[Q] Camera module protection - Galaxy Note II Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi,
I've read in gsmarena that the camera has hardened glass, is that true?
I had a Galaxy S I and it was plastic, so it got scratched very easily. I don't like to wear any cases with my phone, but I wonder if, as the camera protrudes, I should take some extra care.
Thanks.

I am using it for 5 weeks now and I think I can say GSMArena is correct. I mean they are correct always but sometimes a review and real life experience differs. But I think they are right here, the first thing which usually scratches on my devices are the camera lens covers, but so far this one is pretty clean, no scratches and I don't care it that much well and I too don't like to put on any 'protective' stuffs.

very good result!
congratulations on this, OnePlus!
I think I prefered the sandstone black, but getting a dBrand skin now so
Love the look and feel of this phone. The build quality is top notch and right up there with the bigger companies handsets. Got the rosewood/Kevlar case for it as well which imo makes the phone feel way better in hand, more grip and slightly thicker sides make it easy to handle I find.
Only had this phone a week and there are sooo many hairline and mega scratches on my screen. I decided that this would be my first no screen protector phone and I really regret it. I baby my phone so much but i guess the GG4 isn't that scratch resistant.
I dropped mine today. Face down onto concrete.
Not a mark on it!! The Black Apricot cover had a few marks on it on the corners but it did its job and because of the wood grain finish it's only noticeable under close examination.
Have ordered a new case though and my old one is on eBay UK. 99p reserve if you want to search for a bargain

I think the quality is very good. It feels like an expensive phone.

Honestly, one of the most underrated features is the ceramic home/fingerprint reader.
My friend's much more expensive S7 has a plastic button that already has scratches on it and feels very cheap vs ceramic.
The build quality of the screen is poor, very poor.
2 days ago my OP3 slipped from my pocket when I was sitting in my car when opening the door. It felt on the asphalt from not more then 60cm / 23,5 inch on its back, and the display was totally cracked over the hole surface. My other phones like Sony Experia ZL, HTC One M8, Samsung S6 Edge have felt very often on the floor and never had any problems. Except for my Galaxy S6 Edge, that felt from the 1st floor, hitting multiple steps to end on the tiled floor . But even then the damage was a lot less then what I experienced on my OP3. It had just some cracks on the side.
The damage I got on the OP3 after such a little hit is inacceptable for Gorilla Glass 4. Or there is an error in the production process that causes the glass not to be as strong as it should be, or it isn't Gorilla Glass 4.
My Samsung S6 Edge has also Gorilla Glass 4 and the kind of damage and cracks are not the same structure as the one on the OP3.
PS. I will try to upload later today an image of the broken OP3 display.

Gorilla Glas is scratch resistant, not unbreakable, I am sorry for you, but you don't understand what GG is standing for...

First of all I didn't say it should be unbreakable.
But this is a copy paste from the site of Corning.
The sick feeling of dropping a phone and breaking the screen is all too common. Which is why Corning's top scientists performed thousands of hours of tests to understand how and why glass breaks when dropped. Then we developed a way to deliver dramatically improved performance against drops on rough surfaces. How dramatic? In*lab tests, Gorilla Glass 4 withstood such drops up to 2X better than competitive glass designs. And our drop tests are the toughest in the industry, conducted on rough surfaces that best approximate the real world of jagged streets, sidewalks and parking lots.*So when your whole life is on your device, help protect it with Gorilla Glass 4.
And my experience and that of my others is that the OP3 screen is to fragile compared with other phones using Gorilla Glass 4 and even 3.
And it is unable to attend what is said on the Corning website.

Hello!
Every my phone I had cared with super love so I had never damage any. But OP3 slipped from my pocket at exact same situation like you have described -when i get in or go get out from my car. And it is crazy to say but it happend to me 4 times with no protection on phone at all :crying::crying:.
Once time it felt even on rocks on display. And I happy to say, that screen is still undamaged just there are few scratches on stock plastic cover and also there is few scratches on sides but very minor. So maybe i was lucky or your screen was faulty..
I just got this phone today. I am really loving the look and feel of this phone. It is quite slim and lightweight, which makes it feel quite delicate but in a good way (not in the fragile sense).
A faulty (batch of) screen(s) could be possible since multiple persons are complaining that there screen has broken to easily.
But in that case OnePlus should do something for its customers. Because now I lost all confidence in the build quality of the display.

If that's really what you're *****ing about, you should take it up with OnePlus or Samsung as Samsung makes almost all AMOLED displays on the market.

