Trying to get the word out here for all who have been affected by their defective glass breaking.
I want to mention that I am NOT the creator of this petition I am nearly passing information on after I found it during a Google search.

I haven't had an issue with broken glass. I've even dropped my Galaxy S from above pocket height on concrete without glass breaking. I do not expect my Galaxy S3 would fair as well. I was happy to sign your petition and here is what I wrote in the comments:
"Shouldn't even be called "Gorilla Glass" if it breaks this easily. A phone this expensive should have a more durable design, it should at least be able to withstand a drop from "pocket" height a few times before the glass breaks. The warranty should be improved, or, the repair should be dropped below $50."
I very seriously doubt thst even if every GS3 owner signed, they would do anything for us.
My hope is that they will at least take this into consideration for future devices.

You may be right but it NEVER hurts to try and who knows, like everything else in this day and age, if it gets enough attention of the "press" we may be in business to pressure the Korean Giant to do something about it!!
I don't consider it defective if it breaks on a drop, I consider it a fragile design.
What I do consider defective, is the habit of the displays to have black pixels visible if you have a black background w/ nothing on it and a very dark room. That however, seems to be an accepted fact of these displays....by several forum posters and Samsung.

Let's say a defective design. MOBILE phones should be designed to hold up to the harsh environments they are produced to work in. That is environments that are ever changing, MOVEMENT, unlike for example an old corded phone where you are mostly stationary and it is not required to take out of your pocket... Engineers should be thinking of durability rather then how elegant or lightweight they can make it. The Iphone 5 (pains me to say this) takes a sh*t load of abuse and holds up extremely well. Samsung could not have taken durability into the equation when making this phone and I am sure they have their own drop test in the labs... I think they should be ashamed of themselves and I believe it is highway robbery what they have done to the supporters of their product.

I'm just glad that my phone hasn't taken any damage...even after dropping it and Milky Way slamming into an open dresser drawer and than dangling by the USB cable plugged into my computer. No case. If it had hit a corner instead of the business end...well, fml!

Does this include scratching? I normally take really good care of my phones and even in doing so I have two hairline scratches which I have no idea how they even got there. I hate screen protectors and now I'm forced to use one just to cover the scratches

Well Gorilla Glass is supposed to reduce scratching but this petition is for breaking only. You can still help out the cause and sign it. :laugh:
Gorilla Glass is only scratch resistent. What we need is a glass that's like Vibranium. And twice as cool as in a shield.
Glass breaks, it's a fact. Gorilla Glass only protects against scratches. And Obama doesn't care about your phone.

I personally don't blame the glass. I blame the bezel. If you look closely at your phone you will notice that the screen is slightly raised from the edges. This causes corner and edge drops to impact on the edge of the glass(weakest point for any type of glass) whereas other device the screen is in a little from the bezel. So when dropped the bezel curls and affects the surface of the glass(much stronger than the edge) that's why they break so easily.

Back on topic, I'm signing for sure.
Guys, a few things I would like to comment on. Firstly I am a "veteran" corporate frontline T-Mobile employee. I usually sell the highest volume phones in my store and sometimes my region, and as the S3 being my third most phone that I sell, I can tell you that I personally have only returned two devices for defects and none thus far for cracked LCD's (including insurance claims). Now that is not saying obviously that it doesn’t happen, I’m just saying that I PERSONALLY have not seen it.
Secondly, these phones have built-in impact zones that Samsung engineered into them. lol, how they work is beyond me, so I won't pretend I understand, I just know they are there in the event of a drop to reduce the impulse felt by the device and its inerts.
Also, I personally have dropped my S3 at least seven times with which half of those times were on concrete. I also do not use any kind of case nor do I have screen protectors on it. It is Au Naturale! Knock on wood, my phone doesn’t even have a scratch on it.
edit: Not tryig to sound like a narcissist, but giving you background info to show you that I come across and move a lot of these devices on a daily basis.
You better knock hard lol... I promise you I dropped my phone from less then 12 inches and it shattered. Again it's not the glass it is the frame that gives way and pushes into the glass, then the glass has nowhere to go but to fracture. It is the most vulnerable area of the glass. Thanks for sharing.

got my phone on the day it came out. loving my SGS2, had my phone in my pocket , took it out to text and i see a hairline crack on the top of the screen. i dont know what the hell happened but my screen is cracked. i do have insurance but since i just got the phone can i return to tmobile and get a new 1 .some1 any1 help on what i can do.

You can't return a damaged phone. You'll have to go through insurance to exchange it and pay the deductible.. you might get them to sympathize if it has NO other damage but I'd doubt it.

