[Q] Rooted Stock JB, Thether or MSL? - Sprint Samsung Galaxy S III

I have rooted the stock JB, which I have read is odexed.
Straight answer, can I find my MSL, and can i get wifi tether on it as it is right now (stock odexed root JB)?

AHA
I don't think it matters if you are odexed or deodexed: but the answer to both your questions is a simple YES.

Well, the apps don't work. Wifi Tether does not work, and the MSL one does not work either. If you know this can be done, I will appreciate pointing me in the right direction.

If your on jelly bean then getting the msl is easy. Install terminal emulator on the phone. Open it up and hit home. It will stay open and youll see it in the notification bar. From there go into the dialer and press ##3282#. Hit Edit and it prompts for the msl. Leave it blank and press ok. It will say the code is invalid. From there pull down the notification bar and press on the terminal so it opens back up and type "getprop ril.MSL" and the code should show. MSL must be all caps like i have it. Wifi tether must be this one http://beta.androidfilehost.com/?fid=9390169635556426338 and you need super su installed to use it.

I was able to get the MSL. Thank you very much, but to others trying this, you must hit the notification bar real quick or the phone will reboot once you enter a wrong MSL.
The WiFi Tehter does not work on odexed, according to the thread and it certainly did not work for me. The ssid never shows up anywhere.

It will work on odex roms but supersu is a must. Superuser will not work. And do not change any settings in the tether app

Any Standard Rooted 1.47.651.1 ROMs out there?

Does anyone know of a "1.47.651.1 ROM" that:
• Is rooted WITHOUT Super User(meaning "adb shell" brings up "#", not a "$" and then "su" to get "#")
• Isn't tweaked to hell
• Has working AND updated EVDO & WiMax Radios
That's all I want, but can't seem to find it in this jumble of hacked ROMs and special do-dads.
I think that the "start over with 1.47" thread gets you to stock with everything updated, except that you're going to have superuser access.
It's probably your best bet. Why don't you want superuser permissions?
Because typing "su" an extra step, and it also asks me to give permissions everytime something with root access pops up. So annoying. I just want it to work lol.

It should only ask for the application once. If you don't have it, the application won't run at all will it?

Seems to do it a lot, and even stops me to ask me if certain programs are allowed to communicate with Google servers every so often. Is SU something that is required NOW for a root to work? Because my last phone didn't (Black) didn't have it on there, had 1.47, and rooted fine with the flash exploit method.
It's not working for my white phone though, so I had to use SimpleRoot (which took me back to a WAY earlier version), and flash my way up to 1.47.

I do not have your issues with the superuser permission app. It maintains a list of all allowed apps. Once you ass it as "always allowed", you never see it prompt for that app/function, again.
I am using whitslack

Anyone else have trouble getting their MSL?

Tried Connectbot using getprop and getprop ril.MSL. No MSL in the list, and getprop ril.MSL comes up blank. Never happened on any of my other devices.

Mine isn't showing up like that either.
Maybe I will write a script or something for it later, but do this:
Dial ##3282#
Tap Edit
Enter any number (I typed 000000)
Go into Terminal Emulator or adb shell and type: getprop ril.MSL
You won't find it unless you enter an incorrect code first. Tested and working 100%

Tried it on mine, and first try through it rebooted instantly (possibly related to my other issue here?).
Second time worked perfectly! Thanks.

Right, shouldn't reboot on you doing it the first time. You may want to factory data reset your phone, that shouldn't be happening.
Same for me, rebooted first time, worked second time.

Another way is download alogcat and use the search function inside the app and type in msl and it'll show you.

Easiest solution I found was to use "get my msl" It wont work the first time you try the app, but if you go into the phone dialer and type ##3282# then type in any 6 digit number, the next time you use "get my msl" it will give you the correct number.
Cheers!

I think I made a post in the "flash to pp, boost, cricket" thread. It has the SPC utility apk for most Sprint 4.3 devices. You WILL need Internet access

It's so much easier to use the app. Sprint and Boost have ALWAYS given me lip about getting the SPC. Some of these smartasses even tell me I don't need it...If I didn't need it I wouldn't have called for it, facepalm.

I think I lost root. How do I check and fix?

