Just got the phone...Contact issuses - LG Optimus G (International)

Just got this phone, its fast, screen looks incredible, everything seems very smooth. There is one problem i see with the contacts. When i go to type a new text message i begin with typing the persons name. For some reason there doesn't seem to be a auto complete for every person. Kinda weird, is anyone else seeing this?
If anyone else has any questions about he phone feel free to ask i shall do my best to answer.
Sean

It works perfect for me. After typing first 2 letters, it shows all suggestions.

weird...i switched to handcent anyway

Jerky messages screen

Is it just me, or is the SMS screen a bit jerky and slow? I do have a 1000+ messages in there, but I can't imagine why it would make the scrolling so poor.

Actually it's almost 3 years worth of messages (transferred it from phone to phone).
Anyone else experiencing similar issues?
I had to factory reset my phone because of this a couple of days back. My contacts went blank and I could barely load the messages.
I can confirm this. Scrolling through sms is laggy and not very responsive. Even in threads with only less than 10 messages. So annoying...
Mines always been like that :-( grown to put up with it

doesn't froyo fix this?
If you let your message count get that high, then you're bound to encounter speed loss with the app. Try clearing your messages? Unless you need to know what happened 3 years ago?

Technically no. They should have dealt with performance issues with a high volume of text messages. I work within software development, and something like this would most certainly raise a red flag.
Hey sorry to raise a thread from the dead.
My Messages app now runs extremely slowly - can take 5-10 seconds to load an SMS thread and sometimes lags when i'm typing a reply.
Sounds like other people have experienced similar issues. Does anyone have any suggestions for fixing this? It's almost certainly down to having a large number of messages in the thread (over 3,500 from this one contact for reasons i won't go into!) but surely with a modern smartphone it should be able to handle lots of text messages! My iPhone with 2 years worth of messages had no such issues.
One other issue - for no reason whatsoever it somtimes jumps me back up to the very top of the thread of texts meaning i either have to spend ages scrolling down or back up and reload it go get it to show the most recent ones. Anyone else experienced this?
I dont have any issues with lag etc but i second the jump-to-top issue.. its happening once a day for sure and im sooo sick of it! Anyone knows anything?

So just as an update on my woes - my phone on Friday randomly wiped every single one of my text messages. I reset the phone but nothing came back.
Great.
On the plus side, messages is now running very fast. But seriously, a smartphone that can't handle lots of text messages (which are surely microscopic in file size) is just pathetic.
A person who can't be bothered to store extra messages seperatly is pathetic. There are apps to store/back up messages and if you are constantly referencing 2 year old messages you need help.
Just my opinion though.
I realise your comments aren't targeted at me but perhaps rather than just insulting someone's choices you could actually be helpeful and tell them the names of the apps you talk of.
Not even going to bother addressing the insular comments.
Search "SMS backup" on the market. There are lots and lots of apps. "Backup to gmail" is one I saw that looks good. I personally don't news or use any backup solution for SMS.

messaging bugs

This happens about many times a day when I choose a contact from my past messages it opens a totally different contact that may or may not have been visible in the list. Also occasionally when i am typing it double types part of the word so if I type "really" it might be "reareally". Anyone else get this?
Which ROM? Have you tried using an alternative app?
I am using stock 2.3.3. I just downloaded handcent and it seems to work good so far. Its no big deal , just curious.
I had that issues with the stock ROM as well. I use Handcent as well and don't have that issue.
That said, it appears to be an issue on the Thunderbold too. Apparently Verizon and HTC are aware about it, according to what my VZW rep has told me.
Thanks for the infomation.
that is a problem with android, not HTC. Google has acknowledged the problem but there has not yet been a fix released.
Nope, doesn't seem like it happens on AOSP Android. My cousin has the sensation and the double word thing happens to me and him. We just use handcent.
Sent from my ADR6350 using XDA Premium App
I can't say that I ever had that issue with AOSP. I used Handcent most of the time then anyway because I preferred the interface to AOSP.
Never had this issue on cm7. I get weird errors too. For instance, if I type in landscape and send it then go portrait the last word I typed is shown. Sometimes after I reply to a message the message I sent shows as new. Unacceptable.

It is definitely a bug that has plagued android for a long time. Here is a post where you can read about the different bugs that Android SMS has. Once again, this is not specific to HTC devices. I used to experience this same problem on my fascinate.
http://www.engadget.com/2010/12/31/android-still-has-horrible-text-messaging-bugs-thatll-get-you-f/
yeah i get that bug where you see a text you recently sent as a reply and the threat still has an unread.

UK users - Speech to text

OK guys, before I rant at Google, does anyone else's phone do this?
I tap the little mic icon on the keyboard and speak. It gets the first three or four words, but every word after that is just a name from my contacts.
If I switch it to US English it works fine but I have to talk with an American accent to get it to recognise my speech.
I've reported it Here. Please star it if you want Google to resolve the issue.

