SD Card Thread - T-Mobile, Samsung Galaxy SIII

As you guys know (or if you don't, you will now) that many manufacturers are releasing phones in which do not have an external SD card and are banging us over by providing really low storage option inside of phones. What got me thinking is that there is a 64GB SD card on sale for 40 bucks at certain retailers and i wanted to buy one and then i came out with the thought that, almost every new phones coming out doesn't have a slot for the SD card. Sure the s3 does but i wont have the s3 forever. What would you guys do?
I know some say, turn to cloud but lets be realistic (at least here in the states). For starters, t mobile doesn't have the best coverage meaning internet is not available everywhere which means if you go visit grandma's farm, you are bored to death and forced to play with cows or ride horses (although riding horses should make you put your phone down lol). Lets say you have glorious verizon with its "great" LTE network and coverage. Well then you are stuck at 2GB or what ever plan you have. point is that you are stuck, so once over the threshold, you are going to get rocked with a fee.
Taking a more personal look, my SD card consists mostly of music (7GB, 800 songs and counting..I like my songs high quality ala 320kbps mp3/aac or 1000kbps Flac), I have 2 nandroids (1 for stock TW JB and the other for AOSP...you know these can make dents on the SD card, apps that require large amounts of data on the SD card.) so right off the bat, i dont need a 64 gb but i know in the future (give or take 2 years, ill HAVe to go that high.)
What are your thoughts? should i just get it anyway? what do you think can be done to get the attention of manufacturers about this issue? any other thoughts?

I'm pretty sure that Samsung has no plans to get rid of the sd card slot.

Wtf? Buy it, and worry about your $40 investment when the time comes.
Sent from my SGH-T999 using xda premium

Yeah just buy it bro. Just know you can only put music videos on the card not apps. My phone storage is almost full because of apps but I have a 64gb card

Being a professional photographer on the side... I will give you this advic - nothing less than a class 10 card, and nothing else besides sandisk or PNY

I've heard enough about how finicky the 64Gb cards can be that I decided to go for 32Gb. 32Gb is only $20. If $20 is still more than you want to spend, 16Gb is like, $10 or less. For $10, does it really matter if you're going to use it forever ? I mean, the phone likely cost many times that and has a limited lifespan of its own.
Just get whatever you're comfortable paying for.

I just bought a SanDisk 32G sd card, but it won't mount. When I try, it said blank sdcard or unsupported files. I tried formatting it but I get the same message. Any help is greatly appreciated.

I am confused why the biggest concern for people when buying these things is simply cost. Sure you can pick up a 32 GB card for 10 bucks... But when it crashes on you a year from now, and the cheap ones typically do, don't come posting a thread here asking why it doesn't mount or why all of your stuff is mysteriously missing from your card. QUALITY people... Not quantity. Its like putting $30 tires on your Ferrari and wondering why it doesn't handle the way it is supposed to. I have had my PNY class 10 card for almost 2 years now with no issues, and yes it was a little more expensive but it is way more reliable than these cheap ass Kingston and no name class 2 or 4 cards that people throw into these things.
Both of the sandisks I have owned have crashed on me. A 16 and 8 GB. Never again will I cheap out on SD cards. Its not worth losing 2 years or a year's worth of data.

I've been buying 32s and compatible 64s every chance I get.
SD slots will be with us for the long haul.

Nexus phones set the standard.
i'm sure more devices will come out without SDCard and removable batteries...
i was actually quite surprised the Galaxy S3 got both good deals, since the Galaxy Nexus had no removable storage..and then HTC came along with their brilliant plan of the One Series...

I totally disagree! I don't think Nexus phones set the standard. I do understand that Google would like to gently nudge us all into using the cloud, but I will go kicking and screaming all the way. I hope they come to their senses and support choice like they should.

Get it.
I think you should get it. You might need it down the road. And even if you don't need it right away, it's still be handy to have. I have a 16GB card now, but I'll get a 32 or higher later on.
And you're right, these lack of SD slots are crazy.

