How to disable OTA update , I'm rooted - Samsung Epic 4G Touch

Hi,
I have a galaxy s2 from sprint...I rooted it last month with the latest ver of ICS at that time. (Fh13 i think)
anyway, 3 days, my phone downloaded the OTA update for ICS and it EVEY 2 MINUTES, there is a pop up asking me to install or install later.
I have done the following:
1. downloaded fotakill.apk and copied it to my sd download folder and instlaled/ran...did nothing. ( i cannot copy this file to /system/apps - error: "read only" )
2. tried to disable fotaupate.apk / fwupgrade from applications/all from andriod settings menu... this did not work.
there is no fotaupdate.apk app and no fwupgrade.
So, can anyone help me get rid of this stupid pop up msg ??

I am assuming that you also tried the zip file in the thread about how to disable OTA updates? I created one of the zips that worked flawlessly and it has been updated and I have also used that zip without issue.... Just search Google or this section and yee shall find
Edit: Also you would need root explorer or es file explorer to gain r/w access to your system/app folder to transfer and set permissions.... All this information is out there for you. I understand you may be new but please understand its good to actually read up on your phone before you root it and potentially destroy because you of lack of knowledge.
Sorry man no disrespect just know this is a tricky phone to mess with and you should be careful

ok..i have gave es file explorer root access and i was able to move fotakill.apk to root/system/app and install frm there. i also renamed the .zip file to .zip.bak. i also deleted the ota update file from /cache
also i deleted sprint installer using titanium backup
and deleted systemupdate app
after all this...still.. im getting ota update notification

Go to recovery and wipe cache. Its still in there which is why its still giving you the prompt

Problems after update to Jelly Bean

Hello great community. I have a yakju version of Galaxy Nexus and my case goes like this :
First
Unlocked
Unrooted
Running ICS 4.0.4 ( build IMM76I , XXLA2 radio ) stock
Meanwhile
Installing Nexus Root Toolkit v1.5
BackUp Files, Contacts, SMS etc
Unlock and Root
BackUp with ROM Manager ClockworkMod
Install stock ICS 4.1.1 Jelly Bean ( f946a4120eb1.signed-yakju-JRO03C-from-IMM76I.f946a412.zip )
Then
Running ICS 4.1.1 but with these problems :
1. When i go to set a ringtone it open my file browser (ES File Explorer) to select a file (!) and not the common ringtone list. Like there's no ringtones in phone.
2. I restored contacts successfully but there aren't sorted in groups as i had it. (Friends, Family etc)
3. I cannot delete some folders and files in my sdcard (like my rom backup - i have stored this in my pc btw)
4. I cannot root again using SuperSU (failed)
Any help about any of above would appreciate it. Thank you
ps It's my first time i'm doing all these stuff

1. The ES File Explorer is set as the default application that is opened when you want to select a ringtone.
Go to Settings, Apps, ES File Explorer, then press clear defaults. It should now ask you which application you want to use to select a ringtone.
2. You will have to do this again manually, unless you have your contacts on google or another service.
3. I'm not sure about this. Try deleting them by connecting to a PC.
4. You need to use a new version of SuperSU, I've attached it in this post.
Enjoy Jelly Bean!

Thank you very much! I have another question about the attached app. It's a zip file which contains META Information and binaries in a System folder. So i have to place the binaries at the right place in my phone (obviously at /system/xbin , /system/app ) right? And the META folder goes where?

No do not extract the Zip file!
If you have ClockWordMod installed simply boot into it and use install zip file command from it, and locate the zipped file (on your phone memory).
If you do not have CWM, use fastboot to boot into CWM (you can find that information on some other threads), and install the zip file from there.
Follow these steps: (except with the above zip file)
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=26328017&postcount=123
You have to copy over the zip file to your phone first, then boot into CWM, and install the zip file.

All Good! But i noticed another "problem" now.. in my Gallery i have a folder named "imageDownloader" who contains 700+ photos. I delete them all and after reboot it exists again. What is that anyway?
update: The images belongs to a folder named "07-11-2012_21-01" , it seems to be cached data of the app "Thumb". This folder is created by the backup, is located in sdcard and i can't delete it, even through my pc.. i don't know why :/
Unable to connect to Wireless N-only or 5GGz networks after update
I've been unable to connect to my home network on either band in the 'N' mode since updating to Jelly Bean. I have no problems seeing both networks and it says they're "saved", but when I click connect, it doesn't proceed to "authenticating" or obtaining an IP address.
I've tried several Custom ROMs with the same result, and I've never had this problem with any ICS versions and can regain connectivity by rolling back the update.
I've tried low-level troubleshooting (no network encryption, MAC reservation, multiple reboots, etc.) with no luck. I'm currently forced in a mixed N/G mode on 2.4 GHz to use my Wi-Fi.
There have been occasional reports of this over the last year or so on various platforms, but I'm wondering if there's any software/files, etc. that can be tweaked or looked at to see where this issue is manifested.
I cannot delete some files located in my /sdcard. I tried through "Root Browser" , through my PC... nothing worked :/ Any help please?

