Kitchen - EVO 4G Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Is there an online version of the kitchen? I ask because it is the last resort to get a fully functional Rom on my evo before I allow my daughter to have it other than using my nandroid of my original and unrooting.
I use a 64-bit system Windows 7. Done research and it says a 32-bit Java will work but that is false. I have spent from 9am until an hour ago (3:30pm here now) formating my hard-drive and reinstalled my OS because it didn't work. Still the kitchen doesn't find Java although I tried to instal a 32-bit version. Online is the only way I can do anything or I need a step-by-step on what I need to do to an apk where I can do it on my phone or I am in need of someone building a Rom. So.....is there one online?

What are you doing? Making a fully functional ROM? Why not take a stock rooted or a working GB ROM like reloaded?

Yea just get a stock 5.07 rooted rom. Not really sure what you're trying to do

I am letting my daughter have my Evo. She has been hardcore blackBerry but given their status she is wanting to try Android. I have flashed every Rom on the first 10 pages of Development and what she has settled on as far as wanting most is Energy Rom. There are 3 problems stopping her from being totally happy with it. First is the 9016. After a lot of searching all I can find is it is tied to the Phone.apk. I have been unsuccessful at changing it out. The carousel shows only a grey screen when looking in Personalize but have been unsuccessful at getting the one from Mik3D installed and working since I know the one from that Rom works. The browser not going to mobile view and being to wide unless in landscape has been the only thing I have fixed. i used Root Explorer and deleted it and moved a basic stock in. Somehow it worked although the other things haven't. I had decided to try my hand at the kitchen to see if I could make the changes that way but it doesn't work on my PC regardless of what i try and believe me when I say I have taken extreme measures to make it work. So my hopes are that either someone can point me in the right direction on how to exchange an apk using only what tools I can find for my phone or in the direction of a kitchen online. For my phone I have installed: Root Explorer,File Manager and ZipSign2.

She's that picky? Tell her to get an iPhone. LOL

Even she is smart enough to know the first flip phone I ever purchased from Sprint way back when they finally got small enough to fit in your pocket is still better than the best Apple ever released.
However, with a little help I think I can make my life easier. I flashed Derp3D again and only 2 small things needed. First is the keyboard. How do I get the HTC back on and with dictionary? Last is how do I get the weather widget with sound? Those are the only things needed. Themes will be easy enough to handle.

Have you tried MikG v3.11 ? Uber Stable. Has a lot of Themes, and Mods available.

The newest Jellybread has the 9016 number blocked, or you can use Go SMS and blacklist it, plus everything else you mentioned works

The kitchen won't help you for fixing the things you want to fix )besides the fact that there isn't an online version). The kitchen just essentially makes it easier to do the things you're already doing. But EnergyROm is a Sense 3.5 ROM, which is not what the EVO natively comes with. So, there will ALWAYS be issues with it, like the VVM 9016 texts, no 4G, etc. And trying to swap things in from a Sense 3.0 ROM (Mik3D) will only cause more issues. I think you're going to have to "put your foot down" and let your daughter know she can either have a fully functional ROM that doesn't look exactly as she wants, or she can have the eye candy she wants without full functionality.
There are plenty of fully functional ROMs out there with a Sprint base that don't have the 9016 issue. Honestly, those all seem to be extremely minor issues to me. Sounds like you should just bite the bullet and get her an EVO LTE, lol.
I have seen a lot of good reviews of Kendall's ROM, though. But I'm going to assume that's not what your daughter is looking for. Sounds like she likes the look/widgets of Sense.

I remember back in the day I tried a sense 3.0 rom that didn't do the 9016 or whatever, but I don't see how that bugs her. Its just a text message that would only take 2 seconds to delete. When I ran those roms, it wasn't a big deal to me.
With the sense weather part, still didn't have a problem with that either. Just had to turn sound up.

