AT&T iPhone 4S ---> Note II, without changing data plan? - AT&T Samsung Galaxy Note II

I want to switch from an iPhone 4S to the note II (international or at&t) by swapping sim cards. Can this be done with data working? I tried it with a galaxy sII skyrocket LTE, and data did not work at all. I expected at least 3G and HSDPA+.
Talked to AT&T and they said I have to change the data plan. But google searches have revealed that I should be able to switch without calling them and at least get 3G/HSDPA data.
Anyone have any insight?

you can get 3g but you won't get lte since the 4S isn't LTE. You just need the correct APNs. Try wap.cingular, or phone. I stopped changing my plan cause I switched too often and hated all the stupid prorations

I'm not understanding your goal. I had an unlimited data plan for my iPhone $30/mo. When I upgraded my phone to SGN2, I now have the data plan for LTE unlimited at $30/mo as a grandfathered data plan.
Of couse this plan is acually throttled now (after 5GB?), but it is, what it is. Same Family phone plan, same price, similar data plan, same price.

I need to do it without changing the plan. I think we have the answer though... change the APN. I will update when I get a chance to try it,

Changing the APN worked. Got HSDPA+. AT&T lied to me, not suprisingly.
Guess I might as well buy the international note II, since I wont be using LTE, unless there is some other advantage to the AT&T note II?

Not really. Just an fyi, if you switch off ios make sure to turn off I message or your friends will see blue before green

also even though u are on an unlimited plan my understanding is they will throttle u after a certain ammount.

If it was my money, I wouldn't be using AT&T.

As you've already experienced, AT&T reps are under no obligation to tell you the truth, time and time again. I've swapped my sim between many 3g phones with nary a phone call over the years.
I think the only advantage to getting an AT&T Note 2 is when you migrate to an unlimited LTE plan, you get throttled at 5 gigs instead of 3.
Otherwise, stick with what ya got and stick it to the man!

Not sure if my work around means much to you... but I had a iPhone 4S and got into a Note II and was able to keep my Grandfathered Data plan.
How I did it...
My phone being a 4S was not eligible for an upgrade but my wife's iPhone 4 was. So I used her upgrade to get the Note II and had AT&T do a crossover on the lines. So now my wife has my 4S and I have the Note 2 with the same data packages.
The downside at first was the swap caused our texting plans to dissolve, but in the end AT&T was able to offer me a better deal with unlimited texting and cell calls for $20 less a month. Not sure if it was just the tech guy who was able to swing the offer as they have a bit more power to make the customer happy over sales.
I had found out I had no texting after the fact and support hooked me up with all sorts of goodies and was the one who highlighted how I could save some cash.

Reps like to lie. They can't force you off the grandfathered data... I just upgraded again and kept my data No need to jump through hoops. Just double check after they are done .

I also was able to keep my unlimited data plan from my iPhone when I upgraded to the Note 2 (which will be here tomorrow, woot!).

I don't understand why AT&T doesn't just declare an end to grandfathered unlimited data, rather than officially continuing to support it while often denying it unless the customer puts up a fight. Is AT&T legally forced for some reason to continue the grandfathered plans?

Well once you sign a contract I don't think they can change your plan without giving you an early out option. When you aren't under contract anymore I guess they figure you may leave if they don't let you keep it so they grandfather you into another two years with unlimited data...just a guess and I could be wrong.

I have transferred my AT&T Unlimited Data Plan from several phones. Sometimes I was told I could not keep the unlimited plan if I wanted LTE, but I asked to speak with a supervisor and it always got resolved. Most recently I transferred my SIM card from an international Galaxy S3 to the Galaxy Note 2 (AT&T version) and beforehand checked to be sure I could keep my unlimited data plan. I was and the transfer was uneventful and everything continues to work great.

I did exactly what you want with no problems. You probably just talked to a bad representative.