[How-to] Disable OTA updates on Stock + Rooted ROMs

1. Download FOTAKill.apk and copy to your Phone/SD
2. Use a root explorer (such as ES Explorer) to copy the file to /system/app
3. If the update already downloaded, delete it from /cache
4. reboot
*Credit for the apk goes to the CM team and or whoever creates the gapps packages!
Alternate method if you have a custom recovery *E4GT ONLY*:
1. Download the Disable.OTA.Updates.zip file and flash in CWM (this will install fotakill and clear cach for you)
*Thanks to tdunham for alternate method!
Screenshot 1: FOTAKill.apk in the /system/app folder
Screenshot 2/3: Checking for updates on EL29 shows I am up to date
Been running my phone this way for a few days and have had no update prompts since I followed the steps in the OP.
BTW, EL29 gives CRAZY good battery life after getting use to the high drain on FF18/AOSP.
works great thanks
My system/app is a read only folder, how do I change the permission so I can paste the apk to the app folder?

You need to be rooted and use a file manager (I use File Manager from the market) that supports root write access. Then set write access on the root and system folder from within the file manager settings. Then you can copy the files to the /system/app folder

I had to grant Superuser permission to my ES File Explorer program to allow me to copy the apk file to my /system/apps directory.
Fotakill did not work for me. OTA kept popping up. There is a zip file here on xda that you flash and finally fixed it. No more OTA.

What would the name of the folder be called in /cache? I am not sure if the update was downloaded or not. TIA.
Can someone explain how this works exactly? What is it doing to stop the notifications? Will this prevent me from being bugged to update to FH13 from FF18? -Grand

The apk was part of all gapps packages used on aosp roms such as CM7. However I noticed it was removed in the ics gapps packages, so I don't know if it will work on ics roms. It just blocks the ota update process keeping you from ever seeing an update prompt.

Once you have copied the apk to the phone /SD all you have to do is
1. Power down your device.
2. Press power and volume up key simultaneously for few seconds. (this will boot your phone in stock recovery)
3. Now using volume keys navigate to the option wipe cache partition and select it by pressing the home key or the power button on your device then reboot the phone.
These steps will clear the cache for your phone and if the ota was downloaded it will be removed from the phone.

Once your follow the steps below it will hopefully not bother you with any more ota's And if you have downloaded it already, clearing the cache will remove the downloaded ota from the phone. These steps will make sure you do not get any more notifications for the same.
1. Download FOTAKill.apk and copy to your Phone/SD
2. Use a root explorer (such as ES Explorer) to copy the file to /system/app
3. If the update already downloaded, delete it from /cache
4. reboot

This would definitely work, however what I don't know is if you run the risk of triggering the /emmc brick by wiping cache with the stock recovery. I feel better about having folks use a root explorer, navigate to /cache, and deleting the update file from there.
The file under /cache will look something like: "bbe3997e3067.SPH-D710_update_EL29_to_FF18.zip" (Example of the FF18 OTA file name) and will be around 200MB's in size.
I am getting no access with either Root Explorer or ES File Explorer. Under Root Explorer it is telling me that my file system is Read Only. And it just says "FOTAKill.apk cannot be moved" under ES File Explorer.
I am rooted, running Calkulins E4GT ROM.

There is probably a setting you need to turn on to enable root + read/write access.
In ES File explorer its:
1. menu key > settings > (scroll to the bottom of the list) > check "Root Explorer" > check "Mount File System"
2. You will need to "Grant" root access when it asks you.
3. Now you can paste the file into /system/app
Tried this on my stock gingerbread phone. FOTAKILL did not work for me.
There is a zip file somewhere in xda, that did it.

guys it does work and not for nothing but I posted this quite some time ago as a flashable zip file. I have used it on my stock based roms for quite some time and I have never had an issue as well as others. You can find the flashable zip here. Now you have to remember to clear cache(s) prior to flashing. This was also done back before the problem error of ET4g so please use a safe recovery.

Zeki tbd753b is it possible to gaini root and google play

Long time lurker first time poster here.
I recently bought a Zeki 7" TBD753B. I would like to obtain root and install google play however I can only find firmware for other model numbers. Does anyone know if it exists? The only thing I can find on this tablet is a warning not to buy, however I have not experienced the wakeup bug stated in the only other thread mentioning this model and the device seems to work quiet well for the cheap price.
Im mostly looking to get adfree working being as ads do slow this device down.
Thanks ahead of time.