My Review so far on the new with sense 2.1 (4/23 Build)

this is just personal opnion, but this version blows away the 3/31 build. i juss had issues with data not wrkn but i fixed it with the tips in the threads. I hear people talk of stability. well, to me, this new sense version moves way faster and smoother. really. juss make sure to cut off the 3d harware box..it isnt wrkn and will slow things up. i have more features working in this install than the 3/31 build.
my last install didnt load all the folders right and i never saw a keyboard selector or update. checked thru everywhere in device, no luck..but it still worked, i juss couldnt auto update and i was getting hung up trying to change the files. Now, with this new install...everything is perfect..lol i know have "andboot" folder....my last install named it "Android" and no matter how many different ways to change folder name or replace, it didint work. Now all i gotta do is auto update..which i did with this install also..wrks perfect. now my my dual boot wont recognize it...i tried to different versions the 1.05 and 1.06 Gene Y dual boot cabs, no luck..not worried though, i figure it soon enough.
almost half the day been on Sense...i always keep a charger close by. lol for all the skeptical people, wifi does work..i tested it..its pickn up signals...my 03/31 install didnt wrk..as far as wifi goes...im making and recieving phone calls...juss set your calls and txts and emails to vibrate...it works..all my data wrkn perfect...i got opera mini 5 up here along with a ton of stuff i downloaded..lol
A smart move to do is to use your Astro Explorer and press menu to back up data/apps..u can bck up all ur dwnloaded stuff from the market or wherever..and be able to reinstall them if u ever reinstall a new xdandroid version or somethng. ive did install/uninstall numerous times already..so knowing i still have my programs backed up is good. get opera if u havent....its way faster thn the android one. i got programs im dying to use once everything wrks on this build like my morse coder or the virtual walkie talkie apps..i cant say enuff how truly amazed with this forum, its members, and the Feats being accomplished here. and they do this for free...Unbelievable...THANK YOU DEVELOPERS N ALL WHO MADE THIS BUILD POSSIBLE. i cant wait to show this off to my pops and friends back home...ima blow their mind...
Im staying with Sense 2.1........cuz IT MAKES SENSE...lmao
to me this is better than last version and moves faster, at least on my tilt2 it does...oh and if u want true speed readings, get the Speedtest.net app frm da market..its free... if u think im pulling your chain on this build, juss look at da sig..im on android sense now on xda app..wit no problems..im goin crazy ova here on how cool this is...i just joined this site not too long ago n already got my phone on a whole new level of being upgraded..i got all da fixes. 3D DRIVERS...DA LIST Goes on and on..too cool

i think I've confirmed that rooted apps and WiFi tethering works on this build. i downloaded barnacle wifi tethering app from the marketplace that said ur device needed to be rooted in order to work. well it seems to wrk. i know wifi wrks for sure and data, so therotically should. i gave my old tilt to my mom so cant test right this second but the program runs fine and commands say its broadcasting successfull. goodnight..lol

Which installer did you use? The .cab or the .rar?
demandarin- would you say the new build is stable for the majority of Android features? What's your opinion on using it as your default OS system for the Tilt 2?
hey
this is a great version and i think its basically usable for people who arent dying for the GPS, bluetooth, and camera. the one thing that is killing it for me though is the lack of the speaker and headphone jack working. that is the only features preventing me from using it all the time.
i know these guys are making great progress but does anyone have any idea when theyre gonna at least solve that issue? because im sure that would bump up its mass appeal

its pretty stable, to me. it isn't my default OS yet but keeping it on longer and longer everyday. I be pushing da limits on this build. as far as apps and modding Android within itself. essential functions wrk like being able to make/receive calls, txts,data,WiFi...I can even do WiFi tether wit app I found on marketplace. I had marketplace wrkn but I messed around and now its saying serve error but my gsm and data wrk fine...marketplace acts funny at times..lol ill get it wrkn again soon, already deleted data img. I get tired of reading all my settings and apn and downloads..I hve alot..there's some good tool apps on mrktplce

I personally think its SO annoyingly slow. I'm constantly waiting for screens and lists to populate, and it makes me feel like I am using WinMo again. Contacts take forever to load, and the sms app, takes FOREVER to populate. Then when you're trying to do something sense will force close itself, and then you find yourself staring at a black screen with "htc" on it, and you have to wait for it to completely start Sense again. Personally if I want sense UI, ill use WinMo ROM with it, at least everything works that way.
The AOSP 2.1 is WAY smooth, and SO fast, and a more "official" release. 110Mb free ram vs 45Mb sounds WAY better to me.

