[Q] 240 DPI - what´s working & what´s not (S-Note etc.) - Galaxy Note II Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Good morning!
As I´m new to the N7100, I tried to figure out what exactly is working out of the box when switching to 240 (250) dpi. Sadly, these informations seem to be fragmented all over the board and I was not able to sum them up or get some straight infos on that. So I would like to collect them right here (including solutions).
I would apreciate your help! I need to know what of the following is working normally ad if not, how to "repair" it:
1.) Dailer & Contacts (should get smaller I think and I´m sure that there is still no workaround)
2.) S-Note
3.) Market
4.) Camera
5.) (...)

get the 240dpi rom and u should get most to work except alarm clock

Hey, thank you for your post! Sadly, this doesn´t answer my question! I just want to know what works out of the box (as stated above), that means I want to know what will work if my device is rooted and I´m changing the DPI on Stock (or Omega or whatever Rom I want).

[MOD][XPOSED] CRT off effect [NO LONGER SUPPORTED]

You have probably heard about a modification that makes your phone look like an old CRT TV when you turn it off. This is actually a builtin effect, but it is disabled by default.
There is a tutorial by tweezit that shows how easy it is to enable this effect - but it requires you to change framework-res.apk. There are different threads that offer those modified files, but to combine different modifications, there have to be many different files with all possible combinations.
To avoid this, I'm developing the Xposed framework, which allows such modifications without changing any APK (or JAR in this case). All you need to do is install the Xposed framework app (root required) and then the attached module for it - both with the normal APK installer as any other app.
Tested with Stock LPQ, but should work for most ICS ROMs (not sure about CM9 though).
This mod is no longer supported. Please use my Tweakbox instead.
Very good work. When we add this apk and the Xposed framework app, the effect is automaticaly enabled or we need to enable this by the app? Thanks.
There is a short installation guide with screenshots in the framework thread.
Yes, you need to click a button to actually install the framework (what you download is the installer) and click a checkbox to enable the module. But both should be easy and fast.
Sweet! I've been looking for the CRT effect for my stock rom. And you have made it surprinsingly easy to install it! Thank you!
I would love to see more of these modules. Thx for the sharing!

This module is now integrated in my Tweakbox. I recommend using that module instead.

I may be wrong, but i think this is for Samsung ROM..
I thought CM9 might already have this as an option? Well anyway, this mod is deprecated. Try using my Tweakbox, which includes this mod in a cleaner version. If that also doesn't work for you, follow these questions (and please also let me know if other Xposed mods work for you).
Shame we cannot do this without root :-(
Im scared to root my phone...

It should work on any stock ICS ROM.
Hello everyone
Does this crt off effect works properly? Because until now there is an annoying flickering of the screen.
Is this problem solved ?
This mod works as good or bad as other CRT mods do. The difference is that you can combine it with other Xposed mods.
The whole thing is just a switch that is enabled, the effect itself is already existing in the ROM. I see the flickering as well. This is reported to be a bug in a native library, so I cannot fix it.
Please also note that this version of the mod is no longer supported as I have integrated it into my Tweakbox.
Just installed the mod, works fine on my device - so simply unchecking it in the Xpose app then restarting will revert it back?
(I actually got the flickering after the effect with another mod with a cwm install but now its not present)
EDIT: Spoke too soon - the flickering came back after a few locks and unlocks... no ideas why, but it's too much of a distraction for me so I had to uninstall it.

Yes, unchecking
a mod disables it after a restart. Same thing for uninstalling the mod of course, but then it will be automatically enabled if you install it again.
I personally can live with fhe flickering from time to time, but that's up to every user to decide for themselves.

Updating Busybox should fix that. I think this needs to go into the FAQs, several people reported it already.
There is a fix available for the flickering issue in original android development thread

And it's working great for me and many others.
As you are already using Xposed, you could try a beta version that I just uploaded. It contains a setting apply the patch on-the-fly (that is in the memory), so you do not even need to replace any more files.
I had already modified the framework res file with the uotkitchen.
It was only the scrollbar which i made red but now its gone.is there any chance to have my uot mod enabled plus the crt effekt???
Thanks for your app anyway much easier to install the effect then over wm.

[Q] A few modding questions

Hi guys,
I'm a former i9100 owner and recent buyer of a Gnexus :victory:
I'm getting this new phone in 3 days , in the meanwhile i've done some research on XDA but there are some points which are still unclear to me.
I hope someone can help me out.
1) How can i change softkeys DPI? ( I mean how can i make them smaller so the screen for apps is bigger? )
1bis) How can i make the black bar transparent so the keys stay directly on wallpaper?
2) I've seen I can change softkeys and that's cool. Can i change also which buttons are displayed? ( for example i never use the right one, the open tasks manager ).
Thanks in advance!

1) Custom roms (most) have this option.
---If your rom does not have this option you can use This Guide (ignore the edits made in the video)
Instead navigate to \framework-res\res\values\dimens.xml
And edit these three lines:
<dimen name="navigation_bar_height">48.0dip</dimen>
<dimen name="navigation_bar_height_landscape">48.0dip</dimen>
<dimen name="navigation_bar_width">42.0dip</dimen>
To the height you'd prefer.
YOU NEED to be on a deodexed (all custom roms...any rom you flash.)
Personally, I take it down to 0.0 dip and use LMTPie instead.
1bis[lolwut]) Eh. There are some hackey little tweaks that a few are making...
Personally; I think you end up with too many bugs and it isn't worth it.
2)Yes, via custom roms.

