with the phone is long enough to use instead of the 2 foot long junker you've gotten with every other droid out there. The battery life on mine despite what others are saying is great. Today I had over 23 hours of use before it died. I live in only 3g area though.
Con's: These are IMO, The phone is very slick to hold. I hate cases, but honestly without one, your going to drop it, The camera quality on the phone is trash.. It can be acceptable, but for the most part it sucks and is the main reason I'm considering taking it back. The signal strength seems to be off on my phone, but i haven't noticed a difference in call quality, so i'm not sure what the deal is there. I did notice that my phone gets very hot at times. Very annoying when you are talking on the phone. The speaker on the phone is fairly quiet. If you have used an OG droid, this phone will be a major let down in that department.
I hope some of this stuff helps. bottom line is that the phone is great, like all great things, there will be bugs to be worked out.
thank you. I'm leaning toward this because I'm afraid there won't be enough development for the razr. Do you have an opinion on this? Also what phone are you considering in its place?

I don't know much about the Razr but a few things about it turn me off right away. First off, I've heard the display is very similar to the Atrix. The Atrix was my second favourite phone (next to the Galaxy Nexus) and I probably would still have it if not for that awful screen. I was VERY hesitant to invest in the Nexus because of its pentile display. Turns out it's the most beautiful display I've ever used, and I've had a fair number of Android phones (Legend, Galaxy S, Atrix, Sensation, Optimus 3D, Evo 3D, Galaxy S2 Skyrocket... I need a better hobby...). The other thing I hate about the Razr is the non removable battery. I like having a spare battery kicking around in case I burn through a charge before I have a chance to top up. I have been looking at portable battery chargers and may still buy one. The last thing I don't like about the Razr is the lack of development. The Atrix took awhile to get a good development crowd going but it still pales in comparison to the amount of development the Nexus will have. If you're someone who likes dicking around with their phone (like me) then the Nexus is the obvious choice.
I don't really have any major gripes with the Nexus. The two biggest ones are the picture quality, which I'm sure will be addressed in future updates/mods from the XDA community, and the lack of a micro sd card slot. I can't believe Google didn't tell Samsung to get their sh*t together and include an expandable memory slot, but I guess Samsung will put that in their next flagship device and call it an "added" feature.
Having never owned the Razr it's easy for me to say get a Nexus. I'm sure the Razr is a great phone, but the few obvious shortcomings (in my eyes anyways) would steer me right clear of it. Good luck and let us know what you end up doing!

Yes, me too. Batteries wear out/get weak over time and need to be replaced. How do you replace the battery in the Razr? Almost makes me thing the Bionic is a better phone if you want to stick with Motorola.
Come on now the camera isn't even bad. It's just not up to par with phones like the Rezound. You can't just whip out the camera and immediately snap a pic and hope it has amazing quality.. no camera works like that. That being said, the hump on the bottom of the phone CAN be a little annoying but that can be remedied if you have the extended battery. It makes the phone flush with the hump. Battery life can always be improved after rooting and messing with kernels and undervolting. The speaker which is low (comparable to Droid X's) can also be tweaked louder with the app Volume+ . Everything people dislike about the phone can basically be tweaked or fixed, and that's one of the reasons I love it so much.

Please may I have your honest opinions?

Ok here's the deal, I have one of the rare, flawless h1x phones (aside from overheating and average battery life) and I am contemplating sending it back to amazon as I have one day to make my mind up. If I send it back I will get my full refund for 489.99 and I will buy the galaxy s3, and if I realise that I prefer the h1x I will return the s3 and be able to buy the h1x again for the lowered 449.99 price.
What do you guys think? I would seriously appreciate all of your opinions, many thanks!

I would possibly send it back, get the full refund and wait till may the 3rd for the S3 and then compare them.

You sound as if you want the SGS3, go ahead
I won't be getting the SGS3 this time round, as I love the HOX and it will only get better SW side.
The build, the looks, sense, the screen etc are all good. I'll take SLCD2 over AMOLED now as my previous SGS2 10 months down the line started getting noticeable screen burn.
I'll most likely skip the SGS3 and wait for the Note 2 as that is Samsung's top line now. Sure the SGS3 will be good but the One X is a big improvement compared to HTC's past devices. It's gorgeous! Maybe if maybe the SGS3 has Wolfson I may get it as I don't like carrying multiple devices, I carry my SGS purely for music.