ok well that is a damning summary coming straight from the horses mouth! Thanks for all the advice everyone, sounds like AOSP 2.1 is the way to go for stability. Can't wait to try this out. I won't have to switch between my G1 and Avantage for much longer.
i downloaded that 2.1 no sense last night after i posted. I installed it juss like any other build but couldnt get it to finish the haret loading. 3/31 2.01and the 4/23 2.1 w/Sense builds i had no problem installing and running. I even checked the folders and it was all correct, in the andboot folder with all the necessary files in it. Even updated the 2.1 AOSP b4 running it the first time. the first time right after haret started up, it got hung up in the beginning..so i rebooted to try again. this time the haret ran the loader all the way till the end and got hung up right b4 the startup screen. said something about trying to init. pid or something. it kept on searching and repeating the command but no luck. i shut it down after i seen it aint gonna load up..lol i really do wanna try this build also but get tired of uninstalling and installing and setting up all my settings again. i have a ton of downloaded apps for the android already. after no success, i just installed the sense one again. Wrks wit no problems..lol
Theres ways to make it run faster within the os itself. I found alot of good memory manager apps and startup auditors. The reason i believe it runs laggy at times is because of all the programs always starting up without u even doing anything. U gotta kill apps all the time. I cant remember the name, but i have this memory app tool that lets u set a minimum and maximum MB for ur programs. For example i set it to 50mb, the program starts killing off apps in order of priority in order to maintain at least 50mb threshhold. works pretty well to me. i might try that 2.1 no sense build again another day but im stickin with the Sense build for now. It has potential..lol

yeah im glad theyre working on it either way, but ill only start using it as my full time OS when they get that feature in at least. but it sure is fun to mess around with in the meantime
yeah, i believe its gonna come soon. I be away from my phone alot and need to hear it when a call comes in or i get txts, or "BACKGROUND Notifications"..lol that made me laugh...thinkin of somethin someone else told me in another thread.. I believe Reefer posted up the new cab for the 2.1 non-sense version. I havent gottn to try it out yet. Im still havin fun with the Sense version. Plus finding out how to cut the Sense UI off is a big plus for me. Now everytime my device boots into Android, It asks me what UI i want to use. Either Home, Sense, or Launcher. if i use home or launcher , it loads right up. Not like when using Sense and its loading forever. I like it cuz i have the option to choose.

How could I replace the Phone/contacts? Give instructions, get $40

[Congrats, the hater made me raise the price from $20, to $40] - Goal is to replace Sense dialer with stock dialer/calllog/contacts from an AOSP 2.1 rom.
I hate SenseUI. Not Really, but the way the dialer/contacts work, is just one of my biggest problems with Sense.
So, when I get this phone, my only reason to root, is if I can replace my default phone/contacts APK.
I haven't used a Sense rom on any phone for over an hour, simply because I can NOT stand the dialer/call log and such.
Any suggestions? Please?
Im familiar with ADB, and will have no problems/regrets/worries about rooting, as I treat my phones like a first born, and dont let them get near harm.
But if there is no real hope for me replacing the Call Log/ Dialer/ Contacts part, with the style from 2.1 N1, I might as well go get my deposit back.
Anyone? First person with step for steps gets $40 donated/paypal'd/ whatever works for you
thanks for not flaming, im sure others will be pleased if this information is made simple-and-clear.

Sorry your best bet is to wait till the cusom roms start coming out, senseUI stuff will go away real fast then. But I agree with you, i'm not a fan of it either.
The problem with Sense UI is the deepness of how it is built into the system. Technically you could push an ASOP .apk of Contacts, but you would more than likely still default back to the Sense version anyway.
Your best bet is waiting on a full ASOP or ASOP-esque build that will remove Sense for the most part. $10 dollars please!
Come on.. there isnt a way I cant also have my contacts/phone dialer/call log as a seperate APK and not over-write the sense stuff? like just have both installed on my phone?
On modaco fourms a while back, in a sense rom they said that was an option, i cant find the original thread for the life of me right now..

