Mandatory Update Bricked my Phone.... - LG Optimus G (International)

So I've had the Optimus G since last night, and I noticed there was an AT&T update, but I postponed it. However, after postponing it three times, it launched the update automatically and forced me to update. The phone rebooted into the update screen, going through a firmware and software update before rebooting again. It got to the AT&T "Rethink possible" logo and stays there forever. No amount of hard resets help. I had root before the update, but I've read on here that others had root and updated just fine.... has this happened to anyone else? Do I have any other option besides going back to AT&T?
EDIT: How do I boot into recovery mode? I've read that for other LG phones you have to hold down both volume buttons while holding the power, but when I do that it just goes to the AT&T splash like usual.

Did you try holding the power button? I was able to get into download mode by pressing pwr/vol+/vol- simultaneously with usb plugged in, but I don't know if that will help your situation.

Yikes, sorry to hear that. I had no problems and kept root.
Sounds like a return if you can't get it going quickly. You shouldn't have to deal with that on a mandatory update.
Good luck!

From the manual, that I downloaded from the LG website (not sure that this helps, if you don't know what to delete):
5. Using Safe Mode and System Recovery Using Safe mode
To recover your phone when malfunctioning.
1 Turn off your phone and reboot. When you see the booting animation (Rethink Possible SM) press and hold the Volume Down Key . Your Home screen will then be displayed with the words "Safe mode" in lower left corner.
2 From the Home screen, tap the Menu Key and tap All settings > General tab > Applications.
3 Tap one of the available tabs at the top of the screen and select the application you wish to uninstall.
4 Tap Uninstall and OK to confirm.
5 After uninstalling the application, turn off and reboot your phone.

Neither of these solutions did anything, but thanks anyways.

Bummer sorry to hear that. Is the att store far away? I really don't think this has anything to do with root.

No, it's only a few miles away, but as a college student with no car it makes things a little harder. I'm not sure what happened, I'm surprised they forced me to update...

Moved to Q & A section.

Formatting Tablet Help

OK, so my little 9 year old brother got the Acer Iconia Tablet A100 so he wouldnt feel so left out that everyone else in the household has a tablet but not him, well he thought he would be smart and turn off the wifi and place a lock on it. Well he forgot the lock code and after many attempts he has to login with his google credentials, but the problem is that the wifi is off so it wont fix anything. So im trying to format it for him, I can get to the recovery screen, but only the volume buttons will work and the no other button will let me confirm the selection. Dose anyone know what i can do?
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QwyGSwmzVtM
1. Place the rotation lock switch in the up position
2. Press and hold the Volume down button, which is located farthest from the rotation lock
3. With the Volume down button held, press and hold the Power button for 3 seconds then release it. Continue holding the Volume down button.
4. Once the tablet vibrates, switch the rotation lock on and off repeatedly while still holding the Volume down button.
5 Release the Volume down button and stop switching the rotation lock once the "Erasing Userdata..." message appears in the upper left corner of the screen
6. Once the factory reset has been completed your tablet will load to the Welcome screen.
7 Your Factory Data Reset has completed now follow the onscreen steps to setup your tablet.

Hard reset the tablet, you'll lose everything, but it will revert to factory condition.
Power off the tablet
Hold Volume + (the one furthest from the power button/ lock switch, right if holding landscape)
While holding Volume + press and hold the Power button
Once it turns on, holding the Volume +, release Power and wiggle the lock switch up and down a few times.
Screen will then say its formatting or resetting or whatever it says.
After this completes, it may reboot, or power off, or continue booting into android, whatever it does, just let it go into android
It should greet you with the Welcome screen for setup.
Resume playing with it.
Edit: Ah I was gonna link a youtube video but Romman0 beat me to it! I must be getting slow in my old age.
Lol, I just happened to be on.
I was editing a bunch trying to get the [tube] code to work (to no avail) and added text instructions.

You can still hard reset yes but it only erases user data nothing else.
If you want to go back to stock use one of the update.zip methods in vaches stock rom thread. It'll go back to stock recovery. If you want just the stock recovery there's a stock recovery.IMG around somewhere I'll see if I can find it.

[Q] acer a100 update failed?

A friend brought me a tablet at work today and told me that after he received an update the tablet's screen wouldn't unlock and the battery wouldn't charge past 12%. I got the tablet home and turned it on. it let me unlock the screen but kept going to a blank screen with "android system" in the top left corner. I press the home button and it goes to the home screen but all the icons flash on and off the screen. I tired using the hardware reset switch this did nothing. I tried a factory reset by using the volume+, power and screen lock switch. Factory reset went through okay but now when it boots up (after acer and android logos) it immediately attempts to shut down. it will stay on the shutting down screen indefinitely. to my knowledge this tablet has never been rooted.
I searched the forums but couldn't find any info, everyone had rooted then downgraded to get the updates. I do know that the tablet is under warranty still and that it could be sent in for service.
I would also like to note that before the factory reset the tablet would only let me unlock it once, then after i would reboot I was unable to unlock it again until it had set for some time. After the factory reset the tablet come to the blank screen with android system in the top left. the only function that would work was the screen rotation lock switch. after a reboot it would immediately attempt to shut down.
I would like to know if there is anything I can do so that we don't have to send the tablet off for service. I'm sure that I am overlooking something here. thanks.
It sounds pretty screwed. It seems like a bad flash, try running the ICS "leak" available in the dev section, name it update.zip then place it on your external SD card. Power on holding the volume key closest to the lock switch and report what it does next.

