[Q] Koodo t989d gps problems on custom roms - T-Mobile Samsung Galaxy S II SGH-T989

I have a question for those of you out there with a Koodo s2x t989d. I rooted my phone soon after I got it to fix a non-working gps. I did this so that I could use ClockSync app to auto update time so gps could be accurate. It worked. I have since been trying dozens of custom roms, cyanogenmod, Aokp roms, ptmr's roms and all in both ICS and JB. Not one rom no matter how I installed it (trying different orders of wiping, installing radios, roms, and clearing cach/ factory reset.) can I get the Gps to work. Everything else always works great. It does work on stock rom after I fixed it, and I recently found it works great on Ptmrs koodo V5. Now im sure this is because it is a stock based rom, also based on my carrier. It is a great rom, but I really would like to try some of the others, specifically Cyanogenmod 9 or 10. I have also tryed APGS fix version 2 and 3 on most of the custom roms I have tried.
I guess my question is, is there any koodo t989d owners out there that have a proven method for my gps to work on a custom rom? Everything else works great, just not GPS on custom roms!!
Also, to the more knowledgeable with installing roms, is there any reason that Gps works great on only koodo stock based roms? I am fairly bright and could probably attempt most suggestions if there was any to try to fix this.
Thanks in advance!!
Much appreciated!!!
Mike

It's become my habit to flash this GPS fix (found here)every time I flash a ROM, similar to flashing the gapps or titanium backup after the first reboot.
Might be a placebo affect now, but I can honestly lock on to ~15 satellites in under half a minute whereas before it was impossible to lock onto 3. Try it.
Oh, and if you don't have the recovery or don't want to flash it, you can just open up and extract the zip file, and copy the gps.conf to root/system/etc/ over the old one.

worked!
Cant thank you enough! so simple but it worked! I was unable to flash so I just moved file to the system/etc/ and rebooted. It may be noted that I turned off my gps before I rebooted which is something I haven't done before. I only had to complete this process once, and now it seems gps has worked on 3 different Jb roms.
Thanks again!

Lost GPS ? And how to get it working again.

I have seen a variety of posts in various threads about people not being able to get GPS connections and blaming the ROM they were on the for the problem - I imagine that sometimes that could be the reason but something happened to me recently that makes me wonder...
I am a flashaholic - often going back and forth between various ROMS via Nandroid back ups - all was good - then recently I noticed my GPS wasn't working. I thouht it was the rom - but no matter what I did I could not fix it. I tried installing other roms - totally clean install - I tried flashing back to rooted stock and no matter what I tried, GPS did not work.
I don't know where I saw it, but I finally saw a post from someone who suggested fixing it by going back to stock via odin - I tried that and it didnt work either - digging a little deeper someone suggested using odin to going back to pure stock then go into settings and do a factory restore.
I tried it - and it worked - took me virtually all day to figure it out - but it is working better than ever now - I wish I knew what caused it in the first place - but at least I found a somewhat reasonable solution.
If you have lost your GPS and can't get it working again - give it a shot -
Does anyone else have any other suggestiions that might work?
This is correct. I had this exact same issue and this worked for me as well.

Do you know why it happend in the first place? Was it the result of a specific Rom or just flashing in general?
Thats what i found that worked for me too. It only worked after i went into settings and reset the phone after odin.

I recently lost my GPS after flashing a Sprint-based ROM. Unfortunately, ODIN back to stock and factory reset from the Settings menu (and from recovery) did not bring back my GPS.
However, I followed a suggestion from this thread:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1923067
I used ODIN to go back to a rooted stock ROM, installed CWM, installed the Sprint-based ROM that seemed to have been the source of the trouble. My GPS started working again. I then used CWM to restore a stock nandroid backup I had from earlier and GPS continued to work thereafter in any ROM I flashed.
There may be a simpler process, but that's what worked for me.

Now that I thnk of it, I also had flashed a Sprint Based rom - that must have triggered my original issue - I explained what I did to restore my GPS at the start of this thread _ and it is similar to what you described - execept I did not odin to a SPRINT rom - I used ODIN to bak to pure stock - then did a factory restore - (and this second step is what seemed to do the trick) then I re-rooted and went backto my happy days of flashing roms - I haven't had an issue since.

Well...that may not be the cause but it's a common denominator. I did and I had to flash back to stock and factory wipe to get mine back.