I said it.
I still have not found an acceptable solution to this.
Im intending on giving this a full week, before I just return my phone.
I dont mind so much, if it doesnt straight up REPLACE my standard call/contacts/call log, if I can include the stock APK from AOSP 2.1, that runs coexsistant with the current setup, that will be fine.
Someone? Anyone? ill raise the price to $20 if someone can find me an acceptable solution.
Is it not possible for this to just turn into a simple app, like Dialer One basically remade the Sense dialer/contact lists into an app?
every single person that doesnt have htc smart dialer wants it, and you that have it wants to get rid of it, htc dialer > android dialer, sorry but you're truly being a big baby, just return the phone someone will make better use of it.

**** it. $40 on the table.
I already got my evo and don't need your chump change, I had a mytouch3g and a nexus one and always wanted to have the HTC smart dialer and now that I have it , I see a retard trying to get it off his phone, anyway on topic just wait till they root and release an eclair build or a froyo build.

Stop wasting my ****ing time. You obviously dont know what is and isnt possible, and its that whole "oh just wait until its out" type of mentality that doesnt motivate anyone, to make things happen.
Please, jump out of this thread, and **** yourself.
Then do something about it get the phone apk from the nexus one dump and try to push it to the evo be creative you're just a retard trying to get things handed to you I don't see why a dev trying to get froyo on our device would stop doing that so just one guy could get Android dialer on his evo, you're just plain stupid really.

Dude if I had time, I would, otherwise I wouldnt be offering money to people.
Devs that are working on Froyo, im not asking them to do anything different.
but there sure as hell are enough people on here, that have a better understanding of android coding than I currently do, and obviously im not the only person with an interest in this.
Please, im not intending to make this thread a argument between you and me.
Get something to say to me? Then message it, stop cluttering this ****.
I know $40 isnt even an hours worth a work when compared to the price I charge people for IT work, or hardware diagnostics.
If there has to be a higher price to make it happen, ill be paying it, Not you, and everyone else will benefit.
So stop crying about me wanting to put money into the hands of somebody that may need, or want the cash flow.
It's not the giving away money that bothers me its just the fact that you want to dumb down your phone that I cannot comprehend anyway good luck but like they said sense seems pretty deep into the OS so it might not be such an easy task

Here's an UNTESTED thought:
I downloaded another Rom from the Hero forums that should have the AOSP dialer and yanked the phone.apk file from the v2.5.3 download (it should be attached below, there's a newer one up there too if you want to try that instead)
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=663366
The idea is that if you install it and then press the phone button, it should prompt you for which dialer you want to use and if you select "Contacts", it should drop you into the AOSP dialer. You might need the "contact.apk" file as well on further research...but no harm in trying, right? If it fails, just uninstall and it should drop you back to normal.
If it works, I nominate the money goes to toast and/or flipz...because I love toast and flipz's work since my hero days.
HINT: NO SYSTEM RW ROOT AT THIS TIME, meaning until we get that you cant replace any of the system apps.

Worth mentioning, is that I did pull the Contacts.apk, contactsstorage.apk, and Phone.apk, directly off my N1,
and while I tried to install all of them, in the end it doesn't allow it to happen.
this was a common knowledge move to me, as I assumed this wasn't going to work, before mrono and thecodemonk posted it.
I had to leave for the redbull air races before I could post that i tried directly that, to no avail.
but, the lack of System RW root, was the type of explanation i was looking for, as to why it didn't work.
thanks again, when we further this, Ill spread $ to the right directions, if not put some towards the proper Dev's now anyway.
If you root using toasts method and have rw permissions in recovery. Try this while in recovery
adb remount
adb push Phone.apk /system/app
Try a few different phone apks from nexus or cdma hero darchdroid or any other 2.1 AOSP rom.
Sometimes just installing apps wont work. And it should ask you to replace the htcdialer when pressing the phone icon. You dont have to have rw while in android for this to happen. Its something included in all android phones. Just like if you install a launcher from the market, you dont have rw permissions but it will still ask you if you want to switch launchers when you press home. If it doesnt ask then try to go to Setting>applications>manage apps> htcdialer and then see if you can select "clear default"
EDIT: im going to post an aosp phone.apk from an htc rom that that someone put together.
Try this View attachment Phone.apk

[Q] New Sense from Desire HD

May be a stupid question, but is there anyway to extract the new version of sense from the HD Rom and add it to a EVO rom so we can have the new sense and all our other phone features working?

