Is it possible to run Ubuntu on the Kindle Fire? - Kindle Fire Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi guys,
Ubuntu has been released for the Nexus 7 and the Kindle Fire has similar specs.
Is there a way to port it to it?

I don't know...
maybe...
with some skills

Defiantly possible. If you can run linux on it, then you can run Ubuntu on it! but i dont have any of the skills to even attempt to

Maybe hashcode will help.
Hope he sees this thread *crossfingers*
I hope that all the components are supported (eg wifi)

Yes, I run it on my Kindle and it does pretty good. I've only tried the lightweight version with the assistance of Complete Linux Installer app The wifi works well and using a good version of Firefox is sweet

Naa.I want it natively

[DEV] Port Maemo / MeeGo

http://repo.meego.com/MeeGo/releases/1.0/core/images/meego-n900-open-armv7l/
My idea is to use the current effort to run Ubuntu/Debian on the phone as a method to get MeeGo running on the phone as well (Maemo should be similar). What we'd need to achieve is to get an .img of MeeGo/Maemo as we do Debian/Ubuntu. Driver issues (If present) should be rectifiable by porting over some of the Debian/Ubuntu ARM drivers.

Even if someone is working on it, I don't think it'll be as simple as "Install Meego through update.zip in recovery". However I hope so

[Q] where to find maguro aokp compile tutorial

title says it all,
i want to compile my first rom, and i want to use aokp as the base,
i love its features, i love how snappy it feels with the right kernel and setup
and overall i just want to compile my own customized rom, if it turns out ok then i may release it for the rest of you guys
but ive looked and all i found was a tut on compiling aokp for toro not maguro
so just curious as to where to start
helpful pointers only please
Well wouldn't using the tutorial for toro work for maguro but just use maguro files?
bow chicka wow wow.
There is a sticky in this forum, and yeah, what @rbiter said.
understood, but i dont see clearly how to use maguro files on the toro tutorial,
just looking for some simple answers and something easy to use
maybe im blind :S lol
also, im new entirely to compiling and custom rom cooking and all that fun stuff,
so hence why i had asked how to use maguro files while compiling..
i know its prolly been answered before, and yes im sure there is something out there...
but for me i cannot seem to find a maguro specific tutorial for AOKP
and i really want to make my own rom, but am so confused with all the compiling stuff, and ive never really learned linux, i know basic commands, i know how to follow tut's, but other then that, im lost
thanks again for any help
It is hard finding good tutorials for a lot of stuff. That said, you need to find a few good tutorials of varying things. And you need to be able to figure out "if I can do this with this file can I do it with this file?". And you need to be a man about it. Seriously. You learn more from mistakes and not being able to do what you want rather than a hold me by the hand video or toolkit. And lots and lots of reading and searching. And finding some friendly devs who aren't too busy helps too. If any of these aren't in your game plan you should probably not do this. We don't need another I bricked my phone trying a toro compile on my maguro phone. :banghead:
bow chicka wow wow.
well im not that much of a newb.. but i am to compiling source code stuff...
im used to the days of HTC rom cooking, so simple to just use a kitchen to make the rom, but android sparked a fire in me and now i want to try my hand at a custom rom, the ONLY thing im worried about is bricking the phone,
but as ive seen around on diff forums is that its not impossible to brick, but u HAD to have done something wrong to hard brick the device, and as far as i know, if i follow steps accordingly then i cannot possibly brick the device unless i fudge with things im not suppose to...
but i just basically want a rom, made by me, with all my customizations and settings as a default daily driver...
cuz with all the rom versions and release's coming out, im getting annoyed with having to redo all my settings and launcher setups and stuff...
basically all i want really, is a base rom, that i can update as new versions release, so i dont have to "wipe" the device all the time, just add a new update and go...
Also do you have a Linux or virtual box setup already? Do you have android sdk loaded up? Eclipse? Played with android emulator? Have you tinkered with some little stuff like kernels? Does your computer have enough oomph to compile a rom in a reasonable amount of time? Without overheating? Do you know where and how to pull and look at files? Fastboot commands? Adb commands? And drum roll... do you have extra underwear if you brick your $500 phone? :what:
bow chicka wow wow.
i have ubuntu 11.10 and ubuntu 10.04 setup on my laptop, and i have android sdk and gnex toolkit and various other tools installed on my win7x64 desktop, i also have dabbled in adb and fastboot commands, i have messed with build.prop editing for basic stuff, im a bit familiar with dos commands and linux command line.. i do know how to use adb for push and pull of files, i have a full motodev /w eclipse linux VM on my win desktop, it has everything needed for android dev, but i think its possibly only for moto devices :S not to sure tho
and my pc, i think it has enough balls.. Acer Aspire 8943G 18.4" laptop, core i5-430m 2.26ghz quad core, 8gb ddr-3 ram, 640gb hdd for win7x64, 160gb hdd for ubuntu 11.10/10.04
Got ram?
bow chicka wow wow.