Got the 64GB for Christmas.
If anyone is interested..this is where my sister/brother bought it from...

I think the bigger question is whether we should start training ourselves to use the cloud rather than relying on our sd cards. But I still say the answer is no. Samsung is a big enough player that they can dictate design rather than be dictated to. I don't think they'll abandon these removable parts anytime soon. Maybe in 5 years, Samsung will have their own cloud offering and will force us to use it in lieu of local storage. MAYBE.

I think we really lack the infrastructure to go cloud-only for things like music and movies. The cell towers aren't everywhere - many people can't stream everything even if they want to. People still want to watch movies or listen to music on an airplane without having to pay (or compete for bandwidth if the air carrier is nice enough to let people have at it for free).
I think there are many valid situations when the cloud is simply not an option.

I would buy it. I got a SanDisk 64th class 10 for$39.99 at best buy online a while ago. I am on completely stock with root only and using the apps2external mod by zedomax . Now I have 60gb internal storage and my regular internal storage is now my external storage . Quite convenient...

I got the same card, inserted it, mounts fine, copied a bunch of music to it, works great. However, it doesn't "click" when you press it in, and won't eject! Other than that, works fine. Is there some trick I don't know about? Any advice? I don't want to damage it or my phone in the process of removing it. so far, I've just not worried about it, but at some point I'll want to eject it...

It sounds like an issue with your phone. Do you have the problem with other cards as well? The mechanism to eject its part of the phone hardware and really not related to the card. My card ejects fine. I just have to push it in and it will then be ejected...

[Q] UK Not receiving 32GB version?

I was a little disheartened to read that UK will not be receiving the 32GB version http://blog.clove.co.uk/2011/10/19/...16gb-available-to-pre-order-at-clove-429-vat/
Wasn't sure if I was going to spring for it, but would still have liked the option. What does the UK contingent in here think of this?
BANE
Slightly irritated if that's true. The 32GB model would be my choice especially since again they will decline to let us use sd cards.
To be honest I'd love to know googles official response on this one.
Sent from my Nexus S using XDA App
At first I was a bit annoyed but I've still got 7gb free on my Nexus S and doubt if I will need 32gb anyway. It would have been nice to have the option though (assuming the statement from Clove is acccurate). If I used my phone as my main music player, 16gb just wouldn't be enough. Yes we have cloud services, but these are useless unless you have an unlimited data plan and decent network coverage.
Sent from my Nexus S using XDA App
Yes, an official google response would be good here. At the moment I have a nexus 1. I have a 16gb micro sd and the 512 internal. I'm not even nearly full. I too don't use my phone for music and don't really store much video, however I'm thinking in circumstances where I may WANT to take 1080P video, 32 GB may be a better option.
If there isn't a 32GB uk version I guess we'll have to look for European orders?
BANE
Haven't read the details yet but certainly would have liked to have the option to do the cost vs MB choice.
Saying that I'm still very interested to know when and how much for the base 16 MB version.
Sent from my HTC Desire using XDA App
Clove is quoting £515 sim free for the 16gb version.
Isn't this quite common with Samsung devices for the UK not to get the larger capacity versions? Happened with the original GS & now again with the GS2.
I would expect enough uk demand would change Samsung's or googles mind if its true naturally!
Sent from my Nexus S using XDA App
Interesting. I really have no need for the 32GB version either, but unless it's significantly more, I was planning on going that route as well simply because of 1080p video recording and the way that apps are getting larger and larger. I don't plan on really doing a lot with those kinds of things, but it's nice to have the option.
On my SGS, my internal SD is 1.85GB with 1.37GB available and the SD Card formats to 12.78GB with 3.47GB currently free. It's mostly full of stuff I really, really don't need on there like a couple dozen different CM7 Nightlies, Nandroids and several flashable zips of various Froyo Roms/random stuff. I could easily free it up to 7GB's without touching my music and pics, I just haven't cleaned it out in a long while.
But why no option for the UK? Where is the logic when normally higher capacity models are priced well in excess of the additional cost of the memory? Any other countries being so treated?
Not that I have come across as of yet. I guess as we move into November we'll have more information.
Samsung! Bring the 32GB Galaxy Nexus to the UK!!!
sadly i use a 16gb card to the max in my Desire .....
was really looking forward to the Nexus release but to be honest if im permanently going to be limited to 16gb then it counts me out
Will be looking at other 'coming soon' phones as im up for renewal in December or fall back on a GS2 .....
Don't bother me, though I have complained about the lack of a memory card slot, I never really keep a lot on my phone and tend to offload larger items such as videos in fairly quick order.
I was on the fence on this device, and this kind of decides for me. I'll wait until the first batch of HTC or Motorola Ice Cream Sandwich devices.
Sigh.
I will lie to myself and pretend I didn't want the screen anyway.
This has really blown me away, I can't see the resoning behind this. What a kick in the teeth, 16GB is not nearly enough. The lack of sd-card is a big pet hate of mine but to hear that only the 16GB will be available, that's the end of me getting this phone.
I'll be so upset if a 32gb version doesnt come out! I use my phone alot for music.
My current music folder takes up 10gb. On a 16gb device i'd only have about 2-3gb free left to use.