That is the million dollar question. So far my answer is, you can't. First you'll need root access, I described that above. Put crystal zip on SD card, do not unzip file. Shut tablet down. Boot by holding volume down and power buttons. Should enter recovery, select update from EXT, select crystal file, then reboot now, you will see android updating message and then have superuser and busy box installed. That gets you about 50% there. I have tried to flash gapps without luck using the correct files. I believe the problem with this device to be the firmware. It's for ICS. I am thinking about rolling back OS to 4.0.3 and trying from there. The TBD782 is almost identical, thinking of trying a modded ROM I found in XDA forums. Basically that gets you to where I am. I believe the device is actually a momo9 variant/clone with allwinner a10 compatible chip. The manual I downloaded from above manufacturer (I can't post links yet) is identical to the TBD753B. You can also get a working version of livesuit from them. Hope any of that helps. I will report back when I have a working method.
Thanks for the replies. Please let me know when you figue something out.

I'm confirming root technique. 100% working.
can't find crystal root zip
I tried a search for crystal root zip and could not find on the xda site but did find a link using google but am not sure it is legitimate. Where on the forum can I find the link so I know it is the correct file? Also I was able to install Google Play on the TB782B without using a custom Rom. I used Links2SD. I installed a copy of the play store apk and then converted it to system app using Links2SD, rebooted and then it worked fine. Without converting it to system app it would not work properly but once converted it worked fine. Maybe this will work with the newer model.

I recieved the root from Zeki tech support
Build no 4.1.1 20121204
Root Flash with recovery Vol- and Power button
Copy the update zip into sd card
Insert the card into the tablet.
Hold vol - and press power button to go to recovery.
Release the vol- button once you enter recovery
navigate with vol button , and power to select
select apply update from ext
Select the update zip you copy earlier
once its done reboot
Vending for Google play store
the tablet is google ready you can install the vending.apk (aka google play store) just by simply tapping it without root. (wont survive factory reset)
Manual way to install google play with root (this will survive factory reset)
use file explorer/manager ie.. ES file explorer, Root file explorer etc
You can use any file manager that you want and
ITS A BASIC ANDROID KNOWLEDGE you need to mount the system folder into writable before copying or change permission
copy the vending apk into system/app and change permission into RW R R
and important REBOOT.
UPDATE
Due too many emails
let me try to explain as basic as possible
ZEKI tablet already has Google Services Framework installed you dont need to re-install it again.
If you install Google Play store by flashing Gapps zip make sure it doesnt include Google Services Framework APK on the zip files.
Otherwise you will encounter too many FC later on. Dont ask me about GApps.zip since i dont use those methods.
In order for you to access, copy or modify into/on system folder
you need to enable or mount the system folder as writable and your phone/tablet need to be rooted
You can use any file manager apps you want
ie.. ES File Explorer, Root Explorer, Astro File Manager or etc
Below is example for ES file explorer
Tap options
tap settings
Scroll down and select Root Settings
Put a Check mark for Root explorer and mount file system
You have to figure out with the file manager apps you use how to mount the File System as writtable
I dont know every single apps there
Try to GOOGLE it.
proper procedure
Thanks so much for the help! As for the update.zip can I do what I usually do and just go into settings/about tablet/system updates and update from there with the update file on the root of my sd card? And for the google apps I just copy it over to my tablet and just install after doing the update? Thanks again for your time.

Thanks so much for the help! As for the update.zip can I do what I usually do and just go into settings/about tablet/system updates and update from there with the update file on the root of my sd card? And for the google apps I just copy it over to my tablet and just install after doing the update? Thanks again for your time.

Limit your posting to one forum only,
Posting in multiple forums for the same question are confusing.
From the pictures it looks like you have corrupted files.
re-download it again the vending apk MD5 is 14BEBEC455594BD71C47B6F57164CA91.
and again I ask you What is your firmware.

The firmware just says (Build number) ZEKI 4.1.1 20121213, I dont see any other firmware number anywhere?
I appreciate you uploading the files needed for this. I dont appreciate u telling me to limit my posts though. Lol. Theres 2 threads. :what: And i didnt ask the same question, or say the same thing in both threads.
Anyway, ill figure it out. Thanks again for the root, and google play.

This worked great, if your having problems with the permissions, see how another file in system/apps has it's permissions set, using root explorer click on another file name, then permissions..it will show you how to properly set it for the vending.apk.

