Cell data power consumption - T-Mobile, Samsung Galaxy SIII

Just wondering if anyone knows why when I turn of data especially, my phone can go 24 hours in one charge but leaving data on all the time diminishes the battery life. Is it a modem thing? I always had battery issue but turning off data seems to help a check lot. Thanks in advanced.

Do you often leave the coverage area? Because constantly searching for network when there is none will eat battery. Also If you have data on it will allow background apps to use the internet, which consumes power as well.

You probably are getting a much stronger signal when it isn't trying to stay connected to mobile data.
The weaker your signal the greater the battery drain. Often when you enable data you get a weaker sig.
Also make sure its not set to wcdma only.

I'm in pretty good coverage area.

It is pretty normal for you to have more battery consumption with the data on than off. I had a myTouch 3G slide that could go for 3 days if I left the data off. Check to see if you have any apps that are being synchronized too often because that could be causing your phone to die quicker than normal.

With data off apps can't update(refresh) right? That should keep them from waking the system up.

Try having wifi on when possible if you dont want to disable data.

lol! My slide was/is a beast! Dropped, kicked, slammed, scraped, you name it! Not a scratch on the glass! Cover looks like it was in an explosion!
Still use it for an alarm.

If they are set to sync they will still try. You have to turn off sync. But if they can't get out they still don't transmit so still less battery use.

Yeah that will probably fix the issue. When I was on TW, under the battery tab, I noticed that my phone would wake often during the night. Now with the data off, it stays asleep longer. I think ill have to use something like juice defender that enables and disabled data automatically

Battery Drain problems...please help.

Sometimes, when I go into buildings (like a movie theater or college class room) my phone gets hot and then the battery just drains crazy. I have Sprint Optimizer off and I don't think it is Rom related because it dosen't matter what Rom I use, this happens. My guess would be that it is constantly trying to find a signal or something...if that is the case, what do I do? I shouldn't have to put my phone in airplane mode when I go into a building. Let me know your thoughts or solutions....Thanks!

Do you HAVE signal when this happens? Could it be an app running your CPU and wakelocking you? Is GPS trying to get a fix for something?

I do have signal.....but it is very very slow....I don't know if its a app running...I always keep gps off unless I need to use it. Next time it happens, is there something you recommend that I do to help find out what is causing the problem?

You can use CPU Spy to see if your phone is staying awake or sleeping. Also, Better Battery Stats will allow you to check for specific wakelocks.

To the OP, if you use these make sure you un install them when you're done with them. They reduce your battery life because I think they make wakelocks of their own.

For me, battery drain and excessive heat remind me of one thing - heavy data use. This happens to me when my drop box is automatically uploading my gallery, while signal is bad.
If this were happening to me I'd be looking for apps that are auto syncing or auto uploading data and change the settings.

Does Juice defender work?

Do apps like JuiceDefender work or are they do they just use more battery?

They work very well. My galaxy nexus lasts much longer with it.

Uses even less battery to just shut off data manually when you're not using it. It's really not that hard to do.

It just automatically turns data and stuff off instead of doing it manually. I personally don't like using it. If you need that extra battery, this does work

They often drain more battery toggling data on/off constantly than just leaving it on. And of course you get no push notifications when data is off...

Hi All,
I have installed the Juice Defender Plus. Since the first day of the installation, noticeable battery life improvement was seen.
Indeed, if u keep your data OFF (this consuming the most power) then...I can say that u do not need Juice Defender.
However, if u prefer an application to manage these settings automatically, instead of manually enabling/disabling data, then I recommend the use of Juice Defender.
Also, the application has a lot of settings that can be customized based on your needs.
I have it for around 6 months and I am still using it. I am stock...no root, no nothing
Hope this helps.