Thank-you to all of you who shared your experience. I can hardly control my urge to dump my iPhone 4S in favor of the Note II. Obviously, I am in the same boat like many of you. I was thinking about the wife-phone-switcheroo but she got her phone just about a year ago... I'll keep an eye on this thread an share my experience whenever I made the move!

I made this exact switch, and had zero problems whatsoever. In fact, my eyes widened when the rep told me that I would keep my unlimited plan, and she laughed and told me that that is the policy. I thought for sure that I was going to lose it.

[Q] Verizon users - Can you swap SIMs between GNxs and other VZ LTE phones?

I have a TBolt, but thinking bout switching when my upgrade eligibility comes soon. I want to know if you can swap SIMs back and forth like you can with a GSM phone. Reason is if I were changing ROMs or some other stuff and I don't want to miss calls.
No galaxy nexus uses the tiny micro sim. Unless of course the tbolt also uses the micro similar card. The is a absolute maybe...?
K. But if I upgrade can I still keep my unlimited data even when switching to the microsim ( Imean the galaxy nexus)?
Thunderbolt uses a full size SIM.

you can switch phones all you want & even renew your contract all you want also... and yes, you will keep your unlimited. the only time you'll lose it is if you terminate service.
For grandfathered unlimited data verizon customers, does verizon cap/throttle? If so what is the cap set at?

yeah, as the fellow above stated, they only care if you use too much 3g.
i personally average 50gb/month and have gone as high as 100gb before and never got throttled or received any sort of warning.

from iPhone 4S unlimited data sim to S3 no 4G LTE

hi guys! i recently purchase a slightly used S3 i747 originally att. i came from an iphone 4S and still have my iphone unlimited data plan. i have noticed that im only getting 3g and h speeds. how do i get the 4g lte speeds? do i need to call att CS to get my plan changed or do i just change my apn setttings? Im rooted and has ktoonz rom. also noticed that i have the correct apn settings. tried to choose 4G LTE but i dont get data when i select it.
Thanks in advance.
not to sound condescending, but
1.) check imei (in the dialer *#06#) to ensure it is valid
2.) looks like you are in Montaray, there is no LTE coverage there per AT&T's map. doesnt look too far away though.
hope this helps
You might not be able to get LTE without a new sim card. I was reading somewhere that the iPhone sims don't work properly with LTE and will only allow HSPA+. I forget where I read this, so I could be wrong.
Sounds like a SIM problem, plus not being in an LTE area. I came from an iPhone 4 and had to change SIM's for the Note but asked to keep the microSIM in case I wanted to go back.
You need to get your plan changed. Call AT&T. You do NOT have to loose your unlimted though. I did the same thing, and got no 4g until I did that ( assuming it's in your area at all ).
I switched from a GS2 (3G) to a GS3 and all I had to do was walk into an AT&T store to tell them my situation. They set me up free of charge with my "unlimited" grandfathered data plan. Note: you can use up to 5gb before getting throttled by At&t with the updated 4g plan!

This guy has it. Be sure to thank him. ATT can differentiate speeds based on your plan, and the iphone has no LTE so they aren't allowed access to the network.
What everyone said is correct. I work for an AT&T so I deal with the same stuff. First off check if you have LTE coverage in your area. Most areas are still red for LTE. Nearest to me is Baton Rouge in Louisiana. I got 60MB/S while on it compaired to an Iphone who got 4 hahahaha .
Second check AT&T and see if your IMEI is set to the s3. If you still have the iphone imei on your account iphone data is only 3g.
Third (optional) replace your sim card. Most sim cards right now are 3g and aren't compatible with the LTE network. Sim cards are like a penny to replace at a corporate AT&T.
Hope this helps and goodluck. I hope you guys get a taste of the LTE network its sickening. Everything loads soo fast.
What was said earlier above also is true. Your unlimited data stays with you. Don't let someone tell you else wise. Once you lose unlimited data you can not get it back. I had a customer accidentally get rid of theirs and it was HELL to get it back for them and countless arguments on customer support.