Its es file explorer that was giving me problems. Ive never used it in the past, so.....i got rid of it, and used 4shared to swoop up rom toolbox. Got it on the first shot with rom toolbox.
My suggestion........use rom toolbox. It sets proper permissions for the user automatically.

not working
I followed all instructions but I get a message "unfortunately, Google play store has stopped" after I setup my account

Most needed files & folders from 98.30.1

I started this for several reasons.
1) For those who have deleted some system/app(s) & want to manually restore to get ready for the KK ota.
2) /persist dilemma. It is only on our phone yet both recoveries allow you to format it but do not back it up!!!! http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=48941876&postcount=2061
3) /firmware Also not backed up. Both recoveries format it. But Rsd lite will restore it.
I put some very obscure folders here & they may never be needed! DO NOT GO & restore these just because I attached them! If it ain't broke don't fix it!
Get the full zip here http://batakang.com/ftp/?dir=devs/mhous33/XT907/98.30.1
It is the largest one there!
You can extract even a single system/app with Explorer free & paste it with es file to get OTA ready
But some /partitions are only on the phone. Some are created on boot
1 folder not ANYWHERE BUT ON YOUR PHONE is /persist.
Persist permissions are here
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2589790
Some wonder why Vzw does not want us rooting?
/Firmware is in the xml/fxz.
/System/app
/Vendor
/Firmware
/System/media.... stock boot animation/Dst animation.
Use Rom Manager fix perms for now. It has never failed me. Set them to all. Then run RM>fix permissions & reboot.
Permissions & ownership need to be set before use.
Rom Manager fix permissions is one good reason to have that app even if it did not WORK on our M, but it does.
Updated op.
So apps from "Data/App" can be deleted and still get the OTA, just don't delete apps from "System/App", is that correct?

2 things
1)You don't want to "delete" data apps & no need to root to uninstall them. Settings, apps, downloaded, select.... 2)Also the ones you mention sound like system apps?
I deleted them from the Data/App, so they would not be in my app drawer. And all of my system apps are still there, just looked.
Didn't think about disabling them, I got root happy, been to long without it, lol.

Stagefright Fix [OH1]

It appears Sprint has begun rolling out L710TVPU0AOH1 which includes a patch for stagefright.
https://community.sprint.com/baw/message/1003646#1003646
http://support.sprint.com/support/a...pdateTheSoftwareVersionOnYourSamsungGalaxy#!/
Has anyone seen this update?
Please post a link if anyone sees it.
I received the update this morning but I have not looked at the size. I did not expect Sprint to put out a patch for this old device. I expect to have to unroot the device and then re-root the device after installation. It will be a weekend project for me.
OH1 Update Zip
Can you post the Update.zip file?
Don't have the file but the update said it was 58.1 MB.
A couple of people on the Sprint community reported that it bricked their phones but it worked OK for me.

I'd love it if you wouldn't mind capturing the update.zip file and then posting it for us before you install it.
If you do get this update anyone before you install it. Please copy it from your cache file and post it here thanks.
I have the update.zip copied off to my external SD card and PC but because I'm a noob, I'm not allowed to post external links on here. Sorry.

It's in there. If you have root all you need is ES File Explorer and grant it Superuser permission. Open the options and tick Root Explorer and Show Hidden Files.

Sorry, I lost the ota update. I had some time and attempted the fix but it failed. I did restore to stock recovery. In my haste, I didn't make bkup of file. So I was waiting for it to re-download. I am not really concerned about the security exploit. I am glad someone else was able to provide the update file.

My phone downloaded the update, but when I press "Restart & install", it doesn't do anything. Is it because it is rooted? I also couldn't find the update in the cache folder, even though I gave it superuser access and have it set to show hidden files.
Is it possible to manually install the update without wiping the phone?

I would recommend flashing a stock recovery and then sideloading the ota.

You will need to have your computer set up for adb. The proper drivers and Android sdk etc. Power off the gs3 and then reboot to recovery by pressing power the bottom button and volume up at the same time. It will take a moment and then select the option to update via adb. At that point you should be able to connect to the computer via USB and from the command prompt type adb devices and have it list the serial number of your phone and say sideload next to it. I believe that the command is adb sideload filename in this case update.zip. update. Zip needs to be located in the same folder as the prompt you are working from. I am typing this from my phone, so I apologize for the formatting. You may have success by placing update. Zip in the root of an external sd card and select update from ext sd in the recovery prompts.

Does anyone know if this update will reset everything? I'm wondering if I'm going to lose my user data, apps, root, twrp....
Also, I think I know the answer to this, but just to be sure....
I believe the process that I have to follow to use the OTA update is to unroot the device (uninstall supersu?), then just run the update.zip from recovery. My guess is that I can use a custom recovery to install, but I'm not sure. I'm also assuming that it will not remove the user data and apps. After the update is finished, I would have to root the phone again, then set up all of my xposed framework options again.
Sound about right?