Some help in Dev a Rom

Hi, guys,I want to port a Pac-man rom to our glides, but, my internet is only 512, my pc is very good for the work, but my internet no. 1 Night and only 800 mb. (and i think that there was a error and cut the connection)
My question is. Can I download all the repo (Pac-man gith andour device tree) in another pc using windows, and use that file in my linux OS? I can go to download in another place, but only with windows. If the answer is Yes, where can I learn how to do that?

I don't see why not, unless your repo is OS specific...
I would set up a virtual linux machine and use that to do everything, as it will cause less hiccups. Easier to build on there, or so I'm told...
EDIT: Do you want to work together? I'm trying to port as well. Just a basic port, using this guide:

Wow, your guide seems very easy, and there is an app to do it too.
I will try to see if i can install linux in one of these machines to download all.
I dont know any about porting, or fixing things in android, I want to learn and I am using Dman's Tutorial, so, not sure if I can help doing a real rom

i want to do a pacrom as well.. ive been really busy the last 2 weeks though so havent had a chance to fix my ubuntu install... my build environment is almost done, just gave me errors.. well need to setup a repo on github... for now though its not a bad idea to be patient and allow everyone to focus on fixing the cm that spyke is working on.. thats one thing i wonder about the greatergood .. if he focused on one fully working vs many broken if we'd have a bluetooth fix...
Yes, but in that time, I will learn, I see minor errors when sync the repo, but continue (sometimes the conection broke it but can restart) I first want to learn

ya cool I'm with you ... When I have some free time next I will fix my devel. Let's work on this together im sure we can help eachother out quite a bit and put together an updated how-to compile from source for 4.2.2.
I don't see any reason why you can't download all of the items you need under windows. The only thing you'd need to be concerned when copying it back is file permissions ... shouldn't be an issue, though.
Question, though, what makes you believe it would be faster downloading in windows vs linux ? is your windows computer a laptop that you'll be taking somewhere else to download? ...
Yes, I will go to another place to download all. If I dont do that, I never going to finish

Alternative OS for 1stGen Kindle Fire

I have rooted my Kindle Fire, I installed jellybean, and a few custom ROM's on it. Would it be possible to turn this device into something else (non-android), such as iOS to make it an iPAD or a Windows 8 tablet, Ubuntu, and any other things out there. If it is possible, Would be there an actual benifit?

Hello, sorry to interrupt your thread here, but it has came to my attention you are posting in the wrong section. For the correct section for Questions and Answers , please click here use here for now on : http://forum.xda-developers.com/forumdisplay.php?f=1561 . Thanks and hope you have a great day
And to help you with your question , there is a Ubuntu Touch available for your Kindle : http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2169327&page=1
There is also Real Linux : http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1677085
Real benefit as a daily OS? Not likely, the device was designed around android, that's what works best on it... Anything else would be clumsy and not very useful.
That being said, I do use Linux (Debian 10) on my fire, but not all the time... I only use it for tuning the fuel injection system on my car (MegaSquirt via TunerStudio).
Ubuntu Touch. But this is just a preview that Hashcode ported but it not as a daily OS as CM.

When will there be a new Non-Amazon Custom Rom for the Fire TV Stick 2?

Does anyone know when we'll get a new custom Rom for the Fire TV Stick 2 running Lineage OS? I've looked through their website and found roms for Android TV devices. I know its going to take awhile until the development has finished. If any android developer wants to create a new OS on the Fire TV, this is a good start doing so since the Mediatek exploit is so easy to follow :good:

It's been many years and no one has made one for any of the Fire TV devices. So, probably not any time soon? When the first fire tv box was first rooted and unlocked I worked on it, but never quite got it finished. I don't really see any point, especially because there's quite a few instructions on how to get the play store and friends working on stock software.
@rbox just out of curiosity what is required to do this?. Can you do a basic explanation how the process works eg would require mapping remote control and identifying chipset devices etc. I have no idea.

The same as porting lineage to any device. You have to create a lineage device tree for the device. Figure out all the random settings you need. All the random blobs you need. Figure out how to make the kernel compile with everything lineage needs. And then pray it compiles into a workable image.