Just read up SAMOLED, sure the SGS3 will be using the super duper amoled with HD plus or whatever they will call it.
Not all are prone to screen burn, but I've got an SGS which has screen burn, and my SGS2 started having screen burn on the notification area 10 months down the line, you have to use dark backgrounds most of the times and not use it for extended amounts of time.
Samsung use the S variant as in Super, one of the major knock backs compared to SLCD I think is the viewing of display in bright sunny conditions, sometimes it can be hard to see where as it's not that bad on LCD.
Both are good, both have advantages and disadvantages. Sure the screen on the SGS3 will be lovely as well.
Note 2, who knows it may get an announcement on May 3rd but we won't know until the actual day.
If you run benchmark test, I think SG3 sure will be better than H1X, but whether you like AMOLED or not is a matter of taste, I personally feel that the color just too sharp. Also, many ppl complaint about screen burns and the color temperature is 'cool'.
After OTA update, H1x runs just better and most reported problems were gone.
Talking about battery life, I don't think SG3 can lives significantly better.
Furthermore, you may in risk of getting SG3 which run into more problems then HTC (quad-core, ics, etc....all are new stuffs)!
If you return your phone now and wait for SG3 or H1X (again), you need to suffer from the period without a smartphone to use! If it is okay, then just return it first.
It's a tough call. I'm sure the Galaxy S3 will be a fantastic phone. It will be interesting to see whether or not Samsung uses more premium materials than they did in the GS2, which was built substantially better than the original Galaxy S. I'd be willing to bet the GS3 will be quicker out of the box than the HOX. I also think battery life will be better on the SGS3 than on the One X, based solely on Samsung's reputation of building devices with relatively good battery life. The battery life on my Galaxy Note was the best I'd ever had on an Android phone. I really like the camera on the HOX, but I'm sure the camera on the SGS3 will be just as good.
As far as the screen goes, like a number of people have said, it's really a matter of taste. I really like the screen on the One X. I think it looks very sharp and colour reproduction is spot on. I had a Galaxy Note before I bought this phone, and while the screen on the Note was fantastic, blacks, especially while watching video, were quite blocky.
Realistically, the One X and SGS3 are top of the line phones, and they'll both be about as good as you can get right now. You can't go wrong with either.
Keep it, use it, be happy

My honest opinion?Back in my country there is a saying : "Don't reach to much or you will burn yourself".I think that is what you are doing. You are trying to get the....best phone so to speak, but you have to realize that there will be verry few differences between this two phones. One will be the display and the second will be the battery. As far as the display goes i think that H1X will be better because i've seen SII and Note,i've played with them, but honestly,i'm not so thrilled about those AMOLED displays. If it's sunny outside (especialy in the summer) you can't see anything.I don't know if that is a display issue or the glass itself, but overall,i don't like them.I had a SII (of my wife) for a few days and i have to say that the screen was at max brightness and still i couldn't see anything.Maybe the SIII will bring some improvements to it,but i doubt it will be better than the H1X.As for the battery,i don't know what to tell you because there are many options you can do to improve the battery live.I mean, there are a lot of custom ROMs out there which have improved the battery life. You have to realize that HTC will bring up in the future some improvements to battery life trough different updates.Even today i've noticed an improvement of the battery live after updating to 1.28.Before the update i had to charge my phone every night because the battery was at 20-25%.Today i got home and i had 73% left of the battery and i still played games, browse web, installed some apps on it and after another 2 hours of "playtime" with the phone the battery is at 67% (now it's at 64%).
And i bet that H1X has something better that SIII won't have: the Tegra 3 chip which gives you great graphics.
Besides,if you think a bit, even the SIII will have problems. There is no perfect phone out there, everytime there will be bugs and glitches, you just have to wait for the company to release an update to resolve them. There could be problems with the UI of the SIII,or it could be other problems, who knows? But you have to expect to have problems with that phone as well.Don't consider the SIII the perfect phone.

Reviewed - So, the Galaxy S 3 IS better, but are you keeping your X?

Hi.
GSMArena have just published a 1v1 review of the Galaxy S 3 and HTC One X. I can't link to it unfortunately but go and have a read.
As expected, the Galaxy S 3 does just about win in every key area, however it's marginal most of the time.
Unfortunately marginal victories don't convince me as the S 3 just looks (and apparently feels) awful.
How about you?
Not a huge difference to the average user.
Thus, I will go for looks over performance when performance is of a negligible difference.