They're only accepting preorders for the 16GB version though and under the product Q&A it says: "No dates yet on this handset. Please see 16GB version for now."
So not exactly promising
16GB is a deal breaker for me too, it just isn't enough for me without an sdcard slot.

So who's inbox do we flood at google...

Nexus line will never have sd card slots.... "Music" "Picassa" "Docs" even Chrome now, all cloud storage, all Google owned, hence no need for an sd card from Google's perspective. Like another post said... deal with it.... or don't buy. Simple as that.
They are moving away from the sd card...u can still access memory from pc to transfers...they want u to use the cloud...picasa...google music...etc...sorry but don't think google will change that...and honestly...I like that...what makes google cool...want a sd card...RZR.

there's no SD Card for a reason. They are starting to push their cloud services such as google music. Cloud is the future and the Nexus is brand is supposed to be about the future of devices. So either Sh*t or get off the pot.
Doesn't bother me at all TBH.

Alot of negativity...
I also think its pretty crappy with no sdcard slot. Mostly because of the small amount of space but also some of the flexibility.
With the better screen you probebly want better quality on your movies, atleast i do. Sure i cant plow trough all movies on my phone but i dont want to exchange my stuff on the sdcard all the time.
32GB is in my eyes today a very small amount and you fill it very very fast. If it had been maby 128GB i would have been satisfied.
And its such a cheap and simple thing to put in there to. Its not without reason almost all other phones have it. And its almost a dealbreaker for me.
And the cloud... cmon... are all ignorant bigcityboys?... i dont even have 2g cover in my house...
Why are people saying that the nexus line doesn't do SD cards?
I know my Nexus One had one.
That being said, I haven't actually used an SD card for about 3 phones now.
I couldn't care less about the lack of an SD card.

[Q] Who else regrets buying a 16gb Galaxy S3?

I knew I should have gotten it. But wasn't sure at the time if I needed that much space. With stock, it just kinda gets eaten very quickly and cannot move apps to SD card. I regret buying a 16gb model.

Have you ever though about Custom room? works well or everyone and most of the geeky Android users are now on custom rom, it will give you freedom of space, you can install your App anywhere you want but remember that some Apps are bound to install in phone memory, you cannot do anything about that because it's better on phone memory.
Rest, you can install anywhere you want, it's up to you.

Why? Why? Why? Put a case on it now and wrap in bubble wrap for the rest of the week.
I got the 16 and totally forgot how Samsung divies up their storage. 16 - 2gb for RAM - 2gb for data/apps = 12.05gb left. Had I remembered that, I would've definitely bought the 32gb.
So it goes. I have a 32gb card but it supports 64, so no worries atm. I have a 32gb tablet with a 32gb SDcard and a keyboard dock with a 32gb full sized SD. More than enough storage for me.
Doesn't S3 accept USB flash drive through adapter, so you can get up to 80GB of storage.
I forget where I read it but there's an app or setting or something that switches your phones system to using the external sd card for EVERYTHING. So basically for the $30 sd card you just got a 32gb phone.
I don't regret it one bit. Best phone I've owned.