Good to hear it, OP. And yep, I had the same issue coming from a 4S to the S3 and the advice above is correct. I'm still a grandfathered unlimited user (although I don't have LTE in my area yet). BTW, the best thing about this? What TBayTom noted...that you now get a 5gb cap since you're on a LTE plan (as opposed to 3gb if you're not). :good:

ATT GS3 requires data plan?

hey guys i got my GS3 about 3 months ago on ATT and im looking to get the NOTE 2 unlocked...i have my own plan on ATT and my family has a family plan on ATT but not using data/paying..im going to give my GS3 to them when i get the note 2..
do GS3 on ATT require data plans if i give it to them? i remember i gave my ATT iphone 3GS on my lil sis and i forgot that ATT will detect it and add a data plan..not sure if ATT will do the same if i give my GS3 to my family..
thanks
It most certainly will. The moment the SIM is registered on the network, AT&T, in their omniscience, will add the 30$ 3 gb / mo data plan...without consent. Their used to be a loophole with some old blackberries, but that has since been filled with gummy evils ported directly from the Death Star. Good luck.

Unlock will not solve problem. I try this on my phone.
About data you need to call and tell att you want to keep your data. Also if you have old sim card you need new one to phone receive data.( applay to iphone4/4gs sims too)
You don't necessarily need a new SIM, LTE capable SIM cards are backward compatible, but 3G Sims do not work in 4g LTE devices. As for your unlimited, he's right, you must call ATT and have them manually add it. While they cannot force migrate you, they will certainly claim an inability to readd it back on once they change it away. Don't let them fool you, they are more than capable to add it back on the account if they can ascertain the presence of the unlimited data plan prior to a device change. Just be diligent and you will get it back. DO NOT ALLOW ANYONE TO CONVINCE YOU TO MIGRATE! The moment you consent to the change, they will not, under any circumstances, put it back.

They will take the plan off if you use no data but whoever has the phone will have to contact att every month because att will just tack the plan back on
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I747 using xda premium
The only other way to do this is to take data off completely on that line. I have kids and we have unlimited text, so I called ATT and had them remove data completely from their lines. They had phones that did not require data. They cannot get pictures texted to them, otherwise they can call and text all they want and I dont have to worry about them killing me on data. I have swapped one kid to a SG1 I got from a friend and they did not do anything with data, if you say this is a minor and I want data off, its off. They use wifi if at home or school and they are fine. I do not think there is any other way you can get away with this.
Forgot to mention that my Lil sis is using a GS1 with no data plan I remember they went to att and got it to that set up and they got hooked up from the att manger... So if I give my gs3 to my sis they will still have to call and let att know that she's using a gs3 and keep the same plan she has with no data.. I believe her plan has 600mins/5000 nights weekend with unlimited text with mms /talk unlimited mobile to mobile..
As for me is just straight up put my 4G LTE att sim on my note 2 and put the lte apn settings and good to go?
Thanks guys :highfive:

Can't get LTE to work on Bell

I got the SIM card replaced this weekend ... APN settings are OK ... LTE enabled in Settings --> More --> Mobile networks --> Network mode.
It's not a question of coverage as my GF's iPhone 5 gets full LTE whereas mine says H+ when placed next to one another.
Only thing I did to the phone is to root it via the "No tripping flash counter" method and have TWRP recovery installed.
Any hint ??
do you have a LTE sim card?

Yes!
I had one, the tech at the Bell store replaced it with a new one just in case it was defective... still no LTE.
I know may be silly, but my two cents, is your plan LTE enabled? certain plans with data are note "LTE" ready.. at least that goes for my Fido network.
True that I'm on some grandfathered plan... I'll probably have to check this out.
I'll wait for JB to come out first as I want to return the phone to a totally stock state first.
I'll do some further testing on a stock ROM.
When you have eliminated the impossible, whatever remains, however improbable, must be the truth!