I've had a few apps tell me that I'm not rooted and my wifi tether no longer works (laptop doesnt even see the network. Tried changing and using another tehtering app and it saw it but only gave me limited connection. No internet.) but when I put SU into terminal emulator it returns #.Can someone please tell me how to check to make sure my root is still fully entact and functioning.
Try opening the superuser app.
Thanks for the fast response man. I really appreciate it.
I did and it didnt do anything so I cleared the permissions for it aaaaaaand think i made it worse. in super user I scrolled down to the wifi tether app and clicked it and hit the trash icon withouth thinking it through. IS there a way to manually add allowed apps. I also noticed SU never prompts me to allow apps anymore. Really holding up my ingress progress. lol

Just run any app that needs root and it will prompt you again. You cake also download root checker from play store.

Thank you too eles. I actually just did that and it told me I dont not have proper root access. But Terminal emulator does show # when prompted. Can either of you tell me how what may have caused this and how to fix it. I did just get the 4.1.1 update from T-mo so Im thinking maybe that.

Yes do this or Odin the prerooted one. The update broke it.

Thanks again aero. I reflashed it and Root checker still says im not. I also tried to run fix permissions and it says an error too.I also tried to do a back up and it hangs on "done freeing up space". What would be your next step to diagnosing/fixing this. and Thanks again you guys I've been freaking out a little. lol
Just re-root.
Then reflash your favorite ROM.
How did you root in the first place?
Sent from my SGH-T999 using xda premium
Is it really that simple? Won't there be some issues because I have a somewhat partial root already? I honestly don't rememeber my original method. I did it back in september and havent messed with it since. I never even ran any roms I'm still bone stock. Is there a method you would suggest? or possibly a link to it?
Yes, it really is that simple.
If root still isn't working, follow instructions in my signature. The su zip is also going to wipe out any previous superuser/supersu that is present on your phone.
Alternatively, if you already have CWM on your phone, you can use this http://db.tt/okfh9vzU to update it without tripping your counter.
Thanks to your guys' help I was able to reroot using the tool kit. Now my issue is that I did this to fix my wifi tethering issue and its not. What app would you guys suggest for tethering? I dont have it on a part of myplan but I know theres ways around it. Wifi tether and barnacle didnt work (wasnt seen by laptop or other s3) and fox fi was identified, let me connect but said it was limited, then eventually went to fully connected but still wouldnt load pages or anything. If I can get one of you guys to help me solve this by suggesting an app or something I'll get out of your hair.
Do I need to load a custom rom to tether maybe? Thanks again guys.