Please just make a nexus with great battery and sd slot

Maybe its just me but the only things I want now in a phone are a huge battery (ala razr maxxx), expandable memory (16GB with no sd slot is a joke in 2012 with so much hd video and mp3s being twice the size they used to be), and some up to date google software. I dont need a quad core phone or more than 2GB of ram or 1080p resolution on anything smaller than a tablet. My galaxy nexus is still plenty powerful enough to do what I need it to now if only it could last all day and let me throw on 20GB of music.
I would love to see a version of the S4 or something that has no touch wiz and gets updates right from google.
We gotta dreamer over here.

Battery technology is the same as its been for almost a decade. All they do is add mah. That's why batteries universally suck.
Sd is the past. It's slower than nand and just adds a fairly useless port to the phone. Hate to break the to you but neither of your requests are happening.

thats not the reason.......
they said it is because it can be confusing to the every day user....where are pictures being saved? where are documents going? and i guess i can see that. i just wish they would let us choose to be "confused" or not.
but FWIW, i am completely content with my 32GB gnex...and would actually be ok with 16gb version as well as i have about 21GB free space. as long as i have unlimited data, i am OK with 16GB on a phone. its a little different on a tablt though, as i like watching videos on them more than i do the phone.
as for the big battery, its coming. just wait. although current phones are starting to be pretty good on battery. the Gnex is pretty bad, but even the S3 almost doubles our battery life.
I've been under the impression a large part of it is the costs of paying MS licensing fees for SD tech.
I've got unlimited data so with the exception if the few times I have no signal, the cloud works just fine for me.

Sure, there are also issues with data being split between internal and external storage, but if you think the Play Store is not a factor at all you are delusional. Why do you think Google only offers the N4 with the rather pathetic storage options of 8 and 16 GB? They should have gone with at least 16/32, but they didn't, and I'm very certain that wasn't just a matter of cost.
Honestly my biggest issue isnt that I dont have storage, but my carrier is giving me less data to use. Something has to give one way or another. Either we need to store things on our phone (movies music tv) or we can stream it. We cant have none the storage and none the data from the carriers the equation simply doesnt work. Personally I would rather stream all my content except most content streaming source's quality isnt good enough. If I want to listen to music from grooveshark I dont want some half assed mp3 rip; I want flac.
Naturally battery life is going to suck, although ive been able to make it bearable with the battery upgrade, a decent rom ( i run Xenon) and franco/lean kernel. Sadly this only makes it bearable though and thats spending how much time and effort right out of the box to make it that? total BS.

+1 SD card
I would just like an SD card so that when I'm flashing ROMs and totally bork my Nexus up, I can recover from the external SD card. The other day during a flash something went wrong and erased my backup images and backup ROM zips. I couldn't connect via ADB to push ROMs or use ODIN recovery. An SD card would've allowed me to recover in a few minutes vs a few hours. This especially makes sense, since a lot of developers use the Nexus devices. It would allow them to recover more easily or boot test ROMs from an external SD card.

Developers and users who know how their device was meant to be recovered dont use Odin. They use fastboot.
People have to realize, for all that the device is, it is a Google device first than it is a Sammy device.
One more thing, if you couldn't use adb while in recovery, you didn't do it right. 100% sure.
To recover a Nexus, there's no need, AT ALL, for a external sdcard.

Battery technology is the same as its been for almost a decade. All they do is add mah. That's why batteries universally suck.
Sd is the past. It's slower than nand and just adds a fairly useless port to the phone. Hate to break the to you but neither of your requests are happening.

I don't understand why people feel the need to carry 20gb of music with them everywhere they go. You obviously won't even listen to anywhere near that amount of music in a day unless you keep it on the whole day, highly doubting that. Not trying to be rude but can someone who keeps that much music on their phone try to show me their point of view?

People are hoarders when it comes to data. That's the short answer.