I'm not 100% sure though.
I've seen specs in numerous places that state we have gorilla glass. It feels like gorilla glass, I just came from a defy.
I've dropped my defy from 5 feet and it has sustained zero damage to the screen. I've also seen a defy slide off a lap at 3 feet and shatter.
Every piece of glass has its sweet spot. I'm sorry about your screen. It's unlikely that they'll replace it, you'll probably have to use insurance already.

i disagree
there are simply waaaaay to many simple ways to break the screen inside the pocket without one knowing.
it happened to me with many many different phones
since then i learned a screen protector is a must, and a hard case shell is a must
since i started that practice, i've not had another repeat of those broken screen incidents
Take a look to see if the LCD cracked our the gorilla glass. They're two separate pieces. Also if you purchased it at a corporate store it wouldn't hurt to take it in.
You can also try calling cust service and see what they suggest.

The phone is too big to go in your pocket ,cause when you sit down you are putting pressure on the thin phone and sometime the plastic flex a little will crack the glass. Not like HTC where they have metal in the back . Samsung Phones are allways built like toys.thats the reason why I don't like Samsuk.

Talked to a buddy that works for TMO corporate and he said there is a known problem on some builds of the gs2 where the LCD will have a hairline crack that will show up on it's own. In other words faulty LCD's straight from the factory. If you talk to customer care or a store they should switch it out under warranty. If they question you tell them to look in their internal system under "Known Issues" for the device. On another note he said that's the only major issue they have noted.

I had the Amaze for two days, and in those two days it froze on me 6 times to where I had to pull the battery and got the unexpected shutdown do you want to notify HTC message.
Six f*****g times!
On top of that, the phone was Laggy as s**t when opening the application drawer or playing 720p videos off the SD.
I'm glad I came back to the SGS2! Otherwise, I never would have known what I'd be missing out on right now if I'd stuck with the Amaze instead of carefully selecting a new SGS2 with no defects.

Definitely a legit issue. To see if is still under warranty, you need to ensure the crack stops when the screen stops. That means the crack shouldn't be on the black glass area that shows the front camera and the sensors.
Sorry to bring this one up from the dead but I am researching an issue on the SAMSUNG Galaxy Nexus where out of nowhere, I have a hairline crack under the topsheet of glass but not affecting the actual display as when looking right at the phone (like I usually do), I don't see it.
For the record, I don't wear skinny jeans. (which are ridiculous for guys).
The crack starts up top about a 1/4 off the left edge and goes diagonally down to the right and is about 1/3 from the top. Sounds like others with the SGN have the same thing.

I'm sorry for your crack. I've had a previous Winmo phone in my pocket, and remember a wrench gently dropping in my lap. Screen shattered. Remember there is flex in your pocket as well.
Incidentally. Have a new Motorolla Cliq2 with T-Mobile wifi calling I'll trade anyone with a SGS2 or similar that is either bricked or screen cracked.

Ok, I just bought a Samsung Galaxy S III 12 days ago. I have had may phones and NEVER had any physical damage. I dropped it from about 2 ft. The phone landed flat on its back and the phone is DESTROYED! The glass shattered in the top left and bottom right corners and there is cracks from corner to corner. The actual screen doesn't display, the back light is broken and even the Bluetooth module is acting up (now cuts in and out). I feel like the phone should have survived the fall and upon quick searches am finding lots of ppl with screen cracking easily. I called sprint and Samsung and neither would assist. I mentioned all of the reports online and they acted like they never heard of any issues. There are reports of others sliding out of their pockets while laying on the ground(looking under car) and falling a few inches and shattering. So I want to attempt to round the guys up on this one- anyone who is having issues with the SGS3 screen cracking or overall weak please post their experience here. Mine did not even have any scratches from the fall or signs of physical damage. After I talked to sprint and samsung the phone took some additional "falls" but I am posting a pic. The upper left and bottom right spiderwebs are the original damage.

I dropped my phone one time. I hope I never do it again and feel sorry for anyone who does do it.
Gorilla GLASS. Its not shatter proof. Its scratch resistant. Think about how thin the phone is? How the screen goes right to the bezel? How the glass is curved? The phone itself doesn't offer much protection between ground and glass when dropped.
Drop a glass cup from 2 feet, sometimes you'll get lucky and it not break or crack but chances are it'll crack or shatter.