It definitely seems to be a common element to most of these GPS issues. I'm not sure why, in some cases, all it takes is a factory reset in stock to fix it, while others have to re-install the Sprint ROM first. Either way, though, it seems like in most cases, it's user-fixable.
Got the GPS death syndrome today. Flashed a ton of stock ICS nandroid backups without any luck. Finally fixed it after flashing a Sprint JB ROM nandroid then back to ICS. Such a werid issue.
Why flash a Sprint ROM on an ATT phone though?

Because its the only official US Jelly Bean released at the moment.
It was one of the many backups I had. Don't know why it fixed it but it did.
I have the same issue. Now to flash a stock rom using Odin, do you have to use the toolkit? Also where can I download a Rogers stock rom from?
finally after losing gps and reading thread after thread got it to work , thank you to the guys that personally try to help , dont know why it struck this time but it did , now i will try to bring it back to stock , again thanks , by the way the rom i was using to bring it back was serenity 1.1 which i use before but wouldn't stick...:good:

If your problem started after installing a Sprint-based ROM, then root your phone, install CWM and then install that same Sprint ROM. Your GPS will probably work after that. You can then restore a Nandroid backup of another ROM. That's how a lot of us were able to fix our GPS.

[Q] Weird GPS problem. What happened?

Yesterday my gps wasnt working at all. It would not lock on no matter what I did. I was on a custom rom and I tried wiping my data/cache, reinstalling maps (just for giggles), and a multitude apps from the market that help deal with gps problems (gps fix, gps status, toolbox, etc).
When all this didn't work I decided to odin back to the last official JB update and still no gps. On a whim I decided to odin back to an ICS firmware and that made my gps work. I have no idea but it did. I then odin to UVDLJC, installed TWRP's most recent and restored my backup of the custom rom I was using in the first place and gps now worked.
While I'm happy as heck that my gps is now working and that it was not a hardware issue I'm extremely curious what happened.
I have flashed many roms lately and I cannot think what a custom rom can do to gps to hose it or if it was just one of those things. I would of thought that when I originally did an odin to UVDLJC that would fix the issue but that didn't. Whatever the flash to ICS did fixed it but what in the heck could that of been?
I figure if I can find out or get an idea what happened then I can steer away from flashing certain roms, or just be prepared that flashing any roms at all can make this happen again.
Same here.
Hello, ddcoh.
I am currently having the same issue you had with GPS not working. I've tried everything from trying tedious Play store apps to trying many different roms and kernels (clean installing every time) to completely reverting back to stock including using TriangleAway in case that did any help. Nothing worked. I have been thinking about going back to ICS to see if that worked but the last time I tried to downgrade from 4.1.1 to 4.0.4 I ended up soft bricking my phone even though I followed the steps word for word.
Can you tell how you went about downgrading to ICS and then back to JB, please? I use my GPS a lot and I would hate to find out it's a hardware issue.
Typically, it's been when people are going from 4.2 to 4.1.

Well I used odin to flash an T999_UVALEM which was a prerooted ICS rom. After booting it up I checked to see if GPS was working and it was.
I then used odin again to flash T999_UVDLJA which is a JB rom and booted it up also and saw that gps was working. Then I just restored a backup of a room I had been using and GPS still worked.
I've been out of town and noticed that after flashing a few roms that gps wasn't working so instead of doing all the above stuff I just flashed a cm10 rom. I believe I either used a cm10 nightly (or maybe 10.1, memory is hazy) or LiquidRom and that got the GPS working by just doing that. Not sure if that will work for you but you could always backup your setup using TWRP's latest and then flashing a cm10 rom and seeing if gps is working and if that fixes it then you could then just reboot and restore the rom you are currently on and that might fix your gps for you.

[Q] Searching for GPS

Hi everybody,
I got a problem which i've spent days searched all over the internet and tried so many different methods but still no hope. So posting this thread here is the only last hope, please anyone help me?
I recently got a problem with GPS service. Whenever i open the map search for a direction, it works, but it only give me the direction list but not navigation because the phone can't not be located.
And here is the point: I'm using different roms nothing works except LiquidSmooths Roms, But my favorite one is Frosty JB v6.
Please anyone?!
Had a similar problem after flashing 10.1 GPS wouldn't show in the left hand corner I had to get a new phone through warranty although I managed to fix it before returning it by Odin back to 4.0.4

