[Q] upgradeability ,text sharpness and screen burn in? - Galaxy Note II Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

hi,
as someone who wants to finally board the android train, and is particulary impressed by the note's concept, i was waiting for thw GN2 to be avilablele, but i have a few questions:
1. i intend to use my next device for approximately 2-3 years. i've read here about concerns regarding the GN2's "outdated" hardware. normally it wouldn't bother me, but it's my understanding that the A15 is a huge leap forward, and in light of HTC's announcement about updating only to 2012 devices, i wonder if the A15's could become the new standard and when key lime pie (or the next one) comes, it would be too demanding in samsung's eyes and it won't be officially supported. in addition, some devs. dropping development for exynous based phones combined with the fact that afaik, CM doesn't support the s-pen's features (which are a main part of why i chose this device) may leave it behind for me. is it reasonale to expect at least 2 years of support by samsung?
2. has anyone used the handwriting recognition to solve math problems (i.e. infinitisimal calculus)? does it work well?
3. how much time can i keep the screen on wih a still background before i risk screen burn in?
4. does the screen appear not so sharp while viewing text, due to the somewhat low pixel density?
5. i've read here a comment about the note 3 supposedly released on march 2013. is that a popular\ reasonable opinion?
thanks a lot for the patience reading this post, and in advance for your much needed help!!

Two years of support will definitely happen. The old Note 1 is still getting updates, and recently includes the multi-tasking sidebar.
I've used the handwriting with equation inputs. It does not solve calculus for you. You just get to input it.
Not sure about burn in. But on HDAMOLED screens. I've heard upwards of 2 years on moderate usage.
The PPI thing is personal preference. I came from iPhone 4, and while the Note 2 PPI is lower. It does make up with its monster display.
Note 3 rumours need to be taken with a pinch of salt. I don't see it happening. Although anything can happen. There are credible reports of Apple releasing i5S as soon as feb or march.

I can only comment on text sharpness. And in my opinion it is perfectly fine. Words still look great when zoomed in etc. All the round letters look round abd not jagged

that's very reassuring. does "support" usually mean implimentation of certain features or the full ver. of android?

i read about the partnership with wolfram alpha, since i check many of my results on their site and given the note's ability to recognize handwriting, i thought it would save me a lot of time. is it not possible or did you not try it on wolfram alpha?

full version of android. seems like my old galaxy s2 will still receive full jelly bean even though it is 1 1/2 years old. Samsung is actually quite good with updates compared to other oems (except google and apple of course)
I used s note with wolfram alpha a little. It does work flawlessly for what I tried. Didn't try it excessively though.

thanks for the rapid responses!
since it's pretty much why i need the s pen, can anyone with n7100 try to write some short random integral/ derivative with Exponentiation with the s-pen to see if wolfram can use it? it would erase every shred of doubt i have, and assert this phone as the chosen one..

[Q] Similar App - SGS Touchscreen Booster.

Hi I recently came came across this app so haven't used it. Looks very intriguing though.
Is there any chance we will get this for our phone?

You've tried it on your SGS2? I did, but it seems that none of the modifications make that much of a difference, unfortunately . Pretty weird, since the Galaxy S 2 uses, from what I know, exactly the same touch screen as its predecessor (Amtel MaxTouch or something).
Wonder how much effort a port would cost.
It seems samsung patched that on 2.3.3. After updated to jv5, touchscreen booster don't work on my sgs1 too.
Unfortunately, I have never used this apk on my Samsung galaxy s 1. So I wonder; does this screen booster make your phone get rid of the split second screen delay? (Noticeable when you navigate very slowly with your finger on a webpage, 0.3~0.5 seconds after you initiated your gesture the screen jumps to your finger and starts following. If so, then this phone is on the same level of smoothness as the iOS devices (well, that's what I think).
I don't know if anyone else noticed but the SGSII also has Touchscreen lag(a pretty bad lag I would say, around 0.1-0.2sec delay).
The lag is VERY VERY noticeable when playing games which needs fast response like Fruitninja, Modern Combat 2 etc.
On my old DHD and iPad these games were really enjoyable with 0 lag! Hopefully some Devs can look into it and find a way to fix it.
Well..for now i guess i will just wait and pray.

thats true lag is definetly here. Very easy to notice when playing Impossible Game. On my previous SGS playing was much easier.