I had my phone in my lap and dropped the phone when I got out of the car onto the concrete floor.i almost had a heart attack. But to my surprise it did not break. I have a TPU case protecting it. Guess I was lucky this time.
I know this might sound harsh but its probably what most people are thinking...... put a case on it. Its an investment and you should always protect your investments

I have a blue one and I dropped it onto asphalt from 3-4 feet and not one crack or ding. Incipio case and a screen protector saved the day.

that story wont work. youre better off being good on the phone and hoping htey hook it up than tryign to tell them that something is wrong with yoru galaxy and it explodes when dropped.
buying and owning a phone:
1. choose, buy, pay for, acquire phone.
2. open box and remove from packaging.
3. PUT A NICE ASS SCREEN PROTECTOR (roughly invisishield quality) ON PHONE
4. PUT A ****ING CASE ON IT
5. havinjg done the most obvious things to do, consider putting money in a green mutual fund.
that nice screen protector is so key. someting a few mils thick to not only prevent scratches but absorb impact.

From light scratches yes. But not if you take keys or something similar and scratch it like your cutting a steak.
Thing about glass you have to have something harder then the glass to scratch it. Hence why diamonds scratch just about anything.

ok douchwad- do you think this is my first phone ever? Do you think im 12 y. o.? I have many phones- never have i seen the entire phone get destroyed when it lands flat on its back in the grass. I feel like there is possibly a manufacturing issue since a quick google search yeilds several ppl saying close to the same thing. You can believe that I chucked my phone across the room or that I spiked it on concrete or whatever. Bottom line I dont need to hear from a**bags that want to doubt what happened or explain that glass cracks. I want to hear from others that have had similar issues.
I feel like if a small fall is going to destroy a phone there should at least be a scratch on the surface that if fell on. I could understand a cracked screen but damage to this extent is a bit excessive for a fall in grass! There are reports of others screens getting cracked by pushing the power button! So if you want to call me a liar or whatever then please just keep it to yourself and move to the next forum.

Agreed. Original Gorilla Glass was a much better product. Last phone was a year old. No case or screen protector, always in a pocket with keys and change, my clumsy ass dropped it all the time. It never had a scratch, the bezel was basically destroyed from dropping though. It finally met its match when it found the corner of a poured concrete step.
My first day with this phone it got a deep scratch in my pocket. Back to a case and screen protector... At least the black and white ballistic case looks awesome.

People can complain all they want about gorilla glass but it's still glass and should be treated as such. Maybe some King Kong glass is what people need.
If I understand correctly (and it is possible that I do not) you dropped a phone, that was in a case, two feet into the grass and this is the damage that occurred?
No offense but you are asking people to suspend disbelief to a rather illogical level.

Is it normal to have a small crack spread down the entire phone? Last week I had my keys and nexus in the same pocket and the keys caused a small scratch. After using it since, the pressure from use caused the scratch to turn into nasty looking crack, similar to a chipped windshield. Is this normal for this phone or do I have a defective unit? Never been dropped or abuse but I don't feel like I should have to pay to have it fixed, seems cheaply made. I do have insurance through Verizon.
Can anyone enlighten me? Thanks!
How serious was this scratch? I haven't had any issues with my screen. As for a crack spreading it is glass and cracks do spread. Just like a windshield they grow if not treated

its hairline but noticeable. it starts from the edge of the earpiece down and slightly right. no drop marks or signs of abuse so hopefully they'll swap me out.

From my experience cracked screens usually never fall under the manufacturer's defect umbrella. Obviously it wouldn't hurt to try to get Verizon to replace it under the manufacturer's defect warranty but I wouldn't get my hopes up if I was you. At least you have the insurance to fall back on even if they don't cover it.
I know my brother dropped his iPhone 4 right after it came out and cracked the screen but was able to take it into an Apple store and exchange it for a new one. He told them he was cleaning the screen with his finger/micro fiber cloth, pressing down pretty hard and it just cracked. He ended up walking out of the store with a brand new iPhone, didn't have to haggle with the employee at all.
And to answer your question as whether or not it is normal for a small crack to spread all the way across the screen, yes it is. Like you mentioned, it is just like the windshield in your car. The crack is going to spread taking the path of least resistance until it hits an edge (whether it be the edge of the glass or the edge of another crack) and then stop.
go get a screen protector. One of my screens is a spider web but the protector helps alot

