Should I flash...help - Samsung Galaxy Nexus

Here's the deal. I have one of the gnex's that had the bad 4g radio and couldn't stay connected to the network logger than 10 minutes. The jb update finally came and fixed. Scared to flash custom Rom in fear old problem might return. Has anyone had one the previously faulty phone and has since flashed a custom Rom with success?

You have nothing to lose but some time if you flash something and don't like it. If the update fixed your problem, almost all custom roms will be using an android version at least equal to what you are running now (most probably newer). You can make a nandroid to restore if you find you have problems with whatever rom you flash. If you don't want to do that, you can always use the factory images posted by google and restore your phone back to the version you are using now. Updated radios probably helped more than anything in a kernel or /system (which is all most custom roms contain - I don't think I've ever seen any that contain radios for the galaxy nexus).

Now running liquid smooth. 4g still strong thanks for the info.

It's a ROM. You can find it in the Dev section if you scroll down far enough. It's based off 2.35 and looks like ics. It's stable and fast. Someone else installed it on my phone. I didn't look for a new ROM til about a week ago.

It really does depend on your preferences. If you don't want wifi calling there is not a whole lot of difference yet. It is not like the hd2 days where there were several completely different fully functional builds to choose from and several flavors of each. Things are just beginning for the SGS2.

I been using stock rooted, but every time I flash a custom rom I end up dealing with some really annoying bugs. I also hate the fact that every time I flash a custom rom I need to setup my exchange & yahoo email again and again. any easy ways of doing this with having to set up and install every single app I use? (I usually use titanium backup)

There is an easy way... just use gmail.... just joking..
I am in the same boat. I use 2 accounts on 2 different Exchange servers so I have to setup Touchdown every time I on install a new ROM. And I have 4 Android devices I use daily and have wiped each of them at least once this year.. I wish touchdown had a save configuration to sd card option..
I also have been wanting to install a custom rom on my s2 but keep hoping a 4.0 ICS will come out. I have it on my Asus Prime and Tab and would really like to try it on a phone..
Sent from my SGH-T989 using xda premium
The phone resetup does stink. The only way to know for sure that you are not causing your own bugs is to wipe flash the new rom and then re-setup the apps and accounts. I have had issues restoring my settings through titanium as well so I usually just redo it all manually. It is very disappointing when I get through that entire process only to find a bug I can't live with.
On the bright side I am really good at reentering my account settings, and I have greatly reduced the number of unused apps I have installed.

Thinking of flashing nightlies

I'm dying to run CM9 on my CDMA gnex. How do these (nightlies) work?
Sent from my Galaxy Nexus using xda premium
They are unstable roms that are constantly being worked on. The current nightly is the progress they've made so far. I haven't tried cm9 specifically, but certain features most likely don't work/ aren't included yet. I recommend reading through the change logs so u have an idea of what's going on. Just back up whatever rom you're currently on and if u flash cm9 don't forget gapps.
Sent from my Galaxy Nexus using XDA
You will need to unlock and root your phone before installing the nightlies.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1693892
Then I use ROM Manager to install the nightlies.

No ota's, you have to flash each one yourself. However, you usually don't have to wipe unless a major change is incorporated.
Ok. Would it be worth flashing iyo?

The nightlies are far from unstable - I've been a CM desciple for a looooong time on many different devices. Everything works for me. No problems what-so-ever.
I realize it's not for everyone but I strongly recommend you give it a shot. Make a nandroid and flash away.
It's worth flashing. You can use ROM manager to download and flash updates, so it's no sweat to update when you want.
Fyi if you want to download and install nightlies through ROM manager, you have to buy it.

ROM Manager can screw installations up and usually if recovery throws an error you won't see it if you flash through ROM Manager.

I agree to some extent, but if you are familiar with manually flashing, I don't see any problem with using ROM manager to flash.
I have been using it since my sgs days and never had any hiccups.

I will just echo what some others here have already said. In my experience, CM nightlies (7 and 9 on various devices) aren't unstable at all, perhaps missing some features at times, but far from unstable. Of course each device may have a different story, but I think it is definitely worth a shot.

Comparing to stock, no features are missing and many have been added. Comparing to what is planned for the "stable" release of cm9 then, yes, features are missing.
Every now and then changes get made which will break some part of the phone, but they are mostly annoyances, it's extremely rare for a nightly to break core functionality of the device but it could happen.
Been using cm since version 6, always running nighties and none of them have ever broken my phone. Sometimes things have happened like breakages to video playback for example but they get fixed pretty quick. I've always been able to do stuff like making calls, SMS and email on every nightly over five phones.