I think having just sense rosie, lock, music, etc is what he was talking about. A flashable zip to update your current Rom, not a camera broken port. I would love the same.
I believe is not possible since they haven't done it yet , but maybe we get an update with the new sense which imo it was supposed to be for froyo since all the features like backup all the apps is a froyo thing and we didn't get it in ours cause they wanted to show this.phone with 2.2 asap, and not another deal beaker like the hero

I think having just sense rosie, lock, music, etc is what he was talking about. A flashable zip to update your current Rom, not a camera broken port. I would love the same.

no thats not what he was asking if you take what he said at face value. he was asking something that he could have had an answer for just by searching or manually looking at pages past page 1

Im glad you know what people are meaning to ask
I would hope, that everything said is taken at face value and people don't try to look for some hidden message
I know about the roms floating around out there, have flashed a couple, but they all have something broken, hence "having all our phone features working." A flashable zip would be the ticket, that way we could update whichever rom we prefer using...
HTC weaves sense into android very deeply so it's easier said then done, but people are still working on it so it could happen. Even so if HTC sticks to their pattern and releases another towards the end of the month they may beat us to it. Either way it's not something you're likely to see in a flashable zip that can update ROMs, it's too drastic of a change.
Difficult :/
I have been working on such a thing for almost two weeks now. It started when I just wanted the new music ui. I tried porting that and then I found that after porting it wouldnt show up in the programs list so i needed to modify some files to get it in there. I got that far only to find that it would crash on opening. Further investigation showed that when you open the app it also loads the matching widget and DLNA stuff. I proceeded to port both of those also to find that the DLNA stuff requires a customized wifi stack. Still havnt fixed that but I also found that all of them rely on the HTC copyright apk which cannot coexist with the one already on the EVO that everything elce uses. Simply put, it would just be easier to port over everything than just parts. Sorry bud

Ditto, similar thing happened with me trying to port the "People Widget". Just to much stuff is tied together. In the meantime I am working on an app for Comcast Voice.

New to Samsung Epic and just have a question or 2

I am coming from WinMo to the Epic. I am noticing a lot of bloatware on this phone and am wondering if rooting it and installing a custom rom the only way to remove these programs? I mean there is a lot of literal crap on this device from Sprint. Any help would be appreciated, I read through all the forums I could think of and even went to the wiki and read.
You can use "one click root",then get a program called "sdx app remover".

SDX app remover will work, but another option is to root, then download titanium backup from the market. I use the free version and it's great. Using this app, you can make backups of you apps and app data (1 at a time, in a batch, or even set overnight schedules). This comes in handy whether flashing roms, if a program gets corrupted, or even if you download an update to a program that doesn't work and want to restore the prior one. Also, if you go to the backup/restore tab, you can see all apps on the phone. If you press on the app, it brings up options, one of which is uninstall. If rooted, you can uninstall anything (just be careful).
Welcome to the epic.
I had the same thought with my heroc long ago. But the stock rom minus bloat still is garbage compared to even the worst custom rom. With this epic was never a question...custom rom 30 mins after I got it.
You can always Odin back to stock...but you never will