Tether Help

Hi guys I really need some help here. Last night I set out to simply find a way to tether wifi from my GS3 for free. From my understanding that required me to root + download tether app with root admin rights. Apparently it appears to be more in depth than that  unless I’m missing something simple. I’ll just start by giving you my specs and tell you what I’ve done so far. Sorry for the long post.
Sprint
Galaxy S3
SPH-L710
JellyBean 4.3
Hardware L710.14
Stock kernel and rom
Followed the steps in this link to root it. It pretty much walks me through using Odin to root the phone. Looks like it also installs SuperSU for superuser access. I like the fact that it’s not too invasive, which is great because I simply want wifi tethering and am not looking for a custom kernel or rom. http://honai-android.blogspot.com/20...-sph-l710.html
Supersu
When I start the phone it says “Unfortunately SuperSU has stopped”
Downloaded the apk, ran it, launched ok, asked me to disable knox and said yes, rebooted phone, got same msg that supersu stopped, runs fine after install apk but fails after every reboot. Maybe knox is screwing with it?
No supersu update on the play store
Regardless I installed root checker and says the device has root access…
I downloaded a bunch of tethering apps I thought had root access but none actually enabled tethering.
Foxfi
When I use CDMA only (used this for troubleshooting purposes) Launch Foxfi, activate wifi hotspot, “unable to connect to data network, turning off hotspot. Your plan may not have hotspot service”’
When I use LTE/CDMA the popup message is you are not subscribed to the Hotspot service. Do you want to see subscription options?”
When I cancel out of that popup it says FoxFI hotspot ready and has the wifi icon on the notification bar but can’t find the wifi network on devices
Also it never requests superuser
1 click wifi tethering free
Launch, click enable, the notification bar says hotspot connected but then I get the same error “unable to connect to data network, turning off hotspot. Your plan may not have hotspot service”, still can’t see the network on other devices
When I use LTE/CDMA the popup message is you are not subscribed to the Hotspot service. Do you want to see subscription options?”
Also it never requests superuser
Wifi Tether TrevE Mod v3.3
Launch, opens fine, asks for superuser access, click button to enable tethering, get an error in the app that says “tethering started with errors! Please check ‘show log’”
Clicking show log gives me an error of “Unable to open log file. File does not exist.”
It still shows a message “Tethering is currently running…” under the “ongoing apps” section but still can’t find wifi network on other devices
Jtether
Launch, “says turning Wifi AP on” requests superuser access, eventually gets to the same message that says “unable to connect to data network, turning off hotspot. Your plan may not have hotspot service”
When I use LTE/CDMA the popup message is you are not subscribed to the Hotspot service. Do you want to see subscription options?”
Oddly when I launch Jtether with FoxFI on I can see the FoxFI network for literally 1 second, but not long enough to connect. This only happens when I use CDMA only. When I use LTE/CDMA it never shows up at all.
.
I’ve uncovered a lot of issues but I don’t know where to start troubleshooting. Do I start with SuperSU errors or can they be omitted? Do I start with FoxFI error troubleshooting? Maybe start with finding out why TrevE’s tether mod has errors but log file can’t be found? Maybe the root method I used wasn’t ‘deep’ enough? If so what method should I use? I thought this would be way easier but hours and hours later, here I am with no wifi tethering. I hope you guys can help.
Thnx in advance!

Thanks for the quick reply! What exactly is this file? Is it a new kernel? Or does it simply edit the configurations relating to tethering? Also can I go back to 100% stock after flashing it?
Also will this prevent me from being able to update the OS via Samsung push updates?

It is not new firmware. It's just a modified services.jar file. Since it's a hack, you will not be 100% stock after installing it. (You can get back to it by restoring the stock files (.jar and .odex files).

From what ive found from another thread:
The only think you need ahead of time is your MSL. This isn't too hard to get from Sprint customer service. I got mine via an app called MSL Utility, which it seems now crashes every time I try to use it on Lollipop.
The steps:
Go to Dialer and enter ##DATA# (##3282#)
Press "Edit" then enter your MSL.
Click on APN Settings
For both "APN2 EHRPD internet" and "APN2 LTE internet" change APN Type from "default, mms" to "default, mms, dun"
After you enter the change, hit Menu -> Save before going to the next APN."
However seems like they changed it with the new lollipop update so that you cant go in and find your msl number, I even tried to find it with terminal emulator after being rooted and couldnt find it. Should be noted though that you can supposedly find your msl on a lower android. If you by chance call in to get this number write it down and keep it safe as doing a prl update will put it back to normal and lose this function
However If you are rooted download Galaxy tools and it will work perfect. Plus you will have the option to get all of your quick notification toggles like wifi hotspot and data if you so wish with the .apk
Galaxy Tools
For your debloating you can just uninstall the apps you dont want and disable the others that wont go away so that they wont update or show up in your app drawer.
If you are rooted you can use this System app remover (ROOT)
good luck
I guess next question would be what is the safest way to root and what is needed.

For me the safest and easiest way was to use skipsofts' Unified Android Toolkit. I personally choose this as it finds and downloads all the latest files and drivers and just prompts you with options as well as clear instructions on what to do next. You also have an option to inject a custom recovery and backup too. Im lazy and let it organize my files for me
If you feel pretty confident you can do search the interwebs for the latest odin and chainfire tar Put your phone into download mode (power down and boot back up holding down the volume ↓ + pwr + menu button) make sure auto reboot is ticked along with f. reset in odin plug in your phone then go to the pda/ap spot and locate that tar file. Hit start and let it run. It should take only like 30 seconds or so. Aftwards power your phone go to supersu and update the binaries. Later flash a custom recovery like twrp or clockwork if you care to flash more things later.
Thats a pretty quick run down of how to do it. If you want more details you can always google it
EDIT: It should be noted that rooting will trip KNOX