Hi , I'm currently using Lg g2x
and it seems like this phone is a good option for me right now.
i have a few question for the phone.
1. How are the driver and development support for this phone? ( both from samsung and devs)
my g2x is a pain right now because LG did not release enough drivers and we have no fully working ICS/JB and developments are dying....
2. Are there screen burn in problems?? (This was the major reason why I tried to avoid AMOLED phones)
3. what is your general opinion?
Thank you
This phone and the dev support kicks ass. I had no qualms about keeping this through the S3 cycle, and every time I think I want to upgrade, I'm reminded that this phone does everything I want it to do.

I'm in Canada as well(however with Wind Mobile) and so far the stock koodo or Telus radio suits the best(most reliable, no data drops, etc). You may try different radios from the thread below to see if any of those works better for you with your provider. The stock koodo is there too if you wanna go back to that.
Radios in general affect the mobile signal, data connection and wifi signal. On a side note, the Telus Jellybean release is just around the corner for our device (April), we will see how is the bundled radio performs once it drops.

Flashing a custom rom(unless stated otherwise by the rom developer) won't touch your radio. So in theory your signal and other radio characteristics will remain the same. However based on the feedback in the radio thread some radio performs better for some user depending on their location(most of them are US based Tmobile customer). So it's about trial and error, try them and see if you have better results with different ones (signal, ping, download/upload, voice quality, battery life).
For Wind mobile here in my location (Ottawa) the koodo radio is the champ.

4th time I had to factory restore. This is unbelievable.

Had my N72013 for 2 weeks now, and it boot loop'd four times on me twice in one day.
This can't be only happening to me.
I ordered from Google (big mistake), their rep said they can send me a new model but I would have to pay for it (dock the amount) first then once I receive it, send in my current model then wait to get my $$$ back.
Is this an issue with 4.3 or the device. I really don't want to return it if this problem could be patched away with an update...
Forgot to mention, I'm unlocked and rooted. 32gigs. No dead pixels, minor light bleed that doesn't bother me at all.

Yea I don't know why its boot looping either. Maybe your factory images are corrupt and thus you keep restoring a bad image. Perhaps you have a bad sector in your memory.
You could test it by flashing a non-stock rom, such as CM10.2 which also uses a CM kernel.
Use it for a few days and See if the problem goes away or stays.
Either way, reflash stock using the Google Nexus 7 images. If the problem stays, then take it back. If it fixes it, then keep it.

I wouldn't bother to unlock and root. The N7 is flawless and fast out of the box.

Again, root access is required for most decent backup programs and cloud data syncing apps. The issue doesn't require a debate about whether you need root or not. Yes the N7 is wicked fast and if you only use it as a bathroom reader for Facebook and light use, then that's cool. I like OTG support for my thumb drives when I'm in the field working.
Glad CM is working for you. That at least shows it isn't a hardware problem. I'd reflash stock images and see where that leaves you. Worse case you use CM (oh my!) until we see a patch.
It sounds like it just has a corrupted stock image. Kernels typically cause the reboots but a bad app or system file can too.
If you flash stock back and you still have issues, try just flashing a modified stock kernel (stock rom/custom stock kernel). CM has its own kernel which might be why it was working better.
You also should do a complete wipe between stock and CM and AOSP and vice versa. It typically bootloops if you dirty flash one type of rom over another. Stock and AOSP are pretty much the same thing but some custom ROMs like CM have different structures that hose you.

I do not understand the hassle with Google.
I told them yesterday to get a new device, as wireless charging does not work. I talked max 10 minutes on the phone and I received an email 2 minutes after saying that I'll get a new device.
Yes, they will charge you "temporarily" for this, but you do not have to pay anything.
Anyway, it's me, I found it easy with Google.
Mine bootlooped today. Stock. No root or anything. I was forced to do a factory reset from recovery. Very troubling that this seems to be happening to a few people. There's a couple of threads over on android central of people having the same problem.

Super glad its worked. It worked for me. It worked for another guy. And worked for you. I think there is a bad rom image flashed on all of these that are causing lots of problems. The only fix is to clean slate and reflash the stock image, or move to custom ROMs.
Probably need to get someone to write a little app that just automates flashing the stock image again just for simplicity.
I'll probably create a new thread covering this.

The stock images and the install script .bat file is simple enough.
Especially if you're rooted already. Since you already have the drivers installed on your computer.
Toolkits need to die a slow painful death.
You need root access a pen drive using an OTG cable, install app like titanium backup etc. Rooting doesn't mean custom rom or kernel