I guess I am worried about messing something up, I only started putting custome rom's on My touch Diamond after I knew I was looking for a new phone in the last 3 months. Is there just a bsaic Android 2.2 rom for the Epic, so I could start from scratch with my apps?
I would recommend Bonsai, but they seem to be busy screwing themselves over. Let's just say its a great rom, but they are making some pretty dumb moves in the PR category.
BTW, if there was
literal crap on this device from Sprint

then you should have contacted the health department.
so i am noticing some of these roms will root for me. I am looking at the bonsai thread, is it an all in one package. i am new to android rooting. i know on winmo i had to first unlock then run a ruu from my desktop.
You can use odin too load pre rooted roms. Which will give u cwm. Then u can change roms at your own discretion with out a pc. Look at the ratings and read the posts before u load a rom. Id also suggest bonsai 4.0 seems to the the most stable. And I have tried all of them.
Unless you do not care about pic msging and gps in which case definately check out cm7 aplha 3. Its androi 2.3 gingerbread .
one more question, if i don't like this how do i go back to stock rom, with winmo i just reflash old one.

Thank you for this. My keyboard thanks you for the mountain dew bath.
I have decided I actually like the Samsung ui but I can;t stand how many apps there are, I have 2 freakin Facebook apps because I can't remove the original and the newer one doesn't update the old one. So best thing to do is root and try and remove the stock apps I guess.
I already said this and no one answered. if something goes wrong, how do I go back to stock sprint rom? with winmo i just re run the rom package on my pc.
Just use ODIN. It's always right at the top of the Dev section.
thx, wanted to make sure that is the right thing, like i said i am a nOOb
I was in your shoes a month or so ago.
When I finally had enough time and bravery to mess around with the phone, I rooted and proceeded to brick my phone.
This bricking taught me a valuable lesson and its that the epic is very hard to permantly screw up. I also came from a winmo device before being hogtied and violated from palm and sprints marketin team but wounds healed and feelings of anger and sadness faded away when the epic decended from sprints hallowed halls. (Gg sprint marketing team on another successful campaign...)
Hope isn't lost and I would advise you to become used to your phone with the OTA updates (it should be at ec05) because unless you know what gains you are receiving from flashing a new rom, then it would be a pointless endevor.
Lurk more in the dev forums and play with your phone. If you have a question then ask and hopefully you will find a rom to fit your needs.

I was rushed and wanted to further clarify a little on what I posted above.
The epic you have now OP should be on 2.2.1 EC05 Froyo if it's not that way now. This is the current update pushed from sprint and I personally had no problems with it. The amount of bloat you see vs the bloat you can't (CIQ...and others *too lazy to google or search*) is a factor to consider while deciding if rooting and customs roms are for you.
I know you mentioned Touchwiz and like you, I enjoy it. Rooting and flashing a rom can remove this but many of the current roms offer a version with TW either as default or baked in. This shouldn't be of concern because you will not notice much difference between stock TW and that provided in a rom other than how "snappy" it is.
I also recommended lurking in the dev forums, and I meant that. I'll look at the first page of a thread such as the ACS rom thread in dev. After seeing what's offered, go to the last page and work backwards, noting any issues or problems people are having. Do understand that people are more likely to post a problem than give praise so do not let those post steer you away, but just use caution and take notice of what's recommended to fix it.
Although this may seem long winded, I feel that a majority of people similer to myself will either conclude that rooting is hard and not mess with it, or become lost in the ever changing acronyms, root utilities, and overall direction to successfully root their device.
What makes matters even worse is that some roms can be so complicated to install and troubleshoot that the information you need to continue isn't already clear enough to you to correctly ask a question or troublesoot. You will see this reflected in post where phones are reurned to the store after it fail to boot.
So to restate what I think would be your best option (and others who find themselves looking to root and flash custom roms), you should lurk and study the dev forums along with general. Make sure current version of froyo is on your device from the OTA update (EC05 is current and you can check by Settings/About Phone/ and scrolling down towards the bottom. Become knowledgeable about what your phone can do, then if you decide that a new rom will make for a richer experience, then follow guides handed down from the roms themselves to help make sure you successfully root and flash your phone.
It can be a headache but it's worth the pain when you finally finish.