Look this is a topic about the build quality of the OP3. If you like it or not, but my experience is that the display is to fragile for Gorilla Glass 4, and I'm not alone to experience this.
It's not my job to take it up with Samsung or even Corning. That's the role of OnePlus.
And yes I will open a support ticket. But we all know this will probably have no impact.
So some or maybe all OP3, have a fragile display.

Look man laugh as much as you want. I had a lot of phones and none were fragile. They even didn't have Gorilla Glass 4. For me the endurance of this screen is ****. And yes I have the right
To write down my experience and my feelings about it. You can call it complaining online. If that makes you happy.
We will see the day your screen breaks after a hit from 1feet high.
I have tested the display of my S6 edge by hitting it multiple time on the corner of the table. I needed 11 attempts to Crack the display that already had some damage on the side. And the force I needed to break it was enormous

Halo Effect on The Camera

Anyone is having this issue?
http://phandroid.com/2016/10/25/google-pixel-camera-lens-defect-flare-glare-halo/
Yup, I'm having this problem.
Although, to be honest, from all the research I've done and now reading that article I feel that this must probably be a design flaw. It is odd though, with Google advertising this is the best camera and all... This is the only phone I've ever owned where this halo effect has been so easy to replicate; heck, I've actually never seen this problem on any of my previous phones (and that's why I got so worried at first)
Google will probably quietly tweak the Pixel's design to fix this in later units (or so I hope) and if that's the case all Pixels (from the Google Store at least) have a year warranty so I'll just RMA it once that happens.
EDIT: Looks like they're fixing it with software
https://www.reddit.com/r/GooglePixe...googler_on_halo_effect_can_be_mitigated_with/
Me as well. Had a google support case open. After jumping through hoops with him I ran into several threads around the web with others having the same issue. Not sure this one can be fixed.
https://www.reddit.com/r/GooglePixe...googler_on_halo_effect_can_be_mitigated_with/
I think this has to do with the placement of the lens. If you look carefully, you can see how there's a small gap between the actual lens and the glass cover. This gap causes light to hit the edges, and since it's glass, it reflects back into the camera lens. If you compare it to the flashlight or other phone cameras, you can see how their lenses usually have their own compartment (or package) that peaks out through the case OR that they're completely aligned with the case.

I love how all the comments are "wow! amazing! really quick response! they're going to release a software fix soon! Apple wouldn't do that! we love you google" and there's a follow up post four months later saying "er...still not fixed yet"!
It's a design fault. They're letting light in because the camera wasn't designed properly. A software fix will only make a little difference. Whenever you read about how good the pixel's camera is (it should be - the phone costs nearly £1000) remember that it has a design fault that can't be fixed.
I am having issue but putting a case on phone solves it no flares now,
I'm using spigen rugged armour case ?

Back glass

In Google's launch day blog post, it stated that both the front display and the back glass are constructed from 2.5D Corning® Gorilla® Glass 4.
There seems to be a large number of people who have received their devices complaining that the back glass scratches surprisingly easily, and a number of reviews (both written and video) cite the same, such as shown in JerryRigEverything's video review at 1:44.
This has me concerned that we're not actually getting Gorilla Glass 4 for the back glass, or if we are, it may be a defective batch. I'll be the first to proclaim my lack of knowledge on the stuff, but shouldn't the actual hardness, i.e. resistance to scratching, be the same regardless of shape, thickness, etc? I could easily understand a difference in brittleness if it is thinner, for example, but these reports have me concerned.
Any thoughts?
well i case my phones right away and have never had any scratches on the back of my phones .... jump to today i too my pixel out of my otterbox defender case to return the case for a slightly thinner case and guess what the back glass has a scratch in it that wasn't there before it went in, i checked the inside of the case and couldnt find anything that would have done that. not a big deal since its going back in a case but im a little ocd so it does bother me a bit that its there
Yeah I had heard the same thing in some reviews.
I can tell you first hand that it does seem to mark easily. I have two fine hairline scratches on the back on min. I assume from keys in my pocket.
I have been using it without a case because I can't seem to find one I like. They all seem too bulky.
My front glass also has a tiny mark on it, from a key I assume. My Note 7 had the same thing within days as well. First time in the last several phones that have gotten scratches in the glass. I either have a really hard and sharp new key or the properties of the glass has changed. I know that impact resistant does not mean scratch resistant. Take a look at the Moto Z force to find that out! For what it is worth I do not think you are alone.
I understand that scratch-resistant ≠ scratch-proof, but for those who prefer to carry a phone naked (I'm talking about the phone!) it would be a pretty big letdown to find out Google didn't provide the product as it advertised it, whether it be failure on part of someone responsible for final production spec letting the marketing group know if there were a change in the glass, an issue of Corning sending the wrong glass, a defective production run, etc.
I suppose my concern is that if there is, as there appears to be, some legitimate issue, they 'fix' it with later production runs and ship the phone with glass to spec going forward, with my only recourse being to deal with it or maybe have them replace it with what would likely be a refurbished phone, either event seriously deteriorating the phone's residual value down the road should I choose to sell it.
Just putting it out there, I have Google Clear cased my phone from new, and I a few small marks now. Assume it's bits caught in the case.