I had a similar problem. There have been a couple of fixes posted. It generally happens when you downgrade from a 4.2 ROM back to 4.1. This is what I did to fix it:
1. Flashed a CM10 ROM (ex. LiquidSmooth)
2. Verified that GPS was working in that ROM (it should be working!)
3. ODIN to stock JB Touchwiz firmware (UVDLJA for TMobile users)
4. Once flashed and on stock firmware, verify the GPS is working (it should be working!)
5. Rooted the firmware and flashed to desired 4.1.1 ROM (ex. FrostyJB)
6. GPS should still be working!
Hope this helps!
I just started having that issue myself. I flashed back to original firmware via Odin. Still not working. Is there an issue with the GPS radia and possibly a fix?

I will confirm that moving from a 4.2 ROM to a 4.1 ROM (with all the necessary steps and wipes in between) will leave you without GPS. As discovered from scouring the various ROM threads, this also appears to be a hardware inconsistency problem (different factories use different distributors to build the same phones) and not everyone has this problem. This might be a problem with all T999 S3's but I do not have multiple phones so I am unable to test or confirm.
Has anyone flashed from a 4.2 back to a 4.1 and still had GPS?
I have done this with multiple 4.2 and 4.1 ROMs. So far, I have done this twice (from different 4.1 and 4.2 ROMs) and I always lose GPS.
Has anyone found a fix or is this a problem that we just have to deal with on our phones?

[Q] GPS not locking for any 4.3 or 4.2 roms

Hi everybody,
For a while I had been running Wicked rom (version 7 and then 8) without any issues at all. Data was great, wifi was working, calls and texts were made perfectly. Not a single issue as far as I could see. GPS was working just the way I was expecting it to (I use my GPS for navigation on a weekly basis).
I've explored other roms as well and I've never encountered anything serious or out of the ordinary.
Now this problem has appeared recently. Ever since I flashed a 4.3 rom (Infamous V9), my GPS has stopped working. It keeps trying to lock but never does. I've left it on for a long time too, it never locked; It just keeps searching.
I've even tried apps I've seen suggested such as GPS status & toolbox. Nothing I've done with those apps have worked. When I went back to the wicked rom (version 8), gps still did not work. Prior to the Infamous v9 rom, I had flashed the Cyanogenmod 10.2 rom and the gps was fine.
Now, regardless of what I do, the GPS no longer works on any of the 4.2 or 4.3 roms I've flashed.
When I flashed VirginRom (android 4.4), I had no signal on my phone at all, but that was due to my modem. I followed the instructions to odin flash the new modem and everything worked! On that 4.4 rom, everything worked perfect. More importantly, the GPS was working again and I was able to use it for navigation when I went out. I tried to test out other 4.4 roms. I flashed the dandroid google edition and cyanogenmod 11 on this forum. Both of these roms worked perfectly. The GPS was working and it locked within a few seconds.
When I tried to go back to any of the 4.2 or 4.3 roms, the GPS still did not work, even though everything else was fine.
I'm not the techie type of person, compared to so many people on this wonderful forum. I just do my best to follow instructions and learn from what is done ><. Does anyone here know what the issue I'm experiencing is?
Just for some added info:
I guess it's obvious my model is SGH-M919
Baseband changed though. It used to be MDL. Now it's M919UVUEMK2.
Any help would be much appreciated! Thank you.
Have you tried the app faster fix app? Also, do you have Google maps and earth installed?

Custom roms and freezing help

hello my wife has a tmobile galaxy s4, as do i, but her wifi stopped working one day, i tried everything to fix it and nothing worked, so i rooted the phone and and flashed twpr, and tried some custom roms, but they all end up freezing on the lock screen or out of nowhere and ive tried various roms, all stable as they say on the post, but they freeze on me, im on the nh7 baseband and bootloader i used a phone info app to check. what could be causing this with every rom i tried? ive tried the pac-man rom, slimkat, google play edition, dan&ktoonz rom. ive rooted and used roms on my old galaxy s3 no problem.
Try flashing a stock rom, just for giggles & grins. See if that works before you go off the deep end.

Where can i get the stock roms
http://galaxys4root.com/galaxy-s4-stock-firmware/ Choose your stock Rom here
now are these flashable via twpr.
Tell me if they helped in anyway
Try working with this as the Web site mentioned before by Pablo has the not so latest firmware, and this is trustworthy from our own forum, just follow the instructions, read through the thread for answers in case you have any questions.