Any update on this? I know it's been forever, but I was just recently given an A100 that's doing the exact same thing (sitting at "Shutting Down).
I've been able to reflash via the update.zip, but with no luck.
Nevermind. I was able to fix mine with "SD_Acer_A100_1.014.08_COM_GEN1_full_user.zip" from this link:
http://www.imeiserver.org/download/index.php?dir=Flash Files /ACER/A100/
I renamned it "update.zip", held the left volume button (in landscape mode) while powering it on. The update ran, then it was stuck on the "Android" screen. I powered it off, then held the right volume button while powering it on and moving the screen lock button. After reboot, it was as if it just came out of the box.
I hope this helps someone else.

Actual it should be renamed to just "update" because the system adds the .ZIP so if you rename it update.zip it shows up as "update.zip.zip" and that won't work...

Stuck in All Auto Test Mode

Hi,
I just got my G3 today and entered 3845#*XXX# to switch off thermal throttling. I happened to see a test mode and clicked it. My phone reboots into a MiniOS with lots of options. First option is the only one which I can interact with using the touch screen and it is an automatic test of the touch screen. Volume keys do not work.
On pulling the battery out and powering on, it boots to the test mode.
Tried recovery (Vol- and power key) confirmed the prompts, the phone switches off after showing the little android loading logo, flashes the LG logo and boots into this test mode(MiniOS) again.
I thought the test mode will be like something that HTC and Samsung have, didn't expect it to be like that. Kindly help! I've been searching the internet but haven't found a solution to this. I spotted some other threads for another LG device that happened to automatically go into this mode but those tools and methods won't work here.
Thank you.
Edit:
I found a thread on xda for the G2 with the same thing that's happened to my phone. Unfortunately a solution wasn't posted there. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2535768
It's more accurately called the All Auto Test
Edit2:
In searching All Auto Test on Google i happened to come through a link which might have a simple fix (if I'm understanding the members English right)
It says to press the power key on the LG logo and a prompt will ask if you'd like to switch it back to normal mode. I'm gonna try this once I reach home. Link:http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2613404

I switched on with power key, left it when the LG logo came and hit power key again, but that doesn't work. It goes to miniOS again.
Unlike the G2 mentioned above, I don't have a notif bar on top and I don't see a wallpaper and navigation bar.
Okay, I figured it out. Thanks to member goldenfish
So what he means is when in ATT mode, only the first option is selectable by touch, to select the other options you hold power key and then tap the options. So there was an option which makes the device turn "MiniOS> Normal Boot". I did just that and my g3 booted *phew
It's all stock now tho, maybe because of the factory reset I tried earlier, but at least it's out of the damn thing!

If your phone keeps booting to the miniOS, you;d see a bunch of options. Now when trying to open/access an option only the first one will respond to your touch. Others will just show a crosshair where you tapped on the screen. To open/access/activate other options you need to hold the power key first and then tap the screen. This will allow you to access a option called boot(which switches your phone from miniOS to normal boot)
I was stuck in this stupid mode messing around too. Thanks for the tip on how to get out!

Another idiot stuck in test mode
I was in Europe and my LG G3 kept shutting off, so i got a new LG G3 855 while traveling.
Worked fine in Europe.
When i got home, i noticed i didn't have 4G showing, so, like a fool went and tried to become a techie......:crying:
So where i am ....
when i boot the phone, i see the LG logo, then it goes into a minios logo with 5 blue arrows.
After that wherever i touch on the screen is just a red circle with a + sign.
I have seen folks talking about getting into a minios menu but all i see is the red +
any magic out there?

You should be able to simply hit the Power button, but if you're on a frozen screen, press and hold the Power button, then select "Normal Boot".

[Q] Universal Switch enabled, screen unresponsive

So I activated Universal Switch on S6 Edge to check it out, something went wrong in the settings (long story short, got a pop up while setting it up), now screen unresponsive.
It works, I just get this blue horizontal line scanning the screen and nothing else but the power button and home button works. Tried safe mode, no bueno. How can I disable US feature without resetting to factory or at least no data wipe (if possible!)?

All help is appreciated.

The way I had fixed this is by holding down the power button, both up and down sound buttons, and the home button until it restarted. When the device turned back on it gave the option to turn the setting off. Hope it helped!