That is false, I tested it and it does not work. To verify this, install "Multitouch Tester" from market and run it(maybe any other touchscreen test tool will do). You can easily see the lag while sliding your finger over the screen, cuz the circle simply cannot catch up.
And this lag does not exit in DHD or any other LCD devices i guess. Hope it is not an AMOLED input lag.
I wouldn't say the touchscreen is slow, it's actually very fluid in tracing your movements. But try and tap on your screen in the touch-viz app, tapping quickly; I can manage to touch the screen without registering a touch... No doubt there is a slight delay. But I it's not a deriving from the use AMOLED screen technology, others android devices I've seen suffer from this delay as well. I guess it's just part of the overall android touch calibration. Most touchscreens mange to house response times below 0,001 ms I once read~
Btw. People in different forums are complaining about the slight delay as well. For some of them the delay is even more noticeable. Maybe a future firmware update can solve this “potential downfall”.

I certainly hope so!
BTW this is what Samsung avertises on their website. But in reality the response time is no where near fast.

Samsung is talking about the claimed sub-1ms display response time of the SAMOLED+ display itself - this has nothing to do with the touch substrate or its related delays.
All displays have some delay from the time the GPU sends a signal until it is shown onscreen. Sammy claims that this screen is among the fastest ever put into a device. For reference, good desktop gaming displays aren't that fast in response time, nor are good HDTVs.

Dual camera from s4 possible on s3?

Hey guys. Just did some reading in the general, themes & apps and development sections and didnt find anything but i must ask since my wife insists....is it possible now or will it be ever possible to do the dual camera thing from the s4 ads or is it a hardware limitation and only the s4 will be able to do it?
Thanks.

From what I have read about the Galaxy S4 and seen it doesn't seem to have any special camera improvements except for a 13 megapixel back camera and 2 megapixel front camera compared to the S3's back 8 megapixel and front 1 megapixel camera. Also Samsung themselves said that any new software update, which this seems to be, will be given to the Galaxy S3. So until Samsung release the new software's source code or whatnot I don't see someone else doing this soon, maybe. (There might be some modders out there who might build their own tweak for this but unlikely)
While you wait for this feature to be released I would suggest using the Multi-lens Camera, which can be found with a quick search in the play market, that can be used to take pictures like shown in the S4 ads and more! (Haven't tested the application myself yet) Hope I helped you out.

I'm no developer, but it's possible that there's a hardware limitation in terms of physically switching both cameras on at the same time. I doubt it, but it's definitely a possibility.
That being said, if there is no such hardware limitation, I believe our dev's will be able to figure it out even before the release of the software. There are already commands that control each camera separately (in order to switch them), so it's just a matter of making an app (or modifying the camera apk) to allow both at the same time. Of course, I'm making it sound easier than it actually is, but I believe that it should be possible.

Question Display problem with new Fold 3

Got my new Fold 3 today, set it up and immediately noticed that something was wrong with the screens, both large and small. With certain apps such as Google Maps, Samsung Browser, Chrome, Amazon, etc., I have spots on the screen that seem to get stuck and merge into lines when scrolling. This happens on both screens when opened and closed. I've tried Wipe Cache, Factory Reset, and a few other options. Seems to be a hardware issue. Probably a GPU failure if certain hardware acceleration is required. In some apps it doesn't happen at all like Firefox, Youtube, Samsung Gallery, Facebook.
Anyone with the same problem?

Out of the box it should work.
It left the factory like that more than likely
Factory resets solve little* and worse the issue is likely to reoccur if the root cause isn't found.
The return window clock is running down, tick-tock Mr Wick.
*use after major firmware updates, malware that can't be eradicated and system damage caused by 3rd party apks.