Quite.
The amount of times I'll enjoy the feel and design of my device will dwarf the amount of times I'll care if the camera is a tiny bit better or if a web page loads 000.1 second faster.
Samsung would be on to a real winner if they actually got some good designers in though. Strange.

No way I'll get rid of my One X! Maybe I might (a very HUGE might) get the SGS3 because I think I have OCD lol. But not gonna replace my One X. The One X looks better I reckon. Just my 2 cents.
But is it better, really? It's a very personal opinion as both devices are super powerful and also very similar. However, I take IPS over amoled every day of the week, so for me the choice is easy, and on top of that the HOX just looks so much better. The two only upsides of s3 are sd-card and bigger battery. How much more battery time it has is to be seen.
Edit: If S3 had an A15 cpu instead, then the choice would've been harder. But I would've probably kept my hox till the next flagship was to be released, of any brand.
PenTile, PenTile, PenTile. I was waiting for the new Galaxy to be announced before making my decision on which handset to get. I love the amazing specs/performance on the GS3 and even though the handset itself is ugly and typical plasticky Samsung... I could have lived with that for the other perks, like bigger, removeable battery and expandable storage. Software doesn't matter since it wouldn't be staying stock for very long anyway. But a cheap PenTile matrix display is an absolute dealbreaker for me.
I know all the previews and hands-ons of the GS3 say it doesn't make any difference at that resolution... but it DOES. At least for me it does. Maybe these reviewers just don't notice it or aren't bothered by it, but experience tells me if I get a handset with a PenTile display, I will cringe every time I look at it. I hated it on my Desire, I hate it on my N9 (though thankfully I didn't buy that handset for everyday use) and I hate it on my colleague's Galaxy Nexus (which has a similar resolution to the GS3).
So, after seeing that... HOX it is for me.

The pentile they're using isn't bad at all.
I knew the SIII would have an overall edge over the One X seeing as it was coming to market after it, thinking otherwise would have just been plain stupid but I've never really liked the Samsung UI style and I'm not too keen on the look of the phone.
I don't think there's enough of a difference between the two phones to make me switch, plus the One X in my opinion looks way nicer and I'm fickle when it comes to looks
I'm definitely disappointed in the photo and video quality though. Samsung videos definitely look better.
Also, all the talk about the Pentile screen and excuses such as "making a Super AMOLED Plus HD screen just isnt possible" but then this phone comes along with a better screen than the "Flagship" SIII. Looks like maybe Samsung want to ditch Android for their own OS? Its a developer phone but it still has a better screen than the SIII!!!

Everyone said that about about the GNex as well and I was THIS close to buying one when it was released, but positive reports from third parties don't match what my eyes see when I look at my colleague's Nexus.
I'm not saying it's going to be a big deal for everyone. I imagine whether or not it's a problem comes down to the individual looking at the screen. But having seen a GNex in person (with a similar display) and used PenTile in the past... no dice
Here's the real competition:

The pentile really isn't that bad, yea some edges look a bit more jagged, but you have to put the thing right up in your face. At such high resolutions on both phones, half an arms length away from your face and they will look nearly the same.
The biggest thing for me is the removable battery and the battery performance.
Damn, it even won in 3G talk time.......wtf? I thought the companion core was used for the talk time which is why it got such high scores. But the GS3 still managed to beat it out.
I put everything down to bad optimization on HTC and Nvidia's part. How the hell are you going to lose in web browser to SAMOLED? SAMOLED eats battery like no other on all white colors, and the video playback is horrendous. Companion core should be used for video playback and that Nvidia prism technology crap which is supposed to increase battery life by like idk whatever they said 100%? I don't remember.
Either way, it's a case of HTC Sense and software being un-optimized and not mature vs Samsung software being what it does best. It works and does it efficiently producing good results.
I'm still keeping my One X though, design and build it wins hands down IMO. GS3 isn't a big upgrade either over HOX. Software just sucks and needs to be better, too immature when ICS has been out for like half a year already.