Thanks alot

It doesn't give me the option to turn it off
Hi,
I have been struggling with Universal Switch on a Samsung S5 Neo. I switched it on, but was never able to switch it off again.
These are findings so far:
-> Did a factory reset using "Sound Up", "Home" and "Power" button simultaneous.
-> The device comes back and wants to configure itself again.
-> I restored my settings from Google, but this immediately brought back "Universal Switch"
-> Factory Reset again and configured the device, but told Google that I want to use it as a "New Device".
-> Now I can use my device in a proper way.
-> In Google Play Store I find all my Apps which were linked to my account and reinstalled them and I am back in business again.
-> Took me half a day to sort this out.
The programmer who designed and programmed this should be hung and shot and poisoned, because this is absolute Crapware.
Hope this helps for all the others who are suffering.
You can also push the home button three times and it should turn it off.
thank u ur the best
Ok, so i have exactly the same problem except my home button doesn't work
Anyone one know how to sort this without having to take it in to a store?
I was faced with this problem before and looked everywhere and couldnt find a fix. This was a while ago. So I dont remember what I did to clear it. I was cleaning off the screen and touched the home button as I was wiping it off and the problem began again.... I just came across your comment because all the others failed. I pressed the home button 3 times quickly and the blue lines stopped scrolling. In addition, I went over the accessibility and I turned off the "Universal Switch" option as much as the option allows. I hate this function. I do not use it or need it (for my needs). I hope I can remember what to do next time this happens. I swore to myself I would remember last time, but apparently that wasnt a guarantee. This time, I will write it down and put is somewhere I know I will find it next time I see these nefarious blue lines scrolling. Hopefully I wont see it again since I disabled it more than it was to begin with. Thank you ever so for commenting. You saved me a lot of frustration!

The recovery is TWRP and the root is through SuperSU FREE (CM) v2.79-SR3. The On/Off button doesn't usually work. If the phone is off then pressing On/Off has no effect. Occasionally it works for no reason I can see, it seems to be random, but for the most part it simply doesn't have any effect. If the phone is on then the same is true. Turning it off from the On/Off button is usually impossible. I get round this through Settings>Display & lights>Wake on plug. This means I can activate the phone by connecting it to a PC using its USB cable. This will activate the phone immediately if it is off. It doesn't help with turning it off and I am usually reduced to taking the battery out. The phone is effectively useless although it is clearly NOT bricked. When I can turn it on it works fine.
I don't know if this is a hardware or software problem. If it's a software problem I don't know if the fault is in Lineage or TWRP or SuperSU. I noticed that the problem existed before I installed SuperSU. Has anyone else come across this problem? I'm reluctant to bin the phone because I spent such a long time getting Lineage on to it, but, if I can't turn it on or off it's not really a phone. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
@erich_vogt it's more a hardware problem, you can buy a new button (find link of online stores in accessories section or google.it).
for easyness you don't need to plug charge/usb everytime, you can set volume button waker, find in settings > button (don't remember where correctly, it will be somewhere there) then use volume switches to wake it.

There have been power button bugs, but only in the OS. If it's not turning on from off, then I think the switch is broken! A common failure in old phones, which is why "volume button to wake" is important, to reduce load on the power button.
Thanks very much for offering to help.
I already had the option for the Volume control buttons to wake the phone turned on. It's here - Settings > Buttons > Volume Buttons > Wake up device. This worked for a while then stopped. I disassembled the phone to look at the On/Off button. I tried turning the phone on directly from the metal contact pad beneath the plastic button. This worked. When the phone had booted I checked to see if there was another nightly update for Lineage. There was the 3rd of Dec update. I downloaded and installed the nightly update using TWRP. It reported a successful install. The phone rebooted and never got past the Google boot-up screen. I waited for a few minutes and the took the battery out and tried turning on again from the metal contact pad. The phone booted but again got stuck (or seemed to) on the Google boot-up screen. I'm afraid that's it for me. This doesn't appear to be related to anything I have done or not done. The phone is just taking up too much time and it will have to go the the local recycler. Life is, as they say, too short. Thanks again for your suggestions.

3rd dec nightly has problem with booting, get back to older than it.
Reset volume button waker, if it stopped working. I never had problems with volume buttons.
I'd second the idea of it being software. I've had problems with all builds after 20171112. I get the impression there was something overlooked when the developers unified the builds for different GNex variants.
If you still have the phone, try that 20171112 build.
I don't know how to roll back to an earlier build. The phone will not boot. If I try VolumeDown+On/Off to try to get into TWRP Recovery mode nothing happens. The adb bridge option is turned on but if I connect the phone to my PC with a usb cable it does not appear in Device Manager as it used to. If I run ".\adb devices" it is not listed so clearly adb cannot find it. I don't know what else I can do.

Ah, ok. Sorry, I thought you could still do more than that, but it was rebooting and unusable in that sense.
That's well beyond any help I can offer you. I hope you got any data off it.