Just tried the phrase
Testing speech to text to see if it works.
First time major fail .... including throwing a contact name in
Second attempt with tv on mute and it worked perfectly.
Im an ex southerner so dont have much accent
Mine is set to English UK and I don't even know some of the words it thinks I am saying.
Don't even think it is english

Try more than a few words as it only seems to glitch badly after the first sentence. Try talking to it like Duarte does and mine just chucks out a list of assorted forenames and surnames.
Annoying as I could talk to the old version like I was having a conversation.
I've reported it Here. Please start it if you want Google to resolve the issue.
Yeah absolutely, after more than a few words it seems to massively prioritise contact entries.
For example, "It's so cool" became "Richard Poole", which although a similar sound at the end (and a compliment for Mr. Poole) didn't seme remotely connected. And every word after were combinations of contact names. I find I have to keep doing short sentences/sentence fragments at a time, which appears to ruin the point of speech-to-text.
Luckily I'm not a big fan of talking at my phone. Hence Siri not being a selling point on the 4S for me.
It's a bit hit or miss but I'm not getting any contact names appearing.

I'm finding my galaxy nexus much worse at recognising my voice than my HD2 running gingerbread was. I'd say with that I got about a 95% accuracy rate vs the Galaxy Nexus getting maybe 50% if that.

I'm having no issues with the voice recognition at all. No contact names coming up, even after several sentences. I think it's more accurate too (for my voice, anyway), though it still gets it wrong sometimes!
Being able to dictate punctuation is very cool.
I had a little try with the speech to text and it was pretty poor. I hadn't put my contacts in yet but I was on wifi. It got most of the words wrong and lagged quite a lot. I'll test it a bit more extensively once I get my replacement phone
My Galaxy S was far better at recognising my accent.
Can someone else test this, I think it is a bug..
click voice button and say 'text [someones name on your contact list]'
When the screen pops up to enter a text message there is no way of inputting any text.
Ive had no problems with lagging it works ok for me when using for google search for the odd couple of words, but trying to dictate a sentence i've never got 100% accuracy.
I'm from saaarf laaandun no one has a clue what I say most of the time
So talk to text has no chance

for me some times its excellent and sometimes its useless and i get loads of contacts names that sound nothing like what i have said like some of you.
If there is any background noise at all i usually find it doesnt know what im saying. Some words for me it just wont pick up no matter how many times i try... the one that comes to mind is 'sure' it always comes up with 'so' lol.

i just tested this with 3 or 4 rather long sentences. I have a pretty weird accent (mix of Southern, central and northern regional English) and it never once matched anything i said to a contact.
it messed a few words up (understandably), but i'm not experiencing this particular bug.

[Q] any1 who uses handcent, please read and see if this happens to you.. Annoying...

Hello all.. Ok here is a weird on, well maybe.. Does this happen to anyone...
SO I get a message and pull down my status bar, and click on it.. Lets say its John.. I go to Johns thread and see the mesage, and I notice it says a different name at top then john.. Lets say Rachel... I am in Johns thread and I send a message it goes to Rachel but shows up still in Johns Thread.. Essential meaning it goes to wrong person.. I have to stare at the top to make sure it is right person now.. It doesnt happen all that much but I have sent messages to people that I did not mean to because it had put a different name on the top...
Has anyone else seen this??? Any ideas?????? Its driving me nuts.. I have seen it on the Ratings in the market people have complained about it, but not sure if its handcent or something on my phone?
Thanks

Welp, there's a free 'thanks' for ya. Anyway, I read about someone having this same issue, but I don't remember if they stated it was specifically for Handcent or not. Me personally, I've been using handcent for a while now, and I've never experienced this problem, nor am I now.
However, I rarely use the notification bar shortcut to get into handcent. I'm using the ICS lockscreen through WidgetLocker, and left circle is handcent, so that's what I do 99% of the time to get to my messages.
Not sure if it's an issue of getting there with the notification bar or not.
ill trying using the actual icon instead of the staus bar for a while, see if that makes a difference..
Just a thought (not sure that it would actually help) but have you disabled all options under the stock message application's settings? Also if you could post/pm your handcent settings.
Sent from my SPH-D700 using Tapatalk
yes. at point stock was removed as well....
what do you mean post setting? example??
Have you tired reinstalling the app? Or clearing your Dalvik and cache? Clear app data?
This usually clears things up. I have never had this particular issue... Do you have any of Handcents add ons installed? Perhaps the issue is with one of those...? Just some thoughts
yes done all of that.. still not helping issue... it doesnt do it all the time either... just sometimes but annoying enough...
I mean post your handcent settings.

well there are ALOT of settings within handsent that can be changed.......
but here are my send message settings
Comp check, is on
auto conver to mms
auto resize pic
quick attach
prevent resend
sms to email gateway are the only things checked...
In receive settings
handcent delivery report
auto retrieve
roaming auto retrieve
timestamp is default
self check
are all checked....
And you said you removed the stick messaging app from your system?