I don't think HTC and Samsung might've done enough.
Granted, that LG phone is going to come pretty late.....Quad-core Krait are pretty far off from the roadmap and the upcoming Sony flagship with Krait Pro (should come earlier) will give Tegra 3 and Exynos 4 a run for their money. Design and camera should be very nice also.
Sony really looks to be getting on track now, especially considering how far they've fallen in every sector besides Playstation.

Hmm, not really. The closing of the article summed it up best...
"Anyway, back to where we started. Two superphones, one Android crown. The HTC One X managed to come to the market first, while the Galaxy S III is a little late, but has plenty to show for it. We're tempted to play it safe and split it equal. The HTC One X: this is what a droid flagship should look like. The Samsung Galaxy S III: that's what a droid flagship should perform like. But that won't be fair to either of them. They didn't get where they are by playing it safe.
It seems obvious that the Samsung Galaxy S III wouldn't have raised as the new standard-setter without a powerful challenger like the One X. There's no consolation prize here, no second-best. A fair fight and a win-win for Android."
Some other things that struck me as relevant...
"The HTC One X is encased in a polycarbonate unibody (Gray or Black), which is matte in appearance and pleasant to the touch. The Samsung Galaxy S III is covered in glossy plastic (with Blue brushed metal look or pure white), which is durable, but not quite as nice to hold. We're not impressed by its looks either.
"On the other hand, Samsung's design allows you to change the battery allowig you to use a spare one to extend battery life or replace an old burnt-out battery with a fresh new one. Oh, and there's a microSD card slot too. Not that HTC couldn't have put a card slot into the One X, they just decided that 32GB should be enough for everyone (and it probably is)."
"Of course, not all of them are deciders. The S-Voice is a direct take on Siri, but it really fails to live up to expectations, while the NFC-based media sharing over S Beam has limited application for now. Pop-up play will rarely be used while Buddy photo share borders on useless."
So what does it come down to? Personal preference.
1) Is a removable battery and SD card slot important? Buy the SGS3.
2) Is design, construction, and feel in the hand important? Buy the One X.
3) Is low light picture and video important? Buy the One X.
4) Are more detailed pictures in bright light important? Buy the SGS3.
5) Do you like the vivid (I'm being kind) colors of AMOLED? Buy the SGS3.
6) Do you like a brighter, non-PenTile display, with more accurate color and better detailing? Buy the One X.
7) Want a better browsing experience and more audio and video codec support? Buy the SGS3.
8) Are you an avid gamer that'll be pushing the CPU and GPU regularly? Buy the SGS3.
9) Do you like TouchWiz? Buy the SGS3.
10) Do you like Sense? Buy the One X.
11) Do you listen to lossless audio over $300+ headphones or a home system that cost several thousand dollars? Pick the SGS3.
There's other differences that may matter to people but those are the main ones. I knew the SGS3 would benchmark better than the One X when I bought it. The reality is, as it stands today, the power of Teg3, S4, and Exynos-Quad are wasted because the OS and apps aren't able to tap their power. Other than bragging rights you'd be hard pressed to tell them apart performance wise; they'll "feel" the same.
My views on the main features...
1) I like the LCD2 display on the One X. After using AMOLED for a year the realistic colors, the lighter look because black backgrounds aren't used to save battery, and increased display brightness are all nice for a change.
2) The One X camera h/w is better than the SGS3's. It shows in low light settings. I'm hoping s/w tuning in future updates makes it a better all-around performer. I wouldn't ditch the One X over the camera as they don't strike me as that dramatically different from each other.
3) Audiophiles probably never considered the One X once it was announced that the SGS3 has a Wolfson DAC. An audiophile would cut off their arm before listening to compressed formats like MP3's or on anything less than high grade equipment. That makes 95% of us “non-audiophiles.” And a real audiophile would question the use of something like a smartphone as an audio output device anyway.
4) Did anyone who bought the One X not know in advance it had fixed storage and a non-replaceable battery? I'd like those features; I think anyone would. But I really like the design of the One X and if it had to look like the SGS3 in order to have them I'd pass.
5) Other than the graphics issues which are big, the One X's launch has been pretty typical from a QC perspective. I'll bet anyone here the SGS3 launch looks the same (sans graphics issues) and that display consistency will be one of the biggest *****es on their forum. The SGS2 and GN launches were far from great.
So, the short answer to OP's question, nothing in that review has changed my opinion of the One X. Look at it this way, the SGS2 crushed the Sensation. In less than a year HTC launched a phone that made GSMArena consider splitting the win. That alone is pretty impressive. Of course, YMMV and I clearly don’t expect everyone to agree with some of my comments.