Lulz, sorry.
I made the url tag and forgot to link in.

I think most people who like a stock feel are using "Mmuzzy" builds.
I personally run the heavily modified AOKP.
Edit:
Also, as for your "customizing nav buttons" question...
This is definitely not a stock feature...so it wouldn't be in stock rooted.
AOKP and I'm sure others that are 4.2 based include the option.
There isn't a publicly available 4.2.1 build for AOKP, however. The team is working on mashing all of the features back in.
Ok sorry for the dumb question but...how does AOPK roms behave on gnexus?
on my i9100 anything which is NOT based on stock (ie cyanogen) has a massive battery life penalty compared to stock-based. For example with my stock based+ custom kernel i can achieve around 35 hours with normal usage ( 1 hour call, whatsap and browser ) while on cyanogen i dont get such results.
This is why i take stock roms deodexed and work on them

[Q] Similar ROM to Slimbean (small size) but without its own Gapps?

So the thing I enjoy most about slimbean is the "night" setting and the smaller sizes.
Correct me if i'm wrong, but the part that determines the general sizes is the LCD density, and for slim its at 245.
Are there any ROMs that also use the same LCD density (if that is what's causing the small size)?
I'm mainly wondering because it uses its own Gapps package so that it could do this night mode where everything is black.
But I want to use the new gmail and other gapps that just came out more than I want night mode
You don't have to use the SlimBean GApps with the Slim ROMs, but have a look at CarbonROM (has Dark Carbon settings and you can change LCD density).

I use LiquidSmooth (what Carbon is based off of) and used to use their method to change the DPI. But recently, I've discovered the XPosed Per-App DPI settings included in the Rom. With it I can manually adjust the DPI of any program to make it whatever I want. The thing I like about this is that I don't have to mess with the Play Store (no more errors when trying to download apps). That, and some apps don't play well with a modified dpi on our phone.
I can go through and make google calendar 240 dpi and see how it functions, then change it to 190 an see how it works. I change Nova's setting to make the launcher look more like Slim Rom's (the Rom that made me fall in love with switching the DPI). It works really well and is worth a test drive, in my opinion.

So I tried to install it, and I got this assert failed problem, which links to this solution. Did you flash the odex, deodex, or 3rd rom? I'm just confused, since I would have to install a gapps for the 4.1.2 JB. did you do any of that?
edit - my broadband is mc3

Xperia S, 4.1.2, FW 6.2.b.1.96 : Changing the LCD DPI ?

Hello,
A great colleague of mine who also owns a xperia S like me
loaded SlimNasomi rom (I think 4.2.2) and did change lcd DPI.
Screen displays more info and icons are smaller. Look nice.
Is it a way to do it with official 6.2.b.1.96 rom ?
I found a thread on a forum about root'ing the phone and
updating a file build.prop in /system, updating ro.sf.lcd_density
I even found an app 'Google Play DPI Fix Tool'
Did anyone already try to play with LCD DPI's ?
Thanks. Cheers from Belgium,
Thierry

It changes build.prop to desired dpi. I use it because it's faster and it really works. I tried on stock ROM, OpenSEMC and letama's AOSP 4.3.
And what is the range of values to stay in to avoid an endless bootloop?
yes that's the question, What value did you use for. in .200 fw i used a lcd density changer soft (don't remember the name) and guess what i got endless loop. I used 244 or something like that.
I usually use 240 and I didn't have any problems with that dpi.
It is standard Android dpi so most apps work just fine. Stock ROM look good but it has some minor offsets (gradient in notification bar as far as I remember).
I have been talking about this in the themes section in an old thread. I keep seeing people have issues with the dpi apps. I personally just edit build prop manually as it is not hard. I use Anttek explorer for my file browsing and edits. I would also suggest you try Xposed framework and per app dpi module. The magic LCD number is 192 for tablet mode. If you set home to 160 it goes into tablet mode but the status bar will not combine at the bottom. There is also another xposed module that forces tablet mode and works well but is still buggy. You also loose small apps.
There is a way to force tablet mode with out the dpi change but I have to figure out how to do that and even then not sure it will actually work. Need to ask some smali experts to help me.
... and what about if in endless bootloop ? ... :crying:
You must make backup before any modifcations
Yea it is a great idea to have a backup when messing with the system. If something goes wrong you can just go back to where you started.

And use wipe & format > clean to install a new rom
Then install the rom

Hi developer,
sorry i want to ask again.

you didn't fix this problem.
- custom wallpaper can not fit with screen (scrollable) it can't be Lockmode
i know this isn't a big problem. I can fix it by using launcher app. but it sucks my ram so much. and if i use it, the icons become low quality (if i use my stock rom. although i use launcher app, the icons is still in HD)
please fix it. I think it's just the one step to make your rom looks perfect.