I cringed twice while reading this. I too carry my phone in my left pocket, which is exclusive. I don't even stick my hand into the pocket if my hand is dirty. I also don't wipe off the screen on my shirt. Sand is a killer!
Also on that note higher number Corning Gorilla glass doesn't necessarily mean it's "better" more resistant..

I completely agree with you. I had hoped to carry the phone without a case since it was't as slippery as the all glass Samsung.
I usually keep it in its own pocket but not a particular one, its a product of having your hands full put the keys in the same pocket long enough to walk to the door. I try to keep it separate, but screw it up from time to time. Like with gym shorts, does it go with the magnetic money clip or the keys? Keys don't go with the magnet bc I don't want to kill the battery in my truck remote.. Talk about 1st world problems

I don't think magnets mess with batteries but if that were true the magnet would mess with your phone's battery plus its internal components

Is this the worst built phone of all time?

To my surprise when I tried to remove the back glass that was cracked I punctured the battery. Amazingly there is absolutely no protection below the glass to the battery!
I have never seen a phone designed like that before! Quite shocking really as they almost all have a plastic protective layer or a shell on the battery.
Also, fingerprint sensor is near impossible to install on a new back because of the way it is designed you cannot get enough pressure for it to work.
Just major design issues I’ve never seen on a phone before, both of which Samsung for example has perfected with simple tiny attention to detail designs.... I guess sometimes it is what is under the glass that you pay for...
I actually found it very easy to change. Took about 15 to 20 min in all. Watched a YouTube vid a couple times and then attempted it myself. First time replacing a back and no issues. Used a heat gun to loosen up the adhesive then used small blade and plastic pick to remove cracked backing. Used tip of blade to remove fingerprint scanner and camera glass carefully and reinstalled on new back. Just go a bit slower and be a bit more gentle and probably won't be hitting the battery next time. Phone is a good design and surprising to the LG brand phone I'm used to from when I had an LG G3 which was garbage and one of the worst battery issies I've ever had. Have had this phone about 15 months and it blows my Samsung S7 edge battery life out of the water. I do miss the Samsung camera, Samsung pay option and display vibrance but not the screen burn in that samsung is so well known for. Also, the speaker on the G7 Thin Q is amazing. Just my thoughts and my experience with the phone.

This poor quality build that you say is for Boombox sound. IMO is not poor quality. Is has to do with bass reflex and more.

Removing it was annoying but actually what is really angering me is replacing it. I’ve went through two back covers off EBay and no luck. There’s just no way to apply enough pressure to get the fingerprint sensor to work, it literally requires 3 pounds of pressure to be applied and nothing has that level of stickiness I have found.

MI 9 SE rear camera glass (protected/gorilla)?

hi
as the phone even with the provided case has a outstanding camera 1-2mm, is that glass of the camera lenses some kind of gorilla/scratch resistant?
would be a mess if after some weeks the glass would have scratches as it might be week and photos just get crap?
thx
I am using this: https://www.ebay.com/itm/Camera-Len...s-Protector-Tempered-Glass-Film-/143169703242
I saw on yt is easy scratch original glass. But some stratchs can not mind or affect the photo.
well from what i saw from that jeffrey somewhat it doesnt scratch that easy?
however you think small scratch isnt big enough to get artifacts on taken photos?
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uI4KYzG0yss
he used that diamond tester 2 thing and got same results as people testing seiko and other watches with saphire glas, so should be fine for the backside/camera glass
It is hard to say. Take few different photos and check if are ok.

Careful, what he's saying is that basically, it scratches same as front glass(or gorilla glass). But, that detector does detect some sapphire in it, so technically, they're not lying to say "sapphire glass". Also, that's mi9, not mi9se.