I personally agree with everything you said SD cards aren't a problem for me though, 16gb currently and only half filled - that's with a few shows/music and stuff my only worry about the One X is the price of replacing the battery - my brother might want it after my contract finish and the battery will have degraded a bit by then.

The O2X/G2X were probably the worst phones every to be released by a manufacturer. The G2X is the subject of a class action lawsuit in the U.S. because of its putrid performance and sales were halted for three months while LG tried to figure out its problems. After owning one I'll never buy an LG product again. Not even a toaster. "Deadly" is a great choice of words; that's how previous O2X/G2X owners would describe their experiences.
Why is anyone surprised? Samsung is known for having better specs, better optimized software. HTC one x got the looks, SGS3 got the power.
I have let go galaxy note for one x, there is no way I want to go back to samsung

If they were women (or men), which one would you want to date? The pretty voluptuous one or the one with child bearing hips?
My OneX will be on eBay once the S3 is available. Main negatives of the OneX for me - no S-Off, poor battery life, cannot remove battery, no ext SD. I use Android phones mainly to try custom ROMs.
Gosh! Yet another boring, unproductive topic by thread stsrter of just 4 posts...!
It's all depends on one's preference and priority for god's sake!

Anyone switched from an HTC One Xl?

I'm wondering if any of you got a Galaxy note 2 after owning a At&t HOX and was hoping you could tell me the battery life, performance, camera and if you have anything you like about the HOX over the Note 2.
I played on one at the At&t store (The S-pen was great!) but IMO nothing beats hearing other people's experience when they've had it for a while.
Thanks and sorry if this is in the wrong forum.

Yep...I came from the att One X and could not be happier. I originally ordered the Nexus 4, but that was backordered so I canceled and went with the Note 2. After looking at the Nexus 4 forums, I feel I dodged a bullet as that phone would have been a rather large step backwards from the One X and in my opinion an even bigger step back from my current Note 2. As far as battery life...I was getting between 4 and 5.5 hrs screen on time with the One X using primarily WiFi during the day. Total time in battery was usually around 14-17 hrs...but I charged every night, so anything more than 12-14 was fine for me. As far as the Note 2, the most screen on time I have got so far is 9.5 hrs with 26 hrs of total time on. There really is no comparison between the two when it comes to battery. The Note 2 really is more in the league of a tablet as far as the battery goes. The ONLY thing I can say was nicer on the One X than my N2 is the whites on the screen...every other color looks better to my eyes on the N2...especially blacks (although blacks looked good on the One X too). Another big advantage of the N2 (besides the battery and s pen) is the sound (both speaker and in call speaker). Both are quite a bit louder on the N2, while still being nice and clear. Even though the PPI on the N2 is lower than the One X, that has not bothered me one bit...as I have yet to see any pixels on the N2...text is as clear to me on this phone as it was on my One X, PLUS I get to see so much more at once
I hope this helped you out a little bit. In would definitely not hesitate to make the jump if I were you. Feel free if you have anymore questions.

Thanks! One more question, do you use a case/screen protector and what would you recommend. I don't like cases but as big as this screen is I'd imagine it'd break easily. Now all I got to do it get the money (which assuming I can sell my tablet shouldn't be to hard)
I just put the Zagg Invisible Shield HD on the front of mine and the xtreme guard on the back. The Zagg is well made, covers right to the edge of the screen and is very smooth, so the s pen works without catching the protector. The xtremeguard on the back is a good/cheap alternative, but it's just too sticky for the s pen...that's why I used it for just the backside. I think the Zagg was like $25 from best buy (front only) and the xtremeguard was $4 (front and back) on eBay.