^^^this. if your plan is a bit older it is more than likley not LTE ready. I had to change my plan on rogers when I got my S3, update to LTE..didnt cost me anything extra but I upgraded the plan anyway.
how old is your grandfathered plan? anything more than a couple years and that is more than likely your issue.
Wasn't silly at all after all!
Just got off the phone with, first a tech and then retention...
The tech confirmed to me that my good ol' unlimited data plan is, as expected, not LTE ready. héhéhé
She proposed to transfer me to customer service, which I denied and asked to be transfered to retention instead.
The retention guy gave me the 6Go/month for 30$ promo that's not available anymore without having to argue with him.
All in all, good service ... too bad I lost my unlimited data plan, but 6Go/month is more than enough for me.

If you had any other data plan I was gonna say you could just ask the tech rep to add the lte provisioning code to your account and you'd be good to go.
The problem you actually would have encountered if you did that though is that no unlimited data plans (consumer or corporate) are able to be provisioned with lte. 6gb is the best plan out for you with lte though, hope its worth it. Personally I'd take unlimited.
Didn't know they could add the provisioning code to make the plan LTE enabled on an individual basis but, then again, I'm happy with the 6Gb plan.
By the contract terms, I couldn't tether the unlimited data plan whereas I can with the 6Gb one ... and I need to tether quite often!
You sure its not Telus, Bell sucky LTE Coverage? I live in Toronto, I just bought the Gs3 I get Lte downtown but as soon as i'm in the Weston rd and finch only 4g....at work in Dairy Rd and 427 only 4g I hardly ever see LTE icon....so disappointing as speeds are amazing on LTE but I never see them.

So if you have the 4G unlimited you wont get throttled but if you get lets say the 2gig data plan and go over you will right?
im getting T-Mobile since ATT rapes you with data charges and stuff.

i wouldnt mind 3G... its unlimited so who cares but if they go all the way down to 2G then might as well get the 4G unlimited right?

I'm unsure about the 2G, 3G but for $20/mo. for Unlimited 4G LTE, you can't go wrong.
I left Sprint after 14 years, a few months or so ago because their data speeds sucked where I was, and LTE was non existent, in addition to always dropping voice calls, and getting really tired of their empty promises and excuses. I went over to Verizon for a few months knowing that they crap on you with their data pricing, but I had heard negative things about T-Mobile, and Atnt would be like Verizon re pricing. I decided to check out T-Mobile for myself because the negative comments were from a while ago, and Verizon was crapping all over me with their outrageous pricing.
So I went into a T-Mobile store, purchased an S4 to try out in the real world for their 14 day trial period, and after 2 days, ported over.
In my experience, T-Mobile has been the best regarding their plan pricing.
Coverage for the areas I frequent has been excellent, and that is what is most important. Once you see you have excellent coverage, T-Mobile is a done deal

Even though the map says your covered, you really have to try out the service in the areas you most frequent, either with someone else's S4 (which you may have done already) or during your trial period. But I'm sure you're already aware of that.
I go with the carrier with the best coverage and pricing that will benefit me the most.
I gotta say that if T-Mobile continues on the path they are now regarding overage, plans, pricing, etc., I'd like to see them pull more Verizon, Atnt, and Sprint customers away from their carriers.
The T-Mobile of today is not the T-Mobile of yesterday, and that's the albatross they have to shake off, but I think they're well on their way.
I think they're already shaking up the industry with their no contract plans, upgrading availability 2x a year, etc, as the other carriers are following their lead.

The T-Mobile of today is not the T-Mobile of yesterday, and that's the albatross they have to shake off, but I think they're well on their way.
I think they're already shaking up the industry with their no contract plans, upgrading availability 2x a year, etc, as the other carriers are following their lead.

I will give the trial period a chance but im more than sure ill stay with T-Mo.
i do agree T-Mo isnt what it used to be. Back then there was so much negativity, and bat talk about it, but it seems like theyre on a better track
and the whole no contract is a plus!