I've NEVER dropped any of my phones, ever, as long as I've had cell phones. Well, dropped and it actually hit the ground. I've dropped this damn phone like 4x already, I think partially to do with it being so smooth and "slippery" to the hand.
Anyway, I dropped it once from about 6 feet in the air directly on the screen and NOTHING happened at all (except some very very minor dings to the frame itself) and light scratches to the screen protector. Today, I was trying to pull it out of my pocket at work when it slipped and fell (from about 2 feet from the ground) landing on the right side of the phone. My right hand (phone sits in right pocket) is in a brace due to a stress fracture I received at work, so when it slipped I couldn't catch it. I watched it fall, which was the worst moment ever lol. Since my work pants have slanted pockets, it fell behind me so I couldn't even attempt to put my foot under it to stop the impact.
Anyway, as I picked it up I honestly didn't expect to see anything. I pick it up, turn it over and it looks like there is a piece of hair right along the frame in the shape of a sideways "U". I went to brush it off and realized it had cracked!
It's a very small and almost non noticeable crack JUST before the digitalizer starts but I know it's there so it bothers me. I showed a few guys at work and nobody noticed it until I pointed it out.
Anyway, think its worth looking into getting fixed or just stick it out because it's so minor?
*sorry picture is so crappy, wife has a Lumia 710...camera sucks.

id personally get it fixed or fix it myself since only the screen and not the lcd. imagine if you ever drop it again even inches that "u" could probably be the cause of it expanding and cracking all over. well thats my opinion

I have to agree though, if its doable for you, get it fixed. Once compromised like that its just gonna get worse most likely. Even just setting it down or bumping into something while its in your pocket could make it much worse.

I would say slap it into a bumper that will cover up most of it. But, you already said you know it's there, so that won't work. So, I guess I'd advise having it fixed.

Why mine is in an otter box ^-^
But I personally would just throw a case on it to prevent further cracking. Doesn't look too horrible from your picture. But as others already mentioned, it will crack even more easily since it's already started.
That's a known issue with the s 3. The screen is lifted a hair from the bezel. So the bezel bends into the glass at the edge (weakest point in glass) where other devices usually bend over the glass.

Yeah it's not bad at all. And remember you can replace just the glass too. But i would wait for it to be more messed up before doing that

Slap a good case on it and it should be fine for now at least.
Let's just hope that you don't drop it again to further increase the cracking.
An OtterBox Defender Case might be a good idea.
Very bulky, kind of pricey, but it will offer you the protection that you need.
Personally id be worried about further damage as is. Obviously the glass is weakened already, and while it may seem ok to wait until its worse before fixing, i have to disagree as im pretty sure this also makes the digitizer more vulnerable to damage as well.
How often have you seen or heard about devices that had a cracked screen causing the touch capabilities to break as well? One more drop or bump into the corner of a table where that crack is and you may not get anymore response at all.
I just think it potentially could turn into a much more expensive repair if not taken care of soon. Just not sure id personally want to risk it.
Its just my opinion is all.

red you could just take it to tmo? or call Samsung it has to be under warranty but hey they'll do it and no screws up guaranteed. ad it will cost more than a do it your self. i saw somewhere that Verizon did for 100 with insurance, i assume tmo would close to that
Radio Shack has a service to replace your screen for $100. You would be without your phone for a couple of days, however.
I highly recommend the Otterbox Defender, and put all of my phones in one.
In March, while doing some climbing, I fell about 30 ft then tumbled down the side of a mountain. I had a Droid X in my pocket (in it's Defender), and the only damage to the phone was to the camera lens. Everything else about the phone was groovy. I was not in such great shape, as this was in the Arizona desert mountains, so there was no cushy landing whatsoever.

Sorry, i guess i just assumed we were talking about going by one of the diy guides i saw here not long ago. Pretty sure they had instructions for replacing only the glass, but anyway, if you have the full protection plan then it doesnt matter how bad its damaged. I believe the price about a month ago was $130.

we were but then i thought what if red messed up something by accident like we all might, wouldn't that void his warranty? if it didnt then im all in for diy, thats the only reason i said the tmo thing for safety measure. also red looked it up on ebay blue one with tools was 28 dollars and from usa.
Ok, i gotcha. I could be wrong but if you have the full protection plan i was under the impression that you could pretty much do anything and get a replacement. So if im right you can attempt the fix diy style and if unsuccessful then get it replaced. I would double check me on that though!

Yeah, I was considering the DIY route (its like $25 on eBay but you have to break your screen off basically which scares the sh*t out of me).
I do have the full insurance. I may have to go to T-Mobile just to see how much it would cost. I don't have the extra money, just got my car out of the shop. If anything, if the insurance covers it and isn't very much, I could just tough it out until it gets worse (if it does) and THEN take it in to the store for work.