powerwagon's statements above are consistent with my experience as well. i'm using the GN2 mainly for work and an SGS3 for personal use. based on my hearing, the in-call voice quality and loudness of the Samsungs is noticeably better compared to the HOXL. (Samsung even has a button on the call screen that allows you to boost in-call volume if necessary). it's a bit unfair to compare the performance of the HOXL's 1800 mAh battery to the GN2's (swappable) 3100 mAh monster. nonetheless, i can easily get through a 16-hour workday with battery life to spare, e.g., 30-40% battery left. i'm averaging 4-6 hours screen time, 90 minutes call time, 80-120 emails (for 3 exchange accounts, all set to push), about 30 minutes web surfing and 30-50 texts. i don't have any games on my GN2. i'm using a zagg HD screen protector and an inexpensive 0.3mm TPU-type case to cover my phone. (See pics below)
the biggest adjustment is getting used to the GN2's size; i returned the first GN2 i had because i thought it was too big. i was fortunate enough to have a second chance to use the phone and have not looked back since then.
now, after saying all that, the HOXL is still a good phone and is worthy of keeping as a main/alternate device if desired. i'm debating whether or not to sell mine.
That's a good looking case! Is it hard or just a slip on rubber case?

Came from it. Love my GN2 and sold my One X
hope this helps.
I had a One X. I don't miss it at all for a few reasons. First, it replaced my wife's iPhone 4 (sold that for $200, got AT&T to price match Note for $200, so it was like an exchange), and secondly I was never really happy with it. Either I over excited myself for it, or I am really a Samsung fan boy unconsciously. I had a GS II, got doa replacements, and AT&T wouldn't let me early upgrade until October, but they let me get a One X free. The first thing that happened was a deep scratch within 48 hours with no explination, then a series of dead pixels. I relied on my microSD card more than I thought. The power button bugged me being on top. Then I went to load a custom ROM... Boy was I missing my GS II those 4 hours learning ADB. The CM/AOKP were poor battery life and buggy, and ViperXL still can't multi-task. It ended up being a laundry list of "minor" irks. Nothing big enough on its own.
I forgot about the early upgrade offer until I caught a YouTube video of the Note II's multi view. It was like my life went into slow motion. Within 30 minutes I confirmed I could early upgrade but, could not pre-order. I had to wait until the 9th, then they sent my phone on the slow boat from china and "overnight" turned into a week.
I can tell the screen is less bright when I put the two next to each other. When they are apart I can't discern a difference in the screens. Performance is night and day. I can multi-task again. I popped back in my MicroSD card. I can reach the power button, and unlock my phone easily one handed. The notification LED can be seen at all angles, and is RGB. The power port is on the bottom again, and the right side up. I honestly feel like this phone is more solid. The One X screen had give, it didn't feel like it was in all the way. I laughed at people that said they wanted the Note, way too big I told them. It only took a day or two to get used to, it doesn't feel big anymore. And when I grab the One X it feels so small. An iPhone feels like my toddlers phone, or the phone from Zoolander.
I really like the S-Pen, and use it almost every time I use the phone. The battery life is way better. I was barely getting through a day on a single charge on the One X ~ 3-4 hours screen time. I get 6+ on the Note most days. No need for a charger in the car, or at work anymore. Plus with the stock 2A charger it feels like it charges faster than the One X did.
I don't regret the jump at all, and if I had to go back I would sell the One X for a GS III. I just couldn't go back to Sense or buggy AOSP. I really like the TouchWiz on the GS III and Note II. Its not just the S-Pen stuff, its the stuff that I use constantly like Smart Stay, Smart Alert, etc. I also like using MHL, especially if I can download content to the MicroSD, and skip the computer all together. Every day I find I like the look and feel of the phone more. I have the titanium grey, and love the faux brushed metal. I know its plastic, some say it feels cheap, I say it feels durable. Like the S II that took a serious amount of abuse, naked. The One X looks like its been through a rock tumbler when you get it in direct sunlight.
I am going to go with the official Samsung black TPU case. Its $30 from Samsung, if you register your phone you get a 50% off coupon. I don't mind paying a little more for a case made by the OEM guaranteed to fit, and not interfere with the S-Pen being removed. I have seen people (here on XDA) modify the case and use the flip case too, jury is still out on that for me. The Note will be my first ever non-nude phone. I think the flip case might be too much for me.
</rant>
tl;dr - No regrets, couldn't be happier, performance and battery life are leaps and bounds ahead of the One X.

HTC ONE vs. S4?