SD cards... old technology man. Get up to date. Is cloud storage now. And huge data with prepaid how this phone is to be used since it is unlocked. The best carrier with the best deal. Use the cloud top steam your stuff. Only thing that needs to be fixed is Google drive to stream movies. At that, if you root and install flash you can use desktop site and stream your movies.
I would love to have an SD card. The cloud sucks. When u don't have fast internet in the area ur in, when trying to access pictures or videos from the cloud. Forget about it. SD cards are way better then the cloud imo. I can't store all my games data in the cloud. I have like 10 games I bought but I can't install them because they are about 2gbs a piece. Plus I still have some music, HD movies and photos. So if Google isn't going to give us an SD card. Which I know they won't. At least give us an option for a 64gb, 32gb version of the gsm galaxy nexus. I can live with 32 or 64gbs of internal memory. Then I won't need an SD card slot.

Amazon goldbox sale sandisk ultra 64gb today only $46.99!

**FYI SALE IS NOW OVER** Feb 5th
I know this isn't specifically related to our Note 2's but I wanted to give my forum mates a headsup that Amazon is having a huge sale on Sandisk products and now is a great time to pick up one of these cards if you are in the market. I have been looking for over a month and prices have been around $60 to $80.

Saw this earlier. I'm definitely considering it, especially since it was about $56 when I added it to my Wish List last night. Maybe it's a sign?
I hope it'll last a while I have a 32 and about 25 gbs worth of music I have about 12.6 gb of videos and movies between my sd space and the internal this'll definitely keep everything in one place.

That's the plan! I'm OCD and want to keep everything together, but all of my 16gb ext and remaining internal is maxed so that's pretty tough to maneuver.
BTW I think Goldbox sales only last a day
Beware. The Note 2 eats these cards for breakfast.
Source: RMA'd my second one and I'm not alone. Good luck to whoever buys one. Your data will suddenly disappear at any given time.
Just stick to Samsung cards.

I let the phone format it. Not sure but if the phone itself is formatting the wrong way then that's a serious bug. The average person is never going to use a computer to do custom formatting...

Yea you're right I do see a ton of complaints around. But also lots of people had great experiences. I'm just going to keep my fingers crossed I get a good one. Thankfully Amazon is amazing at rmas!

Yeah until they ban you for returning too many items. It happens. I got a call from Amazon last year because I had too many 'reasons' (read: returns) on my account. This was a warning shot.
They backed off when I went through the data with them, showing I had 31 returns vs 460 orders for the past 11 years ($31k in purchases) . I asked if that's considered excessive and they said no.
No retailer would blink at that return rate.
Was a scary call. I use Amazon for everything. :sly:

Thanks king617 just ordered a 64gb micro sd retail packaging
I don't recall my SGH-T889 trying to format the card (if so I'd try to cancel it). The card comes exFAT & should stay that way without having the phone-user interfere right?

Honestly, it might not matter and might just be the luck of the draw. I did see this really interesting post though:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=33768158&postcount=57
Just a heads up of what I recall working for me, i.e. using the default exFAT as is - not having my SGH-T889 format the card.
I've had this card in my SGH-T889 since day1 back in early December without significant issues (I did notice only one .avi movie (<2GB) out of many played & fast forwards fine on internal storage but on this sd card would play but could not fast forward). I have a few files larger than 4GB so when I got this card a few days before receiving my SGH-T889 I immediately checked the file structure to confirm exFAT & transferred those larger than 4GB files with no problem which play & fast forward beautifully on the SGH-T889. If 64 GB internal storage was an option for $100 more I would have opted for it however in addition to 64GB micro sdcard.
So how long until 2TB micro SDXC largest microSDXC cards ?
I just got my today and I cant get my phone to recognize

I should get mine tomorrow but do any of your other computers recognize it?
Our phone will not recognise and AOSP will never do XFat. Formatted mine to Fat32. We will see.

Got mine today, popped it into my phone, and it recognized it instantly. It's formatted as exFAT, and I can copy files to it on the phone with no issues. No formatting required for me.