what rom are you using? my wife has said this has happened to her. she is still using midNight 5.3 (EC05/Froyo); she can be technology challanged so I figured she either saved a phone # twice on 2 people. Trying to grab the phone away from her while she is feeding her words with friends addiction is tough though!
I have been using handcent since I had the moment and on my epic for over a year. I've never seen it happen. Not that I haven't had any issues with it; but they usually fix things. This seems really random though
im on acs ics v5.5... ive emailed handcent numwrous times about it.. no help yet
I've been using handcent for a very long time and also never encountered this problem. I've used about every single rom out for the epic since ec05 and had this app on my moment as well
So idk what could be wrogn.. I once had a problem where I sent a txt to the wrong person cuz of this app but its not the way u said it happened it was cuz of low signal and txts not sending so they started saving some as drafts and some kept retrying and 2 got mixed up and sent to the wrong people lol
Sent from my SPH-D700 using XDA App
yeah it is very strange.. and I have sent some messages that should not have been sent to that person.... But i never payed attention the top sender... It will say one name but show a different persons thread.. I just have to pay attention now and be careful not to hit send till I know the right person is at the top...

[Q] Google Voice Notification Not Going Away

Howdy,
Before I upgraded to CyanogenMod 9.0, I would get a Google Voice message notification for a text message. I'd go into the web version of Google Voice, answer the text and then after a bit, the notification would go away on my phone.
Now switched to CM9 and the notification doesn't go away unless I answer the text on my phone or clear it out on the phone.
I've tried GummyNex and CM9 and they both do it.
Has anyone else seen this? I've done the thing where I've uninstalled GV, did the *73, deleted all the Verizon VMs and the reinstalled GV but it still does it.
Don't think its related to your ROM as I'm having the exact same issue on stock 4.0.4 and have always been on stock. Seems to have started a couple weeks ago....
Been pulling my hair out trying to figure out what's going on and was about to start a thread myself asking if anyone else had the issue. Thought I was just crazy at first, but I know for a fact this is not how the app acted before. I've tried changing all kinds of things for my browser use of voice.google.com, deleted/re-installed the app, and nothing works.
I'll be texting using just the browser for a bit and look at my phone and I'll have a notification for "25 Google Voice Messages" or whatever. They never clear. I notice that when opening the GV app to the thread I'm texting in, it hasn't synced in the background, and takes a few seconds for the messages I had sent to show up in the thread. It seems as though Google Voice isn't getting background sync anymore.
Aww man So it was just highly coincidental that it happened around the same time I switched over to a different rom.
It's surprisingly frustrating for such a little thing. I just use it so much that it forces me to check the phone and clear it manually to make sure I don't *actually* have a new message when I'm using both my phone and the web app.
Argh.
Yeah - nothing I've found has fixed the issue.

Yes I think it's actually a coincidence as I said I've been on stock and it all of a sudden stopped working as it was. This is just really weird because there's been no update to the app or anything.
It's extra frustrating because Google Voice is my primary #, so I'm doing about 99.9% of my texting with it, and really enjoy being able to use voice.google.com. Dealing with clearing GV notifications every time I pick my phone up is very lame.
I don't believe I'm experiencing this, gv on GSM nexus, stock 4.0.4 rooted. Straight talk tmo mvno

I don't currently have this with my yakju 4.0.4 OTA stock ROM, but I have seen it before on this phone and every other phone I've owned across stock & custom ROMs. Fairly confident it's a problem with the app itself

Even moreso ridiculous if this is a known issue and they haven't addressed it even with these several early 2012 updates to the GV app, which made it a lot better overall in UI and UX. I just don't see how it can come and go with no changes whatsoever to your settings.
Mine definitely does the same thing... I thought it used to clear them for me, but I wasn't sure, and figured I was just thinking of how Google Talk clears the messages.
Not a huge deal to me, but it would definitely be nice if they would fix this. Our best bet is to make a post on the help forums with a bunch of posts in it.

If anyone has a chance, they should make a post in the Google Voice forums here (I'll try to do it later when I have a chance if no-one else gets to it): http://productforums.google.com/forum/#!categories/voice/using-google-voice-on-a-mobile-device. I heard that Google Engineers do monitor / read these sometimes, so if we all post in a thread there is a chance it will get read / fixed.
I really wish there was a better way to get stuff like this fixed.
Bit late to the party. Just wanted to chime in that in my experience I don't think I've ever seen the GV notification clear itself after checking the web interface on my computer.
I've been using android for a year now and have gone through 3 phones and the asus transformer tablet. My current phone is running a CM9 based rom, but still it doesn't clear these notifications.
Man, I'd love it if it did.
Note: I think that if you use the GV widget, you will see that the notification on the widget DOES clear after checking the web interface (or at least it did in GB because I just tested this on my current phone and widget doesn't clear it either). I suppose this means that GV is pushing the "read" status of an sms to our phones. The notification on the notification bar, however, still persists despite this.
EDIT: Given my last test on my current phone, it looks like the widget doesn't clear the notification like it used to on GB. It looks like it is, in fact, a syncing issue.

I can confirm that it actually did used to clear when viewed on another device, and this is the intended action. It should work exactly like an IMAP e-mail account (say, the GMail app). If you view a message on the device or in a web browser, it is cleared as read on the other. Google Voice used to do the same, and stopped doing so randomly. It's completely a backend problem.
Really wish they would fix this. Still happening on JB. Very annoying for those of us who text from the web all day.