Can't decide which one to buy. Storage space and removable batt doesn't matter to me. Coming from Nexus 4 since I need WiFi calling. Any insight would be appreciated. Thanks.
S4. HTC One is not nearly as good hardware wise as the S4. Samsung really did a great job on it. I too was teetering and couldn't decide, seeing since i had the S2, S3, and now the S4 i love the s4
I actually have the One and I find it at times to lag when web browsing. It feels great and looks great and the speakers are nice. The only thing making me want to switch is wireless charging and biigger screen, as definites. Possible reasons, depending if its true, are better camera (low light doesn't matter) and better battery. I have seen conflicting reports about both all over the web so I'm considering those features a draw. Hmmmm... Don't know if I should return the One or not.
S4 much nicer, I had the one its a great phone , just nothing like samsung s4 at all..

S4 is legit. HTC one was a letdown especially with all the reviews and fanaticism.
Can anyone give reasons why they like their S4 over One? Especially people who have used both for a couple of days. I don't care about removable battery or storage.
Check this thread http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2278783
Why did you go S4 over HTC? only a few threads down. And then check all the other threads everywhere else about this. Then make up your mind.

Besides having advantage of removable battery and expandable memory, S4 has a wider range of third party accessories available for customization.
Both fantastic devices. S4 will have better dev support (for multiple reasons) and comes with the latest version of Android. Greater selection of accessories, some useful gesture features, larger battery, higher res camera, and for me a more familiar button layout than the HTC One. Tons of samsung specific software, some gimmicky, others somewhat useful like split screen.
I prefer LCD screens but the AMOLED screen on the S4 is amazing. I will still say the HTC One has the better overall screen by a hair and the front facing speakers are a plus. Some also prefer the all aluminum shell of the HTC One, and I can definitely understand why.
There is no bad choice.
I actually went with the HTC One because for me the S4 may have good hardware but for my personal taste for a 2 year contract I just don't like the Touchwiz UI, to me its really not luring me in to the phone but instead holding me back from buying it. I actually just s-offed my one so flashing is easier now and well overall the aluminum body and front speakers like others are saying were something i felt were pretty cool instead of the Samsung plastic.
Edit: I also found out that the T-mobile and AT&T one's can flash the HTC One(M7) International roms since the hardware is pretty much the same.
I own the S4, Nexus 4 and One. Honestly use the S4 the most, like the camera better than the both one and N4. Better battery life than both, SD card, better accessory support. Don't like amoled, prefer the LCD on one and n4. But overall S4 is the phone I use mostly. As far as software I flash AOSP roms, so same on all of them.
I just sold my HTC One after owning for 2 weeks. Thought I would go crazy over the speakers (the S4 is louder). Thought I would love the camera (S4 is better). So then I thought I would love the feel of the device (digs into the fingures because the sides are too thin.
I also love the mult iview I can use on the S4. That alone is worth it for me to choose the S4. I love true multi tasking.
I just ordered the wireless receiver and pad for my S4 which is another HUGE plus for me. I will have a wireless charging pad on my desk and next to my bed and the convenience is way worth the price. You ever get sick of fumbling around at night to plug it in?

the speakers on the s4 are better than the boom sound on the One? can anyone else verify this?
They are.

most people in this thread will side with the Samsung GS4 because this is in a GS4 forum.
I've gotten both and i regret getting the S4. Overall the S4's screen looks better at room lighting but looks horrible in the sunlight or at night with no lights.
The One has a finished OS compared to the S4, which lags stock very badly and even lags when rooted. Now for the camera, they were about the same for my usage.
Also, the HTC One feels like it would hold up to use and not look bad a lot longer than the S4. I've gotten a crack in my S4's back cover for no apparent reason, scratches everywhere on the sides, chrome surrounding the camera and the speaker.
Overall, if you don't hate Sense, get the HTC One please! just make sure the one you get isn't defective..
Oh btw the S4's speaker is louder than the HTC's in certain sounds, but if you turn off the beats feature, which sucks, it will make the HTC's speakers louder than anything. Also the HTC's speakers produce a lot more refined sound that screams quality.
Haha my friend actually has the HTC One and every time we hang out he goes on about how much better my phone is and how he wishes he had my phone XD
Unfortunetly, I hate HTC Sense, which is why i traded it. But have i waited for the Nexus HTC One, i would of loved it.
I had an HTC One for two weeks. Camera is all hype. Even low light photos taken on the H1 don't look spectacular. Yes, the image is brighter in low light than images produced on the S4 in night mode. However, that doesn't make the photo any more worthwhile. You simply have an extremely grainy 4MP photo. I'd rather not take a low light shot at all with a cellphone.