So i dropped my phone from 3 feet and the screen spider ed crack everywhere i called samsung to get it replaced they wanted $180 to replace the screen, well i so call remembering that gorilla glass is supposed to be drop resistant as advertised on gorilla website and Samsung website (samsung removed it from saying its drop resistant)
also went to the att store and when you have insurance on your smart phone its a $200 deductible WTF
So anyways i linked samsung to gorilla glass website where it says its drop resistant and they claim thats not good enough, well than i showed them the website where the petition shows with the signature where everyone has sign stating that Samsung in fact changed there website from displaying drop resistant im pretty piss i think Samsung should pay for the labor since it is there design flaw or have some kind of solution to fix the screen from dropping from so little of a height. I WILL NOT BUY ANOTHER SAMSUNG AGAIN thanks for backing up your product atlease apple fixes there ****.

Samsung wont even investagate the issue at all. they simple do not care about us americans
Legally, drop and scratch resistant is not drop or scratch proof. A bleeding heart judge or authority figure may allow suit or coverage of damages, but they have every right not to. It's not a design flaw. Glass, in general, will break and scratch.

I'm deciding what to do with my 4 year old Samsung plasma that refuses to turn on, just clicks. I definitely won't buy another Samsung tv but God do I love there phones!

phones are great but the warrenty are crap apple replaces the phone the first time for free if you crack there glass samsung offers nothing but a $180 charge to fix the device and att wants $200
My S III was standing on its side and fell face flat on to even brick... the screen cracked. I sent it to Samsung for repair, got a case and screen protector... lesson learned.

oh wow, that is a screwup on their part, advertising that glass is drop resistant. I mean but it is being advertised... ive dropped mine several times and no breakage yet.

i had the same problem with my Samsung LCD tv... over several months the clicking got worse and worse until it wouldn't turn on. look on youtube or do a google search, but if it's the same problem i had, the fix is easy.
a trip to Radio Shack and about 5$ in new capacitors is all it took. removed the back of the TV and replaced the old/blown/leaky capacitors. took about 15 minutes total and saved me from buying a new TV... (damnit, i wanted an excuse!)
anyway, sorry for jacking this thread; i know it's not for TVs...just wanted to help a fellow XDAer out if possible.

You would most likely easily win a small claims court settlement against them.. The petition will do no good.
Could sue for cost of repair, and additional cost of not having phone etc for time it takes to repair.

With a phone like the same you need a case since it has a glass panel over the entire front going down the sides a bit too. This of course is going to crack if dropped without a case that does not have a raised face . I have had my s3 thrown across a room and I have no scratches or cracks...about 10ft onto concrete floor of home depot. And it is fine. Now on other devices I have owned you kinda do not need a case because of how the glass is set up. And like someone had said before it is resistant not proof. Depends on how it falls and unfortunately how it is designed it is slightly more prone to happen.

You guys must if gotten faulty glass or something. I have had two major drops and although other parts of the phone became damaged, my glass had survived mostly. First time I left my phone on the roof of my car and drove away, only to have it fly off my roof, down my windshield and skidding across the pavement when I came to a stop. The back cover came flying off and I had to replace the battery because it was badly scratched and thought it might leak. The back of the phone was scratched badly, but there was only one hardly noticeable scratch to the glass. The second time, my little nephew decided to throw my phone down the stairs, causing my phone to break into pieces. The glass did crack, but not like yours. Just on the edges there were cracks where the body of the phone meets the glass. I was impressed with the glass, but maybe it was just how the phone landed. Unfortunately the rest of the phone didn't survive. I was impressed with the durability of the phone that I bought a new one. My wife has iphone 4, and her front glass is in tack but looks shattered from dropping it off of the nightstand. Mine is a Canadian S3 so maybe that makes a difference. I bought a case for my new phone since I seem to abuse my phones so often. I feel sorry for you guys that your screen cracked so easily.

I feel the same way.... that there may be a lot of S3's with faulty glass. The drop test videos prove the glass to be very strong. Perhaps overheated or somehow made brittle. Perhaps hairline cracks introduced during manufacture. My son pulled his S3 out of his hoodie pocket and the screen was shattered. He didn't even drop it. This definitely fits the definition of manufacturer defect. The problem is that everyone knows a glass screen has the potential to break when you drop the phone. How do you prove it one way or the other?
Don't look for Samsung to stand behind their product. The didn't do anything except deny the GPS problems on the Captivate. They didn't do anything about the high failure rate of the power button either. My friend had a 42" Samsung LCD TV that died after a couple years with a very common problem for that model. They refused to make things right for these people either.

Check for failed capacitors, they are usually the culprit of electronics failing.