jonny4,
I,too, was in your shoes. I registered on this forum just to reply to your post.
I've had my Epic 4G for a little over a month and I've already tried several different kernels and ROMs. I've found that a good resource for learning how to flash your Epic is YouTube. There's a guy on there with the username "randyshear." He had an Epic 4G and made a ton of how-to vids about installing ClockworkMod Recovery, making Nandroid backups, and flashing various ROMs. Before my Epic 4G, I had never had an Android phone, so I was VERY new to the whole thing. Fortunately for us, the phone has been out for a while and many options exist. I recommend checking out randyshear's vids. He posts download links to all the ROMs he tries out. I've been using the Genocide 0.3a kernel that undervolts and overclocks the CPU to 1.2 GHz and I've flashed ViperROM Apocalypse 4.0.4 with EXT4. The phone has never been faster!
Make sure you get ClockworkMod on the phone and make a backup. Also, just to be safe, back up your microSD too. Trust me, once you get the hang of it, it's actually really fun to try out different ROMs to see how your phone responds. Good luck!
EDIT: I recently flashed my Epic with SyndicateROM Frozen 1.1.0 (EC05 Froyo) with the Twilight Zone kernel and I was completely blown away! FASTEST ROM/KERNEL COMBO I have seen yet!
here is basically what i hate. i just killed a bunch of apps and 3, Clock, amazon mp3, and qik video, that I have never used or setup are already running again. It is absolutely stupid that a program that has never been used or setup can run itself, reminds of me of spyware or malware, and because Samsung locks out removing of said apps it is annoying. I would be happy with the basic rom if all these extra apps weren't running or installed. I may try what the first person suggested. I know WinMo had a bunch of crap apps installed in the Sprint rom but at least those did not run on their own. I do appreciate everyones help, really and I guess if I plan on rooting I should probably do it within my return policy.

Returning to The Epic! Can I get some direction?

Hello all. I will be returning to a newish epic soon...hella missed this phone. I've got tons of old files from a couple years ago but I assume there has been lots of goodness put together since my epic got trashed. I've read lots of forums, dowloaded some files, yadaya but If there is still anyone out there using or developing for the epic, can you please give me some direction. Best way to root, from what I assume will be a stock phone. (still odin v3+1.85?) Also and more to the point of my question, Roms? Best roms that actually have valid download links? Thank you for your time if anyone actually reads this

I don't know how much advice I can give about what is "best", but I can tell you what I am still using on my "daily driver"...?
I try to keep up with the CM11 "Nightlies", and so right now I'm using the latest: cm-11-20150614-NIGHTLY-epicmtd.zip
The kernel (?) I'm using: notest-epicmtd-kk4-20140401-cma.zip
I make use of Link2SD app as far as juggling space for apps.
Somewhere along the way, the stock Android Messaging app just stopped working correctly for me (couldn't compose a new message - just greyed out - never could figure out what was wrong), so I've "Frozen" the stock Messaging app and installed the (almost identical) SoftCoil Messaging app.
The stock Android browser did not seem to perform very well for me, so I went looking for a "lighter footprint" browser - right now I am trying out the "UC Mini" browser, and so far so good (?) although I still don't rely on using the browser that much, so maybe I haven't done solid testing of it...
I'm not a super-whiz at this, but if there's anything I can answer to help, I'll try. Maybe you'll have some ideas or find out some things that are more up-to-date than what I'm doing...?
Glad to see I'm not the only one posting in this "Ghost Town" these days...
(Although to be honest, I did just get the letter from Sprint about the discontinuation of the WiMax network... so the months are ticking away as for how long I will stick with this, too... soon as I buy a new phone for my lady, I will probably inherit her Nexus 4 and finally say goodbye to the beloved Epic 4G...)
Thank you very much for taking the time to share that info with me. I just got my new Epic about 20 min ago and can't wait to get some CM goodness going. I really didn't expect a reply to this at all so thank you again. I'll post again if I come across something worth sharing.
Oh also give puffin browser a try, I use it on my Tab 2 and its pretty damn fast!

Howdie!
I see you are one of the last people in this forum actively doing things. If I have an old Epic lying around that I want to use as a gaming only system--doesn't need any phone support, which is the most stable rom for that feature? I'm not looking to strip a carrier radio out or anything, just don't care if works or not, I plan to disable everything but wifi.
Suggestions--if you don't mind?
TIA