Well saying things in favour of Samsung does not mean that one is a Samsung executive, and complaints about Samsung doesn't always come from an Apple executive, or an Xiaomi executive. It is exaggerated.
Actually in my opinion folding phones are only a proof of concept and still a long way to become, reliable, and durable, to use. Also it doesn't really brings a ton more than normal phones, considering that they are just pocketable tablets with a less durable screen and less battery life. This is just my point of view and if you don't agree comment below.

Sorry to pry but could we get a tl;Dr of what those rights are? Could be useful for people in those regions if they have problems and find this thread.
Although regardless of your regional rights OP wants a working phone right? So returning it as soon as possible makes sense. Iirc in the UK returns are possible up to 7 years later but the sooner you do it the more likely a manufacturer is to help without questions.

Question Problems with S pen pro

Hey all!
I bought the s pen pro for my fold 3. As a pasive pen it works, but i cannot get it to pair for smart bluetooth capabilities even if i press and hold the pairing button. Has someone experienced this? Is there any fix?
had the same issues. had to go into phone settings and type in S Pen... and play around in air action settings.
Thanks...got it. Completwly different to what youtube videos show.
Small tip when messing in s pen settings in air actions you can unpair if the pen is acting up

yea it definitely didnt work straight out the box like the earbuds do
I got lucky and mine paired immediately. Even told me how much battery life it had right out of the box which was 10%.
As soon as I turned mine on, I got a pop-up on my ZF3 to pair it. Then when I switched to SPen mode from Fold mode, I got the same pop-up on my Note 20 Ultra
My s pen pro will not connect to fold 3. It does great with tab s7. I am switching to z fold mode and nothing. My fold does not have any settings for pen or air settings anywhere. Any suggestions? Return pen as defective or is it the crappy Samsung software again? Tried the turn on and Off. It flashes blue. NOTHING. Blue tooth does not see it.
There are instructions that come with the pen, and it was ridiculously easy to pair. However, I'm at a loss finding any use for it, so haven't used it since the day it came (it was free with the Samsung credit). What does everyone use it for? (Gestures are useless to me as I won't remember them.)
You seriously can't remember for gestures that are the exact same in each Direction the only probably used to ever you can't be that brainless not trying to be rude come on the only problem I have is whenever I pulled the pin out I have to reconnect it every time for gestures to work and it's not like I can return the item

How is that not trying to be rude? Yes, I would not be able to remember what the gestures are or are for. Not that my medical records are any of your business, but I have a diagnosed memory disability since my teen years (got accommodations for it in high school). Since they dropped almost every new device because of the chip shortage, I wouldn't get my hopes too high. I remember 9to5 making a lot of news about the Pixel Fold, only to have other Tech sites 3 weeks later claim that it's a dead product for now.

1) I run google free. The presence of the "assistant" was the part of the google spyware system that finally convinced me that it was time to get rid of it all. You should be very cautious about allowing anyone to spy on you. Read some George Orwell -- what they are ACTUALLY doing now was at that time seen as an unbelievable overstep.
2) I stopped wearing watches when I got my first cell phone. Why do I need to carry two things that do the same thing? The phone is a lot more convenient since it has a much bigger screen.
The whole idea of a "smart watch" is a gimmick. Don't fall into it.
Google might get into the smart watch game to compete with Apple and Samsung. I mean, it is logical. It is a good move to get into that market. I wouldn't be surprised if Apple starts making electric cars.
Oh good...another half baked device.
As long as I can sideload the Google Assistant to my Galaxy Watch 4 Classic I'd be happy

That would be very frightening. They are not good at things that are complicated. If it happens, I'll be trying to come up with some means of detecting them (i.e. 360 degree visual) and alerting me when one is getting close so I can keep well clear of it.

I wish people could figure out that electric cars are not as "environmentally responsible" as they're made out to be. The reason Musk makes them comes down exclusively to the fact that you can't run an internal combustion engine on Mars. Tesla is a hell of an R&D lab for that.