I mostly agree with this.
It really depends on your usage scenario though. If you don't use your phone a lot (or wake it frequently) during the day (and don't mind being 15/30 minutes behind on emails and other notifications), apps like JuiceDefender may potentially save you a bit of juice - if configured reasonably. I used to use JD a lot, and used to argue for it quite passionately. At some point, I stopped (I think I just forgot to restore it after changing ROMs) and I realized that I wasn't really using much more power during the day - and I was able to get real-time push notifications (rather than waiting every 15/30 minutes for JD to allow it). Now I just use Tasker to intelligently manage my device's radios under certain situations and my phone has no trouble making it through the day.
Eh no. It's the same or worse.
Plus I hate how I have to wait for data to reactivate.
--------------------------------------------------
If I have helped you.... hit that sexy thanks button. ^_^
I used to use it and it worked great. Battery life was great but my "smart phone" was not so smart as I was often not notified of any emails or data related content.
I mean you have such a powerful phone and I'm sure that is why you got it... why limit it? just a thought.
I started using a widget for my 3g. When I tried JD on PA sprint it slowed my 3g for some reason. I'm sure I could test it more. Or I could try not to be lazy and use the widget.

Fool me once...with JB remember to disable Con Optimizer

FYI, for the 3rd update in a row Sprint enables Connection Optimizer by default. It is a HUGE battery drainer in the past, and maybe even more so in the JB release. Remember to go into..
Settings --> More Settings --> Mobile Networks --> Connections Optimizer
and uncheck.

But does it stick as disabled when you disable it? I had that problem in LI3 and I ended up freezing it with Titanium Backup.
You have to go to /system/app and delete or rename Connection Manager.apk.
Even if you disable it. It will be turned on again.

It is causing hell on my phone today. Keeps flipping out and flapping my WiFi connection. Just checked it in Better Battery Stats...yep, this is the third worst offender behind screen and media services. And Sprint pushed out a buggy update that won't let people turn it off...
With this and their incredibly stupid removal of Internet Calling, I can see LJ7 being pulled or a fast update being pushed out ASAP.

[Q] WiFi turning itself on?

Anyone having problems with WiFi turning itself on automatically? I don't think I have any apps that I didn't have before that would turn it on by themselves.
Go to settings, more, connections optimizer. Turn it off.

Thanks!
Didn't realize that Sprint added this to decrease their traffic by randomly turning it on and draining my battery!
If it's the same as other phones, they claim it conserves power. It doesn't have to search for a signal.

From my three days of experience with it, it seems like it searches for a WiFi signal not often enough so you'll leave your house and then WiFi will be on for a while before it realizes there is no WiFi and then be searching for WiFi that whole time you're gone, waking up to do so. Not sure if it also searches for an LTE signal or not too.

Yes, use it now (Ulitmate) I have found nothing wrong personally. Mine's set for Data on with screen on, Data off screen off.. I don't have a schedule set or anything (i'm always off and on the phone anyway) does increase the battery life a bit.. Download, try it for a bit.. see what you think overall.
I did use it before, just the light version. it was indeed a battery extender. But now I am using ON(X).

Juice defender WILL help. I get about 24hrs to a charge. It simply disables data/location/wifi when not in use and can be customized to run different ways for different apps
-SlimBean...the bulimic's choice for the Galaxy III
Hope this helps. It's fully customizable and it does wonders. U can train it to learn your wifi and after a while, never touch the toggle again. Use it for games so they don't go online and pick up those annoying ads (if your unrooted). And u can schedule when the net comes on to get emails and so forth when your not touching you phone.

Been using Ultimate from the beginning and if set up correctly is the difference between night and day for battery life. It works very well with no problems whatsoever on my end.
+1 When setup properly it can save a lot of juice. Or turn data off when not needed it will save a little more than using JD. But I rather have JD running so things are seamless. For Streaming audio like Spotify I find setting for enable/screen off works the best.

Be honest and tell people you have an extended battery.
i got a small issue with JD ultimate:
i set it quite correctly i think, but then, it prevents datas from coming to my phone, even when they're enabled.
let me explain better:
i set it so datas are off when screen is off and on when screen is on.
so i turn my phone on, datas take smth like 5 to 10 seconds to enable, everything normal till here, then the small H or G appear meaning i'm connected through 3G, but even then, i'm still offline... i wait, and wait 5 mins, but still, the H or G is visible on top right of my screen but.. no data.
i disable juice defender, restart my phone, didn't solve.
then i uninstall it completely, restard my phone, and everything works fine again...
anyone could help me on this one?
